We got pickup on Christmas Eve. My family and I got some appetizers and entrees from different cuisines that Toro specializes in. The appetizers were underwhelming to say the least. The Indian pancake was excessively greasy and the sesame noodles needed a thicker sauce. Also, the Thai style entrees, tofu Thai coconut curry and the tofu spicy red mango sauce entrees seemed as if the sauces of both were watered down. Both entrees were bland and disappointing! I expected more from Toro given the popularity, but it's not worth your money, at least for takeout. read more

Good food, but rude staff. I called last week to place a large order for takeout and was told delivery is not an option when the address I was at had previously had delivery from there. After I finished saying a single item from the order, the woman speaking told me the total and tried to rush me off the phone. Tonight was super disappointing. Toro doesn't typically let us down, but the past few trips to Toro haven't been up to standard at all! Not sure if they lost a chef or two but this is sad... this was my next door sushi joint but now there is only one sushi place left within 30miles now - daiko in west haven alone for is now! The spicy mayo is more like only mayo... no spice... The Thai coconut curry was so bland... and please please choose a better selection of veggies for your curries... Even the seaweed salad tonight needed salt... ‍ For 72 bucks I'm still finding myself having to cook dinner tonight Hopefully this is just an off 4 trips but I'm not sure I'll be back to find out for a fifth... Brought the wrong drinks, very hard to get there attention. The waitress slammed the soup down on the table as she walked by. It seemed like we were an inconvenience to her. Not a Happy New Year at Toro, they were very unprepared for this New Year's Eve. We were there for a hibachi dinner with friends. We had 8 o'clock reservations and were not seated until 8:45. They did not start to prepare our food until 9:30. The hibachi area was freezing, one of the waiters said he thinks their heating system froze. It would have been nice to know that before seating us in a freezer to eat dinner. The chef was visibly exhausted and made it clear he was happy we were his last dinner after his ten hour shift. This is my favorite Asian cuisine restaurant. It by far blows every other location I have been to out of the water. They always have fresh meats, fish, and vegetables. Their sauces are on point and are rich and full of flavor. It is one place that I always have a clean plate club, and if I don't, it's because we ordered too much delicious food to fit it all in our tummies. Good sushi but not the best around. The special rolls follow too much of the same recipe mixes and the most interesting ones only apply for those interested in crab or lobster based rolls. Our first time there the sushi nigiri was excellent but it seems to have waned. Poor cuts and a bit sloppy, had an over fried shrimp tempura another time as well. At dinner here on 9/6/11 at about 7pm, experienced very unfriendly staff. Ordered House Fried Rice which lacked flavor but was very greasy, another one of us ordered a seafood dish that was scallops, shrimp and lobster. The scallops were very fishy, the lobster was tough and chewy. The egg drop soup had corn in it so it just tasted like corn soup. I definitely would NOT recommend it, nor will I be back. read more

We tried the hibachi last Saturday evening to finish off my son's birthday week. Overall had steak, chicken, scallops, and shrimp. Paired with the usual pasta, rice, and vegetables. The kids have seafood allergies and the hibachi chef was very good about separating the seafood items. The performance was entertaining and the food was high quality. The taste could be better though so maybe it's time to add some zest to those spices! The hibachi restaurant is upstairs which is an excellent idea for both aestethic and practical reasons. The lighting and decor are sophisticated and relaxing. The staff very friendly and accommodating to our kids. The food was 3 stars but 4 stars were earned for the overall family friendly experience. Went on Christmas Eve. The place was very busy so service was a bit slow but felt like they were trying hard. We were at the Hibachi. Our chef was really good and so funny. He interacted with the kids well and they had a great time. The food was outstanding (steak, shrimp, scallops and chicken) the portions are nuts. We took home a lot but left a lot too. Went to Toro for lunch today and walked out due to cleanliness. We were seated at a table that felt sticky as soon as we sat down. The menus were also dirty. We ordered two hot teas. One mug was clean, and the other mug was clearly dirty. I asked for a new tea when the waitress came to take our order. She promptly returned to the table with my new mug of tea. This time the mug that she brought me had bright pink lipstick imprinted in the rim. It didn't look as if even an attempt was made to wash it as you could see every detail of the lip print on the mug. While every restaurant should maintain the utmost cleanliness it's especially concerning that a sushi place would have such a blatant disregard for cleanliness. We will never return. read more

Finally had a chance to sit down for dinner here after having some takeout a while ago. We had a group of 4 and sat downstairs, which is the non-hibachi section. Some of our group are sushi lovers and some not, the special roll was so tasty that even the sushi novices raved about it. My wife had pad thai and I had the sushi deluxe. The sushi was very fresh but nothing too adventurous or fancy, good just the same. The hot food was way above your average Chinese takeout but the menu featured many takeout favorites. Next time I am in the mood for fried rice and shrimp in lobster sauce I will have to make the trip. Service was fast and friendly, mixed drinks that others in my party ordered were very good. We have a new favorite, and it's Toro. We checked it out last year based on the solid Yelp reviews, and liked it so much we went back. Repeatedly. I'm always wary whenever an Asian place tries to do Chinese and Japanese, but they do a great job of both. We're kind of Chinese food snobs (is that possible?) and usually don't bother unless we're in Queens, but Toro's got their Chinese food down. As for the Japanese, where do I begin? Their sushi/sashimi is incredibly fresh (with a minor exception on occasion) and they have some really inventive rolls. We finally sat at the sushi bar the last time we went, and the chefs proceeded to put plate after plate of mouth-watering sushi in front of us. I think we frightened a few small children by how geeked out we were over the fish. Finally, the service is great - all the servers are very attentive (if busy), and the owner (manager?) is always friendly and talkative. read more

Plain and simple: this place has delicious food! They have the BEST crab ragoon and fresh and delicious sushi. Even though I have had their food multiple times, I have never eaten in the restaurant and have only ordered take out. Toro is about a 5 minute drive from my house so I prefer to order take out and bring it home. However, the inside of the restaurant seems clean and the staff is usually inviting. More about the food Every time my fiance and I have ordered from Toro, it's a short pick up wait (15 minutes tops). We usually only sushi/sashimi (and of course the delicious crab ragoon). My favorite is the Tekka Don, which is 15 or 20 pieces of tuna sashimi served with rice and a salad or soup. My fiance loves their rolls... I think he's had all of them by now. I can't remember his favorite but I do know that he's never had one that he didn't like. I find Toro a little expensive for some things. However, they definitely make up for it with their top notch, fresh fish. So - if you're looking for some delicious sushi/sashimi, go to Toro. I know it's surprising, but seriously! Go! I love getting sushi here. The basic rolls are my ideal version of what a roll should be - the tuna avocado, for example, had a perfect ratio of fresh tuna and creamy avocado with a nice thin layer of rice. The fancier rolls are pricey but worth every penny - they are so satisfying and the flavors are always unique. Somewhere between the noodles, the giant volcano flames, and complimentary sake being squirted into everyone's mouth, I realized this was WAY more fun than any hibachi restaurant I had ever been to. The veggie dumplings, while not bad on flavor were a bit too doughy for me, but everything else was quite good. It took awhile to get our food which was weird because when we got there there was only one other table being occupied. Aside from that everything was fine. When our meals arrived, all were crispy, as they should be and hot, temperature wise. My husband and I ordered extra spicy, which as usual didn't really happen. I'm convinced that restaurant owners and chefs have become wary of the Connecticut 'palate' and are very cautious about serving something that is actually fiery spicy. Bring it on!.. Located a stone`s throw from the Caraluzzi`s supermarket in Newtown is this Asian restaurant. You and your party can eat sushi, Chinese or opt for the Hibachi. It seems to get crowded on typical dine-out days like Friday and Saturday, but is a little more mellow on other days. The decor is nice, a bit modern, tastefully done. For the food, I have only ordered sushi, sushi rolls too and have always been pleased with the quality of the ingredients. They don`t skimp on the pieces of fish in rolls, which is nice. Have had sushi several times here in the past and found it excellent. We got a ton a stuff tonight a found much of it lacking. Fish was excellent, but prep was pretty bad. Rolls were falling apart sloppy and loose. The spicy tuna and salmon, which in the past contained actual chunks of fish were the mystery meat paste you often see elsewhere. The eel was perfectly prepped and gorgeous, so a positive. Service was pretty bad. We were rushed and then ignored with empty waters most of the meal. As a visiting food snob I want to take my belt off to Toro. I say that because WOW I left there feeling so completely satiated with the yummmmmmmy goodness that I ate. Here's the run down: Indian Pancake-a special----delicious creamy semi-spicy sauce with chucks of potato in it, yum---no wheat so gluten free cousin could enjoy it too. Scallion Pancakes-always a crowd pleaser especially with relatives that are on "diets" who are celebrating and this is where they use there extra "points." Mixed Vegetables in garlic sauce-vitamins with tasty sauce, gosh I love fresh veggies. I ate a Spicy Crispy Tuna Roll and a Spicy Tuna Roll, as a sushi novice I tend to get what I know I like and this did not dissapoint. Again YUM. I know I am getting redundant and I don't care cause this place is YUUUUMMMMMMY!!!! We brought our own birthday cake because I like me some Carvel Ice Cream cake and they didn't even charge us a cake plating fee---that was cool! This is a review of a recent takeaway order. Phoned in to submit the order, the staff person was quite rude and lacked the patience to proceed (one of the key purposes of running a business is to generate revenue, what is the point of being impolite and reluctant to enter the order?). Ordered a good number of items and overall felt highly unsatisfied. Steamed white rice and steamed brown rice had a sulphuric odor akin to being left in a closet congested with mothballs. The "udon" noodles had a stench of a toxic chemical preservative and the "chicken" seemed to be cut up tenders with a bit of sweet brown sauce. Total fail, please do yourself a favor and pursue "Asian fare" elsewhere. read more

I have been to this restaurant a few times over the past couple of months to meet friends and also celebrate special events. I've always had a great time here! Jose is an awesome chef and has a great personality (unlike some at other hibachi places I've been to) The waiter, Greg, is awesome as well! He's very friendly, provides great service, and goes the extra mile to make the experience that much more memorable. It's very rare to find service like that these days and It is very appreciated . I was super excited the first time I tried Toro, especially since I've enjoyed my experience at Mannen their affiliated Ridgefield location. But it just did not live up to my expectations. The staff was unattentive (water unfilled, paid more attention to their "favorite" tables or something) and a lot of the sushi specials are "tempura" or "crunchy" a trick that pretty much helps them skimp on the seafood. We did not get drinks, but maybe that would have helped with the taste? The only good part of the meal was the Indian Pancake which was really good (thus the two stars instead of one). The second time I tried Toro, I did take-out. I ordered the Shrimp in garlic sauce (the flavors fell completely flat). My co-worker got a sushi lunch and she had a strong feeling that the fish was not fresh..confirmed later on. Unsatisfied and quite upset to have spent what we did on unfilling portions, we ended up grabbing a couple of slices of pizza from Carmunicco's. UGH. stick to Mannen their Ridgefield location. Or Sake in Southbury if you want a closer Japanese restaurant. Or New Wok and Dynasty for affordable AND tasty Chinese food. read more

Usually get dinner to go and it is always fresh and hot, cooked nicely and tasty too. We typically order off the standard Chinese fare. Went for the Kung Pao shrimp and got nice fat shrimp that were not covered in grease, which was great. Prices are a little high for take-out, but that doesn't stop us. Portion sizes are good that we can order 3 entrees for 4 people and have leftovers for lunch. read more
