I suppose they thought I wouldn't be able to tell the difference, but I'm pescatarian and eat chicken occasionally. Today I ordered those fried chicken wings again. Because the last time I got them, they were delicious! But today, I tasted one piece and it was SPOILED, DARK, SMELLY, they all were to be chicken wings. This is the first time I've been here in years. Service was friendly and fast. I ordered catfish nuggets and gumbo. The fish was lightly fried and tasted fresh. The small gumbo was a generous portion and served with rice as is traditional. Well seasoned and tasty. The only thing I didn't care for was the fries which were coated with something designed to make them crispy. This is similar to what Burger King used to do which proved unpopular. It is a personal preference that fries be plain potatoes fried twice for crispiness. JJ's is mostly a takeout shop, but they do have several tables with chairs for dine in. Crab, shrimp, and chicken in savory broth came with a scoop of rice. This was yummy, we'll be back for this! Jambalaya had great cajun spices. We ordered in the time of COVID19, and it was a basic order. 2 orders of jumbalya, fried catfish nuggets, a side of okra, and banana pudding. Sounds simple enough. Come to find out that they canceled the order via email. We had no idea, and just happen to check. We called the restaurant to see if they were out of a specific item(s) and they confirmed that they had each of the listed items. Okay. So, we order again. During the order, the size options for the jambalaya (small, medium, and large) dwindles down to medium. Ok. We get 2 mediums. I decided to add an order of Red Beans and Rice. This order went through. So, the delivery person from Door Dash decided to not notify us when they arrived or when the food was left at the door. That was fun! And lastly, our order fulfillment. Guess what! There was zero jambalaya! They gave us two orders of red beans and rice. Yay! I won't bother with the quality of the food because no matter which adjectives I use, itll sorely undersell how atrocious it was. The red beans and rice were bland. The catfish was 95% cornmeal. This place needs a review. 2 o'clock Saturday afternoon on my way home I did an order for pickup on DoorDash. Ordered a small 2 item oyster and ocean perch. Upon waking in there were people which is always a good sign and I had high hopes. Thanks JJ! Less than a mile I drove home I and got a little nervous because hot fried food was wrapped like a well spent Christmas gift which took more than a seconds to unwrap. It's not because I had a craving for fish fry but it was good! I forgot they use the big oyster and I prefer the smaller ones but they were fried golden lightly battered and the perch was good too! Wings were mini party size, everything was dry as hell, mac n cheese was warmed up in the plastic, Mac salad was worse than store bought (didn't even know that was possible). Literally craving chicken all day. Saw a Popeyes chicken in Oregon and my mind was telling me to find chicken for hours. And about 930pm(?) found JJs. I was genuinely surprised when i got my small chicken tenders. First off they are not small. Like they're huge. And it comes with fries, and bread (if you want to make a sandwich). They do offer ketchup or a hot sauce as condiments. The fried chicken had a flavor that is distinctly different and really impressed my taste buds. It was very crispy on the outside and so so juicy on the inside. Did I mention that these tenders are huge? There is absolutely no way to compare JJ Fish and Chicken with any fast food chicken tenders. Definitely worth the $12.99 for all this food. Highly recommended. Super glad I found this place on my 1,000 mile drive from Washington to San Diego. read more

I'm normally a fan but can't get with the new cooking style. My Buffalo fish (Expensive) had a shell/helmet/shield. We had three orders of Buffalo fish. Got home and they looked hard, tried to pinch and the shell was fried hard. My mother specifically told them not to fry it hard. Why would you cornmeal batter fish? It's cornmeal but it's supposed to be light. You had to peel the helmet off to get to the meat. The meat had no seasoning so it was a struggle to get to two pieces. The food that I got from the restaurant was pretty bad. The oysters and scallops were old and fishy and I couldn't eat them. I did find a curly black hair fried into one of the oysters. The red snapper was pretty okay. The collard greens were okay, but definitely just from a can. The hush puppies were actually pretty great, some of the best I've had. The Mac and cheese is horrendous, I honestly don't think they used cheese when I went. It was really tangy and funky tasting. Overall, I can only speak positively about the hush puppies, everything else I had was pretty bad. Whenever i came to Sacramento i would stop here to eat and it was always packed so i felt I didn't need to look at Yelp but that was my biggest mistake ever. They offer serval kinds of fish but really only have one fish that the owner slash cook said after I called and told them the fish they gave me wasn't Catfish. When I called they told me they would either reimburse me or give me another order once I got there the owner then admitted to me that this is the only fish they have but told me when I wanted gizzards they didn't have any. So why didn't they say there wasn't any Catfish? The place was totally empty and now I see why. It is not the comfortable relax setting i normally speak about. It is truly understood why the place has low reviews and totally empty. This was by far the worst restaurant experience I have ever encountered in Sacramento thus far. How many other people have been fooled by this owner making people think they are getting something they didn't get but was overcharged for? The only reason I am giving them any star is to post this review. I will be definitely checking the Yelp reviews from here on out and not assuming a restaurant is still the same. Tried this place for the first time after always seeing it on DoorDash. If you're looking to eat late, this is a go to place. I ordered their wings, calamari, fries, and tried two different pies. The wings were pretty good, lots of flavor (you can taste that delicious MSG lol), the fries were okay, and the calamari was really good. They provided hot sauce, ketchup, ranch, and tartar sauce. I ordered fried oysters, fried extra lightly. I stressed, as long as they were hot, they couldn't be under cooked, but I didn't want them crispy at all. I told them I liked them cooked so lightly that many people would return them because they thought they were under cooked. I should have checked before I left.
