They offer free gumbo sample. It was delicious! I order one Togo with collard green rice on the aide. Along with my red snapper Prawn, my daughter got hotlinks and chilli cheese fries

Tori's food is addictive, especially their buttered hot water cornbread. I regret taking too long to revisit. I ordered their food twice in nine days! My mom tried the gumbo for the first time and she was so pleased that I had to order a large the second time. Lots of meat, broth is heavily seasoned, chunky with veggies. Just amazing! Tried their meatloaf for the first time. Meatloaf was very wholesome with (probably) an oat binder which added to the texture. Huge serving that comes with chunky gravy. I like their meatloaf better than costco's. Reordered a second time. I selected the fried pork chops cooked with a flavorful seasoned crust. Meat was tender and the small bits of fat were rendered perfectly. I actually nibbled on the bones to get it all. Will be reordering. Mac & cheese was better this time around. Looked baked on top. It's not creamy, but it tasted like real cheese and the noodles were not mushy. We liked it, except my mom didn't. Ordered a third time despite my first impression from years ago and will be reordering. Their potato salad was unique to me. Like a whipped and airy base, but with chunks potato. Flavors were a little tart, a little vinegar, slight sweetness (maybe miracle whip?) and a nice spicy kick. Ordered twice. Black Eyed Peas would probably be the perfect dish for a vegetarian. Full of veggies, including okra but not slimy. Very spicy & flavorful, cooked tender. I don't know if the broth is meat based so probably best to ask if you're avoiding meat products. Ordered twice! Greens were tender, spicy, bitter, not overly salted. Tasted very healthy. Always a reorder. Banana pudding was creamy with strong banana flavor and a thick whipped topping. No actual banana slices. Nila wafers were still crispy not mushy. Will order again despite lack of banana slices.

Please don't judge a book by its cover and get steered away from the appearance of Tori's Place because it was absolutely enjoyable. There is a parking lot located right next to the restaurant. It is a bit dark inside where the seating is but that did not bother me at all, especially because it was a warm day. The fried catfish was crispy, fresh, and perfectly battered. The gumbo was packed with lots of flavor. The hot water cornbread changed my life. My taste palette was pleased and now my cornbread expectation has risen. The ladies running the place were so sweet and appreciative. I highly recommend Tori's Place and cannot wait to stop by the next time I'm in Sac!

If I could eat her every day I would! I was brought home catfish and Mac from my boyfriend and even after the trip home this might be one of the top 3 catfished I have ever ate. It was light and battered perfectly and the Mac has a slight spice to it and was to die for and don't get me started on the CORNBREAD! I can't wait to put this spot on my list to try the whole menu!

Large Gumbo. It's even better the next day!

TLDR: Two words: Fried Chicken! Or Gumbo! Well, that's one word but still... or hot-water cornbread, which is kinda three words and tastes just as good! Just GO there! Ignore the appearance of the exterior and pick almost anything on the menu, engage a bit of patience as you wait for your food, then prepare to be blown away by the flavors that will massage your taste buds into blissful submission. If you're in a rush, call-in your order at least 20 mins before you plan to pick up. The rest of the story: First, Miss Tori is one of the nicest people I have met in Sacramento. And she knows her way around a kitchen. I have been here several times and the staff, who seem to be mostly relatives, are always cordial and courteous. The portions are large, so bring your appetite or prepare to have left-overs. My personal favorites: Fried Chicken - Crispy, crunchy breaded crust with well seasoned, tender and juicy pieces, including the breast. Red Snapper - wonderfully, crispy and fresh with delicious breading Gumbo - this one surprised me! Healthy portions of chicken, sausage, shrimp, with vegetables and rice in a richly seasoned broth with a nice spicy kick. If you are offered a free sample, your response should be YES! Hot water cornbread - all of the meals come with this as a side. Its a thick, pancake of cornbread that has a hint of sweetness that plays well with the buttery richness. Keep napkins handy because they are kind of buttery, unless you are really from the old-school south and mix it with the greens, which are also awesome! Bottom line, this is the best soul food in Sacramento!

Red snapper/shrimp greens and salty black eyed peas

Shrimp/red snapper and hot water cornbread was SOOO GOOD! As per usual! I got greens and black eyed peas for the sides. The greens are a hit/miss for me (a miss this round :( sorry) but what really got me sideways were the black eyed peas! Very flavorful! Always well seasoned BUT THIS TIME!?!? WAAAAYY too much salt! One taste not even a spoonful because they were still very hot- but that small taste was so SALTY!! OMG!! I couldn't even swallow them I had to DISCARD from my mouth IMMEDIATELY!! It was like someone put a heaping tablespoon of salt in MY small dish! I thought maybe it was me since I really don't use a lot of salt in my food at home so I gave them to my daughter to taste. Mind you I have to tell HER to ease up when she seasons her own food at home! She couldn't eat them because of the excess saltiness! I LOVE Tori's place but some of the food has been a little like 'NOT Tories' for about a year or so. I come back every now and again because I like (liked) the food but I don't know.. maybe she has different people in the kitchen... been coming here for years. Come on Tori's place! I LOVE the food and supporting you so please take this review into consideration moving forward!

Always a legit foodie experience! For me, it's the hot water corn bread. You just can't find that dish anywhere; makes the joint unique. And their vibe radiates local grub spot...for the neighborhood. Truly a great place to eat!

    Do they sell salmon croquettes?

Does the meatloaf and gravy have pork in it?

Thats a good question, years ago many people cooked using lard(pork fat)- the best for making fried food- many still use, Tori is friendly and many patrons do not eat pork, for different reasons.

Dang people if you are ever open after 6 i will for sure come out here for dinner but i can't get the kids corralled before then :/ please let me know if your hours change ok?

Maybe you should get those kids in order If its somewhere you wanna go....corral those kids

They were decent, but I probably wouldn't order them again. Next were the mains. Oxtail over rice, Fried fish, and fried chicken. Everything great, but the oxtail was easily my favorite & probably the best oxtail dish i've had from a soul food restaurant. Tender and delicious. On to the sides. Mac & cheese, yams, potato salad, country gravy over rice. Again, all great, but the mac & cheese stole the show. We all know how hard it is to find good restaurant mac and cheese, and this one definitely stood out. Friendly staff & food came out hot and fresh. This spot is definitely going to become a go-to whenever in Sacramento.

I hadn't been since last summer and was happy to return. Parking can be a bit hectic, but once you're inside, the atmosphere makes up for it. It's a family-owned spot, and you can feel it right away -- everyone is kind, welcoming, and takes the time to check in on you. We came for breakfast, but they also offer lunch and barbecue options, so there's plenty to choose from depending on when you go. They've also expanded and now have a location in Elk Grove. I ordered the French toast plate, which came with thick-cut slices of bread, eggs, and bacon. The French toast was soft on the inside with a nice golden finish, full of flavor without being overly sweet. The eggs were well seasoned, and the bacon was cooked just right. BB ordered the cheeseburger with fries and a side of grits. The burger was juicy with grilled onions and melted cheese, and the fries had that crispy, beer-battered texture. Everything came out hot and satisfying. Overall, a great spot for comfort food with genuinely friendly service. Definitely planning to come back -- especially for the biscuits and gravy next time.

It was 1.5 miles away, but closing in less than an hour. I decided to go by and see it they were still serving. I wasn't really expecting much 45 mins before closing. I parked right in front, and saw they were cleaning up the dining room. So I asked the young lady if they were still open, and she said "Yes, c'mon in!" I ordered the fried chicken combo meal with mac 'n cheese and green beans. Total was $20.04. I thought it was funny that they price it at $20.04. It would actually look better if it was $19.99. How was the food? I was surprised. 35 mins before closing, and the fried chicken was still moist with a spicy heat to the flavor. The skin was lightly crisp. The mac 'n cheese was creamy. The green beans were just okay. The food was being kept in warmers. There's nothing wrong with keeping food in warmers as long as holding times are observed and proper temps are maintained. As I left both the young lady and the server thanked me for coming. Next time, I will have to return at around dinner time. Support Local Business in the SF Bay Area!
