First impression as I walked in: intimate and average/quiet. It looks like a good date restaurant. There is an upstairs, although I didn't check it out. I was alone so I sat at the bar. Given it is the day after Thanksgiving, it wasn't crowded at 7 PM. From my bar perch I could see the action in the kitchen through the large window that separates the two. La Mira has a small menu, but a very nice 4 course option between $55-65. If I was a bit more hungry I would have gone for it as I believe it is a good deal and more importantly allows you to take advantage of the menu. Tack on $30 if you want to add their wine pairing of 3 different wines, also a good deal, as a glass of wine will cost $13-16. Had I gone with that option, the beet salad, bolognese and hen all looked amazing. I never even looked at the desert options. I opted for their full bolognese for $33. Was expecting more after having read many reviews referring to the place as a hidden gem, but it was more just hidden. Both the food and the drinks varied much in quality - while the better ones were pretty good, the worse ones were mediocre at best. Much of the praise seems to come from the authentic feeling of the dishes, but without quality authenticity alone means little. We have been big fans of La Morra for years which makes writing this review disappointing. The restaurant has taken a turn for the worse recently. On one of our recent meals there, we sat as a trio at the bar for dinner. We ordered a bottle of wine and were told it was sold out. The bar tender recommended a different bottle and said it was just as good. She failed to mention it was 3x the price of the bottle we had selected. We did not catch this until we were paying the check. We paid and wrote it off as an off night at La Morra. Last night was our breaking point. We went for dinner as a group and had a terrible experience. The restaurant was not overly crowded but the servers basically ignored our group. We had a reservation and started at the bar while we waited for friends to join up. Our bar drinks were made incorrectly but we shook it off. Requests went unfilled at the table, we spent a large chunk of the meal without drinks because the waitstaff did not check in and ask if we wanted more wine etc. An order was brought to the table incorrectly and the staff insisted it was the correct item. The item in question was a dish that the diner was allergic to so there was no way it would have been ordered. Dishes we usually love to order were not up to par. The check was also brought to our table before we received our after dinner drinks. It felt like the staff was trying to rush us out when there were still other patrons in the restaurant. We would have spent more money if the staff had not been so rude. We will be taking a break from La Morra and we hope the team takes some time to improve. A Dream Dinner at La Morra - A New Favorite in Brookline My wife and I recently had the pleasure of dining at La Morra, and we can wholeheartedly say it was one of the finest meals we've ever experienced. We began with a salad of strawberry, hazelnuts and greens that was nothing short of graceful. What a find right near my Brookline hotel. No need to go to the North End! The housemade ricotta amuse bouche is delightful. I had dinner here twice while I was in the area, so I tried the beet and frisée salad one night, and the savoy cabbage with pomegranates and hazelnuts the next. Both were delicious. The cavatelli with shrimp and peppers is very good. But as I was told, the bolognese is terrific. And being a Michigan girl, when they said the bolognese is the favorite of a certain football player with both Michigan and Boston ties, of course I had to take that advice! DINE OUT BOSTON Experience overall: 6.81/10 The overall ambiance of the restaurant could be described similarly to "99 Restaurant". The choice in music made me feel like I was in a early 2000s club, and most of the background conversation came from staff (nothing wrong with that). It made intimate conversations a little hard to hear but created an environment where it was fine to be a bit loud and expressive, very homey and warm. My partner and I wished for a more attentive service from our waiters but understand it was busy, though our dinner lasted 5:30-7:20( a bit too long for our taste since a good amount of it was us waiting for our orders). Sadly my favourite part of the dinner was my drink, which was delish but shouldn't be the best part of any expensive dinner, and for my partner it was the coffee with dessert. I ordered the Bruschetta and you could never go wrong with that, the pesto was bright and flavourful, and the beefsteak tomatoes were hearty and sweet but I will say the bread from the appetizer and the table bread they give you with Ricotta was very tough and hard to chew. We both had the Spaghetti Limone and sadly the sauce was broken so it had a lot of potential but became very separated and oily. For the protein entrees I received the hanger steak and my other half the Cornish hen. My steak was perfectly cooked but I got the sense that perhaps the targeted demographic was towards older folk because it lacked in salt and seasoning for both of our dishes. In the end I was disappointed in my experience but feel as though if I went again when there was no event the quality would go up. I would be willing to come again to give this place another chance but I wouldn't go out of my way to make a reservation soon. If my advice meant anything I would suggest maybe a more relaxing music playlist that could contain jazz or classic old Italian music to really immerse the clients. Better and cleaner presentation in the dishes makes a whole lot of difference and stronger appreciation towards the hard work I know goes into the kitchen staff; and lastly better timing in between dishes for a more efficient and attentive service experience. read more

We came here for Dine Out Boston and it was kind of underwhelming. I'm not sure how their regular menu is, but the dishes for their dine out boston menu that we tried were very salty and confusing. The salads had an overwhelming taste of vinegar and the one with the shrimp was super fishy so it tasted like ocean + vinegar. The gnocchi tasted actually pretty good but it was way too salty. If it was less salty, it would've been a great dish. The hanger steak was very disappointing (I couldn't cut it with my knife because it was so tough and should not have been extra $$). However the hake fish dish was pretty solid and yummy, especially the fried cauliflower. The sorbet was yummy but definitely tastes like it was store-bought and artificial. Overall, I don't think the food was worth $55+ per person and maybe it would be better if we ordered the regular dishes. The service was normal but interesting that they just placed the utensils right on the table without a cloth every dish. I just personally don't think the table was clean enough to put our utensils bare on the table. The environment was cute and gave off old fashioned vibes, which I could appreciate. Unfortunately, La Morra has lost it's shine. Have been here many times. Came for dinner the other night and sat at the bar. Bread was cold and did not seem very fresh. Pappardelle was cooked al dente but the boar ragu was a bit dry (not sure if it had been made well in advance) and the dish was too salty. Quaint restaurant with high class service. Ordered a bottle of wine off their extensive menu. Food came out super quick. Ordered 2 salads and two entrees and two desserts and we ate family style. I made reservations for my boyfriend and I on a Saturday and it wasn't actually too crowded, at least during the time we went at around 6:00. Parking wasn't too bad despite it being street parking. When we walked in we were greeted by a super friendly host who led us to our table on the second floor. Such a nice surprise because the downstairs area was pretty small. One thing I appreciated about their dine out menu was the amount of options that were offered; even though it was just a tad annoying that many of the options had an additional up charge. For my appetizer I ordered the wood grilled bruschetta which was delicious. Super simple but the basil pine nut pesto was just spot on, and a great combo with the tomatoes and bruschetta. My boyfriend ordered the corn salad and I thought that was delicious as well! Very light and refreshing with great flavor! For my entree, I tried the tagliatelle al ragú and it was truly one of the best bolognese I've ever had. Highly recommend! My boyfriend had the hen, and I wasn't sure what to expect with that but it was cooked really well and had a tender texture and flavor. Finally for my dessert we both ordered the chocolate panna cotta which honestly was just ok. It was super small and a little too simple for my liking. Overall I enjoyed the food at this restaurant and would come again. I'm a local who has been to La Morra many times over the years. Sadly, there have been too many issues with recent experiences. Some of these are nit-picky but there shouldn't be this many problems from a restaurant that has been in the past one of the best in Brookline. I'd really implore the ownership to take a close look at operations. Just from the last two experiences: - Service was somewhat inattentive. Food left on the table between courses, unfilled water glasses - Ricotta desperately needs salt. Others have mentioned this, why hasn't it been addressed? - Vegetables on cornish hen dish also lacked any salt - Bread is terrific when fresh but a few pieces were stale - Cornish hen skin wasn't crispy enough - Steak was over-salted - Pasta on lobster dish was clearly homemade but clumped together in the cooking and therefore tasted gummy in places That's a lot from just a handful of dishes. read more

Things I Love About La Morra: 1. The Lasagna al Coniglio. The menu changes often, so you should probably get over there before they take it off. I realize this is a rabbit and polenta lasagna with a thyme gremolata, and those words don't entirely compute as something many of you would want to eat or even things that make sense, but it is fantastic. 2. The fact that they are willing to make something like a rabbit and polenta lasagna, or a sweet potato ravioli in a spicy duck broth, or a parmesan sformata...judging by my relatives that live in the neighborhood, these aren't dishes that appeal to everyone, but I like the chances being taken. And because of the quality of the kitchen, most of them work. 3. The bread service (although the accompanying ricotta could've used some more seasoning). And the overall service. Our waitress was so sweet and helpful I could've sworn she was hitting on me. 4. The autumn salad (apples. toasted pecans, ricotta salata and ginger vinaigrette...as much as I've liked a gem salad in a minute). The hake (just an excellent fish dish overall). The oxtail brasato (rich, and perfect with the mashed carrots). I'm going to try and make this thing, and even if I only get it 50% of the way there, it's still going to be great. 5. The fact that my aunt told me she knew the chef from when he was a little kid in the neighborhood. That's cute. Things I Don't Love About La Morra: 1. Would you like ice water or sparkling? The million dollar question they're trained to ask every time because if you say sparkling water it'll be 7$, this is not disclosed at all when they offer it to you, of course I'd rather have ice water if i knew it would be 7$ less?! I thought it would be free since it's essentially water, seems like a very sneaky sales tactic, also there's a "kitchen tax" added to every bill, to fix the gap between tip employees and kitchen staff? This is absurd fee I've never seen in my life, what am I going to call the waiter over to argue about an extra dollar ? They guilt you into paying a nonsense optional charge. Why don't you fix the gap by paying them more and raising the price of the food? Very unethical sales tactics here. The food is pretty good, I got the hen and wasn't let down on flavor at all. The restaurant is very old and sits on an ugly street overseeing fast cars going by. Maybe a bit expensive considering all this. We used to love this place for the food and the ambiance. In fact a year ago, we had one of the best meals ever at La Morra to celebrate our daughter's 21st bday. She asked to return this year for her bday and the restaurant was unrecognizable-- the menu was paired down to only one fish entree (I don't eat meat), the waiter seemed hesitant with fine dining, the place was unnaturally packed (there were no longer aisles to exit from our table, and it felt like a fire hazard upstairs), and I had the worst fish dish I have ever had anywhere in my life. (It was monkfish and literally made me gag.) Everyone else, including the bday girl, had mediocre meals, and yet it was more expensive than ever. This spot is taking part in the Dine Out Boston this August so I was excited to try a decently priced three-course tasting menu, which is supposed to feature the best face of the restaurant you would think... I don't even remember what I had for the appetizer because it was so unmemorable... I think the corn salad? But, it was two dollars extra... Everything was just ok. The halibut was really good, but the sides were not good. Stringy pea shoots were clumsy to eat and the mashed potatoes were not anything particularly special. Not worth the $6 supplemental cost. The mint panna cotta with peach and amaretto biscuits left me very confused. Separately, the elements of the dish were ok. The slight mint fragranced panna cotta tasted strange with the tart peach, only made strangers with the almond cookie crumble. Weird, but I didn't dislike it? Overall, because of all the supplemental charges, I don't think this meal was worth the price. They did have glass panels separating the tables, which was good for COVID and all. We came for a Tasting Collective Dinner - set 5 course meal. The first course was the Papa al Pomodoro, which was much thicker than most soups but delicious. The Tagilatelle Bolognese, famous for being Tom Brady's favorite, lived up to the hype and would bring me back. The menu changes by season, but two of my favorite appetizers (which tend to remain constant) are the fried sage leaves with anchovy and the arancini. The wine selection is excellent, and if you are in the mood to splurge I highly recommend the prix fixe with the wine pairing - I have never been disappointed with it! Prices here are definitely on the higher side, but so is the quality. Atmosphere is simultaneously homey and romantic, with dim lighting and two floors. You can usually find street parking on route 9, but there is also parking available at one of the nearby businesses. La Morra also started serving lunch this year, which is a bit more affordable and just as delicious! I'm always looking for great restaurants in Brookline and unfortunately La Morra isn't it. What we ordered: - lasagne al coniglio with crispy polenta, rabbit ragu, matsutake mushroom, parmigiano ($28, 1/5) - wood grilled pork chop, mushrooms, honey nut squash, fennel mostarda ($32, 3/5) I honestly was pretty excited to try the lasagna with rabbit ragu, but man, it was disappointing. There were tiny bones in my ragu that made it very unappetizing. The flavor was weirdly sweet and incredibly salty. I ended up kind of eating the polenta and couldn't even finish half of the dish. Thankfully the wood grilled pork chop was better. The pork chop itself was well cooked and tender, however the sauce tasted overly sweet and smoky. There wasn't very much balance in the flavors they were trying to introduce. I am still so bummed writing this review--I am always about supporting local businesses, but I have to be honest. haven't regretted dining at a restaurant in a very long time, and it makes me sad to say that the food served here was really not the greatest. read more

Truthfully an interesting experience. I am mainly giving 2 stars for the price point of the menu and quantity of food. My partner and I went for Dine Out Boston the other night, and we were quite disappointed. We were genuinely looking forward to this experience because it is a local restaurant, and we have passed it numerous times. The dinner set was listed at $38 per person on their online menu, but we were charged $46 per person in store. We continued to dine accordingly because we were already there, and had already heard many great things about the restaurant. On top of the discrepancy between the online price and in store price, there were also upcharges per dish on the fixed menu. As most of us know, typically the goal of Dine Out Boston is to have a lower price point to display the variety of dishes the restaurant offers. There generally isn't an upcharge for items on these menus because the lower price is to help develop a loyal customer base. Sadly, we do not believe we would go back, nor recommend. As far as food and service go, we paid $17 for a cheese plate of maybe a clementine sized group of 3 cheeses- when it was brought over, we had no explanation of which cheeses were which. La Morra is one of the best restaurants in the area. The menu is unique and changes seasonally with a few main staples that remain all year long. I highly recommend the red and green salad. It's a simple salad of just red and green lettuces. It's perfectly dressed and manages to be light, yet very satisfying. A great entree is the spaghetti limone. One of my go-to solid Italian spots in Boston. I usually get their Cicchetti- or tapas-style appetizers (as in chichirria/small bites), which are correctly priced for my wallet and delicious. My favorite go-to cicchetti items are: ***fried sage leaves (has anchovies!)-- delightful crunch from tempura-style batter and strong pop of saltiness from the anchovies ***arancini- cheese rice balls ***meatballs- porcini and mushrooms ***incarozza- grilled cheese with anchovies (these are not usually on the menu though) **I usually like the chicken/duck liver with toasted baguettes (but I got a bad batch one time and I haven't ordered it since) You can't go wrong with any of their antipasti salads. They usually have a 3-course prix fixe arrangement so you can get some discount on doing that antipasti, main, and dessert combo. The woman who took our takeout order was super friendly, but the food was mostly disappointing. I ordered eggplant parm, which definitely tasted like it was deep fried in shared oil with fish, and was too gross for a vegetarian to eat. I'm really frustrated with every course of our "Dine Out Boston" meal. Both of our salad courses, the celery and the kumquat salads had so much vinegar that the salads were bitingly acidic and uncomfortable to eat. Next, our pasta courses, the carbonara and the ragu were so shockingly salty that we did not finish them. My hangar steak dish of the the course was smoked and had not been described that way on the menu. If it has I would've opted for another main. The beef was so smoked that it tasted like an andouille sausage and nothing like steak. Even the broccoli rabe underneath was smoked. My partner found his hen dish okay enough because he likes smoked flavor profiles. Finally, we opted for the espresso caramel cake. Neither of us were able to get this dessert down. We came here for my birthday in August, which also happened to match up with Dine Out Boston, and everything was excellent! I had the grilled corn salad for the starter while my husband had the grilled zucchini salad, and both were very good. Next, I had the ravioli, which was also delicious. For the main course, I had the grilled blue fish while my husband had the hanger steak. Both were cooked perfectly and well seasoned. Finally, for dessert, I had the braised plum while my husband had the grasshopper panda cotta. The whole meal really was wonderful, and the dining room upstairs was quiet, peaceful, and overall a lovely place. We came here for Valentine's Day and had a fabulous evening. So many courses with the pre fixe that we could only eat half of each plate. However, great way to sample numerous authentic Italian dishes. We got a bottle of the montepulciano merlot blend from Abruzzo. Was so incredible that we ordered a second bottle, had one glass and took it to go so we could have more at home!! Not usually a fan of doing pre fixe menus but was a fabulous date night!
