I came back here after two years for a dinner and had a much different experience. My table was sat toward there back room, and the entire service was unfortunately a bit of a letdown. The waiter did not do a good job of coming to our table to check in on us, drink orders, and refilling our waters. This time I tired some of the lamb chop which was cooked well and tasted amazing for an appetizer. For the main entree this time, I had a special which was a halibut with a linguini pasta. The fish was cooked pretty good and so was the pasta (al dente) however the sauce that it was served in was quite bland. Definitely a letdown with the sauce which made me not finish the pasta. If they nailed the sauce with something savory and complimentary to the fish, this would've kept the high praise review. Overall, this experience was unfortunately a letdown with the food and staff/service, probably a bit of an unfortunate choice in meal and poor waiter for my table. Our friend Bob told us about this restaurant, which gets packed on weekends and at peak times. We all got together for dinner early on a weeknight (around 5:30p) and we had no trouble finding a table. The host and our server were were cordial, nice and friendly. We got some nice warm breads to start the meal and some free green salads that came with our dinners. The Chicken Ornella, the Chicken Piccata, the Bolognese and my wild Salmon were all very well made. Fresh tasting, homemade pastas and well prepared. For dessert we all shared a delicious Bread Pudding....YUMM.... This is a great place for a meal in New London, check it out. Free parking in the back of the restaurant. Great Italian restaurant. We started with oil and a ball of chopped up olives. Good for putting in on the bread. Had seafood minestrone soup. It was loaded with seafood. The meal came with a salad. Recommended by the Garde Arts Center (right across the street). Props to them. Had dinner reservations for 5:45, and was told free parking in their lot. We arrived early (and yes, the lot had ample parking, as advertised). The vibe was cool, noisy, but not so much that shouting to hear your partner was necessary. Italian songs permeated. Valerie was our server, and provided menus. My friend ordered the Chicken Ornella (breast in a lemon & white wine marinade, sauteed w spinach over linguine). She absolutely raved about it. I ordered Chicken Marsala, which came w a side of fettuccine Alfredo. Kind of an unusual combo, per my NYC food critic friend, Zagbolt, an amazing chef himself. "You don't usually see two different sauces in an entree." I will say, however, that the FA was perfect, and the CM was even slightly superior to what I had in Hopewell Jctn NY only a few days prior. I have no words to say how great Tony D's is but I'm gonna try anyway! We ended up going for our first visit on a very busy night. So we ended up seating at the bar. We met Pete one of the best bartenders/waiters/all-around nice person. He fired off the specials like an artist and his service was fantastic... We started off with the mozzarella and tomato special. It has to be one of the best appetizers we've ever had the tomatoes were incredibly soft and so flavorful mozzarella is homemade and magical Had the veal marsala with a side of fettuccine Alfredo that was honestly one of the best Italian meals I've ever had. The marsala was perfect and the fettuccine on its own was wonderful but when it helped me clean up the rest of them Marsala sauce I saw a stars. My wife had a Bolognese and she loved it. The food was fresh and delicious. Every dish was full of flavor, even the salad! I didn't particularly like the calamari. It was great but it was served with balsamic which I wasn't sure about but did not like much. The calamari is also served with no tentacles. I personally love the tentacles but some might like that they don't serve it. I went on a Thursday afternoon. It was nice and quiet. The place is spacious with a bunch of tables, a few booths and a bar seating area. Do not order takeout from Tony D restaurant. They hardly ever get thing right on the order You come home and the things you asked to check they say yes. They also a lot of times wrap things and cellophane and put it in the upside down. It leaks and causes a mess. I usually y take out at least once a week,but not anymore. Calling gets you no where . Four of us dropped in on Tuesday night. Restaurant was not busy it was early. Started with a great Margarita and finally could taste the tequila. Two of us had the lobster ravioli which comes with side salad excellent. The others had pasta bolonase and zuppa de pesce. They were both gf and very good. I just recently relocated to this area for work and have had a hard time finding a good Italian place for me. A patient last night at work recommended Tony Ds. I said I never heard of it and he said it was his favorite Italian restaurant. I decided to last minute grab some things to go but first check out how the place looked. I was greeted by my server and took a seat at the bar. The atmosphere was so refreshing yet dim, very God father vibes. The house salad dressing, was so good. I have an extra in my fridge calling my name right now. From there on out, the cream of mushroom soup special sent my tastebuds on a wonderful journey. I wish I got more to bring home. The Chicken Ornella was so moist and full of lemon and garlic served over linguini. The pasta cooked just right. The meatball melted in my mouth. The food is always excellent and the service is top notch. The ambiance can be great in the main dining room and the bar, however, if it's busy and you don't have a reservation they may squeeze you into the banquet room or a table near an aisle, which is serviceable, but far less intimate. No matter, once you get settled the drinks, food and friendly service makes up for all of that. You can spend a lot of money at any Mystic or Casino restaurant and not come close to what you get here and when the check arrives it won't give you agita like it could in those places. read more

My friend and I didn't know we needed to make a reservation, and we got super lucky. The host allowed us to have a table for 2 for an hour and a half. However, I totally recommend making a reservation ahead of time before enter the restaurant. It is very nice dark, mellow vibe in the restaurant. My friend and I felt like we were the youngest people there. It is more a place for an older crowd, and a perfect place to take people on date. Lollipop Lamb Chops: Very nicely cooked and tender, and the pickled veggie and arugula went along really well. White Truffle Fettucine: Best pasta I've ever had. It is a little greasy and heavy, which is why it comes with the House Salad. However, I was disappointed in the House Salad because it was just a bowl of lettuce with some dressing on it. Lemon Ginger Creme Brulee: VERY GINGER-Y! I'm a big fan of ginger, but this was way too much for a dessert, especially for the filling. There wasn't a hard sugar coating on top, which is a little bit disappointing. There is parking space behind the restaurant. During prime dinner time however, there's no parking spot, so I recommend coming earlier to find parking. My friend and I got really lucky finding one spot that was left at 7pm. This place is amazing. We've been multiple times previously, and the food as well as the drinks are always superb. We just came in on a Saturday evening at 6 without reservations. The owners were able to seat us quickly for 2 adults and 2 children. We had a show to be at by 7. We let our amazing waitress know. We received our salads right away. Our entrées came out quickly within less than 15 minutes. We were in and out within 30 minutes. They have some street parking in front of the restaurant and a large parking lot in the back. They offer a variety of delicious dishes but their specials are delicious and worth it to try. I also recommend to try their desserts. read more

My wife and I were looking for some good seafood and decided to drop in last night since it was near our hotel. We were not disappointed! It looked busy but we were seated right away. The raw oysters and clams were tasty. We also had the clam bisque which was divine with a slightly sweet flavor and plenty bits of clam. The Zuppa de Pesce we ordered with the red sauce. The bread That homemade, what appears to be focaccia bread, is phenomenal!! The rosemary baked on top give a crunch to the softness of the bread and a nice rosemary flavor. I appreciated that the bread was lightly salted with sea salt crystals, enough to tantalize your palate without being overpowering. Generous amount of olive oil was drizzled on top and the red onion slivers give it a nice pop of color. Hands down the bread was incredible. Braised Shank The mashed potatoes were creamy and definitely made from scratch. I liked that there were pieces of the potato skin left in the mix, giving the potatoes two textures...creaminess and slight crunch here and there. The sauce on the shank was a good tomato based sauce. I enjoyed that the flavors all melded well. I was a little surprised that the shank meat was tough in some bites. Therefore they lost one star for that. Pasta The make their pasta fresh and in house daily. They sell the pasta to go, with their sauces too. I love made from scratch foods, I am excited to try the lobster ravioli that I picked up from the shop later on. I would definitely recommend them, so try them out. On Friday night October 10th. Five of us ladies went for dinner .we arrived at 5:00 our reservation time . We were seated right away. We ordered by 5:15 or so . It was 5:55 when I asked if we were going to get our salads the waiter said he was waiting for the one person having soup as she was not getting a salad . We should have gotten them when she got her soup. We were going to a show at the Garde theater for 7:00. Then we were told it would be a few more minutes to get our meal. It was now 6:20 when our food arrived. One of the dinners eggplant Parmesan was cold she sent it back they brought it back it was still cold , my meal was veal Marsala was watery tasteless,one other was tasteless also. The manager came over and apologized to us. He did comp the eggplant dinner. All in all we were very disappointed. We have been there before food and service was excellent. Completely unexpected culinary gem, hiding in plain sight in New London, CT!! Though it doesn't look like much from the outside, and the decor is a bit campy on the inside, this place has some of the best food anywhere... and I do mean anywhere. I previously lived in Manhattan for 8 years, Boston for 15 and have travelled all over the states, and most of the world. Food- SUPER hit or miss in my opinion. The hit: the white truffle pasta was the best pasta I've ever had. It was so tasty and the noodles were so fresh. The lamb lollipops were perfectly cooked and full of flavor. The free bread is also full of flavor and super delicious. It was difficult to not fill up on. The miss: the house salad (comes w every entree) was just lettuce and (I think Caesar) dressing. It didn't have any added veggies or fruits or nuts or garnishes. I usually expect more from a house salad. The lemon ginger creme brûlée was all wrong for me. The normally hard caramelized sugar layer on top was actually a paper thin soft layer. The creme underneath was just a really really gingery pudding. Overall, that dessert was not creme brûlée and it was not very tasty. Service- Excellent service. The wait staff was very kind and accommodating. The wait for food was a little long but they were PACKED so I'm sure they were just very very busy. Ambiance- Be sure to make a reservation. This place is a classy old school restaurant with low lighting so don't expect the usual foodie pics full of natural lighting. They have a coat room! There's parking in the back but they're usually packed so get there early. There is lots of room inside and no outside seating and they can accommodate large parties. Very romantic ambiance inside as we saw many old couples there on dates. I will say we were by FAR the youngest people in there. Most/all people dining here are aged 60-80. Overall, I'd come back for the pasta or appetizers. The service and ambiance were on point but the food was half great half not so great. read more
