Updating my review. I moved from the area and was excited to come back to this nail salon after a first experience. After yesterday, I will never return and I recommend that you don't either. I requested an ombré dip manicure and showed the nail technician a picture of what I wanted. Once she started to do the ombré, I realized that she was not experienced in doing this design. I've gotten it multiple times and it's no reason that each hand should take 45 minutes. And the ombré itself does not blend correctly (see pics below). On top of taking three hours (including removal of dip prior to manicure), the nail technician made my cuticles bleed on three of my nails. I don't like to leave bad reviews so I tried to contact the owner for some type of resolution, but I received no response. Very disappointed in this level of service. read more

I've been coming to Top Coat since they opened this location back in 2018. I was working at the Merchandise Mart and needed to get my nails done, and I found them on Yelp. I first met the staff and owners when I was a student at UIC, they had a nail salon in the area called Maxwell Nail Spa at that time, and one day I realized the service wasn't the same anymore when they weren't there. When I say it's truly the best service I can ask for from a nail salon, I really mean it because they actually take their time on your service, and at each station they set a timer for however long the service is actually supposed to be. It doesn't matter if people are walking in or whatever, I've never felt rushed, and I feel like I'm truly getting my monies worth for the quality and pampering. I highly recommend Top Coat Nail Spa to anyone who is looking for a quality manicure and pedicure. All of the nail technicians here are licensed and skilled at their craft. read more

Randomly found this place, called at 3pm and got an appointment for 5pm, and Julie did an INCREDIBLE job with my nails! She patiently soaked my last set of dip with tips/extensions off and was SO careful to preserve my natural nail and file gently (and didn't just yank the old nails off like some salons!), which was great because I have suuuper weak and brittle natural nails. I wanted transparent dip with a sparkle, so she layered a sheer dip with a sparkle dip as the last coat and I absolutely LOVE how it turned out. She was also so diligent and careful with the shape / filing. This was probably one of the best dip manicures I've ever gotten! Will definitely be back! read more

This place is amazing! Clean amenities, great massage chairs + foot spas, and the service couldn't be better. All the other places I looked at in the loop had not so great reviews so I decided to walk to River North and the people working at Top Coat really made it worth the walk. I got a pedicure (regular polish) and full set (gel not acrylic) for 73 total. Cindy and Helen were both amazing and I thought this was a birthday treat to myself but I'm going to have to try and make this a semi-regular thing. It was such a great experience I can't wait to go back. Also, they let you pay with venmo or cashapp which is nice when you don't want to reach into your purse with wet nails. read more

My friend had to file her nails and I had to cut more cuticles when we got home. Disrespectful boss - I went to the location to express my complaints and the workers said I had to the call the boss, the boss didnt even let me finish any of my sentences, attacked us by trying to blame us and didnt even provide a gift card reimbursement or make-up of services. I've tried out several nail places in the area over the last year and once I discovered Top Coat, I've been a loyal customer! I've been very pleased with my dip manicures and pedicures each time I've gotten them, and feel that they don't "cheap" out on materials like other salons do. They keep their salon very clean and have SO many color options to choose from! I would also say they are reasonably priced for the location and also allow you to pay over Venmo. One thing to take into consideration is that due to being such a great salon, it can get VERY busy during peak times. I try to avoid waiting long by either making an appt or calling ahead to anticipate wait times. All in all, I highly recommend checking out top coat! Just be strategic on what time you go if you aren't willing to wait. read more

I wanted a soft almond shape for my nails, and she shaped them perfectly. The polish color selection is expansive, and the salon accepts Venmo and the Cash app. I felt that those were definitely nice touches that set Top Coat apart from other salons. Booked an appointment here for a friend and I. We showed up 15 minutes early and we could tell they were scrambling and running behind on appointments. We were not sat to commence the appointment until 6 PM (30 mins after appt. time). Various other customers were also confused and literally asked us if we booked an appointment too as they hadn't been approached by anyone either. We were also super thirsty and couldn't get anyone's attention to ask for water as they were clearly in a rush and not paying attention to any of the waiting customers. When we finally did get sat, we were worked on by various people at the same time. The first tech who worked on my nails was wiping his eyes and nose with his hands, then touching mine. He then buffed my finger, and completely cut into my skin. It was extremely painful and started gushing blood, probably scraping through 3 layers of skin. He said sorry, and I had to ask for a towel to apply pressure on it as it continued to bleed and cause pain through the rest of the appointment. One day later, it hurts a ton still and I'm continuing to apply ointment as I'm afraid of infection. No managers apologized or asked if there was a way to make this right. For these prices (which aren't listed on their site..) I somewhat hoped for some money back given the lateness and the rushed job that resulted in injury. If not that, at least acknowledgment from management. Truly disappointing as I've been looking for a nail salon in my new neighborhood but I don't feel great about the service, skill, and sanitation here. read more

After damaging my dip nails badly after an ice-skating accident (lol), I came here to get my nails soaked and filled off. I came in at lunchtime on a Thursday and was tended to immediately. Chole was my technician and I am so happy I had her! Since one of my nails was badly damaged and very sensitive, she made sure to be very gentle and not irritate my already swollen nail bed. I prefer how this salon removes dip - by soaking fingers in acetone vs applying balls with acetone and tin foil. The soaking made the dip come off within 5 minutes so the wait time was reduced. After soaking, she gently buffed off the remaining polish and even treated my nails with a protective topcoat. Total time took about 25 minutes and cost $11 (+$4 tip) which is very reasonable versus what I've seen at other salons. I would definitely return here in the future to get a manicure.
