I went on a group ride with some folks that like to go out to breakfast on Mondays, and they had chosen Farmhouse 1906 this time around. Entering it kind of reminds you of a farmhouse, I guess. Pretty standard furnishings and decoration for a country diner sort of place. Of course, we were there for breakfast, so the standard diner breakfast was on the menu. The full menu consists of burgers, sandwiches, and a couple of barbecue dishes. If there were more screens mounted on the walls I would call it a sportsbar, but that isn't the case. Our orders were taken, and I had gone for eggs, hashbrowns, and corned beef because it was St Patty's Day. Realistically one of the few times that I have legitimately had food that was appropriate for the holiday. Our food came out in a reasonable amount of time for a group of ten, so the kitchen and staff knew what they were doing. The food was fine... nothing to really shout out about, but also not bad. I don't mind themed restaurants (they can be fun). This place was designed to model the Farmhouse where the ranch hands gathered for meals before and after a long day of riding. I dug it. It gave off a warm, welcoming, one-of-the-family vibe. Kasey was my server for the meal and she was frowning before I asked one question. I placed an order for one Country Fried Steak with sides of Collard Greens and Mac & Cheese, along with some Strawberry Shortcake to round out the meal. I soon saw Cantankerous Kasey begrudgingly returning with my victuals. I don't understand this attitude. Am I supposed to be grateful she deigned to work here? Anyway, if any of you are curious like me, you may have often wondered what it was like to spend a day in jail. To that end, I admit, I got myself hauled off to the County Hoosegow. Wanting to make the most out of my tax dollars, I booked my stay to include lunch. The dry bologna sandwich you receive, along with the juice bag to wash it down, is something you try to forget. As I looked at the slop my trustee, Kasey, placed before me, I began to long for the county jail government issue bologna. The Country Fried Steak was fresh from the freezer and cooked with the precision of Stevie Wonder passing his behind-the-wheel driving test. I've been hit with hockey pucks softer than this garbage. The gravy was made in the Sysco factory and this had to be their bottom-grade slush. It was as tasty as flour and water. Wait. The sides were a step down from the entree, if that is possible. Just look at the pictures and tell me, does anything look appetizing? While I am not one to ever judge a book by its cover, as looks can be deceiving. In this case, they are not, and the adage 'a picture speaks a thousand words' is spot on. The Collard Greens were obviously from an industrial can. Hey, don't get me wrong, all restaurants use a food service, but you don't have to be cheap about it and try to finagle the dining population by using the lowest quality they have to offer. The Mac & Cheese looked more like something a dog regurgitated than actual food. It was dry and pasty on the palate--just the way it is not supposed to be. The Strawberry Shortcake is also food service, not unlike the stuff you got in high school, only worse. Kudos, 1906 Farmhouse, you officially serve Swill sans the fly. At least on this visit. We were greeted by the hostess with a smile and "We'll be right with you." We were quickly offered a table while we were still reading the daily specials board. We ordered the pork and beef special to share, a good deal at $13.99. Both meats were tender; the beef was a bit dry, however, we finished it all. The service was friendly the few times we've been here. We tried the fried green tomatoes this time and they were very good. One concern was my husband's beer, which he felt was flat but very cold, however my moscato was cold and sweet. The motive is a relaxing farm style. Very comfortable and relaxing. Good country fare. Easy solid three. Sometimes I feel they're better, sometimes I don't; we've waited 20 minutes on an in absentia waitress on a busy Friday night and walked out. So they're inconsistent but kinda sort of worth it given they're good cheap eats. While I do like their breakfast foods and have had some good luck with the specials, the sides can be salty. Not always, but sometimes. Waitresses are hit and miss too. We've had some five star hospitality here, that waitress was Awesome in every way running every cover in the place all by herself. Was a dopey hostess once and this last time in, a coven of waitresses gossiping stuffs about a customer who'd just left leaving us wondering what all they'd say about us. Unbecoming. read more

The food--straight-forward, simple, but delicious country fare--was very good, however, the service deeply lacking. The lady and guy working both did their best but that's the thing: only two people working front of the house and the guy seemed to be running food, taking orders, and even preparing to-go orders. They needed about two more waiters plus an expo it seemed. So, for that I have to deduct a star: managers need to work on their staffing it seems, even if the owner him or herself is waiting tables. Still, I will gladly give the food four stars: rich, traditional, American Southern country dishes and a great selection of sides ranging from coleslaw and collard greens to a very good okra and tomatoes and also two desserts as side options (peach cobbler and pineapple cake the night I visited). Everything resoundingly tasted fully homemade and delicious. I will be back: good regional food at very fair prices. However, again, the staffing I hope was an exception on an off night and not the rule. I know it's still hard these days to find people to work in restaurants but something needs to be done. First it is no longer Farmhouse 1906 but "Mike's Place". Been going to Farmhouse for a couple of years and was very disappointed today. My mom and I went for an early lunch, arriving at 11:15am. It was very busy with a softball tournament in town. We sat and waited for 25 minutes with no one coming to take our drink or food order. I even got up and asked the lady at the register if she could have someone come and take our order. We waited for 5 more minutes (total of 30) and still no one came. Crazy thing was there was a guy that seated folks (2sets) behind us that took there orders but completely ignored us. I spoke very loudly at the lady at the register saying "never mind, we are leaving....there are other places to eat in Newberry." A couple waiting to be seated asked us, what, is it the food? I said no, no service. They left with us. There were also 2 tables waiting for food that never arrived during that same 30 mins. They won't be in business long. Don't go there read more

I had an early dinner yesterday at 1906 Farmhouse in Newberry. Unfortunately it truly was extremely disappointing. I ordered one of the Tuesday specials, Salisbury Steak. It came out like a hard mini meatloaf with packaged brown gravy. I sent it back. The vegetables were good. The second Salisbury Steak looked as unappealing, another mini meatloaf and overdone and very dry. I ordered chicken & dumplings to go. They tasted good but extremely salty. I forgot my favorite appetizer, fried green tomatoes, full of oil, not a bit crispy. A very disappointing experience that came to a total of $ 36.00 . The service was excellent read more

Great restaurant! Pretty good size too. Just keep in mind that right now with covid, they can't order partitions for the bathrooms. Hopefully you'll be okay with a group pee and if you do more, don't forget to courtesy flush for your neighbor! Staff is very friendly too. I ordered a build your own omelet with home fries and it was delicious. I swear my boyfriend ordered everything on the menu because he had three plates of food. He plowed through the first plate within five minutes. Must have been good cuz I know he couldn't have been THAT hungry! Passed by this place during dinner time too and it looked pretty busy. We stopped in for a quick lunch. I had the burger and the boss lady had the cuban. The sandwiches were both very good. The cuban had a nice amount of meat on it. Sweet potato fries were fresh and crispy. The burger wasn't anything special but was a good bar burger. It could have used another slice of cheese. We had two different beers off the tap and both were fresh and good. The full bar a decent supply of whatever you might be looking for. Don't expect anything top shelf though. The restrooms were spotless. Yes, the restrooms were spotless. That gave them the 4th star. There is no parking lot for the restaurant. It's a free for all in the street or a side street. Newberry isn't that busy of a town and even if you have to walk a block it's a nice town. We will definitely be back. Keep up the good work! read more

We used to come here a lot for breakfast back when we were remodeling our kitchen. We thought it was close to home, decent and reasonably priced. We stopped coming when we noticed brown water being served and got grossed out. Maybe a year later we were going to give it another try and saw a big sign on the door that the board of health shut them down (yikes!) so that was a few years ago. We found ourselves in the area today and needed to kill time. I figured I'm vaccinated so we'd give it another try. I started by ordering a water! To my surprise it was crystal clear. Service was friendly and attentive. I ordered the ham club cuz I remembered they use dark turkey meat a lot and it's hard to screw up ham. I got onion rings cuz germs never survive in the fryer. Surprised again! My sandwich was not bad! Onion rings were greasy but otherwise good. My only complaint was I was charged $4.99 for subbing out the fries for onion rings. If you blink, you'd probably miss it. 1906 is a great little hometown place. We have gone several times since they opened about a year ago. Lunch is great, and dinner is too. We live about 2 miles away and so this is a great go to option for us when we don't want pizza, or to drive in to Jonesville or Gainesville for something to eat. They do have breakfast now and I have yet to make it in for that so I can only speak to lunch and dinner. We have gone just the two of us, & with bigger parties after 4H meetings. The meals have never been bad. For lunch, there are always specials that usually carry over to dinner. They get written on a dry erase board along with about 10 different side items for the day. From beef tips to chicken and rice to pork chops and more, we've tried them, and they are good! For sides, crinkle cut fries are always good. I'm a big fan of the peach cobbler. Also the (collard) greens, okra & tomatoes (not for me but friends have loved it), cauliflower (only sometimes), cheese grits (thick & no up charge for the cheese), & many more sides are all delicious. Side salads count as 2 side items usually because the cost of produce has gone us but it's spring mix with cherry tomatoes, red onion, shredded cheddar & side of dressing (this is my go to with any meal here & comes exactly as listed). They make delicious rolls that come after you get your drink order. As silly as it sounds, One of my absolute favorite things is that they bring each person their own butter. There is no fighting over a singular butter like at Texas Road House/ Outback or the likes of it, and saves you from having to ask for another one for the table. They have a liquor menu, beers and wines. All are VERY reasonably priced! They serve Pepsi products so no Coca-Cola but I'd prefer a sweet tea anyway so it doesn't bother me. I wish in all the times I have gone now that I would have taken photos of the food to share but I haven't. So here are the highlights... The 8oz sirloin with salad and a side is 100% worth it. (I'm not trying to talk bad about it but this is 10x over a better steak than any at Stonehouse down the road - I say that based on both flavor & quality of meat). The smoked chicken wings are STELLAR! They have a light smoke then quick fry for good crunch & swirled in any thick coat of sauce you desire (or get them naked & sauce on the side). Burgers are good. They don't come with fries though so know that's an add on cost. Country fried steak is better than Cracker Barrel any day of the week and comes with choice of sides. They have quite a few fried seafood basket style options but I prefer grilled so I don't usually order these but I have had a few bites and they have been great. That's about it. Came here for breakfast. Place is just 15 minutes away from my house and I never knew it was there. Omelet was delicious! One review said "if you blink you'll miss it" and it's true! We have eaten here before and I really love their smoked meat. So we came back on a Friday night for dinner. They have a live band here. Apparently the whole family is part of the band, but none of them can sing especially their young daughter. So while we listens to nails on a blackboard we ate a very average meal. they are not very busy, but for some reason the server never got to our table so the hostess not only took our order, but she also served the meal and waited on us. I got the smoked beef with mac and cheese and peach cobbler. The meat and mac served to me was cold however, it tasted really good. Strangle the cobbler was the only warm thing on the table. My husband's catfish was really good but the french fries were so salty he did not like them. I don't think I would return to this restaurant for a variety of reasons mostly because they just don't really care about the customers. This is a really small town and if you are one of them I guess they treat you like family but if they don't know you they completely ignore you. read more

Had a great experience last Sunday especially with the service. So I went back later in the week. That time I had a bad experience. The host was extremely rude. When I held out my hand for my change, he ignored my hand and laid it on the little half wall next to the register. Also the food was not good that visit. I got fried pork chops the meat was freezer burned and the coating was grainy and greasy. I also ordered white acre peas because they were on the special board so I thought they'd either be fresh or maybe frozen. But they were made from dry, and they weren't very good. The peach cobbler was great both trips. I got the barbecue burger on the first trip, it was good if rather bland, but the onion rings were great. And like I said service the first trip was really outstanding. My two stars is because of the rude host and the freezer burned grainy, greasy pork chops. read more

One star because I can't do zero. Horrible service!  Don't order the club sandwich!  Baked turkey dark meat and ham with no flavor barley even a slice of bacon.  To top it off had to wait 40 min to get this mess! Don't order the county fried steak.  Husband had what was obviously A once frozen patty the size of a bun, not sure if the mashed potatoes were fresh and white acre peas that may have been canned? Why not cook from fresh? Hope it is not normal to sit 25 min with an empty glass. Manager made excuses and didn't want to correct the ticket since I tried to eat their disgusting food. I guess eating 1 triangle out if 4 in her mind ment I liked it. One triangle I disected to try to figure out what exactly was on that sandwich. Picture below you be the judge.  Also in the managers own words we did not matter she had plenty of other customers.  Perhaps that is why they were not even half full and couldn't perform to normal expectations. The table beside us had a party of less than 20 and the food was not delivered in unison, but instead over a 20 min time frame. One poor child received a burger patty and fries and had to question the lack of a bun. I would like to know who owns the establishment, but the name and address are not found on sunbiz.org. Very good!! From walking in the door, ordering and leaving, the experience was great. Our server, Eric H, was very friendly, kept us up to date on our appetizer, recommended his favorites and was able to answer questions we had. I really can not say enough good about our server Eric, he made a very good dining experience better. The food was delicious. I ordered the maple grilled chicken with mac & cheese and collard greens, my husband ordered fried oysters with mac & cheese and collards. I must say, the collards could use some work however, I am a PICKY eater when it comes to collards. Desert, we brought home. We were too full to eat it there but we ordered blueberry pie, YUM!! On a recent road trip I passed through Newberry around lunchtime being quite hungry I looked a the limited restaurant options there and decided to stop at Farmhouse 1906. I will be honest the exterior helped sell it. The sign and brick exterior was appealing. As I walked in, the interior had an interesting look. It was a minimalist style of decorating with not much on the walls which left the attractive brickwork and paneling in full view. It changed drastically from there, as the vinyl covered booths, chairs, and carpet appeared be left over from another era or which ever tenant closed their restaurant decades prior. I was seated quickly the server was polite. I ordered the pulled pork special, it came with three sides. I got fries, macaroni & cheese, and peach cobbler. For about $10 the special was worth it. The pork came out mixed with bbq sauce already, it was pretty good. The macaroni and cheese was standard, and the fries were just right. The peach cobbler was piping hot, I enjoyed it as well. I would definitely skip the s'mores brownie which i ordered out of curiosity. It was a slice of a cold brownie partially lined with a line of marshmallows and whipped cream drops around the the edges of the plate, a bit dry as well. Overall it's a decent place to stop by to get standard country fare at a reasonable price. If you are looking for a step up, such as pork that is hand pulled or polished decor in the dining area I'd go elsewhere. 1906 is a place to get standard country fare. read more

Went for breakfast this morning. I usually don't post poor reviews, as I understand this is someone's livelihood, but our experience was very poor. The "buttermilk" pancakes were very small, and had an EXTREMELY odd taste/tang to them that I have never experienced eating pancakes anywhere in my life. Everyone at the table tasted them and agreed they were awful. I ordered hashbrowns extra crispy and they came out undercooked, as did my wife's homefries, which were also ordered extra crispy. Portion sizes were very small for the price. The only good thing was the biscuit I ordered ahead of the meal. It was very good. Our server was also friendly and prompt.
