On a trip full of burgers and BBQ, I held off on this stop and hung out while my husband indulged in a cheeseburger. I did get to sample a couple of bites, and this was my favorite burger of the whole trip. It featured a nice, thin patty with lightly crisped edges and the grilled onions were a great touch. Just finished my visit to the "legendary" Town Topic. Have been wanting to try it since I saw my mentor Anthony Bourdain's late night visit here. Perhaps a high blood alcohol content has something to do with the appeal, but I found both the very small double cheeseburger and onion rings to be painfully average. At half the price I might consider this landmark a viable quick lunch alternative. Town Topic came up on several "must do" things in KC. Being from the Midwest, (Minneapolis area) I love diners. TT did not disappoint! I had the 2 egg with bacon special with a load of the BEST hash browns I've had in a long time. The only down side is I won't be able to eat again the rest of the day because I'm too full! Fun joint--have some personal family history here so it makes it a must-do each time we come back through KC. We always go late at night and last night was not an exception! We put our order in and although it wasn't the busiest we've seen the place it still took 50 minutes to a double cheeseburger, double hamburger, and onion rings. There were a few people that had huge orders that I think held stuff up --like one person walking out with 4 bags of food type of thing. Their burgers are delicious...given we are always at least buzzed, they may just be pretty good burgers during sober times? I may never know... Their shakes are really good. We always have a good time people watching and although it can be a little rough there's often a police presence so that makes it a bit more pleasant. read more

This may sound absolutely crazy but their pancakes are absolutely delish! I don't know if it's the warm syrup or what, but they're amazing. I wasn't a fan of their BLT, the bacon was burnt to a crisp. I'm more of a fan of their breakfast food and the chocolate shakes. I got their omelet thingy with sausage/hashbrowns/cheese/eggs and it was so good that I was able to save 1/2 of it and reheat it for breakfast the next day. The crowd is a little interesting late at night but if you take your food to go- it's much more pleasant and less packed. Late night treat! read more

The burgers are amazing! Get the double cheese burger and onion rings. Something about that sauce on the burger or something that keeps me coming back for more! Since they open so late it's a fave for late nighters and the place is tiny so expect a crowd. It's hard to believe that I have lived in Kansas City as long as I have and have eaten at Town Topic as many times as I have and have never managed to write a review for this KC institution. That being said, I am huge fan of Town Topic on Broadway. The burgers are really good; they are small and crispy loaded with melty American cheese, pressed crispy against that old seasoned flattop and topped with mustard, pickles, and the all-important grilled onions. I would give the cheeseburgers here a solid 4/5 with that rating going up to 5/5 depending on your level of consciousness. When I was in my 20's and would go to the bars quite often this was a must stop for late-night cheeseburgers as they are open 24/7. Local tip: it can get pretty crazy in here after midnight especially on weekends: don't let the other seemingly crazy patrons scare you off, for the most part they don't bite;). Apart from the burgers here, the breakfast is also fantastic. It has been many years but my memories of the Truck Stop, a huge 3(or4) egg omelet filled with pretty much everything on the menu, like cheeses, hash browns, and your choice of a few different types of meat. If you go for breakfast here...definitely get the Truck Stop of the Broadway (which is just an even larger version of the Truck Stop!). Just make sure that either you are really hungry or you have a long day of work in front of you! Lastly, these days I have been purchasing my holiday pies from Town Topic. These are a hidden gem here in KC. If you don't want to make a pie for you next holiday get together then pre-order a few pies from Town Topic. For this past Thanksgiving I ordered an apple pie, a chocolate cream pie, and (my personal favorite) a banana cream pie. These were all extremely delicious and everyone at our Thanksgiving was thrilled by how good they all were! In summary, the burgers here are a solid 4/5, the breakfast is easily a 5/5, the pies are most definitely a 5/5, and the ambiance is about a 4/5. Honestly, Town Topic really does sit somewhere between an overall 4/5 and 5/5. Oh and don't let me forget, if you are trying to come dine here on a weekend after the bars close then I wish you luck in trying to even place an order. Often, they will take the phone off the hook so that you can't call in any orders and if you do manage to find some parking and fit your way inside then you might be looking at a 1 and 1/2 wait! My advice is to wait to try out Town Topic during off peak hours so you are able to get the best possible yummy food experience! read more

Small hole in the wall place with a counter to sit. The place is hopping with to go orders. They are very quick in the orders. Delicious burgers! On the greasy side, but sooo good. I was encouraged by a very, verrry attractive bank teller to try out Town Topic. So I did. I was surprised when I ordered a chili cheese coney to get split hotdogs and chili on a hamburger bun. Okay. That's fine. A little different but not bad. The strawberry shake was great. Thick, rich and creamy. The only issue I had were the fries. Not the taste. Tasted great. When I finally got them. As the server set my coney down she informed me that my fries would be done in just a moment. Well 30 moments later I still hadn't had my fries. Several other people did though. I reminded the server and got my fries. No apologies for the wait or anything. Just a here ya go, please enjoy. The food was still good so I'm going to give them another chance. Town Topic!!! There is a reason why this place has such a name, you guys. It's no wonder it is indeed the topic of the town. Essentially open at all hours of the day and consistently busy all of the time, it is always absolutely worth the wait and price for this delicious food. My friend and I come in frequently and sit at their mini bar inside and start what we call a "burger tab" and we will sit there for hours and eat burger after burger while sobering up from a fun night out. This place has single-handedly saved me from a drunken drive home (never have once, and any temptation to do so has led me to find this place). The staff are so very friendly, even when their tiny shop is swamped with waiting customers. They are well composed even on the busiest of nights and that really tells you something. One time my friend Megan and I sat down and talked for 3 hours, I think collectively between us we put away something like 12 burgers within that time (they are little, do not judge me!!) all of which had only ketchup and double pickles on it. I heard their breakfast is to die for but I have yet to try it. One day I will! It's just so tempting to sit and binge eat burgers on my burger tab until I feel like exploding. I think... I visited for breakfast and enjoyed a large order of biscuits and gravy, coffee, and a side of bacon. The quarters are cramped and the service is not rushed, but the food was warm and hearty. As a burger lover, after reading the Top 100 Burgers in the Country in Thrillist, this one was ranked pretty high so I was really looking forward to coming here. The double cheeseburger did not disappoint. It was simple, yet delicious. Great service and friendly staff. The only issue is that if you're claustrophobic, this place isn't going to cut it for you. Next to no where to move around or even sit. There's probably a total of 6 seats in the place. That has nothing to do with the food though. Loved the burger, excellent fried and awesome pie. Vintage Americana right here baby. Well priced as well. My girlfriend goes to medical school here in Kansas City so I'll be coming back next time for sure. read more

Really enjoyed this place for a nice quick super casual dinner! I was craving some burgers and I have not been to this place yet!! Apparently this place is THE place for a cheap good burger in KC. Most people go there after a night of drinking too! The place was super small and crammed but the staff had all friendly faces on. The waitress took our order to go right away and we both ordered a double cheese burger, fries, and a strawberry shake. The shake was super good! That was made super fast. The burgers took about 15 minutes. BEWARE there is no sink when you use the bathroom.... only hand sanitizer. Other than that, I was incredibly satisfied and cannot wait to go back and try their breakfast menu!!! Their hours are weird so make sure you double check before you head down there. read more

My friend took me here last Thursday after a night of drinking. From what I can remember, it was delicious! I don't know if it was because I was a little tipsy, but I remember great service and a dive atmosphere. I believe I ordered a double cheese burger with a fried egg on top of it. We also got an order of their onion rings. It was super crispy and fried to perfection! I'd like to come back here when I'm fully sober and give it another try. But for the time being, I'm giving it 4 stars because I remember devouring my burger with a smile on my face and the staff was awesome. I lived in the KC area my whole life, and downtown (Quality Hill) for five years before I moved away from the metro in 1996. Never once did I ever try Town Topic. That area always felt dodgy in those days (as did most the rest of downtown for that matter). My usual must have when back was Winstead's, but not so much in that last several years because it really seems to have gone down hill (Haddad Group, the owner, is currently in bankruptcy--hope someone saves this equally storied institution). So last summer I decided to try Town Topic. Love it! My new must have when in town. Burger was juicy and done to perfection. No limeaids, but they have excellent shakes--and pie! Not only is the food amazing but the experience alone is worth stopping by this burger joint. I had a double cheeseburger with fries and a root beer float but there are a lot of options that the whole family would enjoy. Everything is made fresh and right in front of you. Very fast, we waited for 6 minutes at the most for our food. This is a great place to step in and grab a quick bite to eat. However, there are not a lot of places to sit in the restaurant so if you just want to stop in and get something to go that would be your best option. Also if you decide to sit and eat in the restaurant your clothes will smell like a burger joint. Not saying that is good or bad, just saying you might want to consider that if you are planning on meeting with someone important afterwards. The prices were very reasonable for a burger and fries. I've passed by Town-Topic Hamburgers for several years, always telling myself, "I have to stop there someday." Today was the day! I was extremely happy with my decision. This is one of those hole-in-a-wall joints that you know why it's here... because it's good! Good luck getting a stool. The place is tiny. They crank out burgers, cheeseburgers, porkloin sandwiches, malts/shakes, fries and onion rings, pies and breakfast 24hours a day, 7 days a week. It's been there since 1937 (along with some of the clientele), and they'll probably be there for many years to come. I'm definitely coming back again.
