If there's one thing you should take away from my review, it's to try the Perilla leaf Soba!!! It is soo good and coming from someone who 'used to' dislike anything perilla. Their soba's are so refreshing and their tonkatsu is perfectly tender yet crispy on the outside. Their sparkling ade's are also a must try! My favorite is the lime & jeju green citrus:) The store's interior is amazing. They use an ipad system to take orders and call over your server. They accept cash and card payments though! The world food tour duo reconvened at Tonkatsu Kuro in Kaka'ako. Our last meeting was in Las Vegas (BTS & Carlos Santana). I read about Tonkatsu Kuro and heard good things from friends. Alas, they now have a liquor license (no more BYOB) and offer a limited selection of beers and mixed drinks. The space is decorated in shades of grey and black. We were seated at the far right of the counter in the middle of the room. There are tables for four lining the Mauka (left) side and Diamond Head) end of the room and more tables, placed parallel to the counter on the Makai side of the room. I had two quibbles about the room. From our seats, we viewed diners seated across from us. It would have been nicer to have a privacy panel 12 to 18 inches high, perhaps made of translucent glass, to split the counter. The space is all hard surfaces, sans any acoustic treatment so it was vibrant (AKA noisy). We started with the Kuro Highball ($9, made with Jameson) and the Toki Highball ($11, made with Toki whiskey). The latter was almost colorless, while the Kuro had the lemony yellow color in a highball. Both tasted almost the same to our untrained (for whiskey) palates. They came in large, glass beer steins. All of the beers came in large and tall glasses. The drink prices are very reasonable. We were presented with a printed menu, but you ordered via a pad in front of your seat. In addition to the highballs, we ordered Loin Katsu ($32), Tender Loin Katsu ($32), Lemon Soba ($21) and Bibim Soba ($21). The food arrived quickly ... The Katsu dishes came on a tray containing a plate holding the katsu, shredded cabbage, a lemon slice and a dollop of mustard, a bowl of rice, and two small dishes holding Asazuke (pickled vegetables). A suribachi (grinding bowl) filled with sesame seeds and a wooden pestle was set to one side. We were told to grind the seeds to flavor the tonkatsu sauce. The Tender Loin Katsu came in three pieces, two cut in half. The Loin Katsu was a large, thick piece of Kurobuta pork, sliced into six pieces. Both were breaded to perfection and came tender, succulent and juicy. We both put the Yuzu Ponzu dressing atop our shredded cabbage and treated it like a salad. The Lemon Soba came in a ceramic bowl with a piquant lemon shiru with four slices of lemon, chopped green onion and seaweed. The soba was topped with grated daikon and sesame seeds. The Bibim Soba came in a metal bowl ... The soba was topped with gochujang sauce, julienned daikon and cucumbers with sesame seeds. Mounds of chopped green onion and seaweed were at the bottom of the bowl. I finished the Bibim Soba ... It reminded me of cold soba in a broth of kimchi sauce. I really liked the dish, the noodles were firm as soba should be, and the flavorings spicy, but not overbearing. The shiru for the Lemon Soba was delicious ... I'd want to try that dish on a future visit. With tax and tip, the bill came to $158.33. We walked out with a container holding half of the tonkatsus, a bowl holding the noodles from the Lemon Soba, and a container to hold the lemon shiru. We needed dessert so we stopped at Holey Grail on the way back to our car (parked in Whole Foods). A story for a separate review. read more

Delicious meal! Their shrimp is always my favorite - crispy flakes, crunchy and juicy meat inside. I might like that better than their pork actually. Soba is solid with a good chewy texture. The soup was also flavorful. If you like a more citrus refreshing flavor then it would be the lemon soba, otherwise the Kuro soba is my go-to for a savory and sweet broth. There's a TON of new restaurants in the Ward area. Thank you to Yelp for assisting my friends and I in finding a dinner restaurant. NOTES 1. Ample parking available in the various parking garages in the Ward area. We all chose to park in the garage associated with Whole Foods (this is my preferred garage since the number of parking stall availability is displayed by the entrance). 2. Reservation made via Open Table. Surprisingly, I received a text 15 minutes before our 5:30pm res that our table was ready (which, for me, doesn't really happen). I was grateful, but we all walked in closer to our res time since some of the group were still on their way. 3. The restaurant is not large, IMHO. There are tables against the walls for large parties/groups, and there is an "island" in the middle for single diners and couples. We dined on a recent Saturday, and the seating was nearly full, with the largest group being a family of eight. 4. There was a tablet stationed at the table where diners can place their orders for meals, drinks, and sides. Also, we couldn't find an option/function to pay via the tablet, so we just asked our server to check out. 5. Out visit was in the 2nd half of May 2026. I was with a group of 4, and upon check-in with the hostess we were seated immediately. It took us nearly a minute to come to that "ah-hah!" moment about the tablet....and to access/navigate its ordering functions. Well, as you can probably guess, we all ordered some variation of tonkatsu. I ordered a tonkatsu set/meal, and a pair chose to share a tonkatsu set and the lemon soba, while the 1 in our group chose a half soba half tonkatsu set. Sauces are on the side also. We all enjoyed the food immensely! I finished my entire portion, while others finished what they could and took home their leftovers. The tonkatsu was prepared well and the portions were decent, while one of the girls commented that the soba was "so much". SERVICE We thought the servers were friendly and attentive. Special commendation to the older gentlemen that assisted us mostly throughout our meal with water refills, cleaning plates, and providing take-home containers. side Note My only critique is that none of that staff directed us to place orders via the tablet. We eventually figured things out, but since this was a first visit to the restaurant for all in our group, an "fyi" about ordering would have been appreciated. It is my personal experience when dining out (in general), that most servers ask diners if this is their "first time dining with us", which didn't happen during this dining adventure. This place has been on my radar for a little while now. We had tried to grab a bite here a month ago and made the mistake of trying to walk in without a reservation. With movie tickets in hand, we had to pass on the 1.5 hour standby wait, but used it as a learning experience. This time, my friend made reservations in advance for an early seating. Parking was easy above Whole Foods, and a short walk away. We were seated immediately and given a short instruction on how ordering worked and what was offered. Using the tablet to order was easy and intuitive, and the robots were interesting to watch. Everything looked really tempting but I settled on the Loin Katsu, and so did my friends. My girlfriend ordered the Lemon Soba and Half Katsu. We also ordered Shrimp Katsu because it looked too good to pass on. The food came out quickly. My tonkatsu was crazy crispy on the outside, tender, and flavorful. I, and my friends really enjoyed it. My girlfriend really enjoyed her lemon soba and katsu as well. The shrimp katsu was also amazing, and a surprisingly dense and filling bite. I wasn't expecting that and had to roll out of there because I was so full. I went to the website to make reservations but clicking on the link never went anywhere so I searched and found an open table link where I could see availability. Every 15 minutes was available so no problem getting the time we wanted. That being said when we got there, the place was almost full so it seems like most people do not make reservations. The staff was initially very welcoming to let us know to order on the wall mounted tablet and utensils are in a drawer so under the table. We tried the loin and tenderloin katsu to see the difference. The sets came with miso soup, a small portion of pickled vegetables, bowl of rice, and shredded cabbage. The loin had a little more flavor but despite it being more fatty, it was a little tougher than the tenderloin. We preferred the tenderloin which was softer though a little lighter in flavor. The panko breading stayed on the meat which was good, but I wish it had a little more body to the crust. I would like a little more crunch for the outside. The side dishes were ok, nothing special about them. I forgot to mention the kitchen loads the food on robotic carts that come to your table, but a server then puts it on your table. The restaurant is not that big but I guess that is more efficient so the servers do not have to keep going back to the kitchen for food. We flagged down a server to get more cabbage during our meal and learned that you can use the tablet for refills so keep that in mind as a tip. This may not be the very best tonkatsu in town but it is a very good choice and easier to get reservations than other places. 200g Loin with a sides of shrimp katsu and curry was ordered. Katsu was exceptionally prepared, crunchy, flaky and surely looked the part. The cut of pork was substantial, very tender and delicious with katsu sauce or curry. The shrimp was also scrumptious with the tartar sauce or curry. A refreshing toki highball was the perfect pairing for this fried feast. Service was good as you use a table side tablet to order or to request staff if you need anything. The decor and vibe is modern and casual. On the Friday nite that we dined I saw robo-servers bringing food to tables, staff hustling and diners having a good time. I forgot to take pictures since I was there with family. The food was alright. I didn't feel their tonkatsu or soba really stood out compared to other places for the approximately $30 price point of the combos. The combos had one tenpura, a slice of thicker katsu, and the soba. However the shrimp tenpura and house made tatar sauce were very good, and I'd recommend the tenpura set there as the shrimp was flavorful, the breading crunchy, and the sauce very good. The robots are there to look fancy, and are only meant to be touched by the servers, unlike in japan where the robots take the place of serving staff. It is a small location, and can be on the louder side, and the placement of the order touchscreen means one person in your group needs to be the one punching everything in. The software can be loud after the order is completed too. It is good to try and you may like the combo more than me, but I find there are better deals at that price point for noodles, and some slightly more expensive katsu places that feel much more filling. read more

Great spot! Made a reservation for a party of 6 and check in was easy. It was my first time trying this spot so I was curious to see what the hype was about. I believe this is a korean or korean japanese fusion restaurant as noodles are korean style. They bring you the sesame seeds to grind at your table while you place your order on the tablet. Once you order, a "robot" comes with the food and servers help to place on your table - seems pretty efficient and it was a unique experience. I ordered the perilla noodles and half katsu set which comes with 1 pc tenderloin and 1 pc shrimp. Some others on the table ordered katsu sets like the tenderloin or all shrimp. The portions were decent and although a bit pricey ($31 for a set), the portion sizes are generous and cabbage, miso soup and rice have refills. I really enjoyed the perilla soba - the noodles were bouncy and the right amount of chewiness with a light and refreshing sauce. I've never tried perilla noodles before so I liked that it was something different. The katsu was also cooked well and paired nicely with the soba. The vibe of the restaurant is slightly casual so we felt like we could relax and eat leisurely. Although during busy times it seems like they have a strict time limit for tables. New place I tried yesterday while out in the area. Love that the restaurant was clean and organized with a heavy Japanese influence. I actually felt I was in Japan. Came here on a Friday with a 4:45pm reservation and by 5pm the restaurant was full! Nice spacious interior and a tablet ordering system. I don't usually like cold noodles but it turned out to be my favourite part of the meal. Sesame seed flavored and not too saucy, it was delicious and refreshing. The katsu breading was crispy and light but the pork wasn't as juicy as what I would have liked. My friend got the spicy tsuyu soba a the server said it wasn't too spicy but she said it was, hehe. The lime sparkling ade was good and my eonnies enjoyed their $5 happy hour draft beers. The katsu set comes with rice, miso and cabbage which is refillable throughout your meal. They also have tonkatsu sauce, sesame sauce and a yuzu ponzu sauce on the table to use as you please. All sets came with a 'truffle' sauce which was nice and garlicky. The vibes here are great! I find it easier and convenient to order on a tablet so I am glad they offer it here. The menu isn't as wide as other tonkatsu places but the sets they do offer, they make it gooood. The shrimp katsu was super crispy and the shrimp inside was juicy! I am incredibly disappointed with my return visit. Waiting 15 minutes on a busy night was completely understandable. Unfortunately, everything after that was a train wreck. I immediately stopped eating and asked for my meal to be remade. Their solution? A 50% discount. They remade the katsu but somehow still forgot my salad and miso soup. At that point, I paid my bill and left. The biggest joke was the manager. Not once did they come to my table to apologize, explain, or take accountability for a food safety issue. Apparently, the management strategy is to hide and hope the server takes the heat. If this is what qualifies as management, I'd hate to see what incompetence looks like. I booked it..... went back in and spoke to hostess again and was told they are still no longer seating. She told me reservation made for after 8:30- they call customers to come in earlier. After I left -- Hostess called (8:33) within a few minutes--- I didn't answer because I figured-- what's the point of answering... hostess told me they are not seating after 8:30. Hostess called a 2nd time (8:46) the reservation I booked was 8:45.... I told her I was just there and she told me they are no longer seating..., she then told me ""walk ins ""are not available after 8:30 but reservations are accepted until 8:45.... They specialize in tonkatsu and soba. We ordered a tonkatsu/soba set, a tenderloin katsu, and a loin katsu. All set meals come with unlimited shredded cabbage, rice AND miso soup. This makes the value of the meal a lot better as most other tonkatsu restaurants only offer free cabbage. The loin katsu and shrimp katsu were huge & so bomb! Definitely recommend getting either of those two. A robot brings the food to your table which is very cool & a server simply assists with any refills on cabbage, rice, soup & beverages. All ordering is done thru touch screens at each table. They do offer desserts, but we were so stuffed that we didn't have any room. However we will most definitely be back again soon! Excellent!! My favorite tonkatsu place right now. It's a little small so I would suggest making reservations but we have walked in as well and gotten seated. Everyone we have come across here is very nice, including the hostesses and servers. We can order on the pad at the table and then a little robot brings the food when it's ready. The servers bring the food from the robot to the table though. So cute! The food is really excellent. The tonkatsu is soooo crispy and delicious. After hearing more positive reviews since we tried this place during their soft opening, decided to give it another try. I tried multiple times during our previous visits to the island to make a decent reso that wasn't late at night. Couldn't make a same night reso so I made one for the following night. After a hike at Makapu'u we were starved and made it just in time. Despite the rain, they were packed with customers at 6 pm. Immediately knew what I wanted. Combo set with soba noodles and katsu. I inhaled the soba noodles as I was hungry. Loved the dashi taste to the chilled broth. Still feel like the soba noodles should be more slurpable like in Japan. 4/5 Note: There were these knats flying around our table the entire time we were trying to enjoy our meals. Somehow it was attracted to the drinks almost diving into my soup and eventually doing so when I was finished. That was a bit annoying. When I delved into the hot food, I was pretty satisfied. The texture and crunch of the panko was so light and flaky. Batter was nicely seasoned. I really enjoyed the tartar sauce. It was creamy and delish, and not like the overly relish ones you have at American restaurants. The pork was tender and also nicely buttered and fried. I remember the 1st time I came it was a bit oily but it seems like they figured this out. The refilled our cabbage salad which was nicely shredded and appetizing. Fresh and delicious food. Located in Kaka'ako on the lower corner of Robinson, tucked back by Dean and Deluca, below Onkee. This is a nice spot. They have spacious seating and state of the art ordering and delivery, with a robot bringing the food. Of course humans are there to grab the items and hand everything to you, clear your dishes, etc. The service was nice. Tucked inside of the table were all utensils and napkins. The drawer was in the way of my legs, however...as that isn't something typically located within a dining table. Crossing legs and bumping, knocking, scratching knees, ouch. The drink options can be found online before arriving and this is what you will find onsite as well. They had four beer selections, two highball options, sodas and water. I googled what a highball was and since they serve coke, and a highball is made with whiskey, I asked about having this as an option, but unfortunately no. I was told they do not have a full bar. Hmm, it was ok. I ordered a Kirin draft. All of the katsu items were very well prepared! Perfect. The sauce options were great. I crushed my sesame seeds in preparation and had great dipping for the two person combo, which was priced well. I needed to use the restroom which was not very clean so I was careful. read more

Was able to reserve dinner with friends for a Saturday night. Was seated right away, you order your food on the iPad and food comes out in a timely manner. The food came out and tasted delicious, my husband and I shared the couples meal and was able to try the different pork and shrimp, it's similar to ginza and tonkatsu tamafuji, definitely light battered. We enjoyed it, there is more tables inside, one whole table that people share which I thought was weird. read more
