We've been the Top Hog several times as we live out in Jonesville and this is one of the prime lunch spots for us. I have to say we were worried that it wasn't going to survive early on, especially since it opened right before Covid, but our little barbecue place has been thriving and has even opened up a second location. The barbecue here is quite good. I routinely get the brisket lunch or the brisket French dip. My wife alternates between the turkey, pulled pork, and today's new favorite, the buffalo chicken wings. Everything is good, bordering on excellent. One of the biggest surprises to me is the sides, as Top Hog has the best coleslaw in all of Gainesville. And this is odd since I can't stand kale, and this coleslaw is rife with it. Regardless, it's one of the tastiest , sweet coleslaw all around and actually is one of my favorites. The green beans are also good, as well as the baked beans. My wife really likes the collards. One of the things holding this back from being a five star recommendation is the price. This place is not cheap. You do get pretty generous portions, and I'm always full when I leave but it's a little too expensive for an every day lunch. We typically save this for game day weekends. Anyway, if you're craving some barbecue but don't want Sonny's, this is a great alternative, and is some really good local barbecue. We've been to the Archer Road location and have had really good experiences. The food is yummy and they have good service. My favorite thing about this place is how everything tastes and seems homemade. Their baked beans have a mix of different kinds of beans. Their coleslaw has different greens in it besides just cabbage. Their sauces are unique and delicious. Our first visit I got the brisket and ribs combo. The brisket was just okay but the ribs were excellent! They were tender yet needed just the right amount of "pull" from the bone because when I eat ribs, I want to feel primitive and have to bite, rather than just have the bone fall away from the meat with one tug. However, I don't want to have to chomp and strain to get all the meat. So theirs are darn good ribs. The jalapeño poppers came out with our meal but they were way better than they look and are worth the reasonable price. The second visit I was just gonna go back for those ribs but I couldn't pass up trying a different meat. I got the combo with ribs and chicken. The chicken was cooked very well but I was disappointed that they have the same citrus sauce as the ribs. I was hoping for some different flavors. Finally, get the banana bread pudding. With or without ice cream, it's great. The whisky sauce is heavenly. Just do it. We are going to keep coming back here because the food is all really good and we love how close this location is to our house. read more

Outstanding BBQ! We had pulled pork and a brisket sandwich, both were top notch! The variety of bbq options was great. We did sweet with the pulled pork and tangy (made with peach) for the brisket. Both the meats were done to perfection and the sauces were perfectly complimentary. Of course we had sweet tea to drink. Sides were green beans- made fresh with garlic, delicious coleslaw with fresh and crispy shoe string fries. The waitress was excellent! Friendly and kept our glasses full. I want to update my review, the first time I came was when they first opened. They have really perfected the recipes, orders, service and even expanded. I'd love to come and try one of their drinks(they now have a full bar in the expanded part, great idea!) First and foremost, The sauces have been tweaked and taste a lot better than my first visit. This was my biggest complaint I had. They are all different and they've added a couple. My personal favorite is the citrus habanero. It's the perfect amount of sweet and spicy, it's a must try if you can handle a little spice! They also have daily specials, I'm not sure if they are just for lunch or if they run all day. I've tried quite a bit of the menu now and am very pleased. Some of my favorites are the sweet tea chicken(coming from someone who doesn't even like sweet tea ;P ), the Cuban sandwich, pulled pork, brisket and blue salad, 4 pigs and a cow. All the sides are made in house and are fresh such as the collards, green beans, coleslaw, chili(really good) and those jalapeños are sooo good. The Mac n cheese has also been better too! Everything has been fairly consistent there's still the issue with the garlic bread not being toasted on both sides which makes me sad, occasionally I get lucky and it will happen. But everything else it really very good. I'm really happy to have them close by and to see them doing well. The cornbread is really good. It's not dryer than the dessert like some places where you can't even finish a bite and you need to chug a full glass of water but at Top Hog, they know how to make cornbread, It was delicious. There's still quite a few things I look forward to trying! They are opening other locations around Gainesville and I will continue to give them my business! Give them a try if you tried them in the beginning and weren't impressed, they have worked out the kinks and become a great restaurant. You Can't really ask for more: they had some beginners flaws and Figured out how fixed them and executed a job well done. It's now our go to Friday spot! First time we were here was outstanding!!! Second time.....not so much. We ordered drinks and they weren't what we thought we ordered but we were confused with what they were so we didn't say anything. My husbands dinner was pretty good. Pulled pork, brisket, grits, and fried plantains. I ordered the fried chicken salad which I LOVED on our first visit. The chicken was too thin but a thick coat of breading, and not hot. Since Top Hog opened we have been meeting up with the family and friends enjoying great BBQ. The brisket is my favorite, but the ribs and pork is an all time favorite with the family. We even use the catering services for several events and they have all been great experiences. After a long day of playing disc golf in Florida, BBQ is so satisfying. Well, BBQ is satisfying for me at anytime. Haha But I found Top Hog 5 minutes from my disc golf course. Do not be fooled with it being in a strip mall with Publix. This is legitimate Florida BBQ. I ordered the pork and brisket combo and added 1/3 rack of ribs. All the meat was phenomenal. I would rate the ribs first, pork 2nd, then brisket. The ribs were grilled, easy to chew, and had a citrus BBQ glaze similar or exactly the same as their Top Hog sauce. The pork was tender and moist. The brisket was good. A bite or two of it was dry so that is why I rated it below the ribs and pork. There are 5 sauces - Top Hog (tangy tomato with citrus added), spicy (tomato), sweet (tomato with sugar and a hint of citrus), mustard (a spicy mustard), and vinegar. I liked the sweet the best followed by the spicy, Top Hog, mustard, and vinegar. The mustard and vinegar only went well with the pork in my opinion. My 2 sides were mac and cheese and beans. Both were delicious. The mac and cheese was creamy and had black pepper added to it. The baked beans were made with 3 different type of beans and I think pulled pork. Sweet tea was refreshingly sweet! I ate out in the parking lot and they gave me a refill. I have seen a restaurant or 2 not be cool and give refills. I will add Top Hog to my list of BBQ places to stop at in Gainesville. read more

I ordered takeout via DoorDash from the Jonesville Top Hog location one night, getting the BBQ Combo, which includes a choice of 2 meets and 2 sides. I ordered the pulled pork, brisket, macaroni and cheese, and baked beans. The meats were about what you'd expect but the portions felt really small, even for a takeout order. The baked beans had great flavor but the macaroni and cheese was pretty dry and flavorless. You get to choose between Texas toast and cornbread. I went with the Texas toast. Overall, Top Hog wasn't bad, though I would like to experience it while dining-in to compare what the flavors (and portion sizes) are like hot off the grill. read more

We were excited to try Top Hog after a friend recommended it. But I am sorry to say that we were disappointed. We got the pork and brisket combo, pork ribs, and fried pickles and sides (mac n cheese, coleslaw, fries and corn bread). In general the flavor was good but the meat was dry. With good BBQ, the meat should be moist, tender and soft enough to fall off the bones. This was not the case, even with BBQ sauce it was dry. We have had BBQ from many places including Austin, Texas and food trucks in Philadelphia. This, unfortunately was probably one of the worst BBQs we have had. I genuinely cannot believe that I have never been to top hog before. It was absolutely delicious. The restaurant is rather trendy, the service was friendly and overall really great. I had their version of the Cuban sandwich and it was just amazing. Nicely toasted , great pickles, great flavor on the meats. The French fries felt homemade. They had a great flavor and crisp to them. Big tip don't leave here without their sweet tea. If you got a sweet tooth make sure to grab some of their homemade baked goods. read more

Ok....so my last review of Top Hog wasn't the best BUT I'm here to change that and say I've given them another chance. WOW! We've eaten take out from TH twice in a week! My husband and I typically eat outside our home a couple times a month. Get over to Jonesville and try the BRISKET. The brisket is incredible! I lived in Houston for 10 years, I know BRISKET. The BRISKET was flavorful, eyes roll back it's so tender. I cannot express how tender this brisket is, so just go try it! Nice char without being hard. Enough fat on it without ruining my appetite. In town visiting with the grandkids and stopped in for dinner. Good kids menu, lots of items for $6 with one side and a drink. Chicken tenders for the younger one, ribs for the older one. Plenty of food for each. I had the 1/3 rack of ribs, smoky and tender! My wife ordered a salad with smoked brisket, large portion. Service was good and friendly. I would give it 3.5 stars because the service was fast and the place seemed clean. Would visit again, and try other menu items. We did carry-out and the service was okay not friendly but not rude. My party all liked their sides but had mixed feelings on their protein choices. The cornbread was a hit (garlic bread was tasty too). They have a variety of BBQ sauces to choose from and it's given on the side (which was a plus for us because some people in our party like to choose how much BBQ sauce is put on their food). Top Hog is delicious! I had my doubts because of other reviews I've read but the I'm glad I decided to give their restaurant a chance. The cobb salad and jalapeños are a must try. The first time that I went here, I didn't really pay attention just had my meal with a bunch of family and left. The second time I was by myself and gave the menu a more thorough look over. Many of these options seem really delicious, but you never know how it's going to turn out. I tried the street cooker which is a breaded chicken breast with a buffalo sauce on it and blue cheese on a bun with a side of banana bread putting and french fries. The french fries were really good. I think I would go back just for fries for a snack. The pickle I feel it was on the small side the bread pudding was really good and moist. And the sandwich was amazing. I don't often get breaded and fried foods, this one was the perfect portion size and really tasty, the breaded chicken was surprisingly crunchy and not soggy. Unlike some barbecue joints, I could tell they put effort into the sauces, it wasn't just a variety of sugar sauces with different flavors, there were more vinegar centric sauces which I love as they are tangy. read more

It was my first time coming here and the food was just okay. I got a small pulled pork sandwich and it had no flavor. The spicy sauce was its saving grace. I expected the sandwich would have a smoky flavor at the least and it just tasted like cooked pork. I got fries as my side and they were like most places crispy but you need to add salt and pepper to make it good. I'll definitely come back to try this place again but I expected a lot more for a southern staple. read more

Went to Top Hog BBQ last week. This was the first time for me, and it is a relatively new place. Walking in it is an open atmosphere, with good seating and tables. It is counter service, so you have to walk up and order your food, but then they bring it out to you. The story of how the place came into being (kickstarter campaign) is up on the wall, so that is some interesting reading for when you are waiting for your food. You will have time, as delivery times are not exactly the fastest... but for good food it is worth the small wait. It means that they are putting some time into actually getting your food prepared. I ordered the chili cheese fries as an appetizer, as my friends had already ordered the poutine. I tried both, though I know I am not a fan of poutine in the first place. Personally, I think the poutine was better than the chile cheese fries, which coming from me is saying a lot. Our fourth then arrived, and we decided on the large meat platter for four. The order was placed, and then about a ten or fifteen minute wait ensued... really not a big deal as we were comfortable talking, but I can see where it might annoy some folks who are expecting fast food speeds... you won't get that here. The food comes out... pulled pork, ribs, corn bread, corn on the cob, brisket... the whole she-bang. The corn bread was a bit on the dry side, but certainly edible. The corn on the cob was a bit overspiced but certainly edible. The pulled pork was quite decent, truthfully, and the brisket was also quite good. Perhaps a little dry, but pretty good. The ribs... they need work... they were dry and their sauce didn't spark any interest in me. The sauces available are on the sweet side. The regular and sweet are orange based, but even the spicy sauce is on the sweet side. I didn't try the yellow or vinegar based sauces. Overall this is a place that I can eat at, but frankly I will not be going out of my way to go to. I will only be returning because I am with a group that wants to go. read more

I wish I could give a 3.5 but settled on 4 stars instead of 3 just because the meat was so dang delicious. The turkey and the chicken were both incredibly flavorful and moist. I was very underwhelmed by the sides I chose. The collards were too salty with no other flavor other than... bitter collards with salt. The baked beans were way too sweet with a slight meaty flavor. The cornbread was wet and cold. I definitely would give them another try just because the meat was amazing and that is truly the whole purpose I go to BBQ joints anyway. read more
