The check in was very easy and Peter's wife (she said it was too hard to pronounce her name) was very helpful , even at a 9:30PM check in, and recommended the best route for us to visit the Carrizo Plains National Monument (our reason for visiting) and the best restaurants for breakfast. The room , which looks newly painted, was much larger than I expected and included two queen size beds, a small refrigerator and coffee maker ( they also serve coffee from 5AM to 10 AM). The shower appeared to have been also recently installed.

We stopped by again on the way back home for some coffee. Good stuff. Not a fan of the matcha drink ( but too much milk) Great location for travelers, friendly service. Fun diner vibe. If you're traveling via the 166, definitely stop, have a coffee and a bite to eat.

The drive out was lovely, with lots of yellow broom blooming on the hills. We passed the Firefighter Monument that my husband tends that commemorates the firefighters killed in the Spanish Ranch fire, and checked out the growth of some oak trees around it. We pulled in for an early lunch at the Buckhorn and got a nice booth near a window. We were waited on immediately and provided water and a new menu with more of an emphasis on breakfast dishes. It was early lunch for us, and I ordered my favorite "Breakfast Salad," a Cobb salad, which has bacon and egg in it. My husband got the pulled pork sandwich, a specialty of the place. There was a delay getting the wine menu, and my first choice had run out, so I tried a white that was close to a Sauvignon Blanc from a local vineyard. I had spied some very authentic looking apple pie coming in, and we ordered a slice for desert. It came with a couple of scoops of creamy ice cream, and had a sure-enough baked through crust with juicy, cinnamony apples inside! On the way to the car, we noticed a local rancher "branding" the building, by pushing his heated up brand into the front wall of the restaurant where many other brands appeared. The paint smoked a bit, and when he was done, a spade appeared on the facade, "Spade Ranch," he told me, literally making his brand relevant to the cafe! We reveled in the beauty of the ride back, appreciated out step back in time into the history of this beautiful valley.

I imagine it would be different if there was a house full guests. Jim gave us suggestions on things we could do and places to visit. He also gave us the code for the door, the wifi password, and warnings about bears. We opted to walk around the area and enjoyed a fantastic dinner at The Perch restaurant just a few minutes walk down the road. Coffee was available at 8 the next morning, Adriana made breakfast ready by 830am. We had eggs in hash brown cups, sausages, maple scones, toast with a variety of spreads, and fresh orange juice. Everything was delicious. Sorry I didn't take pictures, I was too busy eating! I was able to eat everything on the table. I had mentioned our list of food allergies upon reserving online and also emailed the list closer to the date. The communication was excellent. I would love to stay at Old Bear B n B again. I wish I had taken photos of the room. It was decorated beautifully with photos taken by Diane as well as art on the walls by her sister. After showing us how to turn on shower, where extra amenities were we set out to explore. The town is a gem and everyone in it was so hospitable I can't wait to return. The room was perfect to come home too and enjoy a glass of wine in front of your own little fireplace. Yes you read that right. We enjoyed a fire before going to bed. It's a great place for a romantic getaway or a girls weekend. Highly recommend heading there. If you're lucky enough to talk to Diane you may even find out some of the hidden gems and where to talk a walk. Let's just say the walk I took I found Jesus. This is by far the absolute worst hotel I have ever stayed in. And the lady needs to learn to watch the way she speaks to people. It's lame as hell.
