Alright, we've all seen the late night commercial about this twisty treat and I'm sure we've thought about going to the local state fair for one when it comes around, but why wait. There is a mobile truck in Socal. I was skeptical at first because they really don't serve meals, just the tornado potato which is really just a side dish. They give you quite a few flavor options like smoky Carolina BBQ or salt and Vinegar or Hawaiian. Sauces are I assume hand made and decent, but what it all comes down to is this dish is far to greasy, far not crisp or hot enough to fry right and unless it has a hot dog in the middle it's a tad pricy for just a potato. I remember when food trucks used to be gourmet, hence the name "gourmet food truck". I'm starting to think roach coach is more appropriate for some of the places I've had in Orange County. read more

Truffle Tornado is the Tornado brushed with White Truffle Oil. Oh, so fancy! The spiral potato is fried to a perfect golden brown. The spirals help give each bite a crispy outer shell with a tender center. The truffle oil is generously brushed on and takes the potato to a whole new level. The taste of truffles is hard to explain if you've never had it before. It reminds me of a little of garlic, but not really. The flavor hits you in different points on your taste buds which keeps them jumping for joy. Thumbs up, way up! Sausage Tornado made with lb Hawaiian Portuguese Sausage. How could I not try this one?! With that said, it was so ONO! The flavor of the Portuguese sausage was right on the money, flavorful, juicy, and again a great snap from the fry process. To me, this is like Shakey's Mojos on a stick, with flavored powder. The idea is great, but I think it's just a little overpriced for mojos. The great thing is that it tastes good (like all potatoes) and they make your order within a couple of minutes. read more

This is a great idea as it is easy to eat on the go. It is really just simply a spiraled potato with some seasoning but the high marks are for 1. They are always perfectly cooked 2. They are cooked quickly, espec. for a food truck 3. The owner is very nice The truffle one was good but not a very strong taste of truffle. The spiral sausage is a meal unto itself (plain ones not filling as an entire meal). Want to try the zucchini one. read more

The line and price is kind of steep for what you get. Is it snackable and umami delicious from the powdered flavoring? Yes. Have I had better potatoes? Yes. Have I had better potatoes in spiral form for optimum for sharing? No. It's not a must have, but when ya need carbs, it fits the bill. read more

My friend and I scooted on down to CSUN for The Big Show feat. The Cataracs and Kreayshawn (shameless plug, sorry) and were blessed to see an array of food trucks. We sat under a tree and watched drunk college kids make fools of themselves eating tacos when a girl caught our eye. She was holding a magnificent object: a hot dog encased in a swirly food, and stuck on a stick. We immediately got in line for the Tornado Potato, not even knowing what we were buying nor how much it costed. It just looked like we needed to consume it immediately. We got a screw driver and a sausage tornado, and damn, that was a good dog. I'm one of those annoyingly pretentious girls who is like "Eh, eh, hot dogs are weird. I only like Dodger Dogs and Hot Dog On A Stick," but I swallowed my pride as I swallowed that polish dog. Though the screw driver was impossible to eat standing up (as you most definitely need knife and fork to utilize chili, cheese, potato, and hot dog in every bite), the regular ol' sausage tornado was easy to eat right off the chopstick. The line we were in was about 30 deep, and once we ordered, there was about a 5 person queue at the pick-up window. After only eating a sausage tornado all day, I quickly returned to the line for a sweet potato tornado, but unfortunately had to leave to catch Kreay Kreay's set. Either way, I will get a sweet potato tornado in the near future to allow myself to nom delicious roots-on-a-stick again. Hot Dog On A Stick was king until Tornado Potato rolled up, and now I can't even picture a hot dog without a potato wrapped around it. In short, don't be stingy. TORNADOO POTATOOO! If the name doesnt catch your eye, then the long twirly/spiral pinecone/hot dog on a stick shape will. Seriously, it does not get any more fun and whimsical than this snack and whoever thought of it is a genius. I've seen this similar food item featured on Guy Fieris Triple D, but it was in some other state that I'd probably never go to. Thank you Tornado Potato for bringing this to the OC for me to try. First saw this truck at the USC football game yesterday and even though I was already stuffed, I knew I had to get it. I ordered the screwdriver-polish dog wrapped with the spiraly potato and drizzled with cheese and chili ($9). YUMM. Thank you to the guy at the window for recommending the polish dog to go with this order because it was seriously so delicious. Only complaint is, they dont give you this dish on a stick. I imagined myself holding one of these bad boys up but oh well, I understand, with all the toppings and all it might be kind of hard. This just means next time Ill have to get a regular one :] ($6). They had some bomb flavors like ranch, sour cream and onion and truffle oil that I definitely want to try. For me, seeing this truck is like the normal kid seeing an ice cream truck-me being more of a savory than sweet person. I guarantee kids and adults will enjoy this and hope this pops up around Irvine. I'm sure this food will spread quickly, as its one of those things that you cant help but stare at when you see someone carrying it and think to yourself, "Man, I have got to try that." read more

Mmm... POTATO ON A STICK! Honestly, it's a simple idea that turned out great. This truck is a family owned business and it's amazing how things turned out. I had a chance to try them out at Venice First Friday. I wanted to try something different since I assumed that if I got the original, it would just tatse like a regular potato. I got the zucchini and sweet tornado which was the sweet potato. Both were amazing, but you had to eat the zucchini fast because of the moisture content or else it will get soggy. It wasn't crispy like the others, but it was still good. The owner offered it to me to eat it with ranch dressing. BOMB! The sweet tornado was good too and a little tougher to chew. It was fully cooked though, I'm guessing it was the starch content of the sweet potato. 4.5 stars, just a little over priced. I still will go back for more. read more

This is cooler in concept than it is in taste. We were at DTLA Art Walk and got a tornado with cheddar and jalapeno seasoning. The seasoning was right on point but the potato itself was overly-cooked so the majority of it was really hard and not as edible/enjoyable as I would have liked. I gave them a try again since I saw a TON of people with their potatoes walking around Granada Hills. All I have to say is... REDEMPTION! It was delicious! Much better and bigger than last time. I guess we got them on an off night before. We tried a potato and a sweet potato and I can't tell you which I preferred. One was salty and savory, the other was sweet, like dessert. I ate here at the Santa Anita Park during some horse race fun. I love betting at the tracks on a nice day. I think I've been to the tracks at least once per year for the past 30 years. Good memories! There were about 40 food trucks. I was looking for a tasty snack. I had a regular tornado potato with salt and vinegar flavoring. What a devious treat! Best of all they had ketchup and hot sauces for me to pour all over the potato. Crispy, salty, and delicious. What a wonderful snack for a lucky day at the track. Experienced them at the OC Fair... I had the sweet potato tornado. The pluses: The truck itself is pretty cool. Good vibe, cool music, tons of people all around. The staff were SUPER nice!!! I couldn't walk 10 feet at the fair without someone asking me what I was holding. It is a pretty cool concept! Huge stick with a potato tornadoed all around it. The minus: Taste! It was pretty tasteless. It fell on the floor, by accident, about 1/4 into it...and I wasn't too depressed. Also, the stick is so big and heavy that it's hard to hold onto. Although, I think you can get the "tornado" cut onto a plate. Overall, I would NOT return to purchase food. I would return for the contagious atmosphere around it and nice people working it. read more

I LOVED it !!!! How creative and unique and the taste definetly did not dissapoint. We tried this truck at a little food truck get together in North Hollywood and I think it was the hit of the event ! I saw people eating it when I walked in and knew I really had to get one. I got the Tornado potato with the sausage in between without the cheese. They have a bunch of sauces and powders to choose from. We did have to wait for a few minutes (okay maybe 7 minutes) but it was definetly worth the wait ! read more

Came across this truck on Main and Ashland oh my goodness. I saw a decent line and the potato (whole potato, spiral cut, deep fried, powdered with flavor of choice and served on a skewer :9 ) , i figured the line is there for a reason and decided to try it. The people running the business were very polite and even talked to me about their food at the service window about how its made and what they use. they told me they use rice oil, which is alot better than canola and is healthier so this made me feel less guilty about eating the fried treat they called my potato to the window, along with a punch card, and wow. i opted for the cheddar chess and it tasted like the best fries ive ever had in my life covered in basically cheeto power... it was crunchy on the outside and soft and piping inside and had me in the line for another immediately. i would definitely recommend anyone who spots this truck to go and try one, youre gonna be filling your punch card out in no time :) read more

This truck's about a month old and I like it. They were here in Miracle Mile around Wilshire and Cloverdale. I think sunny when I see the truck because it has a gradient of red, orange, and yellow. The difference between fries and chips is the cut and depending on where you're from you'll call it one or the other. A Potato Tornado is a whole deep-fried potato that is spirally cut on a skewer. On the truck you see a screen showing how it is made and how it is eaten. It's a fairly simple concept. So you have two choices: The regular is $3.50 and the truffle kind is $4.50; there are a handful of flavors you can have your potato dusted with. I got the truffle potato dusted with the jalapeño flavor, which was a good choice I thought. Drinks are about $1.00. Service is excellent and I was able to speak to the person who seemed to be the owner and I appreciated that he was glad to talk about the product and the business. I seem to be running into fairly new trucks on my random journeys in Los Angeles. There's none like it in the area and from what I've been told it is a street snack in Korea or in many places in Asia. If you're in the mood for a deep fried whole potato, this place is great. However, I think it's too specialized and limited to just one food item with mild variations. Sometimes we're looking for lunch, dinner, or something to eat after the clubs/bars/parties. Personally I like variety. With other foods available, food truck or not, I'd end up buying food and then if I'm in the mood for a deep fried potato, I know this truck'll have it fairly quickly. I wonder how this one would do with deep fried desserts? Or just deep fried anything. Hmm.... 3 out of 5 Stars. Just to be clear, 3 means I'd still visit. read more

It's like a really fresh Pringles potato chip! I was thinking it might be like a mojo potato from Shakey's, but there is not as much mushy potato inside. It's almost like a potato chip. They wrap one long potato string around a stick and hand it to you. It's like a slinky! Everyone was starring at it - I felt like I was holding a trophy. It's cool because you can add your own flavor to it. I had the sour cream and onion flavor which made it taste even more like a fresh Pringles potato chip. They had all other types you could pick from like cajun and ranch. They also have sweet flavors like cinnamon sugar. It's not really a meal - unless you spring (no pun intended) for the Sausage Tornado or the Screw Driver. For those ones, they skewer a sausage and then wrap the potato string around it! It looked ridiculous! If I was hungrier I would have went with one of those. Oh, and they actually have a loud speaker to call your name out, so you don't have to worry about not hearing the guy scream your name. read more

These guys make a spiral whole potato. You can put a spicy Louisiana hot, a Portuguese or an all-beef sausage in the middle, add any number of seasonings and/or chili and nacho cheese. I had a plain with all-beef. I think they deep fry the whole thing. The sausage is tasty. The potato is greasy. It was $8 which is steep considering you can get a decent hot dog and fries elsewhere for a few bucks. Multiple people asked if they had coffee. No, they don't but they do have a berry lemonade for 3 buck fitty. For me this was a try one time thing. Probably won't go back unless they were the only ones around. read more

This is a review for their business, not the food. I've had their potato swirls, and they are very good. BUT THEY HAVE TERRIBLE service! We contacted them to participate in a food truck fundraiser for our Spring Carnival. Checked on their availability almost 2 months before the event, they said they'd be happy to participate. Checked back 2 weeks before the event to confirm they would show, got a verbal confirmation, but they suddenly failed to reply to any e-mails. And then their contact phone number suddenly only went directly to voicemail. Frantic e-mails, calls, and even a Facebook private message resulted in no response. I had a terrible feeling that they were going to be a no show, and I was right. Day of the event, nothing. TOTAL NO SHOW! DO NOT TRUST THEM! read more

Tried this truck at the Lunar New Year Festival at Qualcomm stadium in San Diego. Had the Screwdriver and the Zucchini. Amazing! I was literally blown away. Who ever thought of this food truck is a pure genius because it's something you don't see done to a potato! Screw fries! I'm always gonna order the screwdriver every time they come aroundZ. They had quality served food don't get me wrong, but at the end of the event, they left before we could talk to them and collect the profit we made. We did not expect this problem to happen. Went to my first food truck festival in North Hollywood over the weekend. This was my first truck. It was starting to drizzle, so the line wasn't too long. I ordered the Screw Driver. 7.00 for a 1/2 lb sausage wrapped in an swirly cut fried potato with chili and cheese piled on it. At first I was kind of upset it wasn't on a stick per the menu picture, but after analyzing and plotting out how to eat it, I decided that a stick would have been very, very, very messy. I used the provided fork and knife and cut between the potato rings. It was delicious. Some of the bites I pulled the sausage out of the ring of potato, and some I didn't. It was very tasty. Walking around with a tornado potato is like walking around with the last unicorn known to man, everyone stops to stare and than proceeds to ask what is that and than where can I get one? Well it is a tornado potato, and the one I like is the big bambino of the tornado potatoes. I like getting the wiener one with the potato caressing it while drenched with chili and cheese. It's like a potato had sex with a sausage and got messy with the chili and cheese. It is all my favorite foods compiled on a stick, the only way to eat, you get all the food groups on a stick and I can't complain about that.
