I have seen this trend continue since COVID. Smaller food portions of key ingedients that have risen in cost like beef. They insist on putting salsas directly on each taco instead of giving customers a separate salsa container. Smaller tortillas equals smaller tacos. Only a 10 year or longer patron would truly notice the change. Torchy's ain't what it used to be which was great food and healthy portions. Now it is just below average. My first visit to a Torchy's~ I was quite surprised how good it was, I have tried Taco Cabana & was VERRRY disappointed I ordered the chicken fajita taco served right off the cooktop nice veggies (I did pick out the green bell peppers tho) equal parts grilled chicken with a nice sauce (not salsa) which I preferred actually. Torchy's has been a staple for as long as I can remember. I can't recall if this location was one of their first round of brick and mortar restaurants but it's ideally located off Burnet Road. This isn't one of the bigger fancier modern locations so I'm thinking it's been around for awhile and definitely has been remodeled a couple times. The inside has a few tables and there's outdoor seating as well. There's a small parking area (limited and can be full often) on either side as typical in central Austin. A plus is the parking doesn't back out on to the main road - an annoying feature of central Austin. Even though Torchy's can be found outside of Austin and outside of Texas it's still a tasty taco with fun names for their tacos as always. Their sauces are unique and they definitely have created their own style of taco - not Mexican or TexMex. I got their taco of the month, the swinger. It was so delicious like an Al Pastor taco on steroids with the yummy green sauce. I also love their avacado taco. Every bite is an explosion of flavor with that "I probably didn't need to order three but I'm so glad I did" kind of energy. The Trailer Park (trashy, of course) is a chaotic masterpiece, the Brushfire has the perfect kick, and the Green Chile Queso should honestly be illegal. It's dangerously addictive. Who doesn't love a Torchy's taco and queso? It's truly hard to beat. I love the beef fajita on corn tortilla because it easily makes two (smaller) tacos. All of their sauces/salsas are fresh and delightful. It's a go to location for any friends visiting Austin. The bathroom at this location is outside and semi-strange. I was visiting family and we ordered Torchy's the first night I got in town and it was SO good that we ordered it a second night before going to a concert. I can't remember what everyone else ordered but the Hillbilly Queso was EVERYONE's favorite...should have ordered 2. My Trailer Trash Taco (Trashy) was out of this world. Crazy good! I have been coming to this location for a couple of months since the Guadalupe location closed down. I am definitely missing that location a lot in comparison to this Torchy's. Every time I place an order for pick-up something is missing; Chips for the queso are missing, missing sauces etc. The staff is apologetic but this is happening every.single.time. When we order a large queso it is filled about half way, nugget sized chicken tender in the trailer park tacos and hardly any fajita in the steak burritos. How do you forget Chips for the queso and chips on a to go order? I tipped and spent $50 on food. I regret all of it. The food tasted worse because of this and I was warned Torchy's is trash and not because they use the word trashy. I'm starting to agree with what I was told and I think this will be my last visit and my queso just ended up in the trash since I didn't want to drink it. Really enjoyed the brushfire taco. My friend got the independent (veggie) and really enjoyed that as well! Brushfire- the mango pieces were a little hard but it was also because they weren't quite ripe. A little heavier on the sour cream (which personally I don't care for) but the jerk chicken flavor really complimented the taco well overall. We stopped here for breakfast on our last day in Austin. Torchy's is one of a number of taco places in Austin and I'd like a food truck. It just didn't have an authentic feel to it. We had the bacon egg and cheese breakfast tacos and they were tasty but ones we had the day before, from an actual food truck, were much much better. My wife also did an order of the churros and again the churros food truck by revival coffee had phenomenal, thick, tender churros and these were like straws. Unofficially on a quest to find great tacos in Austin. I checked out Torchy's and Tacodeli first because those are the two everyone talks about. The sauces at both places are comparable, but the choices here are pretty much, which format do you want you meat, whereas there it is full of different choices like fish and an amazing cauliflower taco. By the time I came here I learned that the trick is to order one taco at lunch because they're big. This is a one taco town--not like the California street tacos I'm used to. (This way is better!) I got a salmon taco that was called something Orange, but I did not really taste orange under all the spice I put on it. Maybe my bad, but usually I can taste through the heat. The salmon was cooked very well and generously portioned for a taco. Maybe it was called orange for some UT thing. It's fast food so no real ambience, and the servers are all business but friendly when you interact. Going to try more small, independent places, but in the great Austin debate between Torchy's and Tacodeli, my vote is firmly in the Tacodeli camp. Sorry, Torchy's! read more

It was great overall. Service was quick and friendly. There is outside seating and comfortable. The street corn came with a bit too much cheese on top, I had to scoop out about half out. This is a pretty no-frills Torchy's location - just a counter to order at and some indoor & outdoor seating. The set up can be a little awkward to navigate, especially if there's a line and you're just picking up an online or phone order, but I guess you just have to go around the glass wall or squeeze your way through? Anyway, there is some interesting interior design though if you take a moment to look at the walls near the ceiling. The tacos and queso are of course delicious. The Fried Avocado and Migas are among my favorites. I recently tried the grande burrito and it was not too shabby either (and definitely pretty grande). I have had good service at this location, so no complaints there. There is a very, very small parking lot accessible from Burnet or North St. Otherwise, street parking on North is the way to go. read more

Was not expecting this place to be so good. All fresh ingredients. They serve breakfast tacos all day for those that are interested in breakfast tacos. The tacos cost a little more than I am used to but they are larger than average AND worth the money. About $5 per taco. Get two of them. WORTH IT. Of the tacos we had the Baja Shrimp was the best but the Beef Fajita was right there with it. Highly recommend. Also, they have limited seating inside and also outside.
