My first and only impression of TRG2 was not good. My sister and I both ordered a chile relleno platter. To our surprise, the chiles were served "dry" without any sauce on them. Traditionally (in Mexico) they are served with ranchera sauce, a simple tomato sauce seasoned with onions and garlic. Also, the seeds inside the chiles were not removed, which they typically are. The rice was okay, but the beans were not refried. The corn tortillas were also okay, but I've had better. In short, we will not be back. We were looking for a place that prepared food the way we used to get it when we lived in Mexico, and we were very disappointed. We decided to make tacos one night and wanted some fresh, homemade tortillas so we stopped in here after seeing it in passing. The girl working the counter was friendly and helpful as we had several questions. We picked up a pack of corn tortillas as well as an order of rice and some of their red salsa. Money is not a issue but it's more convenient to know there prices. Then I order Menudo and they only sell that on the weekends which should say on the menu on the wall. Then I order 3 different types of meat for gorditas and tacos and they don't have it, which is disappointing. So I order breakfast tacos, 3 out of 10 nothing special. Now this is good stuff. Is it as good as the original downtown, I have to go back and check as it has been a few months (how is that for an excuse). This is more of a restaurant setting than the one on downtown, but still only has about 8 tables. I had two tacos for breakfast; egg and chorizo and a potato, bacon and cheese, both on corn tortillas. A few minutes later l had a Barbacoa de Lingua on corn and called it lunch. OK, at least that was my excuse. They do not have Barbacoa Hogs Heads. That is really sad that the city has sunk to not letting places serve that. Those days may be gone, but not forgotten. Make no mistake, this is still a blue collar workers' place where where crews get a load of tacos so there may be a wait as they are made to order. I came in about 8:45 AM and there was zero line. While I was there, only one other gringo came in for an order. All the rest were locals for the area and foremen picking up orders. Is this a date place? I would say absolutely. The lovely Lady of the house would say no. However, I sure was eyeing that 1 lb Barbacoa de Lingua plate listed on the small menu. Food is AUTHENTIC, inexpensive and delicious. The food reminds me of places I miss in Mexico. I really liked the ground beef enchiladas with red sauce as the tortillas were fresh and the sauce very traditional. I am a sauce girl and would order extra sauce next time. Chicken enchiladas with green sauce were good too. I will be back. Tacos and Gorditas looked delicious as the place was closing 7pm Friday night many patrons were chowing down on these tacos catching my eye. Beans and chips were insanely good too. I had some time to kill on a Friday afternoon so I decided to search for a car wash. Google maps suggested one, so I let my navigator guide me as usual. *cue tires screeching* ---a tortilleria??! I quickly made a detour and parked. The primal hunger I felt after not having breakfast that day kicked in immediately. I jumped out of the car, went in, glanced at the simple menu board (nicely placed, easy to read,..prices clearly marked). The nice lady at the counter took my order: One picadillo on corn and one carne guisada on flour. Cilantro and onion on the side, (cuz I'm a G). One strawberry Jarritos. Because...why not?? I then paid. Waited. Waited some more....and after seventeen minutes of waiting, my tacos were finally ready. A random woman from the back came up to me and loosely tossed me my bag of warm delights. Her hands were wet, as if she had been washing dishes---a little off putting as the handles of my bag were wet, but easy forgiven..well, because TACOS. So I hop in my car, ravenously open the bag and steaming Styrofoam container to find my two hot tacos wrapped in the most delicious looking, fresh tortillas I had ever seen (okay, I'm exaggerating...a little ..but still). The pros: Both tacos were seasoned well, very hot and fresh... and the carne guisada had a little kick to it that was surprisingly great. The cons: They don't offer crispy tacos. Whaaa. Also...No cheese, lettuce or tomato ?? Por que? No salsa? Por que, no? I guess I could have asked, but I always thought that was standard. I was too hungry to complain. I will know next time. Yes, there WILL be a next time...because these tacos were good. I'm a tough critic when it comes to tacos (see my Austin Taco Project review) so take my word for it, these were great. I did have to run back in to use the bottle opener for my Jarritos soda. (Rookie move, guess I"m not a G after all ;) ) I also totally forgot about the carwash... The gorditas are the real deal here!! Have tried the tacos and the tortillas are made in house so the are delicious but the gorditas have that unique flavor you just can't find at any regular place. The barbacoa ones have to be eaten. read more

My friend and I go here regularly to eat because the food is authentic but we won't be going back. Today, we saw 3 huge balls of dough sitting out on a table in the back. They make tortillas so we figured that's why there was so much dough. A male employee was cleaning a sink right next to the dough with a hose splashing the dirty water around. But the worst part was he sneezed and turned his head away from the now clean sink TO THE PILES OF DOUGH! TWICE! We'll never go back. It's a shame that tortilleras aren't ubiquitous in Austin. Rio Grande #2 (#1 is up on Braker Ln) is one of the rare ones, and they serve very good antojitos to boot. I had a fantastic gordita with nopales and pork in red chili sauce, and a good taco with guisado verde (and I usually don't like guisado). They've got fresh tortillas and fried chips and salsa for sale of course, as well as churros, buñuelos and paletas. read more

Real Mexican food in south Austin. Tacos and Gorditas are fresh, hot and only $1.99. Last week I had two fantastic chicken Gorditas and was completely stuffed. This morning I had breakfast tacos overflowing with egg and potato on a fresh made tortillas. There is a nice assortment of Mexican sodas and pastries. The girls working behind the counter all speak English and couldn't have been nicer. I noticed they also do catering and sell homemade tortillas and chips in bulk. 4.5 stars Get the gorditas! I highly recommend the lengua, the catcus, the potato, and the barbacoa, but they all looked amazing. Imagine a pita pocket (of homemade tortilla) with cheese and filling. Messy to eat, but oh so wonderful. The condiments were all fresh (your usual onions, salsas, cilantro). You can tell that this is a mom and pop place with excellent food. If you're feeling adventurous, try the menudo (basically beef tripe/stomach lining in chili pepper sauce). If you're feeling less adventurous, the breakfast tacos are where it's at. Service is really slow (like, if you have a party of 8 y'all won't be eating at the same time), but the food is totally worth it. Get a back of chips and salsa while you're waiting. read more

First of all, if you are looking for a place that takes COVID precautions seriously, then this is not the place for you. Salsa bar with chopped up cilantro, lime and onion was wide open for anyone and everyone to touch and serve themselves. I had two gorditas with nopal and carne desebrada. They were ok, nothing great. My sister wasn't impressed with her tacos either. She was expecting home made tortillas, but they were more like store bought tortillas. The taco meat was ok, but nothing flavorful. Cashier was friendly, but the place didn't look very clean throughout including the bathrooms. I would not go there again. read more

I drove 20 miles to get my favorite gorditas. When I got there, there was a lady at the counter waiting to place her order. The girl behind the counter was on the phone oblivious to the fact she had customers waiting. I don't know how long the lady in front of me had been standing there watching the girl casually talking on the phone. ( I am sure she wasn't t taking someone's order). Don't freak out......English is not the first dialect spoken here but not to worry, the language of fresh tortillas is universal. The corn tortillas are kept in a cooler to keep them hot and moist. It's almost impossible to not to fish one of them out and eat it (them) on the way home. The flour tortillas come raw with little paper sheaths between them. When you cook them they puff up a bit and soon you'll be spreading butter all over them and your hands. But wait, there's more.............they serve food too and some respectable breakfast tacos. I've had the menudo and it's as good as my mom's (sorry Madre). All in all don't be afraid to wander in and try some of this authentic Mexi-CAN food. read more

Hard hard pass for me. The reastraunt in cleanish, the staff will have a language barrier if you are an English speaker. But the reason for the pass is the food just not testing good. It's really dirty tasting like bad dirty grill or cutting board tasting. I got 4 tacos I always try the tacos first on their own before heading salsa to judge them fairly in which case these did not taste good it was $8 for three tacos I only ate half of the first one. I figured maybe it was just the dirty grill caused it. It was 9 in the morning and then I added this salsa the red to my second bite. What a mistake it tastes like straight up dirty nasty dishwater then you mix that with nasty cutting board flavor on the tacos and it is just a terrible taste it was a bacon and egg taco and I tasted neither. The tortillas are very thin I actually prefer the H-E-B brand over these. There's a lot of really good Mexican food in Mexican food trucks that are a lot better and flavor atmosphere and ease of ordering just do yourself a favor and skip this one I don't care if it's the closest one to your house it's not worth it. I would cage fight a roided out pitbull on meth for their tacos. Heres what you need to know. -1.75 tacos. Yes 1.75. They are loaded with ingredients that are authentic, fresh and friggin so delicious you actually cant quite believe you arent at some some Iron Chef audition or something. Yes they are that good. -Chicken Mole Taco. It is better than a Sausage McMuffin, even when the folks at McD's toast the muffin really good. I know, hard to believe. -Cactus and pork with red sauce taco. Sex in mouth. -You can add cheese. With the exception of the mole taco, you should do this. When you add the cheese they actually grill the taco, melt the cheese and it becomes a sort of tacodilla. Outstanding. -Salsas are incredible. -Churros. MMMMMMMM HMMMMMM. read more

Not much of an atmosphere, as this place is primarily a tortilla factory. But, the tacos and gorditas may be the best in Austin. Their pollo con mole is out if this world! No salsa required. I was knocked out by their picidillo and debrashada as well. Haven't tried the breakfast tacos yet. But you can bet I will. Only downside, they close at 7pm. And, there can be a lunch hour rush. I had given up in Austin tacos. Some have good food, horrible, from a package, store bought tortillas. Some have horrible food & tortillas! But then I found this place... ahhhh, to have homemade tortillas while in Austin, and not just the corn, the flour tortillas are homemade as well. The food is delicious. Service is a little lacking, (which is why they didn't get 5 stars), but the food and tortillas, the prices too, definitely make up for it. If you haven't been by, you have to try it.
