It is the first large-scale nuclear reactor ever built, taking uranium and converting it into plutonium-239 (used in the Trinity test in New Mexico and the Fat Man bomb dropped on Nagasaki, Japan). Then there is a 45 minute bus ride to the B reactor itself (try to avail yourself of the restrooms at the visitor center, but there's a tour bus bathroom and port-a-potties at the reactor itself). The bus ride flew by as the docent talked about the area and his own experience as an engineer. Very engrossing. As you enter, there's another short presentation by a docent explaining the physics behind the reactor, and then you're set loose. There are also small docent-led presentations at specified times too if you want to get more into the nitty-gritty of the design and operation of the reactor. I wish I had more time at the reactor, maybe 15 more minutes, since there was so much to see and read. The exhibits were so well done!

The bus is a comfy coach and the 45 minute ride to the actual Reactor B is enlivened by the tour guide's info about the history and geology of the area, as well as providing background on the construction and challenges of putting together the entire site so quickly. Free bottled water is provided at the site, and there's a good mix of short talks by guides (about 15 minutes or so each) and time to walk around, read info on exhibits, and take photos. Visitor Center is clean, with chairs inside for waiting as well as benches outside. Because we'd driven almost 3 hours to the site, we took advantage of a shady bench to have our lunch. The timing of the 11:45am tour means you'll want to get something to eat before setting off, because you won't return to the Visitor Center for about 4 hours (and there is no food to purchase at the Center, and no food allowed inside the Reactor B building). There is, however, a place to eat next door to the Visitor Center (The Dive) where I can at least confirm that the beer and onion rings are excellent. We got lucky and had a relatively cool (80 degrees) day. Bathrooms at the actual park site (the reactor) are limited to portable toilets, but again, all the info presented from registration to the actual tour were clear, informative, and well done.

The museum is re-outfitted with Christmas garb and the train out front transport you, if desired, to Santas workshop about 500 yards up the way in another train car. Entrance, at least for the Christmas themed stuff, was eight dollars per adult and five dollars per kid. That ended up including cookies and hot chocolate (donate if you desire) and a train ride over to Santas workshop, in addition to all the train exhibits. It initially feels a bit steep, but you end up spending a couple hours there and it was well worth the expense. The place is run by Community volunteers which included folks in high school as well as older train enthusiast. It's nice to see the melding of generations in a place like this. There were a total of five or six rooms that had train sets of varying sizes. One out front included a Thomas the train type setup and the one in the back included cars that were about a foot tall. The set up on these things were pretty impressive and the guys there genuinely seemed like they enjoy putting it on. It's got a better than average gift shop here as well. Plenty of train toys, books and other railroad related pleasantries. The train ride was a fun and fairly unique experience. The train only went about a quarter of a mile, but it was fun for the kids to get to ride in a legit train car. On the way back, we rode in a caboose with some seats that were up above the normal sitting area. Made for a little bit better view and a reminiscing tale for the kiddos. All in all, this place is really solid. It's not huge, but they've got some neat exhibits and it's filled with people who are excited about the place.it's also a great excuse to come down to the lower Valley, hit up a tourist attraction, including the national hop museum across the street, and go check out a restaurant in the area.

I would not make a special trip to come check this out, especially from out of the country, but if you are on a road trip you can get out and stretch your legs and use the bathroom. There's lots of cool murals in this town to check out as well. There's street parking out front and the outside of the building looks kind of cool. I'd hoped to see the hops growing out front, but they were still quite tiny. The card reader was not working when we visited so cash was necessary. It starts with a video that tells you quite a bit about the hop growing process, but it is a little outdated. You then walk around on a self guided tour, ending with a store type area. There are cool things to look at, but not much signage. As others have said this museum could use some updating and TLC. It's been on my list of things to check out for awhile and I am glad I did, but definitely will not need to return for a 2nd visit unless the whole things is revamped at some point.

However, the lady that was working was so nice and very helpful and gave little information tips here and there about hops that we didn't read anywhere in museum.

The human and animal health effects of wind power are still being explored and are not yet fully understood.
