Not my first trip to Toshi, but my first review. Needed a break from Christmas shopping and Toshi hit the mark. I had the lunch special, Tempura shrimp with Golden California roll. Comes with miso soup and a side salad. It's the perfect size for lunch. Not too big or heavy and the food was fantastic. The restaurant has a very friendly vibe and the server was on point. On a recent visit we had a strange experience to which the lovely owner Rassa immediately remedied. It doesn't often happen that owners not only take accountability, but also swift action to fix an issue. Tonight's takeout order was simply delicious and very much in line with that I've come to expect from their flavor, quality, and presentation. The salmon was buttery, the avocado at peak ripeness, and the the overall rolls super satisfying. Stumbled upon this restaurant pn the way to San Luis Obispo. It's a cute, nicely spaced restaurant! We ordered the lunch special which is two rolls for $16. We ordered the Heart Attack and Santa Margarita rolls. They were good! I believe we liked the Santa Margarita more. The service was quick and easy. Why did the sushi cross the road? Sushi could get to the other side. I just maki that up. Friends had mentioned that the old Toshi's is now named Toshi 1.0, and when driving by we saw a Change of Ownership notice in the front window and decided to revisit this Japanese/sushi eatery. The staff was welcoming and friendly. We started with a pot of Yamamotoyama green tea to decide what to try today. For our appetizers, we chose their Agedashi Tofu & Fried Avocado. Their preparation of the agedashi was different than others, but did not disappoint. The firm tofu's fried outer shell was crispy and wrapped with nori, while leaving a fluffy, pillowy inside. It was served in a delicious and somewhat delicate dashi broth garnished with bay scallops. A delicious, light savory dish. The Fried Avocado was a generous portion of crispy whole avocado filled with bay scallops and spicy crab which didn't have much kick to it. But, it was absolutely delicious. Trying to keep the carbs down, I ordered their Sashimi Bento as I didn't want a large amount of rice. The bento came with a salad, gyoza, edamame, four-piece California roll and six pieces of sashimi. Everything was fresh and delicious. The sashimi could have been cut a tad thicker, but it was very enjoyable. Their Sappa Roll consists of shrimp tempura, cream cheese & crab on the inside, topped with spicy tuna and wrapped in nori, then fried. The shrimp tempura ran the entire length of the roll, and blended tastefully with the cream cheese, krab and the spicy tuna topping. Frying the nori wrapped roll, gave it a crunchy finishing touch. So this used to be my go to place over a decade ago when Jon and Noel ran the place. I went in at least once a week, and sometimes more. Recently I wasn't able to get to nogis, and decided I'd try my old haunt instead. Bad move. My salmon skin roll was tough and chewy. My hamachi nigiri was "off" and bitter. The rice was crunchy and undercooked. My baked scallop roll was a sad little roll with very few scallops and barely browned on top. Well, this was a nice little local sushi restaurant. The staff were pleasant and the food was good. My biggest complaint was that it took forever for our food to get to us. There were only 3 other tables in the restaurant with us and all told, from start to end, it took us 1.5 hours to order, eat, and pay. It shouldn't take that long but I suspect it was because they had a lot of to go orders. I observed a steady stream of customers picking up to go orders. This is great for the restaurant of course. There were 3 sushi chefs at the front so I was puzzled as to why it took so long for us to get the food. So, aside from the wait, if you are on a date, have good conversation ready to go, and want good sushi, this place is good. We ordered for pickup the other night and the girl taking the ordered mistook my toshi roll order for the trust me roll. I am 6 months pregnant and was so sad when I received a roll that was all raw fish. Although the roll looked absolutely amazing, I was unable to eat it. I called them back and they were SO KIND about refunding me or crediting me for the correct roll. I went back the next day to retrieve my correct roll and I was greeted by the most friendly staff! I am most definitely planning to go back once this baby arrives so I can try the fresh fish rolls they offer. But we did enjoy the rolls we got this time! read more

Food is great, slightly overpriced. Service is horrible. There were maybe 3-4 tables in the restaurant and we ended up waiting over 30 minutes for 2 uncooked rolls and an appetizer... on top of that, we never got our appetizer. We got our rolls before our appetizer but at that point we just canceled it and the server looked surprised as if he forgot about our appetizer. At a point during the shift, all workers went to the back for some odd reason... I could only assume what they were doing mid shift(taking shots).... If I could give 10 stars I would. This is our favorite restaurant and we come here more than we'd like to admit! The fish is fresh, the staff is the best, and the service is superb. My husband I regularly order 'trust me' rolls and they consistently deliver. They are SO talented and not only have a great menu, but are always willing to make you something you'd like. Rassa, Nate, Dante, Pi, Tony, Sky, and Trey are so wonderful, we consider them friends. Fresh and delicious, with a wonderful selection of specialty Sushi Rolls. Our host and server were very helpful in making our dining selections, and everything paired nicely with their Sake and beer selections. You may want to ignore my so so rating, I lived in Japan for several years and this is not a sushi bar. This is a sushi roll (maki) bar. The nigiri selection is poor, only the ingredients needed to make their wide selection of foo foo rolls. And they did not know what I said when I sat down and ordered hot tea (in Japanese). The rolls are highly Americanized, even to the point of using movie stars to name them. That all said I came to eat so I ordered one of their rolls. It tasted great. Not like sushi as there was so much sweetness from the multiple sauces with the roll, but shedding the intention to get sushi and accepting their interpretation of what the American pallet would want from maki, it was quite good. So if you are looking for trendy Americanized sushi rolls you may really enjoy this place. The people were really friendly. Oh don't order the hot tea. It's not hot and it's Oolong not Sencha, unless you like that. read more

I've never been disappointed. The food always taste fresh, not fishy. Quick service, friendly staff; and a great sushi chef. The ambiences is small town artsy but still down to earth. They always have good music playing, and I always leave stuffed and satisfied. They have the sushi bar, and area seating. I ordered the sashimi bento box. We came from 1.5 hours away. I loved it so much I wanted to take a plate home for my son. Decided to try this place out since I had never been here before and their menu sounded interesting. So the actual rolls overall tasted good, I really have no complaints on the taste. My only issue is the rolls are some of the smallest rolls I've ever seen. It's like gas station sushi size (not gas station taste though). For like 18 to 20 a roll I expected a little more fish in and on the rolls. Would love to return since the rolls I got I haven't seen anywhere else locally but man I cant justify the price for what you get.
