Umi is one of my favorite sushi spots in Paso Robles. The food is always super delicious and fresh. They have many different options and choices you can pick from. The service is great, always welcoming and friendly. Very attentive as well. Not to mention there sizes and plates are worth the prices. It is located on an upstairs area right by the towns movie theater, so you have a nice view from outside and inside sitting area as well. Super enjoyable view and area. Very relaxing place as well if you want to go on a family dinner or dinner with your significant other. They are also pet friendly, they allow pets on their porch area. Came during the 4th of July, they were short staffed, and it was pretty empty. The manager and busboy were nice and attentive, but our waitress was a bit short and rude. She also only checked on us to take our orders and the check. What we ordered: Their jalapeños poppers - as my boyfriend said, "I didn't think you could mess up a dish with cream cheese and being deep fried, but this was tasteless." Pass. Tuna, fatty salmon, & uni nigiri - rice was mushy. The tuna and salmon were fine. However, the uni tasted rancid and I had to spit it out. Skip on the raw fish. Chicken katsu plate - the katsu was deep fried in old oil, the item came out black and tasted like old oil. Pink bear roll - it was slightly above average, I would have it again. The cowboy roll - it was good. If I ever went again, this is what I would order. Red hot chili roll - least favorite roll (very rice heavy, very little protein). Pass. Very spacious restaurant with a large menu with lots of potential, which is why we were excited, But we should've checked the reviews prior. The roll was good. As were the shrimp noodles. But I would not recommend this place. My friend's salad had old lettuce in it. Like when they dump it out of the bag and don't bother to see if it is too old to serve. Also the service was bad. The place was empty except for one other customer- so they were not busy. They never came to clear our dirty plates as we sat there and talked. They just kept talking to one another and walking past us empty handed. Lunch at this Japanese sushi was fabulous. Service was terrific - friendly, attentive and fast. Location was on the square, nice view of the park and very clean inside. My husband and I finally got a kid free morning and we stopped in. We got the best seat in the house in my opinion, on the porch overlooking the park. We got greeted by our sweet server. She was absolutely amazing and kind. We got the lunch Bento boxes which was more than enough and great options. My husband did the teriyaki beef and I did the Sashimi. The salmon was so fresh! My husband and I tried this place for the first time on Valentine's Day. The restaurant being almost empty should have been my first clue. It felt like the whole restaurant was being run by kids. The hostess could have dressed a little nicer and been a little friendly. Our waitress forgot to bring out utensils, napkins, and the wasabi / ginger plates until much after she served us food. She kept sitting on a chair on her phone. When I asked her for wasabi plates, she brought them back and kind of slammed them onto the table, like she was upset. The hot green tea, was barely warm at best, with almost no tea in it. It was basically just warm water. The sushi rolls were very good. The guy rushed to pick up clean plates before we were ready, and we felt rushed out of the business. The ambience was not great. I will not be going back unfortunately. read more

However, being told "I've been really busy" when inquiring about your order status that has taken over an hour to be completed is unacceptable. Well, we arrived for dinner, no reservation, but the place wasn't busy. We were told to pick a table and the host would follow with menus. That definitely didn't happen. Table was sticky and we weren't provided utensils or napkins until much after food arrived. Literally everything was an afterthought. Now let's talk the food. Everything was drowned with sauce. I'm not sure it was the appropriate sauce pairings either. I'm sure there was soft shell crab but the struggle was real! Nothing authentic! Im not the type to write reviews but my experience yesterday was the worst. I had gone with my girlfriend to eat dinner and we got seated pretty quickly so i thought we would get served quickly as well. But that wasn't the case we waited 40 minutes to get served or even be acknowledged by any of the servers. They kept walking by many times to clean up tables and attend other guests yet were ignoring us. It felt like they wanted us to just leave. The food also Took forever to get to us where we both were getting frustrated and losing our patience. Regardless of how annoyed and upset we were we were still nice to the staff. I didn't think they deserved a tip what so ever because service was terrible and didnt acknowledge us once they made us seem like we were pestering them to move faster. When we finished I had to go up to them and pay upfront what makes it unbelievable is that I got no apology or at Least a discount. A girl with glasses only started being friendly at the end as it that was going to make me tip and I just got my receipt and took off giving her back their folder. I have visited Umi a handful of times (as we are big sushi fans) and each visit gets worse and worse. I would have given Umi 5 stars for the food alone the first couple of times we visited but unfortunately their service is mediocre and continues to go downhill with every visit. The staff are very unfriendly, unenthused and the service is VERY, VERY slow. It took us about 10 minutes after getting a table to get waters this last visit and the space was almost completely empty. When receiving our food (we ordered deep fried rolls - Crazy Baby and Red Hot Chili), they were lukewarm at the very most. My deep fried roll was basically cold which made it very unenjoyable. The rolls themselves were good but could have been a lot warmer. When we got the bill, he took our card and came back like 10 minutes later. Location is great as it's in the heart of downtown Paso and up stairs on a second level so you can look out and people watch. But other than that, I have been really, really disappointed with Umi the last few visits and probably won't be coming back anytime soon. We came across this sushi place while walking around downtown Paso Robles. We had dinner here around 8pm and the place was moderately busy and understaffed. Our waiter was also working the sushi bar as well as a lot of tables. He worked hard for his tips that evening. The sushi was good. The sushi dinners are not inclusive of any soup or salad. I would not even call it a dinner. 8 or 13 pieces of sushi. No rolls, no soup, no salad. My wife had the chicken stir fry and she said it was ok. I enjoyed the sushi. Chilly night- could have definitely used a heater but gracious host comped us a piping hot pot of green tea to warm us up! Chirashi bowl was plentiful and very fresh! Had the unagi roll which was excellent and the California roll which was artificial crab..... but it was tasty nevertheless ( menu should stipulate not real crab although the very reasonable price should have been my guide here). Looking for something different for lunch up in Paso Robles, we noticed Umi Sushi & Sake. As it turns out, they have only been open a short time at this location and are still in their soft opening phase. Umi is located on the second level, adjacent to the Park Cinemas on Pine & 11th streets. For patrons who can not or prefer not to use the stairs, an exclusive elevator is available. Upon entering, we noticed the beautifully and thoughtfully decorated interior. One notices the floor emulates a sandy beach. As one proceeds into the dining area, the floor changes to mimic the ocean with brilliant oceanic blue and white hues. The furnishings in the spacious dining area are comfortable, and the decor is conducive to a relaxing dining experience. The interior is beautifully decorated with wall murals, muted-colored fish design lighting, with blue hued seating at the sushi bar. Very nice details abound. Their dining area has five booths, multiple tables, along with sushi bar seatings. In addition, there is also a balcony for al fresco dining, which offers a vista of City Park. An extensive menu offers many food and sake choices. Today, we ordered the Salmon Temptation roll and their 12-piece Umi Sashimi. Both were excellent. We look forward to Umi Sushi & Sake's upcoming grand opening and returning for another wonderful meal. read more

Went there for my birthday and had the boat. It's a great value for the price. The slices of the sashimi were cut nice and thick and very fresh. It melts in your mouth. We also had several rounds of the warm sake. It was very good with our meal. The only thing I would improve is on rice on the rolls. I don't think it had the rice vinegar to enhance to flavor of the sushi. Overall, the service was great. Ralph went out of his way to make sure we had everything. This is our favorite sushi spot in Paso! The food is always delicious and the atmosphere is family friendly. Unfortunately, the wait staff has severely slipped over the past few years. Portions of the order often get forgotten, and they only come to the table to drop off food but never check back up on you. I'm sad to have to give this review, but the way I was treated was unacceptable. My husband and I order to go frequently. We've had a few issues over the past 2 years, but tonight was by far the worst experience. We ordered a teriyaki bowl and a piece of nigiri. We were told 10-15 minutes. When we got there at 15 minutes the nigiri wasn't ready yet. The ladies at the counter told us just a few minutes. They never came back to check on us and after 20 minutes I went over to ask for a refund for the nigiri. The server told me it would take just as long to give us a refund as it would to wait. I tried to explain how long we had waited and she said she didn't tell me 15 minutes. Then she cut me off and told me to back off. She also said the customer is not always right. Extremely rude! The service and atmosphere is 10 out of 10. The wait staff are welcoming, warm, and the chefs greet you with a smile. The staff are super informative and do their best to accommodate your order. The food overall presentation wise was a 25 out of 10, completely off the charts. Our church group ordered various menu items from soups, bbq short ribs, custom rolls, set rolls, chicken teriyaki, and chicken katsu plates.
