The two sides we chose were mac and cheese and red beans and rice. We also ordered the shrimp and grits - i asked for the gravy on the side- but they accidentally put it on there. Im sooooo glad they did, because they know what they're doing . It was so good the way it was. For the side we got greens and it had flavor like a mf! The mac and cheese was ok. Found this restaurant on Yelp, while searching for soul food. I came up from the South Bay for an event & had a craving. Came for the oxtails, but it was close to closing, and they had run out already. A few other items were sold out by that time too. So if you want a full menu to choose from, come early. We ordered the fried catfish with rice & gravy and greens for sides, and the chicken wings with mac & cheese and grits for sides. Everything was spot on deliciousness! Yum!!! Off the beaten path in West Sacramento, you can find this little gem called Colo's Soul Food. At the present there working they are working thier way back from remodeling and covid issues...but, service was good and so was the food. Took my mom out for dinner on a Saturday evening...got in before the storm of folks flew in. The vibe inside was definitely New Orleans jazz club with a restaurant in the back. It was a little under-staffed, but a lot of places are right now as they are recovering. Being pregnant had nothing to do with the quality of food that was served to me. I'm offended that half the people in there are older than me besides the young lady that took my order, and no accountability is being had. Maybe taste buds. But the ribs not being fully cooked and okra being burnt isn't a pregnancy thing. That's what you call a rush job to get the food out quickly because we were sitting a while and you guys didn't start cooking UNTIL it actually was open. Don't use my pregnancy as an exscuse for how poor you guys food was because I was with my mother at the time and she said the same thing I'm just more vocal :). I really hate having to write this review because the staff is really nice and this place has a good ambiance. But those are the only positives that I can give. I stopped by after ordering 4 meals from the Too Good To Go app. When my husband, daughter, and I arrived we were quickly checked in for our orders. My husband saw a few other items on the menu so he ordered some additional sides. I recommend coming early in the day as they tend to run out of the more popular items. As others have stated, there is a long wait time. We waited about 30 minutes for our food to be ready. When we got home we realized the $7 okra my husband ordered was missing from the bag. We had to really season the food in order to eat it! And even then it was a challenge. We ended up giving a lot of it to the dogs. There was just no flavor or the flavor wasn't good. My 12 year old said the yams were the worst shes ever had! At first I thought she was being dramatic until I tried them. They were awful! Same for the chicken and mac and cheese. I would like to think we came on an off night but based on reviews other yelpers have posted I highly doubt it. read more

I googled "soul food restaurants in Sac" and this restaurant came up so me and my friend decided to try it out. My friend had the shrimp and grits, which looked delicious and was a large portion. She said the dish was really good. I had the catfish dinner with cabbage and Mac and cheese. The catfish was cooked to perfection crunchy on the outside but cooked well on the inside but not overcooked. The cabbage was tastefully seasoned not too much salt. The Mac and cheese was cheesy and tasted good. We both had the sweet tea which was not too sweet which I appreciated. The wait staff were very friendly and attentive. When Our order was taking a little longer than expected they graciously gave us some fries on the house for the wait. I thought that was a nice gesture. Before we left the owner came by to apologize to us once again for the wait, she was very nice and told us she is from Baton Rouge (New Orleans decor) and has had her business for more than ten years. Her cooking shows she can really cook. The owner also told me she usually has more selection of sides etc on Friday and Saturday, they had ran out of some sides when we went on a Sunday (yams and peach cobbler) [[HIGHLIGHT]]The restaurant has ample seating and does take out orders.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] You can park in the Grocery Outlet lot and walk over to the restaurant since there is no parking in front of the restaurant. I read reviews from customers for over 8 months. Mainly on tiktoc and Sacramento reviewers on IG. Even though the reviews were mixed we decided to support a black owned business on juneteenth. We waited about 25mins for our food & it was nice and hot! Our 1st mistake was being the 3rd customer there as soon as they opened at 1pm. Their Mac and yams wasn't ready. I was disappointed because most reviews said that it was good. The cashier/waitress & hostesses (all the same person) was SUPER nice and attentive! We chose the 2 meat plate with 2 sides. Deep fried ribs, catfish, rice/gravy and fried okra. My catfish batter fell off almost immediately, the fish smelled like the ocean and wasn't done enough for me. The fish was pretty thin too. The dried fried ribs had zero flavor and the membrane on the ribs wasn't removed. They were tough. The gravy on the rice tasted like gumbo roux, but my husband liked it. The fried okra was the best on the plate. My canned sprite was luke warm, however I was offered a glass with ice. My husband's COORS was ice cold right out the bottle. We were there for roughly a hour and a half and never once were we offered the Mac n cheese nor the yams, but we were given Hawaiian rolls. We had the pleasure of sitting by a first timer like ourselves and she was just as disappointed. She also wanted the mac and yams. She said the cabbage was drenced in vinegar. Flies were on us as if we were eating in the park. Management was super nice and apologetic. Our bill was $40.00, and more than likely we won't return. read more

We used to live on Norwood and would always see this spot whenever we'd drive up to the planet fitness on Watt. We figured we could try it out today and we came in as soon as it opened. Quick tip: park at the grocery store nearby, parking is a little weird in that corner. When we came in, chairs were still up, tables weren't ready but we were greeted immediately and were told what was available at the time. We ordered the smothered chicken with hush and I got the boneless wings bayou heat flavored. We took our seats and waited about 30 minutes or so for the food, and the food looked so good we forgot to snap a pic :p I don't have any issues with how things were getting set up as we were being seated because the host made sure to prioritize us and making sure things were prepped. Not every day will be perfectly set up, but you do what you can to make sure your guests are acknowledged and the orders are in. You will have to order first and pay before receiving the food. Just a heads up! [[HIGHLIGHT]]As far as the environment, yes this place has a looot of personality, and in a good way! Ok so me and my 10 year old son came here, he said he wanted soul food so I found this place, looked promising. No joke we waited an hour to get our food. It was a to go order, so I don't know maybe they treat to go orders a little different than they do dine in orders. I originally came for oxtails but it was sold out along with other items from the menu so I ended up ordering two of the 2 way plates it was supposed to be catfish fillet and shrimp but one plate had snapper instead and being I'm not a snapper fan an was craving catfish I was sad anyways the greens was 10/10 very flavorful and the rice and gray was ok it had a bit of a after taste to it I rate it 5/10 the shrimp was good juicy and flavorful I rate that 7/10 the homemade tatter sauce was magnificent it made the shrimp taste so much better I rate that 10/10.
