It's been a while since I've been to a really inspiring Italian restaurant, and Toscanini is one. A few Yelper comments had me on guard but all doubts were dispelled. First, tables were socially distanced and plastic-divided (we don't have that in Florida). Next the selection of dishes from both the specials and regular menu were diverse and intriguing (along with regular favorites if that's your thing). The bread was great, my Peroni beer seemed to be more Italian than the Peroni you get at the supermarket - plus served in a Peroni glass, how great is that. I had a caesar salad - with anchovies, a total plus. My main special was farfalle with sausage, broccoli rabe, and tomatoes, a terrific mix that totally went together for flavors and textures, fresh ingredients, and just seemed like super authentic Italian. Plus you know it's real when it has sliced fresh garlic, not chopped from a bottle. A big portion (finished it all) but not heavy and I didn't feel stuffed, just happy! We were looking for a casual place for an early dinner, and we found a great one! The atmosphere is warm and inviting. Freddy knows his food and had us feeling like regulars in no time. We shared a delicious, lightly fried calamari. We each ordered the special papadelle with chicken and broccoli in a cream vodka sauce. Fantastic! I recommend it highly. As good as the entree was, and it was delicious, both the flourless chocolate cake and the Belgian chocolate mousse cake were incredible. It was worth the trip just for the dessert. A lovely restaurant in Port Washington with friendly service, delicious food, and a comfortable yet "formal" atmosphere. My friends and I all had the fish special which was very flavorful. We loved that they did not rush us out of the restaurant giving us all of the time we wanted to talk and laugh. Really a 3.5, but as I am forced to rate up or down, I'm going to be generous and go with a 4. Toscanini is a fairly typical upscale (but casual) Italian restaurant serving standard Italian fare, but the service was unusually friendly, lending a customers-are-family vibe to the experience. The artichoke oreganata special was incredibly delicious, and big enough for three people to share. Soaked in a lemony-garlic broth, the boiled and then breaded artichoke was one of the best preparations of one my favorite vegetables I've had yet. For dinner, I went with the fettuccine primavera in garlic and olive oil, my mom had an eggplant special, and my hubbie had the veal sorentina. We were all satisfied, but none of these dishes stood out as much as the appetizer. The space is nice, with a homey feel, and on a Sunday evening wasn't crowded. I was in search for a restaurant to accommodate a group of 35 for a weekday lunch and stumbled upon this place on Yelp. I've driven by this place so many times and never knew they had such wonderful service and food! When I spoke to Alfredo the owner on the phone initially, he was enthusiastic and promised us a great dining experience, and he definitely lived up to his promise. He was incredible and took care of all of us with the help of his staff who was just as great. He made sure we were all taken care of at all points of the meal, especially when it came to the wine! When a few people needed to leave before the main course was served, he made sure to bag their meals to go in a timely fashion so they wouldn't miss out. He was personable and a perfect host. We did a price fix menu (extremely reasonably priced and he will work with you on pricing) and the food was excellent from beginning to end. Everyone was happy, even the harder to please Italians in the family! The lunch portions are just as large as dinner. You won't leave hungry. read more

I hate these types of reviews because the owner is such a nice man who seemingly takes pride in his restaurant. That being said... I don't understand how this place is still in business. The food selection is not impressive and the few times I have gone there I've been far from impressed. It seems to me like this is one of those restaurants that base most of their income on alcohol sales to keep it afloat, but thats just a guess and I don't know that for sure.. I just work in restaurants and that is just my honest opinion. I'm polite, so if I was invited to have dinner there I won't huff and puff and blow the idea down, but it would never be a choice of mine and I will def be eating a bit before I get there and have a few drinks to "soften the blow" read more

I was there last night with 25 people for a rehearsal dinner and I would give the place 6 stars if I could. I don't have a single complaint about anything. The owner Freddie greeted us as soon as we walked in and was an absolute gentleman all night. Anything we needed he took care of right away. I enjoyed every single thing that was served. Good food, good friends, good atmosphere...what else could one ask for in a restaurant! Freddy and Dee do a great job front of the house. Everyone is made to feel welcome whether they are there for their first visit (what took you so long?) or are regulars! The menu is extensive, well-priced and has something for every taste. I have so many favorites I can't list them all; my hubs loves the sole francese. There are so many wonderful appetizers and salads to choose from I keep saying I'm going to order several apps but the main courses always lure me away...I eat the apps, part of the main and take the rest home. I'll keep this quick and to the point. This is a more upscale but still typical Italian Restaurant that has a great, quiet atmosphere and seeming upscale decor. The food was great - I ordered the fish special and it was outstanding. The only reason it is not a 5 star was the waiter's recommendation of the veal chop, which was not only the most expensive item on the menu (I really dislike when they do this unless the dish is amazing) but was actually pretty bland and not worth the cost. Service was top notch though and the owner was going around to each table asking how everything was. I will be back! read more

We had a 7:30 reservation this past Saturday. We four arrived promptly to a very full restaurant. There were other people waiting to be seated ahead of us. The lovely hostess told us she didn't know how long the wait would be, "10-20- minutes- I really don't know". To our observation every table was in the middle of their dinner. We decided it would be at least 40-45 minutes before we were seated. I am very disappointed as this was my first time going here- it was recommended. I cannot tolerate patronizing a restaurant that does not honor reservations within 15 minutes. We left. read more

The Bread is really good! But that's not all! The calamari was crispy and the Pasta Dishes - Muah! (The baked clams were a bit small and dry) My husband had the Rigatoni Bolognese (Ground Veal & Beef sauce with a touch of cream). This was Really Great! I wish the pasta was a bit more al dente but the sauce was spot on! I ordered the Special: Rissoto Frutti di Mare. Talk about a TON of seafood! If you are a shrimp lover, I only had 2 shrimps so beware. I don't like shrimp in my pasta so it was great! Calimari, Clams, Mussels galore! The risotto was great yet I feel that they would have been better separate. It just seemed like all the seafood poured over the risotto took away from it's true beauty. As a dish it was truly delicious but the risotto was hidden away. The dish would have been just as good over pasta. The Cannoli was homemade and did not taste like the norm. It was good though. But the real winner was the Tiramisu- holy cow, it was huge - and I could eat it ALL! Definitely get the Tiramisu. Not the most traditional but a wonderful compromise of soft + fluffy and dense. read more

We live in Port Washington for a while but never ate here until last night, and I'm glad we did. The owner, Freddy was extremely friendly and welcoming. The service was excellent, food was delicious. We started with two very generous glasses of wine, my wife had the Ortolano salad and I had Penne Bolognese as appetizer, both excellent. Entree was Chicken Anthony for my wife, I had Rigatoni Pollo Oreganata, again very tasty and generous portions. Dessert was tiramisu, sweet and delicious. Owner offered us after dinner drink but we were stuffed. Overall an excellent find for casual meal, will definitely be back. read more

Toscanini, very pretty room and delicious food at reasonable prices. Friendly staff and overall great environment, sort of come to expect this in the great town of Port. Salads were fresh and delicious and their artichoke special was out of this world. It's listed as an appetizer but could easily pass for a meal, artichoke oreganata comes served in a hearty broth/soup, great for dipping and spooning. Pasta dishes were also yummy. It was my first time ordering from this restaurant. So I order a fettuccini alfredo hoping it was good based on the reviews. Unfortunately, I was so disappointed. The sauce was not smooth and silky like it should be. The sauce was separate it and at the bottom of the container it was a layered of oil. It is such a basic Italian dish but it was not executed correctly. I know alfredo sauce is not a light sauce but the consistency of the sauce is very important. Im not a chef but I know how a alfredo sauce should look like and taste like. Also, some of the bread that came with it, tasted old. At least not all of them. The pasta was not appetizing at all. My husband and I are visiting Long Island from out of state and found Toscanini after seeing a movie nearby. The Chicken Crudaiola was very good - the chicken cutlet was moist and tasty, and the arugula, tomatoes and mozzarella kept it fresh. And the Lasagne was EXCELLENT, especially paired with the Chianti. The meal ended deliciously with Sambuca and espresso. But the thing that will have us coming back is the friendly service. Freddy, the restaurant owner, is incredibly personable with all guests, as were all members of the staff. When he found out we were planning to call an Uber to get back to our hotel, he insisted on giving us a ride (his son, Florent, ended up taking us, on his way home. Very nice guy!) We look forward to returning to Toscanini on our next visit to LI. read more

Strange. That describes me pretty well. I get reminded of that from time to time. Even my mother once said I was strange. Coincidentally, while I was in Port Washington recently I happened to stop by Toscanini and met Freddy, the Owner who has similar traits. The main difference between Freddy and I is he runs a great restaurant. In fact, during our visit, he spent a fair amount of time going from table to table making sure his customers were all properly informed, well served and suitably content, which they all were. Anyway, I started with their baked clams, which were very nicely prepared with bread crumbs and hints of garlic and oregano. The standout at our table was the Salmon which was a nice hunk of fish with a lovely sauce made from mandarin orange and white wine with some asparagus on top. That is an unusual but very good combination because it was perfectly made with the exact balance needed to make it taste exquisitely different. It came with escarole which had several cloves of nicely roasted garlic mixed in. Roasting garlic is a time consuming way to make the cloves taste buttery instead of garlicky. For dessert we had their home made Tartufo, sliced balls of vanilla and chocolate ice cream with a cherry center, dipped in dark chocolate and sliced. It was excellent, as was the coffee. So different as it may be, Toscanini's is an excellent restaurant that's well worth a special trip. read more

Years ago we had dinner there for the first with family members. For some reason the maitre' d offered complimentry after dinner drinks to every table except ours. I was insulted and never went back for 7 years. Today we decided totry it again, and are we glad we did! The owner Freddie was extremely gracious and accomodating as to menu modifications that we asked for. The food was wonderful. I remember home cooked Italian food as a kid eating in my Italian friends homes. This was even better. The menu is extensive and the service was superb. I am so happy we came back. Came across this restaurant last Friday night as we were walking down Main street. I ordered the fish special and my wife had their lasagna. Everything was really good. The wait staff is very friendly and the owner walks around to each table greeting everyone. On our way out the owner stopped us and inquired as to how we found the restaurant and what brought us out. I was looking for a small, charming restaurant with a varied menu for a special family dinner, and Toscanini gave us even more than we had hoped for. The decor is cozy yet sophisticated, with plenty of space between the tables for privacy. The host was friendly and informative, and was impressively respectful and attentive towards my father, who is elderly and frail. The wait staff was equally considerate and helpful. Toscanini's menu is large and varied, and they offered many daily specials. Between the seven of us, we ordered artichoke oreganta, fried zucchini sticks, and a mozzarella/olive/tomato platter for appetizers. Everything was perfectly prepared and delicious. For our main dishes, we had salmon with pears (special), potato gnocchi, grilled chicken over vegetables, gluten-free penne a-la-vodka with spinach, and frutti di mare. The portions were huge (we all went home with leftovers), the salmon, chicken and seafood were tender and flavorful, and the pasta dishes were cooked to a perfect al-dente. The vegetables were fresh and not overcooked. The staff also brought a dessert platter and accompanied us in singing "happy birthday" to one of our guests. We dined there with two other couples, one of whom is friendly with the owner, Freddie. The service and hospitality were beyond anything we have experienced lately. Everyone enjoyed the food. The wine, which our waiter suggested, was excellent. Although we all felt too full for dessert, we couldn't resist the fresh fruit with whipped cream and the biscotti with strawberries and cream which Freddie sent over "on the house."
