It's a decent sushi place. I wasn't impressed with their sushi compared to other places. I ordered the Dragon Roll & Salmon Roll and my husband ordered something with spicy tuna. We also got appetizers: Mussels and their Pepper Jack Cheese bites & a kids meal: Chicken Teriyaki The rolls presented were okay. The sushi rolls? Really suspiciously soft. I am a senior master of using chopstick and some of the pieces were falling apart before I could get it to my mouth. Did I mention it was soft? The bite was like eating butter. Texture threw me off but the sushi was still tasty. Dragon roll had a really sweet sauce definitely not eel sauce. A couple avocados slices were missing in my salmon roll & a couple had more avocado than salmon. Spicy tuna was falling apart but still edible. Cheese bites delicious! Soup is delicious. Flavorful! Mussels were small but still good. Chicken teriyaki was really sweet too. Would I go back? Sure. *shrug* also when handed out to-go boxes, one of them had two dead bugs in it. Got the crunchy roll. Menu said it would come with a sweet sauce on it, but not exactly what the sweet sauce was. I expected eel sauce which is typical for a shrimp tempura roll like this. However, it ended up coming slathered in some kind of excessively sweet honey sauce that made it hard to eat. The roll its self under the sauce was fine. My husband got one of the bento boxes and that did come with quite a bit of food that he liked. Service was fast and friendly. My wife and I eat a lot of sushi. Here we ordered Hamachi sashimi and three rolls. The sashimi was very good and generous. The three rolls were absolutely delicious. The ingredients were very fresh, the sauces were excellent and the compression of the rolls were perfect. The server could have been more attentive. The prices were very reasonable for the quality of the sushi. The ambience was very western, but that was ok with us. We stopped on the way out to say "domo arigato" to the sushi chefs who are clearly of Mexican origin and they answered us in excellent Japanese. This tells me how the sushi could be so lovely. I've been to Tora a couple times over the last few years. I was just reminded how lovely the food here is. Having spent many years in Japan, I found the food here to be rather authentic. What a gem! I could not believe that the owners were not Japanese! The dressing on the salad is perfect, as is the miso. I had a plum wine- it was very sweet, but yummy to sip throughout dinner. The tonkatsu (pork cutlet) is delicious. (Ask for an extra side of sauce!) The sushi & sashimi options are tasty and the options are plentiful. My daughter and I were craving sushi and decided to try Tora Sushi and we were so happy we did! They have a great lunch menu with various options for bento, teriyaki, and our choice sushi! We each picked two 8 piece options which came with miso soup. The sushi was fresh and delicious! Miso soup was filled with seaweed and tofu in a delicious broth. We were both super satisfied. We are locals and we love Tora for the food and ambience. Lately however, we have experienced extremely long wait times for our food. Granted it was a Friday evening, but we waited almost 90 minutes between ordering and receiving our food. Takeout orders were clearly being prioritized over our order, and when we finally asked how much longer it would be, we were told a placating "just a few minutes", when it really was 20 minutes more. I would be much happier if they set accurate expectations when we came in so we could decide whether we want to wait or go somewhere else. The owners are putting the staff an impossible position by not hiring enough staff to match demand, but also not authorizing/instructing them to be honest about wait times. Also, whoever is making the rolls is going rather overboard with the sauces, my Astoria Roll was soggy instead of nicely seasoned. Please figure out how to be the place we fell in love with again! read more

If you want sushi in Astoria, this is the place. It's not the finest sushi I've ever had by any means. But it's decent. They've got all of the typical American sushi restaurant standards, from sushimi and nigari sushi, lots of sushi rolls, teryaki, tempura, sake, etc. Friendly, good service. The disparity in different service levels and attention to detail is a problem. The Pros: Jordanna (spelling) is an excellent server! And the food - when I've eaten in person - is great. The Cons: The accuracy of takeout orders is random. Last night, I ordered $51 of food. I didn't check the order before I left. When I arrived at home in Long Beach, my wife's Tempura Vegetables were nowhere to be found! Great. I'm not driving back to get the missed order. And a phone call to complain was almost useless - no one seemed to be able to comprehend that I didn't get part of my order - the 3 people I spoke to kept thinking I wanted to place a new order. We came in at 12:30 on a Wednesday afternoon and were seated right away. Their menu is HUGE! I ordered the lunch special with two types of rolls. Have been here twice for the happy hour; we dont necessarily keep to the happy hour menu, but I always like to save....$.50 or so? lol - the happy hour prices are barely changed from normal, but its very hard finding good sushi here. And it IS good. All or our pieces were nicely prepared and correct temperature. We liked the thick, ropey fried calamari, and the homemade gyoza were spicy and delicious. In Astoria for the weekend with the Yacht club. We all decided to go to the Sunday farmers market (highly recommend) we walked by this place and decided to give it a try. We were quickly seated at a nice clean big booth so we could people watch. We ordered unfiltered sake and got some water. Service was super friendly but a little slow, im guessing the labor shortage. The menu selection is extensive but we narrowed it down to Pau roll and a Bento box. The food was good and priced accordingly. My husband and I split the three entree combo with teriyaki chicken, beef and tempura. Both the chicken and beef were tasty, as were the two pieces of tempura shrimp. But those were propped up with a deep fried slice of carrot, one of squash and a third of zucchini. (I've included a photo of the carrot slice that was considered worthy of battering). When ordering, the waitress was distracted. I admit, they were BUSY, but she seemed disgruntled when asked questions about the food. "What is the deep fried chicken like?" Answer: It's chicken that's been deep fried." We also split the Philadelphia roll. Rather than arriving on one of their stylishy long plates, there were nine pieces on a square plate with sauce that eliminated the anticipated crunchy part. Our server did not check on us once. We asked for our check. She left that and departed without taking our card. It must be traditional to pay up front. When she rang the meal up at the register, we inquired about the presentation of the Philadelphia roll. "Oh, some just come like that." Gazing around the restaurant I only saw their trademark elongated plates. If you go, avoid the tempura unless you confirm it's all shrimp. Committee is out on the Philadelphia roll, as it may have been an off night. Unfortunately, servers are not supposed to have "off nights" (I've been one). read more

We were a party of 6 and sat down and immediately got rushed to order. Order drinks and food all at once. Never got water once we sat, took 30 mins to get our cocktails. 3 cocktails were order out of the 6 people. Before we got our drinks we had a lady bring us plates about 25 mins in. I mentioned that we needed water for everyone and if my cocktail still hasn't been made I'm okay without it. 30 mins they brought the 3 cocktails but still no water, same lady. 1 hour in two of us got our food brought by the same lady but still no waters. More food came out and surprise still no waters, so we asked for the 2nd time once everyone had something to eat. After asking for waters for the 2nd time and all having something to eat we were irritated so we watched the girl who waited on us. She decided to help multiple tables that just got sat, brought them plates and waters. Finally she brings waters and everyone at our table is done with their food. Not only did we never get waters until we are all done eating, two of the people I was with never received a roll they ordered. We sat there for a bit waiting for our tab but finally had to walk to the front door to have someone cash us out so we could leave. The girl that waited on us also started with a small purple tank top on and halfway through our service we watched her go to the employees only room that was right next to our table to come back out with a company black shirt on.
