I have mixed feelings on Tortilla Flats. On one hand it had terrific food, on the other hand the overall vibe was horrible! Right off the busy Cerrillos Rd in Santa Fe there are certainly plenty of New Mexican restaurants to choose from. I must say the yelp reviews coupled with the location lead us here. Now, right off the bat for as large as the restaurant is the parking lot is downright tiny! It is right near a light, so it is easy to get in and out however. The hostess and the guy who took our drink order were some of the unhappiest people in Santa Fe - scowls and blah. Our server was better, but he was slow and seemed like he had too many tables. Then there were the patrons of the restaurant - wow, some of the worst! Screaming babies, people screaming into cell phones, people using speaker phones at the table, people watching videos at the table and just general grumpy loud people. This alone would just steer me away from this place again. Not to mention the margs we ordered were slow to come out, watered down and expensive for what we got! Now, the one thing that was great was the food! We started withe the El Papa Nachos (fried crispy potatoes, cheese, bacon and a side of jalapenos). These were so great I think you could make a meal of them! They were sort of a Mexican cheese fries. Next up for me were the chile rellenos with pasole and beans with green chile. The verdict - hot and delicious.. They were cheese and crisp without being greasy! A feat sometimes when dealing with rellenos. The posole on the side was a nice change from boring rice too. Some conflicting Yelp reviews almost led me elsewhere, but Tortilla Flats was too close to my hotel. Glad I came - count me among their supporters. Something you don't find in a lot of places in this country: Mexican/Tex-Mex/Southwestern (however you want to generalize) food with a good beer selection. With all due respects to The Most Interesting Man Alive, Dos Equis no longer suits my tastes, although it will do in a pinch. So, Yay! for New Mexico! Tortilla Flats had Santa Fe Black IPA on tap so that was an obvious choice. I do like their black. Food was not as easy a choice. I pass through New Mexico about every year - sometimes more often - and always like to sample the green chile dishes and the enchiladas. Tortilla Flats may not have the cutting edge NM cuisine, but there was more choices than I can eat in a sitting. In the end, I chose three small dishes: a great green chili, a solid brisket soft taco and a cheese enchilada with red sauce. This is based on service. Today 2/23/24 I placed a pick up order because I was sick and my husband knows I love the tortilla soup from there and offered to be the pick up person if that's what I'd eat for dinner. I ordered him a plate as well. He got there and only my soup was ready. They didn't offer him to remake or to make the plate. They didn't offer him an alternative so he'd have food as well and less of an extra wait. It was more of well, you're outta luck attitude. The ticket clearly showed my info, the time I placed my order and that we'd ordered the ribs plate with certain sides. They didn't bother to check if it was waiting in the kitchen. Their food is ok. The salsa is really good but otherwise the dinner entrees are just ok. They have some of the worst service of any restaurant I've ever been to. Rude servers and managers. The worst waiter is a relative of the worst manager, apparently. Once I saw a waitress leave the bathroom without washing her hands, and when I told the manager he said she probably washed her hands in the back. That was disgusting enough. You have to look at the menu and decide what you want before you go in. Once you go inside, you order at their front desk and then sit down at a table. The seats were not sanitized and there were crumbs all over it. Our food came rather quickly, but it was kind of messy. My mom's enchiladas and green chile and cheese dripping all over the plate. The chile was too spicy for her, she could barely eat it. The Posole was not how i expected. I thought it was going to be a posole stew type of thing, but it was like corn on the side. I ordered the Tortilla Flats Breakfast Special without the chile. It was big and I got bored of eating so I didn't finish. My dad ordered the Frito Pie and was satisfied. This place has the BEST sapodillas. We got sopapillas on the side with our meal and then ordered the stuffed sopapilla with ice cream and strawberries, we did it without chocolate. An absolute embarrassment to New Mexican cuisine! I was born and raised in Santa Fe and have experienced a steady decline in the traditional ingredients that made our food something special to be sought out. The "red chile" tasted like enchilada sauce out of a can and the green had absolutely no flavor or spice (it was green in color though). The gentlemen who was serving drinks was nice, but we still had one drink with debris from something. Looked like lint in the sprite. They replaced this right away. Being the good little yelper I am, after a friend recommended Tortilla Flats to me, I checked out the reviews before hand, and despite some negative reviews that concerned me I decided to give it a shot, and hey, I'm really glad I did! The negative reviews that talked about the portions being small: NO idea what they were talking about. I got lunch and dinner out of my meal. There were some complaints about cleanliness as well, and it seemed fine in that respect to me too. We got stuffed sopapillas because that's what our friend said their strong suit was and they were really good! I got the bean and chorizo which was very filling. The chicken and potato that my husband got I think was even better. Green chili sauce was nice and spicy. Red was milder, but still had good flavor. Love the normal sopapillas that just come with it - very fresh (and hot) and light and airy. Yum! Also they brought us a a big old basket of chips and salsa. Chips were decent, salsa was also decent (not the best I've ever had, but down right acceptable and delicious). Like, I said we were VERY full, and thought it was very affordable for the amount of food. The batter was delicate and not too cakey, with a crisp outer shell and a tender chile inside. The green Chile that smothered my Relleno and my husbands plate was pretty spicy and super flavorful. My husband ordered the breakfast special which was a good portion and he loved Every bite. Today Tortilla Flats had 30 cent pancakes and they were fluffy and really Yummy. The food is good, a little pricey. We have been there several times, each time they sit , and cramp the people like cattle. They close one side of the restaurant and only leave one side open, they say due to staffing. There was a graduation party going on with a party of about 25 - 30 people. It was riduclasly crowed and loud. We asked to be seated in another station where it was not so crowded, the owner said no, he was waiting for another graduation party. We were there about 45 minutes, no other graduation party showed up, and other people were being seated in the area we asked if we could move to. The cramped lunch area is always a problem. Day two of my road trip: Got into Santa Fe, NM late as I decided to see Arizona's National Petrified Forest (it's what Holbrook, AZ is famous for). Little did I know that it was 27 miles long with a 35 mph speed limit with lots of stops. I checked into my Quality Inn Motel from hell where I got the last parking space in town. So, needless to say, I wasn't going to move my car and wasn't going to dine on the vending machine, so I walked up Cerrillo Road to see what I could find. My choices within walking distance were, crossing a six lane highway under construction with NASCAR wannabes flying by (I kid you not, there an accident occurred while I was standing there), or on my side of the street, Taco Bell or Tortilla Flats. I chose the latter. I sat at the bar and asked for a Cadillac Margarita. The bartender grabbed a paper and pen then asked me what goes into my requested drink. I Googled it on my Droid for her. My second drink was a glass of wine. For dinner I ordered the Green Chili Chops: Two center cut Pork Chops smothered with Green Chile and topped with grilled Tomatoes and Onions. Not just a green chili sauce but a thick meaty salsa with the best grill I've ever experienced on tomatoes. And the chops were juicy tender; I could internally hear the swish/squish in my mouth as I chewed em up. For sides I got the calavacitas (squash with cheese, etc) and beans. We started with an order of queso con chile and the plate was huge! It was delicious. I told my niece it was so good I could drink it. Because my niece is not a big fan of chile in general the waitress was able to tell her which one would be hotter that day.
