This place is great due to their variety of ski equipment and price. The service is also very good. Honestly I would give them a five if not for the issue where they charge for a full package even though we have our own boots. I know most of the shops do this but for us we choose our skis based on the conditions. The staff was helpful and knowledgeable, we ended up up getting several pairs of goggles as well. After my ski lesson with Juanita at Okemo, she recommended that I come here to get boot fitted. My boots were giving me some trouble. I met with Geake and man did he change my life. First he told me my boots were two sizes to big! Crazy! I had no idea. He also informed me that I walk on the outside of my foot, which I didn't realize. Given that we were leaving next day I didn't have enough time to order new boots, so he informed me how to fasten my boot so my foot didn't slide too much while skiing and let me tell yall. Wow. The equipment was trash, so old it was ripe for the dumpster. The insole of the boots was cracked and really uncomfortable. When I complained they gave me a slightly better one and passed off the broken one to the customer next to me. The plastic edges of the boots were round from walking. I always rent my equipment but this was hands-down the oldest and outdated one. A Goodwill Store would have chucked it. read more

Was planning to spend the day at Okemo resort skiing so I needed to rent ski supplies. The process was really easy and fast. I was able to scan a QR code to access the website to choose which equipment to rent. Prices seemed good and the employees were knowledgeable and got us all the right sized gear. One of the best customer services I've received in a long time. Here's why: 1. My wife needed her snowboard sharpened and waxed for next day skiing. We arrived in the evening, towards the end of shop hrs, and the staff was able to turn it around for next day. This was a huge relief as we shopped around for other ski shops that could help within s short window of time. 2. I needed ski and boot rentals. Josh, one of the staff members, was incredibly helpful and hustled hard to get the right boot fit for me. At first I tried on many pairs, none of which seemed to be the right fit, so I ended up going to Okemo with a size I thought was right. Within moments of skiing I quickly realized they were too big. I texted Josh and he immediately searched for a new pair of boots, this time being the right size. It's experiences like this which makes a service great. Awesome service from a skilled team. I demo'd a bunch of skis this winter looking for a good narrow ski to rip on groomed and icy trails. So many shops only have demos for women in 155s. I'm tall and ski fast and that just doesn't cut it as a demo. Totem Pole has what other shops in the area (or in most ski towns nowadays) don't - atmosphere and great customer care. We have been renting from them for decades - service is friendly and quick and willing to answer all of our questions. They were also happy to admit if they needed help from hard good on our more technical questions. When we came in this season to buy new gear - myself, friend and her daughter (my goddaughter) - we were so impressed with how helpful the guys were and how great they were with my three year old goddaughter. You can tell after five minutes in the shop that they care about their customers because people were continually dropping by just to say hi or to ask for a quick tip or tune-up. We will happily be back to Totem Pole! I was so sad to see the other review about rentals because that, luckily, has never been our experience. read more

Rental reservations are not actual reservations. Put in a reservation for rental gear through their website two days ahead of time. When I showed up the day of to pick up, they told me they were all out of gear. They then explained to me that their reservationas are not actual reservations and they just give out gear on a 'first come, first serve' basis. Which of course completely defeats the purpose of a reservation system. The employees are also aware of this problem (did not sound like it was the first time this has happened) but whoever is in charge does not seem to think that they should change the system. They reimbursed the rental cost but obviously that doesn't make up for travel and lift ticket. After talking to the manager they at least called around and found another shop that was able to provide me with rental gear. I will look for other places to rent from if I make it to the area again. read more

Poor attention to simple details, I'd recommend looking for other budget rentals. Was given a pair of boots and skis of differing sizes that did not even attach together. By the time you would realize this at the slopes, it's too late. I ended up renting another pair of boots and skis at okemo's rentals as I did not want to waste any more precious hours on the slopes figuring out totem's mistake. Later on that day when I returned their equipment: Totems management accused me of fault as "I should've called". Note that cell service is nonexistent on the mountain and calling was not a possibility. Tl:dr, look for other budget rentals, it's not worth the headache. read more

I don't understand this business model. Ordered skis in advance, I get there and have to wait for about 45 minutes for a grand total of 6 people in front of us to get fitted. Why wasn't our equipment waiting for us? Why did we fill out the online form if they were just going to do everything from scratch when we got there? Why did they ask for all the info again? I rent from Totem pole every year to ski at Okemo and it's always been a great experience! Last year i did the premium package for rentals and loved the skis I got. This year I decided to invest in my own boots again, and Torin spent time to make sure they were the right boot/perfect fit. They were snug but comfortable on the slopes for the whole weekend. I got some brand new free boots from my best friend (wedding present) and they were incredibly painful. My feet are weird and smashed into the boot all over the place making skiing in them impossible. Totem Pole helped me out even though I didn't buy the boots there. They spent a couple hours with me and bumped my boots until they fit properly. It only took one return trip, which I expected. They were able to do this all before my big trip out to Utah where I currently am the happiest person in the world. Not only do my boots feel great, but I have been skiing for three days straight and I have no hot spots, no pain, no burrs, nothing that makes me want to punk out and sit in the lodge all day. I am so grateful that they took the time to straighten them out and listened to my complaints and gave me advice on how to get the full potential out of these boots (my old boots were 2 sizes too big so this was a huge step up for me). Torrin is an expert boot fitter and I do not think I have ever felt so comfortable skiing. In addition, Torrin solved another problem for me: I had left my bags at another hotel and needed to them shipped to me. Half the price of renting at Okemo. You can upgrade in $5 increments/day for higher performance brands. I did that. Not sure my snowplow technique improved because of it, but it was only $10 extra for my 2 days and felt worth it because I had saved money going to Totem Pole rather than the mountain. They have everything you may have forgotten to pack, too - socks, hand warmers, neck thingies, etc. Oh! For local racers and experts who want the absolute best custom boots and ski gear Totem Pole is the shop of choice, but they have a pretty huge selection and they deliver that same level of service to skiers and boarders of all levels. Frankly, if you're travelling in from out of town (we're from NYC) don't buy your ski gear at home. Buy it at Totem Pole, and you'll wind up much better off. They're open till 11pm on Friday nights all season, so you can arrive late and they'll still outfit you for skiing first thing Saturday morning. Geake and Torin are the lead equipment (boots especially) experts... they're always in the store, they're super nice, and they'll spend a lot of time with each customer to get you exactly the right setup. There's an army of technicians who work in the shop downstairs. They'll set your skis up perfectly and fix shoddy work done by others. For my setup, I'm a former competition mogul skier, ski/patrol, search and rescue etc.. and I was looking for super high performance, custom fit boots. I had a pair of custom foam injection race boots that I loved but they were getting old (20+ years). I was hoping that they could get my new boots to perform as well as my old ones, but they did much better than that. I've had custom, top-of-the-line equipment fitted all over the world (whistler, vail, san sicario) and the boots they fitted for me at Totem Pole are by far the best. They also fitted my wife (a novice) for new boots and skis. She's been on rentals several times. This was a whole new level for her. She couldn't believe what it feels like to have the right equipment. Even though my wife was looking for much more entry level stuff, they still spent a lot of time working with her. The shop has all the accessories too (helmets, goggles...). After thirty years of skiing mostly Vermont, I wouldn't shop anywhere else. read more

Husband's boot was no good since part of the tightener was broken. Ended up having to cut our day short on the mountain since the boot kept coming loose. When my husband mentioned it to the guy at the shop, he examined the boot and said it was broken but didn't offer a refund or even apologize for the inconvenience. He just said "ok you're all set for the return." Pretty poor customer service in my opinion. Will not be returning back and will tell others not to rent from here as well. There's another shop just next door that offer the same price rentals. Will try there when we head back to Okemo! read more

Totem pole ski shop is a genuine ski shop, very helpful and has a great atmosphere. I have been to other shops in VT and have not had an experience like I did with Totem Pole. I take all my friends here for rentals and purchases. - I ABSOLUTELY recommend this ski shop to anyone. A family member referred me to a shop in VT that I was going to for everything I needed all the years prior to my experience with Totem. Every time I walked in this other shop I had a different experience, sometimes they were great while others were rude and rushed, the customer service was never consistent. I discovered Totem last winter and I couldn't be any happier with the service I received. It was during one of the bigger snow storms and my skis I own just aren't good in that type of snow, so I demoed from Totem on 2 separate occasions throughout the winter. Both times the skis that the guys selected for me were great, I loved the second pair of skis so much I ended up pre-ordering them for this year! Torin helped me with this process and was very patient, always there for my hundreds of questions and concerns I had for him in regards to my new purchase. At totem pole the second you walk in the door someone acknowledges you with a simple hello and offers to help. Arrived at Okemo for my first day this season only to find a nasty gauge and a bent edge on my ski. Just bought them out west last year. Totem Pole was recommended as the best place for repair. Brought them in and Tom ( not sure of the name) said he could fix it but it would take a couple of days due to curing time for the epoxy. No problem I had another pair of skis, narrow but fine for the conditions. Woke up to a bunch of snow this AM and on a chance I stopped by and the skis were ready even though they were promised for the following day. Great job at a great price! read more

I have a family relative who once was an outstanding boot fitter in Vail, so I know a good fitter when I come across one. John was very patient and extremely knowledgable. Most important, he was completely honest with me. When he realized that he didn't have the right boot for me, he sent me down the street to another shop in town that had the boot.
