I look around and who's there..not that it isn't comfortably "enough" filled, but not exactly a hive or hotspot of energy in the dining clientele, a lot of bored tourists, seems like a lot of checked-out people, no fashion on display, no dates it seemed, parents with precocious children on meal plans, STAID STAID STAID Harvard crowd, no zing..but it's always that way, this is probably the nicest restatuant in Harvard Square, and it's not their fault if the only local signs of life are stodgy retired professors on pension blah blah. Have you ever been put in the friend zone? It happened to me once, in high school, before I wised up and learned how to play The Game. Friend-zoning is when someone decides they want to do everything but fool around with you. It could be for any number of reasons. "It's not that I don't think you're attractive. You're very attractive. I just really enjoy your company as a friend and I don't want to ruin that." "I don't think of you that way. I love you like a sibling." Boys, let me translate. This either means she has someone else in mind or it means you're not man enough on some level. You're "cute." Or "sweet." You never want to hear a woman say you're "cute" because she means you're cute like a gerbil. But you wouldn't cast Nuzzles the hamster as the Terminator, would you? You wouldn't even cast him as the Terminator's armpit hair. It's not bad news if she says you're "pretty" cute. That means she's talking about your physical attractiveness but just "cute" means remember to put Kleenex on your shopping list, virgin. Things seem to be changing for women for the better. I'm glad. No society can thrive if women suffer. But one thing will not change: Women are attracted to a masculinity that gets their evolutionary chemistry all excited. Some men have it. Some don't. Women want a guy who could run out of the cave, bop the saber-toothed tiger over the head and bring home the meat. If you've been friend-zoned, you're more likely the guy who can buy her a frappuccino with his rewards card. Nice to look at, no doubt, but you lack what she's looking for on a visceral level. She'll hang out with you, but she won't stay for the good stuff. This has been my relationship with every single flashy restaurant in Boston in the eight years I've lived here. I've friend-zoned Townsman, Empire, Legal Crossing, and Strega. These are just the tip of the iceberg. I have a platonic relationship with these restaurants, i.e., I'll go in for a few drinks, but my mind is on the place with the slow-cooked, well-seasoned food just waiting to make my night perfect. Until last month, when, riding in on a white horse, Toscano took my breath away. Toscano just won this season of 'The Bachelorette.' Walking in, you get the old Townsman vibe: Martinis, cocktail dresses, buttoned-up shirts, stock portfolios, and orgies on secret islands. Then the enthusiastic, light-speed waitress brings you your veal Milanese, a slab of meat the shape and size of Antarctica. You bite into it. It has a crisp crust. The crust is lightly seasoned with what tastes like oregano and the always-pleasing bite of black pepper. The veal itself is cooked so perfectly that it's still tender on the inside. This is hard to do because of how thin a veal cutlet is. It takes an experienced, watchful eye to get that right. And it never seems to end. You can barely shovel in the last few forkfuls but you do it because it's that good. Instead of making the relationship complicated, Toscano keeps it simple. The veal is accompanied by a simple, lightly dressed side salad. The salad eggs you on, assuring you that it's right there if you need a fresh contrast to the veal. I finished it all. I was charmed. I was dazzled. I thought only I could make a breaded cutlet that well. Then came the pasta course. Here's what a good pasta bolognese should be: Balanced between creamy and saucy, just a notch above al dente if it's penne, sprinkled liberally with Parmigiano Reggiano and black pepper, and the meat has to taste like it was simmered for hours. Top with chopped parsley. A dab of butter is optional but I suggest you try not giving a shit if you eat at Toscano. Butter is necessary to tie a bolognese together. The bolognese hit every mark. I added a little salt and pepper because I'm a fussy maniac but I don't think most people will need it. I had leftovers but I couldn't stay away from them. Later that night, I crept out of my bed at 2 a.m. and finished the rest using my hands standing at the refrigerator. I topped the meal with some strong Negronis. Soon, they hijacked my brain and flew it to an undisclosed location. If the light fixtures had fallen straight onto my head at that moment, I would have sizzled to death a happy man. Toscano? Our party of two came here for Sunday lunch during restaurant week. For $20 you get an appetizer, an entree and a dessert! Upon arrival we were greeted by a friendly hostess and seated immediately. Cute decors and lights, warm ambience with top notch service. Our server made sure we were satisfied with our meal. Cups were always refilled. The somewhat warm focaccia bread and olive oil was good. Cappuccino was better than that from Starbucks. Appetizer: +Tuscan salad: big portion; lots of veggies. +tomato soup: not a big fan. it was like tomato sauce to me; I expected something creamier and more like cream soup. Entree: -shrimp pasta: the super firm al dente wasn't cooked enough. I love al dente but it was just too chewy. The sauce was too bland and not seasoned well. The dish did not taste good at all but undoubtedly it was a hearty entree. +sirloin: highlight of the meal! Medium rare sirloin that was actually cooked to medium rare. The white caper sauce added just enough flavor to the meat and the portion was big! The small red potatos that came with it were a little too firm. Dessert: +tiramisu: delicious tiramisu!! There were three layers to this delicacy-- sponge cake ,some sort of custard and cream. It's delicious. -blueberry tart: way too sweet to my liking. Plenty of (sour)blueberry but it was just too sweet for me to like it. Overall, the restaurant week menu was a steal! For the price I'll definitely come back. Colleagues and I are in town for business and decided to check out Harvard square. Saw this on yelp and went in. We were asked if we had reservations but thankfully beat the dinner rush and were able to secure a nice spot. Note: make reservations if possible. All 3 of us ended up ordering seafood. Had the special oysters as an appetizer. (My first experience!) I was surprised at how it tasted really well-not rubbery nor fishy as I imagined since haven't ventured for it in the past. I had the branzino which was delightful. Colleagues had seafood risotto, the other seafood pasta. All 3 dishes were seasoned very well-can taste all the components. Based on the stellar reviews and an appealing-looking menu, I was eager to try Toscano Harvard Square. I was nearby on an inclement evening, so I dined there. The mediocre quality of the ingredients and the cooking was really surprising. The food was at a level that you would find at a chain restaurant such as The Cheesecake Factory (maybe Cheesecake Factory is better; it's been a while). The house olive oil was appalling. One can easily find better oil at a Star Market. The oven-roasted pork tenderloin was underwhelming. It took the kitchen three tries to make roasted potatoes that were neither underdone nor burnt. A side of sauteed spinach was very bland. The meal also consisted of minestrone, a glass of pinot noir, and chamomile tea. This cost $72, not including taxes and a tip. The disconnect between the quality of the meal and the price that was charged was nothing short of amazing. read more

Normally, Toscano is a little bit on the pricey side. However, I went during restaurant week and got AMAZING food for a great price. I loved the steak in the brandy sauce. Their sauce had the best balance of brandy, cream, and cracked pepper. The steak was cooked perfectly. We got an entree plate for a great deal. I had the crab risotto and it was okay. It wasn't so good where it was worth the price. However, their dessert tiramisu was very good. It wasn't a typical tiramisu, but it tasted delicious. My mom got the steak (bistecca di filetto) and the steak was cooked well but didn't seem to have any seasoning on it? The veal scaloppine was pretty good and was dressed with a lemon sauce. I got the orecchiette vitello which tasted like crushed tomatoes from a can with ground veal and mushrooms. That being said though, the blueberry white chocolate tart was divine with a deliciously buttery tart!! The atmosphere and service were superb; the food was good, but not great. * Caesar salad and bruschetta for starters - a heavy dose of garlic in the bruschetta was a fantastic opening for our meal, offset by a caesar salad dressing which was heavy/mayonaisse-y. * Venison in green peppercorn sauce - meat was cooked perfectly, sauce was on the sweet side. * Gnocchi - undercooked with a bland cheese sauce. * Risotto with homemade sausage - I've never had fresh tomatoes in a risotto before, which threw the flavor off for me. Came for a late lunch/early dinner. Tuscan cuisine. Was one of our best meals in Boston. On low carb diet, so got the Caprese salad (the burrata was sublime) and 4 cheese tasting. Mains were: wood-grilled Atlantic swordfish loin, and Bistecca de Filetto (10 oz filet) substituting asparagus for the potatoes. The main were perfectly cooked and flavorful. The steak was perfectly medium rare, tender and charred to give favor. Everything was excellent, especially the service. Would definitely return. read more

The waiter exhibited complete lack of attention and took forever to render basic needs such as refilling the water and bringing the check. In fact, it took nearly 25 minutes, 2 bus boys, and 0 waiters to bring the bill, which the waiter snatched up immediately when we placed the payment inside. As for the food, the crust of the pizza was very thin and over cooked. It made chewing a terribly difficult feat that left my jaw tapping out after the second slice. I've been here twice. The first time, I had the scallops dish and the pasta with crabmeat. The spinach that came with the scallops was so good! It wasn't memorable, but it wasn't bad. We got 3 desserts to share: creme brûlée, tiramisu, and white chocolate blueberry tart. My favorite dessert of all time is their white chocolate blueberry tart. It's just the right balance of sweetness. The creme brûlée was also delicious. I was really disappointed with the tiramisu here. Don't get it! I came back last weekend and we got the panini Toscano, bolognese, and the blueberry tart. The panini came out so warm and ooey delicious. I totally recommend it if you don't mind waiting 10-15min for them to make it. The bolognese was delicious as well. It's a little different than the regular bolognese you get at other restaurants because it is a white sauce. The lunch size was a perfect portion for me. I really enjoyed this place for lunch. I thought their pricing was great (most things under $15) especially for some of the pricey places in Harvard. We came at around noon and had our choice of seats by the open windows. We also had a baby with us and they were very accommodating. I got the four cheese gnocchi and found it to be delicious. It's also a pretty filling meal because it's on the heavy side. My friend got the chicken caesar which came with two big chicken breasts, which she enjoyed. One of our favorite places to go eat! Lighter Italian cuisine with such delicious selections and reasonable prices. Ordered the branzino, which was average as I felt the quality of the fish was a bit suspect but the flavor of the plate was decent. However the oysters were a homerun as they were fresh and plump. I planned a work lunch here during Dine Out Boston. This location caps regular dining at 12 people (while the Beacon Hill location caps it at 10). Any additional people required private dining, which has a $600-700 food and beverage minimum. Large reservations also require a credit card on file. The Dine Out Boston menu was a great deal at 3 courses for $25/pp before tax and gratuity. We all left full. I had the panzanella, sirloin, and tiramisu. The panzanella was okay though I wouldn't purposefully order it again. The sirloin was nicely done and my favorite part of the meal. The tiramisu was my least favorite. The texture of the cream was more like pudding, which threw a lot of us off. We also ordered both the white and red wine on the Dine Out Boston menu (~30/bottle) and were pleased with the quality. Each course came out at the same time, which is wonderful for large group dining. She's a massive fan of the Rigatoni Toscano, that unctuous, smokey, salty plate of warmth. Bacon, smoke, tomato cream, more smoke, house-made pasta - good for a hangover, first date, biz meeting, whatever. I like it; most love it. Toscano splits full portions, which is ideal for indecisive tasters like me who benefit from a half Orecchiette Vitello, half Pappardelle Bolognese Blanco for the full entree price of $22. The convenience is more compelling than the otherwise decent pastas and sauces. The bread basket delivers day olds (or, at best, morning of), as some pieces were rock hard. It's not just the bread that's cold. FOH have been both warm and congenial, and alarmingly aloof on separate visits. Once it started at the host stand, which set the tone for the entire evening. I have been here quite a few times already (lunch, dinner) so obviously I love their food. My favorites are the Toscano pasta (it comes with rigatoni and a hearty/savory red meat sauce), the mushroom risotto, the osso buco (tender and juicy; amazing sauce) and their blueberry white chocolate torte (not too sweet; the crust is addictive). I also was once served a mushroom dish that was cooked on their grill. It was unbelievably "bacon-y" and they told me it was just mushrooms and olive oil and salt (hint-hint for the vegetarians out there). I was bummed that the mushroom dish was just seasonal because I can eat that everyday. They also have a limoncello martini which I really like (although I ask for extra limoncello because I like mine really sweet). The best part? They have Diet Coke that comes in a bottle and for some reason, it tastes way better than Diet Coke from a can or fountain (this is probably what won me over). The service is awesome also. On all the occasions I dined there, the waiters have always been so friendly and cheerful. At one of my dinners there, my friend and I reserved a table for 8 people, on a super busy Saturday night. None of his other friends showed up, but nevertheless, our waiter was patient about it (even though we took up seats that could have gone to the other patrons who were waiting). We of course gave the seats up so that they can seat other guests. (I felt totally bad for even taking up seats when we were getting flaked on). I was also here for New Year's Eve and they were handing out noise makers and hats. I thought it was really cool that the entire restaurant celebrated with everybody. Michael S.'s review was correct. The interior was very nice too; a nice touch of lemons and corks in a glass envase as you walk into the restaurant really caught my eye. We sat in the back room that was more cozy and intimate, great for a group of four. The conversation was great; the service good but nothing special. To start we had the prosciutto and carpaccio. The prosciutto wrapped in melon was delectable; however, the carpaccio, even with truffile oil atop (an extra $2) felt like it had no flavor. My my main dish was less than memorable; the pesto was very dry on the linguine. Honestly, I think my Trader Joes' pesto leaves a more savory and satisfying dish. Though I am not sure about Harvard Square in general. I found the portions rather small for dinner. Both of us were able to eat our entire plate of pasta, when usually I would be struggling to finish. There was also not as much meat as I would have liked in my dish. The salmon appetizer was ok, kind of wished we got something else. And the tiramisu had more filling than cake. Overall there was nothing spectacular about this restaurant. Recently, we chose Toscano in Harvard Square to celebrate our friend's birthday. First, I'd like to mention that our host was very accommodating by modifying our reservation when I notified them that some of our party would be 30 minutes late. Many establishments would not be as accommodating, but Toscano found a way to make it happen. Second, our waiter was very attentive and understanding while some of us sat at the table with appetizers, salads, and adult beverages waiting for the rest of our party to arrive. Later, he explained the specials and two of us decided to try them. The tuna, recommended rare, was delicious and cooked perfectly. The sole was also fresh and enjoyed as were the more traditional pasta dishes. For dessert we split cannolis and a white chocolate and blueberry tort, and those were scrumptious with after dinner drinks, coffee, and espresso. It's closed to the Harvard square. Street parking on sides. I think it is a part of the adult education center. Open in the afternoon The decoration is good. High end, great light. They have a nice reservation system. You can feel the class even from the menus folder. I came here for the pasta so I ordered only just that. It was fine. However I can't say it was a pleasant experience. My waiter D, greeted me 10min after I seated. He has a very bad attitude. He collected my plates and bread basket while I was still working on them.
