The only thing I miss from the year I spent living in Sacramento (California) are the produce stands that dot the highways. I never thought moving back to Seattle would include having access to them again, but thanks to Top Banana that is the case! Within walking distance from my house I love this little stand, with its great selection of fresh produce, some refrigerated items, honey, etc. It's a mini-farmers market and corner store in one. Staff is amazingly friendly and goes out of their way to be helpful. In fact, yesterday I pulled in to check out a funny noise my car was making and they immediately sprang into action. One of the staff helped change my tire, lickety-split. And, of course, their fruit and veggies selection is great. Produce is very fresh and there is a good mix of organic and non-organic and plenty of local items. There's a sign at the register, which I appreciated, much as it embarrassed me. No cell calls, no faxing - you know. I had received two calls while I was there, but at least I'd had the courtesy to say I'd call them back. Otherwise, I might have plopped my basket down surreptitiously and slipped out the other door... But - I finally went! Believe me, I had no idea it was as nice and as well-priced as it is. I could do some finger-pointing and say, "Nobody ever told me! But yeah, yeah, yeah - I could have looked on Yelp before today. You're right! I less-than-three this place, easily one of my favorite greengrocers in the area! Their produce is always fresh and inviting, with samples available throughout the stacks. They have a cold case with interesting items like asadero cheese, excellent for tlayudas or nachos! If there's someone before me at the register, I always end up impulse buying stuff like the Goya products or fresh baguettes... maybe a honey stick or four. But usually end up spending around $20.00 for a sack of beautiful produce that is quickly consumed. read more

This place - perfecto! I can buy produce for a bbq for 15 people and spend less than $30. Corn, avocados, onions, peppers, pineapple, jalapeños, mushrooms, etc. Buy some meat, cheese and bread elsewhere and you're all set. read more

i bought my tree here 2 years in a row now. very nice guys to help you find what you are looking for. i even told them how much i was willing to spend and they found me a very nice tree that fit my price. and it is not one of the small thin branch tress it is the thick nice one. i recommend that everyone buys there tree's here. read more

Top Banana is a great place to buy fruits and vegetable when they are on sale. Venture outside of their sale items and prices get a little high but their goods are high quality and fresh. Last time I went they only accepted cash and debit cards so be prepared when you go. There is always a spot on the parking lot too, which is a plus! read more

I'm bummed - really bummed by Top Banana. I bought my Christmas tree here in December and LOVED it which is why I'm doing 3 stars - my tree had been cut at a local farm the day I bought it. It was beautiful, and the guys who helped us bag it and put in on the car were super helpful and nice. My complaints about this place relate to the produce. Maybe I had the wrong idea about this place - but I thought it would be a local produce market filled with local, seasonal produce.... not the case at all. I went in last week and it was hard to find stuff not from california, mexico or south america (I'm pretty sure most of the apples, pears and potatoes are from washington). So yeah the prices are good, but I can get this produce anywhere - what I want is to feel like I'm part of a community, and I want locally grown, seasonal foods! read more

The Alligator Pear or Avocado; nubby green skin wrapped around this pear shaped tropical fruit with a buttery flesh of which I am addicted. I love that it's fatty AND good for you. Here, at my neighborhood fruit & veggies purveyor I can get em at a super price. I love the idea the local non-chain market. Right in the Ballard residential area - totally walkable for all! Quality and affordable produce often a bit cheaper that the local Safeway even! Aside from your typical apples, bananas, cherries, lettuce etc... they also have ginger, yummy fruit snacks and homemade jams and dressing. Top banana really is on TOP for produce markets! Even though a large grocery store is more convenient, I prefer to head to TB. Their prices are the best around for quality produce and they allow me to bring my dog in while I shop -- awesome! The staff is very helpful and friendly, always ready to help pick out the best produce. I always come home with a heavy bag and money still in my wallet. One thing to note, they have a $10 minimum on credit card purchases, so its smart to bring cash if your list isn't too big. read more

Super friendly people- great, fresh produce. Incredible prices. Lots of times they have piles of fresh herbs (like basil) for waaaaay less than grocery stores. I've been coming here for many months to feed our juicing habit at home. Their stuff is pretty good and usually priced very reasonable. Sometimes they bring out samples of things. That's very nice. They still use old-school receipts, so your purchases are not itemized. Keep your eyes on their keypad, so they don't accidentally make a mistake. This happened to me and the error was fixed quickly. Just sayin'. I hope they upgrade soon. With high gasoline prices, it is good to be able to go to one place for produce. read more

Ok, good stuff first: it's really affordable, and usually pretty well stocked. I'd say it's on par with our usual grocery store's selection, and better than any other local grocery place. Good stuff. The bad: location. For us, anyway: we have two grocery places right by our house, so walking or driving up to Top Banana is a bit of a hassle. But primarily: $10 minimum purchase to pay with a card is a big FU in the face when prices are so low that for two people, you can't buy veg for less than half a week, some of which will undoubtedly go bad in the process. It's not "$10 or we'll charge you .50", it's "$10 or you can't use a card." So I am not going back until they change policy. read more

Great spot for all your fresh produce needs. Super friendly staff and very neighborhoodie appeal. Last time I was in I got a great deal on artichokes, like a third the price of Safeway. Huge selection of stone fruits as well. I've been making some really killer smoothies with what I've been able to find here. Definitely reminds me of being back in Cali, we have these sorts of places all over the place.... If it has any drawbacks at all it would be parking, which is usually never an issue, and that you have to spend 10 dollars in order to use a credit card, which is a weird concept, though not a big deal except that everything here is so cheap it is a little difficult for one person to spend 10 bucks. I moved to Seattle recently and this is one of the gems I've been trying to find. For the prices (the best) and convenience (easy parking) it's great. Small shop with friendly folks and a small variety of artisan non-produce goods. Not all of the food is organic or locally sourced, but hey you can't beat it for the affordability. However if don't want to catch COVID-19 during this pandemic and Governor's "Stay Home, Stay Safe" order with practicing social distancing if out for essential errands (such as pharmacy and grocery store). I thought it might me safer to pickup some produce from here rather than the grocery store. Wrong! The staff were wearing cloth face masks, but vast majority of the staff and customers didn't care about social distancing. Guess they don't care if they catch COVID-19 or following the Governor's orders. The State of Washington should just shutdown this business for not following the Governor's orders. I'm considering reporting this business to the State for enforcement actions. Too bad this produce shop lost my business. read more

I heard about this place and decided to stop in when I had a few extra minutes to kill. I'm a produce fanatic so I was up for buying anything. The employee suggested some apples and was kind enough to cut me slices of 4 different types of apples. He even offered me the rest of one as I was leaving. I bought some delicious Empire apples (never heard of them before but they are incredible) for $.69 a pound! I bought some cheap bartlett pears as well. The prices were amazing considering it's the middle of November. I work nearby here so I am definitely going to become a frequent customer. I'd recommend for anyone to go here to get great produce at great prices. read more

Love having a produce place nearby! It's SUPER cheap and the quality is still great. One time I didn't have cash and the cashier spotted me the $6 that my bag of produce was and just said to bring extra next time. That was great and yes, I paid him back. Today I spent $8 at Top Banana. I got: three onions, five Fuji apples, a cucumber, and a loaf of Tall Grass baguette. Awesome! In addition to all kinds of inexpensive and frequently Washington-grown produce, they have chips, bread, tortillas, milk, sour cream, yogurt, some cheese, pistachios, flower baskets, tomato starts, honey, Mexican Coke, and a lot of other stuff. Cool place, good produce, but a little pricey for what I was expecting. That said, they have a great selection of fruits and veggies and some other items. Top Banana is an excellent little neighborhood fruit stand. Don't let its "side of the freeway" locale on 15th Ave NW scare you off. They have a terrific seasonal selection and staff and the prices beat the pants off of all the nearby grocery chains. I seem to remember that they have a credit card minimum (which is tough to meet, being that the prices are so low) so I recommend bringing cash. read more
