I was SUPER surprised to see Toro made the list of best restaurants for 2019 in CT magazine last week. I hadn't been here in years, but wanted to meet up with some family and wanted to go to a nice, sit-down Chinese place. A friend reminded me that Toro was in this area and thought it would be a great meeting point. Our waiter was eh. He was quiet and a didn't come back very often. The music in the background went from unedited rap to opera (strange, to say the least, for a family place at lunch time). My husband and I ordered green tea and my mug came with a nice ol' lipstick stain on the rim. Great. Rather than ordering one larger lunchtime dish (and sadly, no lunch menu on the weekends, but that's pretty typical of most Chinese places) I opted to go with a few smaller things - wonton soup, steamed dumplings, and an egg roll. Wonton soup was lukewarm. Flavors were good..but I would expect very hot soup, not lukewarm. Dumplings were actually larger than I thought, hot, and tasted very good. Egg roll was also good, very standard like you'd get from any take out place. In the afternoon, my husband didn't feel great and I had the beautiful experience of feeling a little nauseated throughout the evening and throwing up at 1 AM. Definitely subpar experience all around and that last bit was just the icing on top. Would not return to this place. read more

Unfortunately... we should have just left when we received murky brown Mai Tai's. The sushi was good, the noodles were not. The mushroom soup was funky. The Hibachi chief had great energy. This place was recommended to me when my favorite sit-down Chinese restaurant closed. I was looking for a little higher end place (compared to a walk-in style Chinese restaurant). While I don't order take often, during covid, when dining in wasn't permitted or, for me, was still too risky, I tried to order take-out more than usual to support local businesses. I was first put off by how outwardly grouchy the woman at the counter was when I picked up the order. I hadn't asked for special service or extra sauce or anything-there was no reason for her to act anything more than neutral. I picked up the order around 1:30 on a weekend, just after the lunch rush and there were no other customers there, and no bagged up orders waiting for pick up. I'm the peak of covid, I expected a bit of gratitude or pleasantries for my business, but there wasn't a hello or a thank you. The food was not great. The meats were all cooked through, but the seasoning was sparce-mostly oil. For the location, price and recommendation from my friend, I was expecting a whole lot more. It was bad enough that we didn't finish our servings and threw out the leftovers. It just was not tasty or craveable. I'm not sure how this place is still in business. read more

Two stars is probably generous. I see from the other reviews people either like it or dislike it. Im on the dislike side. Im going to give them a try for Hibachi since I know a reservation is needed. The first few seconds we were in Toro we got a bad impression. Asking everyone if they had a reservation then hemming and hawing about everyone who said No. So we went with a table. My fiancé always orders Budweiser and did this time also. The waitress brings a Bud Light which he gets headaches from so he had to tell her No - Budweiser she acted annoyed. Next we ordered their asian style calamari. It was different extremely thin almost like they spiraled it? My fiancé ordered the filet stir fry which was a small portion but good. We ended up sharing his food because mine was gross. I gave the roast pork ramen a try. The menu had no description. If I had known it had smelly seaweed I would have asked for it without. It smelled so bad I could not eat the rest after a few bites literally. My fiancé attempted eating it but couldnt either and he literally has an iron stomach. This place is usually so much better! We went here in a big group and its safe to say we were all disappointed... The food was just ok, very bland, and definitely could have been better. The service was slow and the entre soup had RICE IN IT!! Some pieces of the chicken was close to raw! The noodles were flavorless and yet somehow had to much sauce. The rice was bland and burnt. There was LITTERAL CHARCHOL in the rice. The portions were uneven and some got a lot of the rice and some got a little. The three sauces your typically get, Nadda the dishes were stacked up in front of my friend the whole time. We literally had to remind the chef to squirt the water in to our mouths. And then came the veggie toss. Again we had to remind the chef to do it. He cleaned the grill before he even threw the veggies. Some people got one turn to catch some people got five. It wasn't even just me thinking this it was my whole group. The next weekend some of my others friends went and basically said the same exact thing. It is usually so much better. We tried take out to support our local restaurants today and even though we've never had much luck with Toro we were in the mood for Chinese so decided to give it one more try Once again our order was incorrect despite being emphatic about no egg in the vegetable lo mien it had eggs in the dish so could not eat it and when I called them they did not attempt to make it right read more

Sushi is incredible rivals that of Japan ask for AA and you will get an amazing Chinese lettuce dish sauté with garlic and a light soy sauce. read more

Our first time here - dinner with great friends. Started with the wonton soup and then chicken with spicy mango sauce - yum! Also tried some sushi from my wife's plate - equally yum! The best part was the food came out tasty and hot - and we were able to relax and "conversate" over tea. Looking forward to coming back and try the hibachi upstairs. read more

Sat at a hibachi table with my family of 5 and another group of 4 was seated with us. They promptly took our order and expediently delivered the drinks and then VERY quickly served both the soup and salad that comes with the hibachi meals. We then waited 25-30 minutes for the chef to show up and only 5 min prior to that informed by the waiter that they were "short staffed with only 2 chefs for 6 hibachi tables" and they apologized for the wait. The amount of food brought out was paltry and clearly not close to enough to properly serve 9 adults paying for full meals. The chef forgot to portion rice for the last person and refused to make more when asked if he could. The portions served were minuscule compared to what my family has consistently had in the past and we all left feeling less than full. It was clear that the prep done in back of the house for the chef was not correct, however, after privately bringing this to the attention of the waiter, he boldly approached the entire table and asked "what went wrong here?". His demeanor was unapologetic, rude, and he took no initiative or responsibility for the dissatisfaction that not only we but others at the table had conveyed. While the rest of my family had previously been to Toro multiple times, this was my first and I am confident that has been our last. Disappointed in their customer service and quality. Don't waste your time- this juice ain't worth the squeeze. read more

Ordered here twice already. Still is just basic and boring. The mooshoo pork is 90% cabbage. The egg rolls are tiny like spring rolls. And their chicken and broccoli doesn't really have much sauce and flavoring. Most likely won't order again. read more

ordered spicy chicken with peanuts - one would think that's hard to screw up, but apparently it's not that hard: there was no spice/taste to the dish, lousy breaded chicken pieces, some vegetables, and no sauce at all. The dish was supposed to be spicy. It tasted like yesterdays leftovers. It was horrible. The worst dish ever from this restaurant. This is the second time I have been to Toro! I'm new to the area and my friend and I went the first time and I loved it! I thought the food and service was great! When we came back this time for lunch, my friend was skeptical about what to get but choose the salmon entree. It came with broccoli and a sweet potato purée. It looked fantastic! While my friend was eating her food, she stopped and there was something on her chopstick. It was this tiny little worm. Both of us told the server and she went back and told the chef. She came back to the table and told us, "the chef said it was from the organic broccoli!" Ok, we get the whole organic broccoli thing but at the same time; they should be cleaning their food thoroughly and it really grossed us both out! You could see that we were not happy about it and they only gave us 15% off our bill! They should of taken off my friends entree completely! I had to write this review because the restaurant needs to know it's just not right to have someone pay for their entree after they found something in it that would make a person feel grossed out! It's the same feeling as finding a hair in your food. This completely ruined our experience here and unfortunately will not be back anytime soon! read more

Excellent food, great service, clean hip decor, plenty of parking. Lots of vegetarian options. This has become my favorite local spot for Chinese food (sort of local, I live over in Sherman, it's worth the drive!) - the vegetables are always super fresh and cooked perfectly, the sauces are delicious, and many (if not most) can be made vegetarian-friendly. Sushi always is fresh and great too (I've only eaten the veggie sushi, but my family has had the fish and raves about it!). My aunt also really likes their soups and other dishes, she eats meat and says everything she's tried is amazing. read more

I was very much looking forward to trying this place. However, I was a bit disappointed overall given the price. I wanted to try the Omakase (chef's selection) sushi. There were 3 price points- $40, $50, and $60, however no explanation at all as to the difference. When I asked what the difference between the three options, the waiter seemed clueless. I decided to just order the middle ($50) option. Two appetizers came out which were both quite good. Then the sushi came out- unfortunately nobody told me what was what (not a deal breaker, but would have been nice to know). The dealbreaker was that 3 pieces were literally still frozen in the center. I would expect this out of a cheap hole in the wall place, but not when you are charging $50. It seems that there are quite a few negative reviews for this place with numerous instances of them "dropping the ball". I get it that mistakes happen, but it seems it is just happening too frequently here-- I am in no rush to go back. read more

Yes I am giving one star. This place used to be AMAZING. Now, their food sucks! It's soggy, no flavor, rushed. Just gross. Lori, the woman who answers the phone and does take out, is the worst person you could put to be dealing with the public. She's nasty, rude and just all around unpleasant. I had been avoiding Toro, but when they won "Best Sushi" in the area I had to check them out. Expecting the worst yet again, I was blown away by the plates I was given. Toro is actually pretty good. The cuts are small and the prices are slightly higher than competitors, but they're pulling out fresh fish and presenting wonderful plates and that is something I really respect. The flavor palate is good, though sometimes they'll give you a shrimp instead of fish sushi on the lunch plate and not dress it up as fancy as the one in my picture. The issues I have with Toro are pretty simple. The staff rushes you out, but other reviews already cover that. The website doesn't work and redirects you to the IRS, which is very weird. There are two Yelp pages which should probably be merged or corrected. Minor things when compared to just how good the meals have been, but worth noting regardless. read more

My friends and I visited Toro in Newtown, CT to celebrate a birthday at 7:30pm on a Friday night. Toro presents a nice decor, friendly staff, and good food. We had reservations, so being seated was not a problem. I ordered the steak and shrimp hibachi, which was served with soup, salad, rice, noodles, and vegetables. The food was delicious and it was very entertaining to watch our meal being prepared. All in all, I had a very nice evening at Toro.
