We had a sushi craving so we decided to come here one night. I thought the food here could've had bigger portion for the amount of money they charge. The yellowtail jalapeño was okay; I've had better. I ordered the crab salad, but they were out and tried to substitute it with a lobster salad. I must've a few pieces of lobster and the rest of just salad for over $10.00. The atmosphere was nice and ambient but I probably wouldn't return here again. read more

Three of us had lunch here, and it was fabulous. We started with the rock shrimp tempura and Indian pancake appetizers. Both were beautifully presented and very tasty. Best sushi restaurant that I have been to in a long time! The rolls were fresh and large. You could taste all the ingredients. I would recommend the Sandy Hook roll. The drinks were delicious. I had the Mango Martini and I am not typically a big martini fan but it was gone in no time! The hot and sour seafood soup was incredible! It had huge chunks of seafood and was spicy. The atmosphere was quiet and contemporary so it is a nice place to catch up with friends. There is a hibachi bar upstairs from the main dining hall, which is also nice. Prices were a few dollars above average the sushi was made well. Friendly attentive service. The sushi could use some sauces and extras on top to enhance flavor. Great hibachi, good service. Front desk people can use some dose of friendliness. A prior review stated they showed up (without a reservation mind you) and EXPECTED to be sat in hibachi, make a reservation. They get crowded- because it is good. The show was fun for kids (we were there without kids), and the staff were basically friendly and kept us happy. It was noisy, but that is hibachi. Sushi was great, as usual. Dumplings can be hit and miss, but usually are great. Same with Szechuan dumplings. To the point of others, it is not as good as it used to be, but what is? read more

I know this place is popular but we were really disappointed. We got a mixture of Chinese and sushi take out and needless to say we were so mad we wasted $60 on food that we didn't like and didn't even finish because it was just not good. The beef negimaki tasted old and over cooked. It was a small portion for $10 too. The food is not worth their higher prices. We will definitely not be going back. Tonight was my 3rd time eating at Toro... and I'm very disappointed. I am a big fan of uni sushi...and will order it whenever available. Those that know uni, also know that it can turn quickly... from a delicious, creamy delicacy to a pretty foul, ammonia tasting mess. It's all about how fresh it is and how it is stored. I have eaten at many sushi restaurants... including some very high end NYC restaurants (like Nobu, sushi of Gary, Sushi Nakazawa, etc) My first visit with Toro, they had no uni... which is acceptable. I'd rather have no uni than bad uni... the 2nd visit they did have uni and it was perfect. Tonight the uni was past the point of no return. It should not have been served. I pointed this out to my waiter (whose service was top notch) who left the 2nd piece of uni on my plate and advised the management. An older man, who I assume is in charge of the uni, basically argued with me from 15 feet away (he was behind the sushi bar and I was seated at a table) that the uni was fresh.... causing an embarrassing scene. SO, not only was the uni past its prime, the management was inappropriate and rude. Any restaurant of quality would have simply apologized and removed the uni from the bill... and would not argue with a customer across the entire restaurant. Needless to say, we will not be returning to Toro any time soon... and I thought I found a new, local spot... read more

Always liked this place, however, we placed an order yesterday, and they hung up on us before we were finished. I tried calling back and go a busy signal for about 10 or 15 minutes and when I got through finally they told me the order had already left for delivery. I have been to Toro many times and although their food is pretty good, when you order takeout you get the same EXTREMELY rude and disrespectful lady on the phone every single time. Will not be returning again especially for takeout. This was our favorite restaurant too, a shame. read more

Worst experience ever at Toro of Newtown. They poured Sake into my 8 year old's mouth and then went down the line to a second child who basically threw it up at the table. Thankfully my son did not to swallow. Then the kids got raw chicken! The owner never came upstairs to apologize, instead they were trying to keep us and the other family from making a scene. We have come here many times before. This was our last. We definitely gave them a piece of our minds. They had the audacity to tell us "he's new". Furthermore, they were trying to keep us from speaking up because they comped our dinner. Great job Toro. We won't be back and telling us the hibachi cook is new is not an excuse to give kids who are less than 10 years old alcohol!! I should be clear to state that when they usually ask who wants Sake and the kids speak up, they give them soda. When my kid spoke up, he got Sake. Everyone who spoke up at the table got Sake and it took the adults a moment to realize what was going on. It just so happened that most of the adults didn't want any otherwise we would have caught on immediately. And I felt really bad for the other family as they were celebrating birthdays! Another bad Chinese place pretending to be fusion. I guess that's what the sushi guys are there for. The ambiance is very nice but the pleasantries by the staff feels forced. Awww...I love Toro. If it wasn't for Toro (and Carminucio's) we would never have anywhere to dine out in Newtown. We've lived here since August of 2008 and Toro was the first restaurant we tried. We've enjoyed the pad thai, hot and sour soup, and fried rice. I really like their sweet and sour chicken. As far as the sushi rolls go, we've never ordered a roll we didn't like. We recently sat at the sushi bar for the first time and were pleasantly surprised to get a free appetizer just for customers at the bar. It was some sort of fried fish with a spicy sauce...yum. Do they do that all the time? Not sure. That was a random Wednesday night. But I do know we'll definitely sit at the sushi bar again! read more

Pretty sure I already reviewed Toro but after my last experience I had to come back and reiterate my obsession. Their sushi is hands down the best. The basic rolls are delicious and the fancy rolls are incredible. The blue crab fancy roll is the best sushi roll I have ever eaten. The restaurant is big so it can accommodate large crowds as well as big parties. The service is friendly as well. Definitely worth going! read more

The Japanese side of the menu remains tasty. The Chinese side all tastes the same no matter what one orders. Ask for extra heat and it doesn't change anything. The chicken appears deep fried rather than stir fried. Too much grease! Not really very clean either...time for a redo. read more

This restaurant has probably the worst customer service I've ever seen. Me and my friend went to enjoy a nice hibachi meal and once we got there we told the lady at the front desk 2 people for hibachi. She proceeded to roll her eyes at us and talk in Chinese to the other worker, acting as if we weren't even there. Then, the other worker tried to persuade us into a regular dining sitting area, but we came for hibachi and we wanted hibachi. We didn't drive 30 minutes to not get hibachi. So once we told the worker we wanted hibachi she rolled her eyes again and slammed down the menu. It was something I've never seen before.
