Yesss finally tried fixins!! It did not disappoint! I grew up on soul food so my expectations were as high as you can get. I left completely satisfied. The fried fish was crispy and delicious, the cornbread and collard greens reminded me of my grandmas cooking, the okra, the fried chicken, the grits, man it was all amazing. I will definitely be back next time I'm craving a taste of home. Food: 5 Service: 4.9 Ambiance: 4.6 Value: 4.6 Marcels foodie score: 4.8

Smothered Pork Chop with Candied Yams and Grits

Excellent restaurant! Highly recommend. Tried Fixins Soul Kitchen for lunch to celebrate a Sac State Masters Graduate. We made a reservations but ended up coming earlier than planned. Thankfully, they were able to seat us right away. Service was good. Food was excellent. Restaurant was clean. Everything we ordered was delicious, from the appetizer and entrees to the peach cobbler pie. I ordered the 2 piece chicken and waffle with a breast and wing - excellent choice! Others ordered the smothered pork chop, the fried fish, the gumbo and more. We left happy and full. Excellent dining experience all around. I will definitely be back when in Sacramento.

Craving soul food? Fixins Soul Kitchen is the ultimate spot in Sacramento! Here's the breakdown of our feast: Fried Chicken: Love that you can customize this (2 or 3 piece, white or dark meat). It's exactly what you want: crispy on the outside, tender and juicy on the inside. Served with two fixins and a biscuit! Smothered Pork Chops: Tender, savory, and topped with those signature pickled onions and two fixins. Absolute comfort on a plate. (Pro tip: get the mac and cheese as one of your sides!) Peach Cobbler: The perfect sweet finish. The warm cobbler with that cold, melting ice cream is a must-order. Sweet Tea: Perfectly chilled and refreshing! We always leave here incredibly full and happy. The staff is consistently friendly and accommodating, and the ambiance is lively. Tip: Expect a wait, especially on weekends--this place is popular for a reason! This is a staple on our list every time we're in town.

I have come here before a couple of years ago and got the sheimp and grits. I wasn't thrilled with it because the gravy was too thick and the vegetables were too chunky for my taste. I came here a couple of weeks ago with a friend of mine to give it another try. She had the shrimp and grits and I decided to give the oxtail a try. I shared with the waitress how I love my hot food hot, and asked would it be hot. She said it would be and sadly it arrived lukewarm. Literally, lukewarm. Not her fault, that is on the kitchen. Sooo they brought me out another plate which was better, but not out of the pot hot. I appreciated the effort though. They were a bit tough and not very well seasoned. I took my leftovers home and when I recooked them, PERFECTION! had they just cooked them a bit longer themselves, it would have been perfect. I gave it 4 stars for these reasons. I would still come back because some days things are just off and that can happen at any restaurant. The fried devil eggs are excellent!!! I took an order to go home. We shared the peach cobbler for dessert. Looking forward to coming back and being able to update my review to 5 stars!

We wanted to try something new. We made reservations on open table and waited maybe 5 mins after them. It was pretty busy so you know it's good. The decor was nice and they had music outside, it was definitely a vibe for any and all. Our waitress was super friendly. Started off with the fish nuggets, Sooo delish, the sauces it came with were really good too. The drinks were huge and really good. My daughter had chicken strips and fries, my husband ordered the Gumbo with shrimp and added some grits and I had the oxtails. Everything was super flavorful. This is definitely a spot we will be coming back to.

Oxtail dinner with Mac and cheese.

My daughter and I stopped by here on the way to a concert at Thunder Valley and she had been wanting to try oxtail, so Fixins was our destination to make that happen. Let's dive in... Ambiance - The interior of this place is quite large. Tables, booths, and outdoor seating guaranteed to fit groups of all sizes. They had southern hospitality decor and it was a nice spacious place to dine. They have a bar area too with sports so you can come watch the game there too. Service - The service was great. We were greeted as soon as we stepped in the door and taken a table immediately. Terri, our fantastic server, was extremely friendly and helpful. Absolutely no complaints at all when it comes to the service. There was a slight mishap when my entree came (it wasn't what I ordered), but they fixed it right away and did not cause any delays with us getting our food. Food - The food is great! I got the fried chicken w/ mac & cheese and yams. Everything was delicious. The fried chicken was scrumptious and even the meat was very flavorful. My daughter got the oxtail with the mac & cheese and she really liked her dish too. We were both in a food coma by the time we threw in the towel. Overall, this is a must stop if you're in the mood for some soul food. I would definitely stop by here again.

Soul food - so GOOD!! Service is friendly, and the food was just amazing. I highly recommend the gumbo, mac and cheese fried chicken, yams, cornbread collard greens - were all delish.... we will definitely be back!! I miss this southern cooking and it was sooo good to get it here in Sacramento!! I want to try the catfish next time!

Something was off not sure what. We can early cause parking is bad 11:45 reservation 12:15. One person told us we had to wait until that time, another person starting seating the walk-ins, another person came from the back asking why we were sitting and they had someone sit us it 12 now. Them catfish bites we amazing and I shared them with my friend who got the deviled eggs. We sat outside which was nice and refreshing. My food was good but them greens took the cake for me. I'll go back just not a Sunday or that early.

This was supposed to be a chicken breast but the bones say otherwise.

I've eaten here several times in person, and my experiences have been very good. The chicken and waffles is my favorite dish, and when dining in, the portions have always been generous. I always request breast meat and receive a normal-sized chicken breast. Unfortunately, my first delivery order was a very different experience. I ordered the smothered chicken and again requested breast meat. The two pieces of chicken looked large at first glance, but they were almost entirely breading. One piece definitely wasn't breast meat--it appeared to have a small leg bone in it and contained maybe two bites of actual meat. The other piece wasn't much better, with only about four bites of meat. Between the two pieces, I'd estimate they were about 90% breading and very little chicken. The amount of gravy was about half of what it should have been. The side portions were also shockingly small for the price. I understand that delivery apps charge higher menu prices, but paying $7 for what looked like about a half-cup serving is hard to justify. As for the food itself, the candied yams and mac and cheese were excellent. The fried fish was also delicious. The black-eyed peas were decent, but the greens were disappointing--they lacked spiciness and just didn't have the right flavor. Based on my dine-in experiences, I know this restaurant can do much better. However, this delivery order felt like a completely different standard of quality, especially when it came to the chicken portions.

I've become a regular at Fixin's Soul Kitchen - they are consistently tasty and now that I can make a reservation online the wait is gone. My only issue is that the two times we have had the male servers, our wait time literally doubles. I'm going to keep showing up, I'm hoping they start showing up ready to serve also, like, bring the food when it's ready (cold grits ain't fun) and bring the check when we're done (we waited a very long time on Valentin's day). They still get a top-spot rating, everything remains delicious and the atmosphere is fun whether your party is small or a large group.

Happy hour page showing $6 margaritas
Yesenia R.

I really wanted to like this place because the vibe and music were great but unfortunately the service and happy hour confusion made the experience disappointing. Stopped by on a Friday after work with a group of about 9 people to celebrate a birthday and catch happy hour. We arrived around 2:45pm and waited until 3pm to order since happy hour starts then. The restaurant wasn't very busy at first but did start filling up shortly after. The outdoor seating and R&B music were nice, good vibes. Most of our table ordered from the happy hour menu. I ordered the blue raspberry margarita, a shot of El Jimador, and the mac and cheese balls. Interestingly the food came out before the drinks and we were almost finished eating before the first round of drinks finally arrived. The mac and cheese balls were good but nothing memorable. The blue raspberry margarita looked nice but the flavor was just okay. Others at our table had similar comments about the food, sliders were good but nothing that really stood out. Service was unfortunately the biggest issue. Our server seemed overwhelmed and it was difficult to get their attention throughout the visit. Drinks took a long time both rounds and we had to signal a few times just to get assistance which started to throw off the mood for the table. The biggest surprise came when the bill arrived. The website lists $6 margaritas during happy hour which is one of the reasons we waited until 3pm to order. However the margaritas on our bill were $12. If certain margaritas are excluded from the special that should probably be clarified because it was confusing and felt misleading. With a party our size gratuity was automatically added and the bill ended up being over $400 which made the slow service even more noticeable. The atmosphere and music were nice and the food was decent but the slow service and unclear happy hour pricing made this a disappointing experience for our group. Tip for future guests: If you're going for happy hour drinks it might be worth asking which ones actually qualify before ordering!

Three Pcs Chicken with okra and purple koolaid
Rachel K.

I've visited Fixins a few times now, and each time our experience has been consistent and the food has been delicious. Our latest visit was on a Saturday night, date night with my husband and we put in a reservation ahead of time. I'm glad we did because there were a bunch of people outside waiting for a table. Upon entering they were ready to seat us right away at one of the four top booths- but we spotted a couple open seats at the bar and offered to sit there instead so others could take the big table. Our server/bartender was friendly and we ended up ordering purple koolaid ($5) (their sugar to flavor ratio is perfect). It's a LARGE glass, and probably could be shared. We also ordered the Oxtails ($30) and the three piece fried chicken ($23) to share and knew we'd have leftovers. Their oxtails are fall off the bone and really flavorful in the gravy. The chicken is perfectly crispy and they give you a choice of dark or white meat- we opted for dark because it's more flavorful- and it was cooked perfectly. We both chose okra for our sides, it's not something you see everywhere and Fixins does a great job. The restaurant was busy and buzzing with energy. There is indoor and outdoor seating. If you're looking for something close by while you wait for a table there are great shops like Strapping to pop into. There's also plenty of street parking in the area.

I'm a frequent customer at Fixin's, and every single time my experience has been amazing. I usually order the oxtails, chicken and waffles, and a Kool-Aid (unless I'm grabbing a drink from the bar), and the food is always sooo good--honestly a 10/10 every time. The service is consistently great--super welcoming and friendly, which makes the whole experience even better. I do recommend making a reservation so you can get seated quickly. I love bringing my friends and family here, and they always end up loving it too. The place is super cute, both inside and outside. Definitely one of my go-to spots!

It is a great option for soul food! I enjoy the food there when I go. Today may be an option for me to go there after church services.

Many brunch places do not do those nowadays, which I hate. Every brunch requires a coffee. I appreciate that they do lattes here, rather than just hot or iced coffees. They had some unique syrups, such as bourbon caramel and praline. The syrups were on the more subtle side, which some people prefer. I am not one of those people, but it was a good latte for a breakfast/ brunch spot. I wish there was more ice tho.  The skillet cornbread with sharp cheddar, creamed corn & garlic, honey butter & house made seasonal jam on the side was a great starter dish. I enjoyed the garlic and cheese. The temperature/ toastiness of this was yummy.  We couldn't decide between the cornbread and the sticky bun, so the only obvious solution was to order both.
