We're went here tonight as we're visiting Birmingham for the week and was craving decent pizza. This place came up with high ratings and not too far from the hotel where we're staying at. The place was pretty busy, so I always take that as a good sign. They were very friendly and sat us down right away. The server came with the menu, was very enthusiastic and friendly. Took our order and gave us an ETA on the food. When it came, it was the wrong order. She apologized profusely and said they're putting a rush on the replacement order. A few minutes after the correct order came, the manager came over to our table and apologized some more and offered us a discount on our order. Certainly unexpected but much appreciated! Had this on our "want to go" list. Had been trying to get here for the longest. Bad decision. We sat there for an hour waiting on two 10" pies. We understood that they're made from scratch, but there were others getting their pizzas before us that arrived WELL after we did. We got up to leave and explained to the staff that we were waiting too long. We did have places to be afterwards, but waiting over an hour is too much. What's worse is that we only got "I'm sorry" & "I understand". No "how can we make this right". We ended up getting the pizzas to go as we were starving but no type of discount, extra whatever or anything. Just "pay for I guess". Also, fiancés pizza had mushrooms on it after asking for them to be removed. We will not be back. Huge let down. read more

I finally had a chance to try Tortugas Pizza. Wow!! The deep dish we ordered was amazing. Tons of cheese and meat and the pie was cooked perfectly. I had a great conversation with Josh one of the managers. I can't believe this place has been in business for 24 years and I have been missing out on some phenomenal pizza. Relatively new to the area, I see their sign every time I'm on 150. Seven neighbors out for dinner and this was the choice. Excited to finally go! Fantastic little place tucked into a strip mall with 3 curbside tables they happily brought together for us. (They wiped the tables and all the chairs so we wouldn't have to sit on any pollen. Very thoughtful!) They occupy two spaces in the strip mall. It appears one side is primarily the kitchen with a few tables and the other side is mostly seating. Having lived in the Chicago area for 10+ years I loved all the Chicago memorabilia! Our server could not have been nicer. We ordered two large Traditional pizzas, two people had house salads that looked freshly made (and received very good reviews), some had wine, others had soft drinks. Sturdy-enough paper plates and real utensils, not plastic. She gave us a progress update when she came out to offer refills and she was spot on. Pizzas arrived hot, cut into squares, super cheesy and yummy looking. They were delicious! The onion and green pepper were plentiful and easy to find if those aren't your favorite toppings. The sausage was very tasty, and the crust was perfect. (We ordered the one that is more like a hand-tossed rather than the deep dish.) The evening? Lovely, temps perfect, service thoughtful and attentive, food delicious...great little place! I honestly can't wait to go back!! read more

Tortugas absolutely lives up to its reputation as a gorgeous small pizzeria with mouthwatering pizzas at a fair and reasonable price. All of their pizzas are made fresh, most of them being made right when you order. The staff were beyond friendly and always came out to inform me on the progress of my order. The thin-crust pizza slices I got were absolutely delicious and straight out of the oven. I was unable to get a Chicago style pizza while in the restaurant but I got one to-go and it was fantastic. Tortugas Pizza is some of the best pizza I've ever eaten ! The red sauce not only delicious but to me unique. It's like an Italian Granny has been cooking this forever....and very consistently delicious. I was in a situation whereas I had to order this by delivery last night. I found this available through Instacart and appears to be teamed up with Uber on this delivery. Regardless, the delivery was as ordered and the food was still warm upon arrival from the Hoover HWY 150 location to Liberty Park. Now being a seasoned customer, it has been impossible for me to place an order from Tortugas without getting the stuffed pizza with red sauce. I prefer this stuffed pizza with garlic and Italian sausage. This order also had green bell peppers. I will continue to be a loyal customer and fan of Tortugas as long as they keep making delicious food. By the way, about 8 years ago...crazy circumstances left me with 3 whole loafs of that incredible Leidenheimer French Bread that's served in all the great restaurants in New Orleans. I had an employee get me 3 loafs of this bread from Publix in Gulf Shores. The loafs are at least 36" long. I was leaving work after 5pm and carried a couple loafs of this wonderful Leidenheimer bread to Tortugas downtown to the location near Good People Brewery and gave the owner a loaf if his use, if he used one to make 3 subs for me to go. He did and those subs too were incredible. I wish Leidenheimer bread was available in our location. The only place I've found it is when ordering PO Boys from THE ROUGAROUX Cajun joint in Avondale. read more

My wife and I have enjoyed Tortuga's for a long time. This time we paid around $45 for a pizza only to discover when we got home that it was chock full of raw onions and raw peppers. It absolutely ruined the pizza. We had to basically deconstruct the entire pie, to try and remove the raw veggies (especially the onions). Of course, this turned the pizza into a big mess. My wife sent the management a message on social media but did not get a response. We like Tortugas but we won't be getting another pizza there for a very long time after this experience. And, we'll either eat it at the store to ensure that any issues are dealt with or we'll ask them to skip the onions entirely read more

Hiked at Oak Mountain all day and was starving. A Yelp search for pizza led us to this place-just a little hole in the wall. They had great reviews, so we decided to try it. Walked in two minutes before closing, but they made our pizza before they shut down. I cannot remember when I've had a better pizza! Everything was soggy. I've found 2 olive pits in the quarter of the pizza I ate. Get a new olive supplier. There is a crazy lack of cheese for Chicago style. Overall, a disappointment. Holy hell...Glad this place is in Birmingham and not Chicago, it would have been ran out of Chicago a long time ago. Sauce was watery and bland, toppings were not par cooked and still raw in the pie, crust had no personality, whole thing needed another 10 minutes in the over. Hands down the best stuffed pizza south of Chicago. I covered this restaurant in one of my first Yelp reviews ever. It was 2007. George W Bush was in the White House, Tony Petelos was mayor, and Highway 150 was largely undeveloped. I was a young Yelper with big ideas. This is the original Tortugas restaurant and it has stayed true to itself. It is the epitome of the neighborhood, family owned and operated business. The walls are covered with pictures of family, friends, and sports memorabilia. An allegiance to the Cubs is obvious. The owners are Carlos and Carol. They are friendly, and will ensure that you have a great experience. The stuffed pizzas are my "go to". The pizza slices are close to two inches high. The ingredients are fresh and tasty. The hand tossed dough is always cooked just right. I love the pizza sauce and especially the occasional pieces of crushed tomato or garlic. Delicious! read more

Today was family outing day. My husband and I decided to treat our boys' by trying out a new restaurant. My husband had heard great things about Tortugas so we decided to find out if it was worth the hype. Let me just say....definitely worth the hype. My husband is normally a thin crust pizza guy--which Tortugas has--but we decided we wanted to try the deep dish. We choose the 12" pizza, which was more than enough for us. We took home 3 slices. We got a cheese pizza with pepperoni and smoked sausage. It takes about 45 minutes for the deep dish to cook, which we already knew because we had read reviews. My husband, an avid Cardinals fan, had a discussion with the owner. They engaged in friendly banter about the rivalry between the Cubs & Cardinals. The owner also brought out dough that my boys played with while we waited. That was very thoughtful of her! It kept the kids from getting to restless while we waited. Also, while we waited, we were given complimentary garlic bread with marinara sauce. We demolished it; yes, it was really good. My youngest son wanted more. When the pizza was brought out, it looked like a pizza pie. Our waitress actually served the slices to us. This pizza is best eaten with a fork and knife to avoid a mess. This was absolutely the best deep dish pizza I've ever had. One slice was all my boys' and I needed. My husband had two. Our waitress boxed up our leftovers. The party at our table who used a credit card received their receipt and card back and the server hurried away. We had paid cash expecting change so that we could leave a 20% tip.
