We were running errands and stopped into this Torchy's for a late lunch; the sides (hatch chili queso & street corn) were terrific; I also really enjoyed the brushfire taco. Wasn't a big fan of either the crossroads or green chile pork taco, but that's okay--it was my first time trying them out here. One disappointing thing was each of these tacos had a TON of cilantro on them; I know cilantro is a major debate but soap taste or not, I had an entire pile of excess on a napkin and still had plenty of cilantro left on my taco and even an avocado slice I thought would've been *on* the taco instead of on the side like a pickle hahaha. Our first stop after landing in Austin? Tacos and queso of course! We came at the perfect time because there was no line and we got parking! Food came out quickly and fresh. I've never had queso before so I don't have anything to compare it to, but it was yummy. The tacos are pretty darn good. Torchy's vs. Tacodeli results! So in my Tacodeli review, I wrote that they have the best overall experience, but tacodeli edges out a win. Why? The customized Independent this specific location made for me. My mouth just waters thinking about it. So the Independent is usually friend portobello mushrooms, black beans, corn, carrots, cilantro, and avocado. This is what they did. Take out the ancho chili and replace with diable hot sauce (the best!). Remove cheese. Grill the mushroom instead of fry (because the batter contains milk/egg). Add a layer of deep fried corn tortilla on top of the flour. (Because that's what they do on the secret menu items and I want to be a part of it too. Boom. The most amazing taco I've ever put in my mouth. It is soo good that I think I dreamed about it before getting it again the next day, and right before I went to the airport. Extra thank you to the worker who made the grilled mushroom advice (Eric? I think.) He is vegetarian and made some great recommendations, and even recognized me when I came back over the next few time! Every location is hit or miss. Some locations are too packed, others have no good places to sit and eat. Others have such rude employees you wish you never had to exchange any word with them at all. However, Torchy's lives by it's motto of "Damn Good Tacos" and I'm counting down the days when I go back to Texas and get my hands on another Independent! I give this place 4 Stars because the food was tasty. It definitely was not a typical taco joint. I would say it was more gourmet so if you want Mexican food this will be a disappointment. The staff were friendly and patient with this non Austin person. Place was very clean and well lit. Much better lit than the neighborhood which was not the best. At least it didn't look so good in the dark. We also ordered the quest dip which was good. I had the Republican taco which had a sausage which was interesting BUT good. Love at first taco :-) I wasn't sure what to expect but I trusted my boy Andre and we stopped in for a quick bite. Best stop.... It's not a fancy schmancy spot, there is a small patio and a small dining area. There are TV so if you are trying to catch a game, no worries. You order at the counter and someone brings you the food. I had the trailer park taco which was so very good. I ordered it classy and not trashy (and yes that was on the menu - trashy is with queso). They are pretty big (well, at least to me) so one was enough for me. We also ordered chips and guacamole and OMG, the guacamole is sooooo very good. Andre ordered the shrimp taco and he said it was really good. At this point, he has tried a few of them :-) The prices are reasonable. Parking lot was small so be prepared to do some side street parking. Overall, two thumbs up. read more

A bit of an Austin institution at this point (the battle between it's supporters and those of TacoDeli...), this is *excellent* "chain" tacos. Which is not really a back-handed compliment - when you get tried of sampling the endless varieties and availabilities of gas-station tacos and hole in the walls, it is always a pleasant place to come back to, and get, well, *excellent* tacos. Mind you, a *lot* of the ingredients tend to involve frying, so be prepared :-) read more

Torchy's Tacos is a solid spot for tacos, and the Burnet location isn't half-bad. Ordered The Independent and Migas breakfast taco to go. The Independent is my personal go-to and a great vegetarian option. The fried mushroom had a nice, crunchy batter. The Migas was also tasty, I could eat a breakfast taco any time of day. Torchy's doesn't skimp on the taco fillings, which I appreciate. Service was fine and quick, and you can easily order two tacos for under $10. There's a small parking lot, but we didn't have an issue finding a spot early evening. The Burnet location is older and smaller compared to other locations, but I don't mind it since it tends to be less crowded. Overall Torchy's leaves me satisfied, and I'll probably return eventually. read more

So... we purchased Torchy's and Velvet Taco at the same time in the name of science. The famous Torchy's tacos. A place that may have opened a few too many locations throughout the great state of Texas and other places. Overall underwhelming but still yummy. If they were just a little bit less expensive I think I would give this place a 4 and make it a go to place. It has a wealth of flavor but ultimately not worth it. The Carribean Jerk was very good, so spicy, with a little sweet from the mango and the best taco of the three we had. The Dirty Sanchez - no thanks. I don't know just didn't do it for me. I forget the special name, but it had brisket, avocado and jalapenos. Good not great. I guess if you are here you might as well try it. However... the queso dip. By far the best bite of everything. Their chips are perfectly crisp the queso was cheesy to a great consistency and spicy. Also, there is some guac in it that you can find and get excited by. THE VERDICT: Get it for fun. Eat it for the greater good. Not a must go place. But in a way... sort of a must go place because they don't exist everywhere. I can say, you must get that queso! read more

Their tacos are so good. I regret not trying them sooner. I had a trailer park taco here, and of course I made it trashy. When I go hedonistic I go all the way, for better or worse. It was everything I thought it would be. I also got a chicken fajita taco, and while it's a little scary that was my "healthy" choice, it was equally delicious. I'm moving to Austin (and Texas for that matter) in a month, and I am both excited to become 1-part human and 1-part taco. This is one of the worst torchy's chains. The food always tastes like a steamed dish rag. They need to seriously change out their oil or clean the cooking surface. It just has that taste. Torchy's never disappoints. I used to go there with people for the fist time and try to tell them what the best tacos were and realize that by the time I was done, I'd basically just recommended the whole menu. That's kind of the way it is though. The tacos are just ridiculously tasty. I typically get a brush fire and whatever the taco of the month is, but I'm also in love with the crossroads (brisket on a taco, yes please!), the republican (it's a spicy hot dog taco, how can you not like that?), and the chicken fajita (it's just damn good). My wife always gets the fried avocado taco (which is an awesome idea), but I find that the refried beans mask too much of the avocado flavor for it to be in my top picks. If you combine that with the fact that it's dirt cheap, at least for me, the trick is avoiding having dinner here several nights a week. Seriously, dinner for two for less than $14 with tax and tip is absurd. The only issue is that there's not very much actual parking, but if you drive down North St into the neighborhood behind the Torchy's, you can almost always find something pretty close. read more

If you're ordering to go, don't count on your meal being correct. Not once have I gone there and ordered my meal to go and it's been right. I ask for no cilantro, comes with cilantro. I ask for hillbilly queso, there's no chorizo. Flour tortilla, comes on corn. Once they gave me the completely wrong order. I've stopped going, gave it another chance months later, three times now. 11+ locations in Austin and I've been to this one the most. Not my favorite in terms of flavor and feeling satisfied after a meal, but a well-known taco chain that doesn't keep you waiting too long for your order. I recommend against their tacos that have creative twists on flavors that might sound questionable together. I've been to Torchy's a handful of times to keep an open mind but I usually end up just eating the tacos so that I'd be full for the next few hours. If you'd like to check out this chain at least once, I recommend the queso and their more classic sounding tacos. This location is a lot smaller than the other ones but they make up for it by stuffing their tacos full. I would say that half their restaurant is indoor seating and half is outdoor. They have parking spots all around the building so it wasn't a problem. We came around dinner time and there wasn't a line. We got our food within 10 mins. I always get 2 fried avocado tacos. Yes, this is a vegetarian taco. Lemme first just tell you that I LOVE meat. But this place makes REALLY good vegetarian tacos that... I actually prefer it over the ones with meat. We usually love torchy's however, maybe it's this location that sucks? This location (burnet st.) is closest to us so we ordered online last night. It was a Saturday night so we expected a wait.. No problem! In fact after placing our order for a group of 4 we waited patiently to pick up. When we got home and started laying out the food everything was cold and we were missing our large queso we ordered. We double checked that we didn't make a mistake by not ordering but nope. We did and we were charged for it. After opening our cold tacos to add sauces they were super messy and missing ingredients. This isn't my favorite Torchys location (see other reviews) but it is my fave one to take friends in town to because you can't beat the South Congress location. Expect to wait in line on weekends and peak hours. If you haven't been to a Torchys, 1) something is seriously wrong in your life and 2) drop everything and go now. They have texmex taco deliciousness down. Warning the reason this location is subpar is their lack of alcohol. In this area it would be ideal for a marg and tacos before walking down soco. Granted it's not their fault! They are located directly across from a school. What to order? If you're decently hungry I would still recommend only 2 tacos then split the queso with your table. Their queso is heaven in a bowl. My goto taco is the Trailer Park, make it trashy. But they have more tacos than you will know what to do with. Insider tip, they also have a secret menu they will give you if you go up and ask. My main gets the Ace of Spades. All in all. Torchys you have my heart. read more
