    Green, unkept pool.
    Dawn A.

We have been coming to this RV park for over a decade. This trip was very disappointing. We made our reservations for our group of five in n December of 2024. We were all assigned spots next to each other, like we've done in the past and this year only one spot remained the same. We had to ask for them to move 2 of us so we'd at least be somewhat close and they tried charging more for that. The park itself is deteriorating. The main set of bathrooms didn't work last year and this year they were still not working. The sites were dirty with small bits of trash everywhere. There were cats running all over and therefore cat poop which my leashed dog kept trying to get into. They had also climbed onto our picnic tables during the night. The pool made us very sad. It wasn't maintained and the water was green. Overall we were very disappointed with the park and we aren't sure we will be back.

Shame on Us For Not Doing Better Research... I initially wasn't going to post anything, but then I figured if our experience could help someone else make an educated decision on a place to park their RV for the night, weekend, the week, or even longer, then it was worth it, I guess. We went and checked this campground by car, before taking our RV there. Granted, it was the off season in late September 2024. With the exception of the quiet roar of the freeway and the one Amtrak train that went zooming by, it seemed fairly quiet for the few minutes we were there checking it out, so we booked a camping site for late October 2024. We did notice that the property's streets through the camp sites are all one-way, so make sure you turn on the street you need, or you'll have to go all the way around again. I mean, it makes sense to some degree, but having to circle the entire perimeter if you miss your street kind of sucks. It would've been nice to have them alternate, like a grid, but with the way the camping sites are set up, it does make sense. Good thing we learned this when we were in our car, checking this place out. The property is large, and looks like there are a lot of things to do, however, likely only in the warmer months. It's like pretty much a ghost town in late October, other than the full time/long term residents. The RV spots are large gravel pads with plenty of room to move around. There is nobody at the booth up front where you enter the property (again, probably an off-season thing), for check in, you have to drive all the way back to the little store at the back of the property, which has a cozy feel upon entering, but has a VERY limited inventory for purchase (at least when we were there). I will also ad, that there are a lot of nice big stone fire pits, but not in/at every site. There was not a fire pit on our site, but the site on one side of us and the cabin on the other side of us had one, which appears to be a shared pit. If we had a fire, they'd have to deal with it, and if they had a fire, we'd have to deal with it. It was pretty close to both the cabin and our awning. We were in full hook-ups, and once we had everything set up, we went to use the water and it was yellow, like pee water. I figured it was something wrong with our coach, so I tried to get water directly from the spigot, and it was the same color. We have a water test kit onboard, and based on the tests, it was safe to drink. Our dogs, however, felt differently, so we ended up using our onboard tank water, erroring on the side of caution. Once we finally had a chance to relax, I tried to connect to the Wi-Fi... Yeah, that didn't happen, so good luck with that. We took our dogs for a walk throughout the property, and there was dog poop everywhere. What the heck?? I had to sign a contract during booking that indicated that I could be fined if I was caught not cleaning up after my dog. The trash cans around the grounds were overflowing with trash, none of the grass was mowed, etc. The grounds were in complete disarray, which, I get it, it's the off season, and they probably don't expect much business. They probably rely on many of their fulltime/long term residents that either stay in the cabins or in RVs that have obviously been there for a long time, as indicated by the amount of clutter around them or the amount of pine needles, moss, and other debris covering them. There were even some older RVs there that had obvious exterior damage possibly from being is an accident. That all being said, the only open restroom we found during our walk around the property was the one at the store deep in the back of the property. All others that we saw were closed, presumably for the season. When the first Amtrak train went by... It zoomed by pretty fast and was gone as quickly as it came in. Didn't seem to be a big deal at first. We went to look, and the double set of railroad tracks are literally less than 100 feet from the back row of camp sites. Where we were, I'd say 500-1000 feet away from the tracks. A short while later, the first freight train came through. They move quite a bit slower and are a lot longer. The freight trains shook our entire camp site. I was ok the first couple times, but it seemed like some sort of train went by about every 20-30 minutes, around the clock. Like others have said, they do blow their horns a lot, and I get it, there are nearby crossings and the trains are moving at pretty good speeds, so yeah, safety first! Don't plan on getting any sleep if you stay here. We were going to leave after the first night, but per their policies, we wouldn't get a refund for our remaining time, so we just dealt with it. There's a pretty good chance that we won't come back. I will say, it was definitely an experience. Traveler beware!

Merrill Lake Campground is a pretty awesome spot. Awesome enough that I honestly hemmed and hawed…read moreover whether to even add it to Yelp. Although my better Yelp humanitarian judgment has won out here, I still hope you read this, enjoy it, and camp somewhere else. Why? This little campground only has about 9 sites. It's free but you need a discovery pass. There is a camp host and there are surprisingly clean pit toilets on-site, but no potable water. The sites fill up fast in the summer time, but have a 3-day limit that's enforced by the friendly but vigilant camp host. I don't want it to fill up even faster now that I'm sharing this, since I do plan to hit this spot at least one more time before summer is over. There are no reservations (first-come, first-served) and the campsites are designed to work for larger groups - some of them could easily fit 7-10 tents. Each site is spaced decently well away from the others, and offers a picnic table, fire ring and places to pitch. The sites don't really offer views of the lake, they're set back in the trees, but there's plenty of shade Not too dusty, but some sites are heavy with gravel. While it's car camping, you don't drive right in to your site but park in a common lot, then walk in (the farthest you'll have to walk is about 50 yards). So no car noise up close to your site. This little campground sits just by Merrill Lake, a nice smaller lake that does not (thankfully) allow motorized boats and fishing is restricted to fly only, catch + release. For these reasons the water is calmer, cleaner, and dotted with fly fishermen and specific times of the day. At the mid-July mark the lake was warm and clear... perfect for swimming and canoeing. There are some excellent trout holes around the edges of the lake, however I'm not a fly fisherman and don't believe in torturing anything I'm not able to then eat (so catch + release is not for me). However I can see how this would be an attractive spot for a fly fisherman. This campsite is a great place to get away from PDX. Only about 1h 35m in no traffic, and the drive (especially if you come up the 503) is a nice one. Very pastoral, windy road. Get out of your house this summer and sleep under the stars. Just do it at some other campsite since this one is mine.

Plus, the lakes in California don't even amount to the lakes in Washington/Oregon. My parents went to Merrill Lake Campground on Thursday to secure us a spot which was first come first serve. They managed to get a campsite (#4) that had a direct path to the lake (not the day use where most of the guests would walk to)! It was really big, the only downside was the hill which isn't ideal with little kiddos. Also, that we couldn't have a campfire due to Washington's high alert for fires. It just wasn't the same. You do need a discovery pass which we got at a store that was twelve minutes from the campsite- Lakeside Deli. It was $11 for a day use. The scenery was amazing. It wasn't hot at all where the campsite was. It was surrounded by trees. The water was so clear and clean. The weather was perfect once we made it out of the campsite, through the trail, and to shore. Oh god, and the drive. The drive up the mountain was the scariest I've ever seen. It was beautiful, but so scary. It was a great stay (for free at that!). I recommend this lake!

You do you and everyone else will do themselves. It all works. As you drive down NW Raider, you will pass the Island Cove Market. if you haven't bought a permit to park, stop here to get one. It's $7 a day or $30 for an annual pass, well worth it. Don't neglect to buy the permit, they patrol frequently and will fine or tow!!! Plus Mt. St. Helens and Mt. Hood standing proud. It's stunning! And so peaceful. There are no bathroom facilities. This is Sauvie Island and it's not built up or commercialized. That's part of the charm and why it remains so pristine. There are porta potties located every 40 feet or so along the parking area. As well as garbage bins. Do take all your trash with you, don't leave it on the beach. This beach is great for long walks, sunbathing, picnics, floating or swimming in the water. In the summer, the water is actually pretty warm. And few waves other than when a large barge goes by and creates some waves.
