I liked John. We got along famously, being into vintage HiFi for over 45 years and having a deep appreciation for all things analog. Music and stereo topics was always good fun and he had an uncanny wealth of its history, performances, recording studios, rare pressings, international record labels, obscure artists, famous venues and concerts. He was so kind as to help me sell some stereo gear and trade the revenue for LPs. His store was immaculately kept, welcoming and the quality of merch was top notch. So... my daughter Rachel and I would see John every once in a while. We moved out of the lake worth area about five years ago and still tried to stop and see John when he was in. We always talk about John and how much we loved seeing him and talking with him. Rachel made him a very special photo she designed of Jimi Hendrix and John hung it in the shop. Johns eyes always shined when Rachel walked in to see him, and they would talk and talk about music. John had some of the most interesting stories about the music scene all around Florida that he would tell us. He used to tell us about his days in the Navy in Mayport and about his father and the VW he brought. We tried to see him over the past two years, but the shop was always closed. So, so sorry to hear that he passed. He was a treasure and a real special and nice person. read more

Very sad news the owner of top five records john. Last time I was there it was the fall of 2023. I found out from the people that own the sandwich shop a few doors down. The record store was open on and off and then in January, they found out that john the owner of top five Records passed away . January 20 25. This is very sad as his wife was a very nice lady and he was a friendly knowledgeable person regarding Records. He had such a wonderful collection of records . There were lots of records you couldn't find anywhere else. Not sure what will happen with his collection. I guess his family is in charge of all That, but the store has been cleaned out. read more

If you're an audiophile, and someone that seeks the very best vinyl quality and variety, don't miss out on this record store. But if your looking to be "coddled and pampered" as you shop, this is not the store for you. The owner may not the most personable person but his love for music is strong and it shows. He takes great pride in selling only the best vinyl and the selection spans across all genres. You can feel the love he has for music from the way he wraps, categorizes, rates and re-sleeves his records. A lot of work has gone into putting that store together, and it shows. I just got back from my second visit to the store and picked up 4 great records. I plan on going back to this store many more times! And for those people giving bad reviews based on their "customer service" experience, get over yourselves, have some humanity, and remember that you don't know anything about a person, until you walk a mile in his shoes. Wow. The owner of this shop is one of the nastiest people I've ever interacted with. I walked in the shop holding a coffee and the owner immediately screamed at me that food or drink wasn't allowed. "No problem", I said and promptly went outside and threw my coffee in the garbage. When I walked back to the shop, he had locked the door! And through the mail hole yelled "I'm done!". The owner is a racist, don't go here. Gave this place another shot after 5 years. I went in an hour+ before closing. As soon as I walked in, he yelled at me saying "get out!! We're closed!!' and some other expletives but I was so startled my immediate reaction was to leave instead of hear the rest. Note that there were at least 3 other (white, older patrons there). I stood outside in disbelief and started texting my friend outside. Two (older white) people walked inside as I was texting and I was expecting the same reaction but they did not get the boot. I had forgotten that there where was a sweet, little vinyl shop in Downtown Lake Worth in between Propaganda and Common Grounds. I had passed by here so many times in the past, but wasn't sure if they were open or not. Thankfully, I saw people go in recently, and decided to do the same -- being that I needed to get someone a gift. The small retail store has a nice vinyl selection containing both new pressings and second-hand records in a variety of different genres. I did notice more than a few jazz and soul records amongst the bins I searched. I ended up grabbing a copy of Iron Maiden's "The Number of the Beast" for my friend, being that we're both fans of the music. Additionally, the pricing was reasonable. You notice if you go to enough vinyl and record stores that some price their inventory quite high -- especially for vinyl LPs. But Top Five is pretty good. Most of the less expensive LPs run between $10-20, but they're in good condition. There are some good pressing here that I hadn't seen elsewhere. Plus it's close to my house, which is a plus. They are cash only, so before your eyes go wide on all the records, make sure you have some, as they don't accept credit cards. read more

A one-star review from me is as rare as a 5 star one, but I've never felt so compelled to review a business negatively as I do this one. No need to get into the specifics of my interaction with the proprietor of this shop. The other reviewers have done that enough. It's evident to me that the man being described has some serious social issues. I went in twice and noticed that if the customer was elderly (over 50 I'd guess), white and not dressed in anything flashy, the man went out of his way to help and talk their ear off about his obsession. If however, the customer, was female, of a race other than Caucasian, young or in any way different from his perceived "norm", the man was as rude as can be. I don't know if Florida or the town of Lake Worth has any fair business practices that they enforce, but if you are hoping to attract paying customers to your downtown area, this business must be shuttered. Let him sell online where he doesn't have to exhibit his racism, ageism and general hatred for the world. read more

I never give small business a bad review but this time i have to. It was my first time at this store since i just purchased a record player and i wanted to buy local instead of going on amazon or something of the sort,so i went there after work and i walk in with headphones on,which means that i'm clearly listening to something and can't hear if someone talks to me. But i noticed the man behind the counter gesturing,so i take them off and ask if he said something.He mumbled something,i couldn't understand it,then he asks what i thought he said,and that's when i mention that with the headphones (which are not discrete,it's the kind that goes over your head so EVERYONE can see them) i can't really listen to what people are saying.He asks why i would wear them if that's the case,i say that it's peaceful,he doesn't say a word to me after this point. So i start browsing like any other normal person and after maybe 10 minutes of looking (he still hadn't said a word,so i figured he wouldn't say anything else and it would be alright for me to put them back on) i put my headphones back on and keep looking. Then i hear a noise behind me,turn around,he's clapping "at" me,i take my headphones off and he just points at the door,yells "out" and i was very obviously confused.So i ask what's going on,he tells me i'm "trouble" and yells out again.That went on for 30 seconds before he went to bother the one other person at the store to tell him that i'm trouble,i came in with headphones on,asked him what he called me (which i did not ask) and the poor guy is just standing there confused saying that he was just browsing and not paying attention. He continues to call me trouble,saying i'm weird (if it matters,i was wearing doc martens,jeans,a black tank top and a black jacket with a bege tote bag and i have dyed grey hair) and tells me to leave his store immediately.I asked for an actual explanation as to what was going on one more time before leaving and calling him an as*hole,which i'm not proud of,but after being called trouble and weird for no reason,i feel like it was justified. I have never in my life had any problems like this with ANYONE at all and based on the other reviews,i'm not the only one that was mistreated by this guy.Don't waste your money on a business that will do this to costumers for no reason. read more

John taught a lot of young kids, like myself, how to look at and handle vinyl. The first time I was yelled at was when I was 15 and I understood why afterwards, I had never been to a record store before and I was just leaving bins unfixed. I was a teenage tornado and John was a wax veteran. Much love to this shop, I wouldn't be playing music and listening to as many different artists now in my 20s without this store front and the man behind it. The owner is a POS!!!! My husband and I are new to the area and were so excited to check out this record spot as we have a huge collection. As soon as we entered my husband and I said hello to the owner and another woman behind the counter, no response back!! So incredibly rude to us for no reason. As we were walking around, I noticed the owner giving me horribly, nasty, dirty looks. I just kept to myself and continued to browse the store. We were probably in there for a total of 20 min and couldn't find anything that stood out to us (the selection suckssssss for the amount of albums they have). We then proceeded to make our way towards the door but I stopped because I had to sneeze (I of course covered my mouth) and he yells at me GERMS!!!! Told me to get out of his store this man is crazy!!! So now we can't sneeze in public????? Is this guy joking??? After reading the other reviews it makes sense, it's not only me. Out of all of my years collecting and going to record stores, this is the rudest owner I have ever come across. I was visiting my relatives in the Lake Worth area from NY and my cousin took me to this store. He told me a story of how the owner gave him a copy of Supertramp's "Breakfast In America" after he told the owner this sentimental story about the album and his daughter. So after hearing the story I thought the owner must've been a really great guy to gift my cousin that album. I walk in and put on my mask, my cousin doesn't have one so the owner says that he needs a mask on, without having a mask on himself. It is just The owner, my cousin, and I in the store. My cousin politely asks if the owner has spare masks for customers (usually business have a box of masks if they require them) and the owner says no. My cousin says "ok" then walks out the door to see if any shops down the street have any masks. No big deal. My cousin comes back in with a bandanna for a face covering on and then comes over to me to see what i'm flipping through. All of a sudden the owner tells my cousin to not give him any crap about the mask stuff (again the owner is still not wearing a mask). My cousin says to him that he isn't at all. Finally the owner puts on his cloth mask and tells my cousin "well that bandanna isn't really a mask." My cousin asks him politely what is the difference. Then the owner just straight up told him to get out, then asks if I am with my cousin. At this moment I have an album in my hand that I have been looking for for a while now and I didn't wanna get kicked out and not buy it. I bought the album but I am never going back again. My cousin sat outside baffled that this was the same guy that gifted him that supertramp album pretty recently. I originally thought the owner must've been having a bad day or has just been constantly harassed by anti-maskers, but judging by pre-pandemic reviews on here it just seems like he has a sour personality and thinks he's better than everyone. My cousin can be confrontational when he wants to, but in this situation he was being as polite as possible and wasn't trying to give the owner a hard time at all. Based on the reviews here I went on being a little afraid of getting yelled at. I was not only not yelled at, but had a great conversation with the gentleman who was working! I only bought one record, but I spied half a dozen more that I will be going back for! My experiences at this shop are equally or even more bizarre and arbitrary as those mentioned below. The owner is not only not friendly, but doesn't greeat anyone, even after the person has been there many times, had conversations with him[almost forced], and made purchases. Rather, he just glares with a hard, angry look making the customer feel very unwanted and uncomfortable. The owner likes to act like he knows music in general, but only knows select records of select genres. This is evident in the sections he places many records and his prices[arbitrary, sometimes $25 for a record with a value of $2 and sometimes $10 for a $50 record], and the fact that unknown 90's Punk bands that put out one LP of zero value have placecards. Furthermore, the place isn't always open within the hours posted (makes things difficult for anyone traveling from 30-45 minutes away such as myself). I wouldn't go back to this place if he was giving away records...there would probably be a catch from such a shyster. read more

Went to this record shop on the recommendation of another local record shop owner's word. Top 5 is really great. Nice clean setup and everything is organized really well with price, pressing and condition info on nearly every single LP. That kind of work takes time and warrants a little bit more in price in my opinion. Even though his prices here aren't actually as bad as I've seen. Especially in Florida. I've been to record stores in Broward, Palm Beach, Orlando, Tampa and up in places like St. Augustine and Melbourne too. These prices are definitely not as bad as I've seen in some spots across the state. Orlando being the highest, in case you're wondering. They have a great selection of used LPs and some new ones. Most of the cheaper items range from $10-20 and are in near mint condition. If you're looking for $2-3 records this place probably isn't for you. If you're more serious about good condition and high end/rarer records, then you'll enjoy and appreciate this place. For more serious collectors, condition and specific or original pressings are usually key and this place has all of that. Take a look behind the counter for the really good stuff. In my first visit here I was able to score a first pressing of a Jimi Hendrix record, in the shrink, that I had been looking for. And for a way lesser price than I had expected. Bottomline: go here and expect records in great shape and bring cash! read more

There are only a handful of places to buy vinyl in the West Palm Beach area. Top Five is the best. John is the owner and is very helpful and kind. He takes in only top quality vinyl. So you know what you're buying is super clean and will sound fantastic. Lake Worth has a fun downtown strip for shopping and Top Five Records should not be missed. read more

Serious record collector shop run by an extremely knowledgeable no-nonsense record collector. He only takes cash. No credit cards! His speciality is psychedelic rock from the late 60s and early 70s, though there's a decent selection of other genres as well. Everything extremely well-organized, clearly marked and well-presented. Shop is spotlessly clean (though during my mist recent visit, another customer spilled a cup of coffee on me while I was looking at the LPs and I was treated as though I was the one who made the mess). Mostly 'vintage' LPs with a smattering of new releases and contemporary reissues. Prices are fair to slightly high. Not outrageous, though & jazz or soul fans may well find some bargains. Only complaints: the shop is not well-lit & the guy who runs the place is not very friendly, even towards other serious collectors such as myself. Even so, I've returned to this place several times over the years & never left empty-handed. read more

Most uninviting business I have ever been to. Walked in, no greeting. Started thumbing through albums with my wife and all the sudden the owner yells at us for not setting the records down gently enough after looking at them. I certainly had no intention of harming the records in any way so if I unknowingly set them down too hard I'm sorry, but this guy almost came unglued! We apologized and after a few minutes I looked back at the counter where he was standing and he was staring at me. I looked over several more times and he was still giving us the death stare, and so we decided to leave. Regardless of any other aspect of the store I will never step foot in here again. This is my first Yelp ever I normally don't care brush off bad service usually just it is what it is no reason to complain BUT THIS GUY...Off rip walk in.. an abrasive "what are you looking for?"From owner or manager. I say "Nothing just looking."And that alone got a death stare for. Wasn't even there for a total of 5 minutes. I started looking then He says "we probably don't have what your looking for" First off, how do you know what I'm looking for? Because I'm younger and by young I mean 30 he thinks I'm looking for Taylor swift or something.I was looking for records for my parents for there 35th anniversary. Anyway he was rushing me kept saying you should go around the corner they have records there. So that's twice he made me feel like I should leave so I asked him if I should leave because that was the vibe I was getting from him not knowing that the rudeness would escalate . He YELLS at me "IM TIRED OF CLEANING UP AFTER YOU!" I just said wow and walked out. I don't care who you are owner or not. You just don't treat people like that in general let alone when they are coming into your place of business to buy what your selling. JUST VERY RUDE. John has little time for people who don't know their stuff or how to handle records when they are shopping. If you're a novice, this place might not be for you. John is a phenomenal guy who has become a very good friend of mine, but his patience can run out quickly if you're clueless and annoying. Took my daughter and her friends there to purchase some albums as she loves vinyl, but the owner was condescending and rude when he basically reprimanded us for looking at the merchandise. Our biggest offense was not putting the albums back in the exact spot they came from, in one little section. If he had told us politely and professionally it would have been fine. Will not return. I had heard a lot about this place but had never been. Now I know why. The owner is your stereotypical pretentious "know it all" record store owner. His shop is dimly lit. His prices are astronomical ($15 for Yellow Brick Road, $30 Houses of the Holy, $40 The Wall, $20 In the Dark, etc). The owner doesn't have time to talk to you, or, he doesn't want to talk to you unless you can rattle off knowledge about some obscure pressing of a band no one cares about. Furthermore, the name of the store is a rip off of the super pretentious movie "High Fidelity." This guy can't even come up with his own name. Bottom line, don't waste your time here. There is a new record store in Boynton Beach and there is always The Record Rack in Pompano. read more

This was one of the strangest experiences I've had at a record store in quite some time . I'm an avid vintage jazz collector. While visiting family in southern Florida, I decided to stop in this local shop to gauge what record stores had to offer in this area. I approached the owner and asked if he had any original jazz records. He responded by telling me to be more specific. I then told him time periods, labels and artists I was interested in. He then pulled out two special lp cases he had under the front desk and warned me they were filled with Lp's that were 500-1000 dollars. I told him that was fine because I know what these records are worth. He then asked me what titles I was looking for. I don't come to stores with specific titles I'm looking for, but he pulled out the first two Lp's in the case. He wouldn't let me touch them. That's fine. They were rare and the quality looked great. I asked if I could see what else was in the case and he said no. He told me he would only let his regulars who've come every other day for nine years have first dibs. The cases had dust all over them and he confirmed he had had these a while. So the regulars comment made absolutely no sense. He was hesitant on answering a direct question whether or not they were actually for sale in the first place. I was really confused at this point. He told me to come back with a list. Yeah, no. I don't have time for mind games like that. Record dealer tactics like this are ridiculous and shouldn't be tolerated. Carefully curated selection but limited selection. I wish there was a bit more turnover but All lps are labeled as to their attributes (1st pressing, rare, etc) .expect to pay 10$ plus for most used lps . The lps are in excellent condition , cleaned and meticulously packaged. Very litle in way of new releases but their are a few here and there.tThis is more of a shop for n informed collector , make sure to check things out using discogs to see if it is worth price. There is a lot in there to look at so one can assume it would take a while to find something you would want if its your first time in. Owner kicked us out after 5 minutes for the reason "im not going to clean up after you". I dont understand this because we did not set anything down or disorganize any of the records.
