WHY WE WENT HERE: - dinner THE LOOK (FROM THE OUTSIDE): - located on Fruitridge Rd in between Martin Luther King Jr Blvd and Mendocino Blvd (nearby the Chevron and Taqueria El Paisano) THE LOOK (FROM THE INSIDE): - very much a hole in the wall; smells good though! THE MENU: - JJ's special - fish orders - fish by the piece - fish combo - chicken orders - chicken by the piece - chicken combo - side orders - kid's meal - desserts - beverages WHAT WE ORDERED: - jumbo shrimp - chicken 4 piece thighs - chicken 3 thighs (legs were out) 3 wings combo - collard greens - red beans and rice THE TASTE: - all the food was HITTING for us (the fried stuff anyway) - collard greens and the red beans and rice were just OK - all the condiments were great too! first time personally seeing lemon juice packets! CUSTOMER SERVICE: - not the most bubbly personality, but got the job done

The spoiled chicken wings I didn't eat, I took them apart so you could see inside.

No stars if I could! The first time I went I loved it! Even though I ordered catfish and they gave basa instead. I suppose they thought I wouldn't be able to tell the difference, but I'm pescatarian and eat chicken occasionally. Today I ordered those fried chicken wings again. Because the last time I got them, they were delicious! But today, I tasted one piece and it was SPOILED, DARK, SMELLY, they all were to be chicken wings. I phoned them and I was told to bring the plate back, they would refund me within two days. They didn't offer to compensate me for my time and gas! I'm sick with more than one immunocompromising disorder. This could have been all bad for me. They need to do much better than serving spoiled food to customers!!!

Thank you Raheem A. for your recommendation of this place. You're right, the food is good :) Looking over their menu, we spotted the gumbo and jambalaya! Plus, we just had fish and chicken yesterday so... All around pleased with our dine out experience. Lots of parking out front and our order came out quick! Gumbo was delicious! Crab, shrimp, and chicken in savory broth came with a scoop of rice. This was yummy, we'll be back for this! Jambalaya had great cajun spices. Shrimp, chicken, and sausage in this delicious rice dish. It was hearty and flavorful. Such a huge refrigerator showcase of desserts too. They make it impossible to leave without a slice. Carrot cake almost came home in our bag but we went for the sweet potato pie instead. 'Nana puddin' next time! We had great customer service and our order was quick. We'll be back :)

Problem with the menu online, combo plates don't offer jumbo shrimp as a option... but anyway. Got em with a side of greens. Greens were good, idk if they use pork or turkey... Everything came hot even though they said they would be here in 12 minutes and got here in like 22. I am full, though, thanks for a good hot meal. PS did you change up the fries? PPS thanks for all the hotsauce, but no slackmojis .com/emojis/7058-forky

We also got the pimento cheese dip and it was warm and gooey and delicious and the chips that came with it were perfectly seasoned. Our fries were perfectly crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. it was my dads birthday and he got the peach cobbler and said it was the best he's ever had. Out waiter was kind enough to bring candles which was so sweet of her! My sister, grandma, and I shared the red velvet cake and it was amazing. You could taste the history and personality of every dish. I have never tasted such great food. we sat on the patio and it was so gorgeous. They had a plaque about the green book and the history of the time period and what it was. My history loving family found that super cool. The atmosphere inside was great. The artwork was beautifu. Also he service was impeccabl. Our server, isis, was incredibly kind and helpfu. The service was speedy which is great bc my grandma was tired and usually had dinner at four (it was 7). However we still had enough time between appetizers, the meal, and dessert. Overall my family and I will be going back and I think we found our new favorite restauran. I can't wait to tell and bring everyone I know here! thank you to all the staff for a wonderful night.

When we ordered we asked what was on the ox rail fries and the cashier unfortunately was unable to tell us. Stated it was similar to carne asada fries, which is wasn't. No big deal though. While we were ordering there was a sign saying there was a gumbo special for the day. We ordered and paid. The cook came out stating there was no gumbo so we opted for shrimp and grits instead. We got ox tail fries, corn bread, beans, smothered pork chops, shrimp n grits, banana pudding, peach cobbler. So let's get into it. The gravy was delicious but after a while became salty and you didn't want more. But man it was good and served very hot! Ox tail was cooked perfectly and served over fried potatoes. Pretty good. The shrimp and grits were cheesy but was a little too much sauce from what I am used to. Mac n cheese was decent. Banana pudding was good. They put yellow Oreos and chessman cookies which was yummy. The peach cobbler was also good as well I just wish that it came with a side of ice cream. The beans were absolutely delicious and well seasoned. But I'd have to say the star of the show was the cornbread and the amazing butter they put on top. I'd def go back just for the cornbread! I could see at that with the beans literally all day! Cons: expensive and there was a dip in the floor that was covered with a rug that people still seemed to stumble over.

I hadn't been since last summer and was happy to return. Parking can be a bit hectic, but once you're inside, the atmosphere makes up for it. It's a family-owned spot, and you can feel it right away -- everyone is kind, welcoming, and takes the time to check in on you. We came for breakfast, but they also offer lunch and barbecue options, so there's plenty to choose from depending on when you go. They've also expanded and now have a location in Elk Grove. I ordered the French toast plate, which came with thick-cut slices of bread, eggs, and bacon. The French toast was soft on the inside with a nice golden finish, full of flavor without being overly sweet. The eggs were well seasoned, and the bacon was cooked just right. BB ordered the cheeseburger with fries and a side of grits. The burger was juicy with grilled onions and melted cheese, and the fries had that crispy, beer-battered texture. Everything came out hot and satisfying. Overall, a great spot for comfort food with genuinely friendly service. Definitely planning to come back -- especially for the biscuits and gravy next time.

They had some unique syrups, such as bourbon caramel and praline. The syrups were on the more subtle side, which some people prefer. I am not one of those people, but it was a good latte for a breakfast/ brunch spot. I wish there was more ice tho.  The skillet cornbread with sharp cheddar, creamed corn & garlic, honey butter & house made seasonal jam on the side was a great starter dish. I enjoyed the garlic and cheese. The temperature/ toastiness of this was yummy.  We couldn't decide between the cornbread and the sticky bun, so the only obvious solution was to order both. The topping of the sticky bun was delicious. It was almost pecan pie adjacent.

We learned on our very first visit how good the gumbo is and it's become a must ever since. The people who work here are friendly and you can tell they have a lot of regulars who stop in for food. There's a gravel lot right next to the building and you can take your food to go or enjoy it there. Our food took about 15-20 minutes and then we took it home to enjoy. The portions are definitely fair for the price. They also pack everything well for the ride home. The gumbo is our favorite, it's flavorful and packed with protein like their sausage, chicken, and shrimp and has just a hint of spice. We tried their riblets for the first time and it was a generous portion and we really enjoyed the bbq sauce they used. The mac and cheese is good, but I like mine creamier. It does have a little spice which was nice. The dressing was packed with flavor and we were excited they offered this side because you don't see it everywhere. Their hot water cornbread is definitely something they're known for and is really good on its own or dipped into the gumbo. The Palmer here tastes like Brisk raspberry tea mixed with lemonade, and we really enjoy this twist on it. Overall this spot is a local gem and we love visiting.

The lobster bites came with a lemon wedge and their house Thousand Island sauce, and that sauce was incredible. The combination of the crispy lobster, lemon, and sauce worked perfectly together. The broccolini was also seasoned really well and paired nicely with the grilled lemon. I ordered an Old Fashioned, and it was one of the smoothest I've had. One detail I loved was that they stamped the restaurant's logo into the ice cube. Small touch, but really cool. For my main course, I ordered the Grilled Huli Huli Chicken with a crispy rice cake, pineapple, greens, and a house sauce that completely made the dish. The sweet and tangy flavor paired perfectly with the chicken. Me and my girlfriend also shared the mac and cheese, and honestly, this was one of the best mac and cheeses I've had. It was rich, creamy, well-seasoned, and the breadcrumbs on top added the perfect texture. My girlfriend ordered the braised short rib with garlic mashed potatoes and carrot purée. The short rib was so tender it practically fell apart with a fork. Everything on the plate was delicious. One thing that surprised me was the portion sizes. Everything was very filling, and we ended up taking some food home. By the time dessert came around, we were already pretty full, but there was no way we were skipping it. To finish the night, we shared the Ghirardelli triple chocolate brownie with vanilla ice cream, caramel sauce, and strawberries. It was the perfect way to end the meal. The restaurant was busy and lively, but it never felt crowded. The tables were spaced out really well, so my girlfriend and I could still enjoy our conversation and watch the basketball game. I also appreciated seeing Chef Q and his wife walking around and checking on guests throughout the night. They stopped by tables to see how everyone was enjoying their food, which was a really nice touch. I even had the chance to take a picture with Chef Q before we left, which was super cool. Between the food, service, atmosphere, and attention to detail, this is easily one of the top restaurants I've been to in Sacramento. Definitely worth a visit.

The broccolini was great too (it was the veggie I chose). And... the carrot cake! Bravo! I love a great carrot cake. The unfortunate negative for us? And I hate to even mention this, but it was definitely a thing for us... the musician, whom I LOVED for his talent and music... was just too loud for us. Not sure what to suggest on that. We enjoyed the music, but we couldn't hear anything else. We couldn't hear each other... we couldn't hear the waiter more often than not... the horn (clarinet) just blasted us out. We weren't RIGHT next to him, we were a couple tables away... but the same side of the room as him. In the future, I'll try to be seated further away if I'm with a group that wants to talk. I'll be back... but maybe after I take an ASL course.
