This is good eating! I was in the mood for a porkchop sandwich, and after a very quick Google, Jim's popped up. Once I looked over the menu, I knew I was interested in trying more than one side item, so I was pleased to know the porkchop sandwich came with fries! I placed my order over the phone, and picked up about 20 minutes later. The sandwich comes with lettuce, tomato, onion, mayo and pickles. The porckchop itself was seasoned well, and cooked perfectly! It's been a minute since I've had fried mushrooms, so when I saw them on the menu, I knew I was going to include them in my order. They were delicious, but some of the pieces were just the breading with no mushrooms inside. I'd still order them again! I'm a risk taker. My order totaled around $19, so if you're in the mood for something hearty, filling, and low cost, this is your place. --The restaurant itself was nice and clean, and the employee that assisted me was very kind. Warning - Don't be foolish and order a double; my single was almost too much to finish and I was hungry. Jim's is a bit of a dive restaurant, It has "diner" in it's name but is carryout only, and during Covid they ask that you wait outside after ordering. They tell you that orders take 10 minutes and after 9 minutes I returned just as my order was being sacked up - perfect. With no seating and not wanting to attempt eating this beast in my vehicle, I drove a few blocks east and found a picnic table at Swope Park on a nice autumn day. My order was a single cheese and I added bacon and jalapeno's. It came with the standard burger accompaniments - lettuce, tomato, pickle, mustard and ketchup. A very thick juicy patty and quite the anodyne for nursing a bit of a Saturday morning hangover. Fries were very average. A good basic thick burger but not worthy to be in my top 10. read more

Whenever I think of the expression 'greasy spoon,' I will fondly remember Jim's Diner, but not because it was very greasy or because a spoon was involved. But, this place... this epitomized the concept of the tiny diner that could, the local hidden gem that serves up amazing food in spectacular portions. When I first walked in, I heard the buzz of giant fans, and I thought, "Oh no, this place doesn't have a/c, and it's nearly 100 degrees out." Still, the reviews I'd read encouraged me to press on, as did the wonderful aroma of diner fare. This isn't a diner in the typical sense, though. First of all, there is but one table with three stalwart high chairs. You won't see a bevy of patrons here at any one time, as it is primarily carry-out. I wasn't about to eat in my car, though, but the table was more than adequate for just myself. Second, there isn't a huge menu of various dishes from all around the world. There are burgers. There are hot dogs. There are fries and tater tots and cakes and donuts. It's simple, it's direct, and it is unassuming. But, you're not going to find brie and foie gras and all that nonsense on your burgers here. Instead, you'll find bacon, cheese, chili, and jalepenos. Which is just what a solid burger place needs: good burgers! A truly decent burger isn't made so by toppings, but by beef and a solid supporting cast that doesn't try to take the lead. The patties are enormous, so please be cautious when ordering. I asked how big one patty was, and the woman told me it was only 7 and 1/2 ounces. ONLY! So, my double with bacon and cheese was probably over a pound of meat with the bacon. It was so big, but it was so good, I had to forego the remaining half of bun and toppings to finish the good stuff. It was an incredible experience. I didn't even notice the fans after a minute, and the burger was one I would readily order again. Maybe I might skip breakfast, though. Side of cheese tots was also very plentiful, and I didn't quite make it through half, though I chalk that up to the size of the burger too. Service: super friendly. She checked on me, even though I was divided by the counter and din of the fans. Overall, this was one of those experiences you hope to have when traveling, or even in your own backyard. Seek out Jim's, get it to go (or bet on the one table being open), and bring an appetite. read more

A friend of mine asked me about one of my favorite childhood memories and I told the story of my mom surprising me with an orange VHS tape of Good Burger and taking me to "Jim's Fat Burger" (real natives know) for my own "Mondo good burger" lol. finally got to try this place out, i got the double cheeseburger with bacon and jalapeños and tater tots, these burgers are made to order because you have to wait probably 10 minutes for your meal to arrive which i don't mind as long as its good food. the double cheeseburger was think and juicy the tater tots were hot and crunchy and come is a bag that you could fit a sandwich in... you get a lot. I did learn that they you can call in your order and pay for it when you get there so if you don't want to wait then call in your order and you'll be good to go. I had my burger around 12 1pm and i was still full from lunch that i wasn't even hungry for dinner. There's no tables to sit at so you take your food to go, they have to go menu's that they give you. What seems to be a popular meal is their pork chop(s) dinner that i think comes with 2 sides and maybe a drink. I will be back again. read more

Winner! My husband used to knock doors selling security and told me this place was a gem. He couldn't quite remember the name or specific location so it took us about three years to find it again. We both ordered burgers and a side of fries. Burgers didn't look juicy when they came out but don't let it fool you. It's not Blanc or any other fancy burger but if you're on Prospect that's not what you're looking for. You just want good food and good service. Two things you can't find outside of the hood. Makes me even more proud that I grew up in Northeast. Fries were slightly overcooked for my preference but that's how my husband likes them. *There is only one small high top table for two. This is right up my alley since I despise eating in public and don't particularly care for people in general. Missing Star: Love that Grandma was rocking her gospel music but it was pretty loud. Wow I was very pleased with a HUGE delicious cheesburger and Boudin balls!! This place is a hole in the wall but you really should try it I actually went for a later lunch beacuse I heard it gets very busy early! This is a take-out only place. You may want to call ahead... 10-15 minute prep time. The burgers are done the only fashioned way... 8oz balls smashed on the griddle and seasoned. They are medium well and delicious. I had a jalapeno cheeseburger with onion and mayo and it is hard to get any better. The buns are toasted as well, which is always a nice touch if white buns are being used. The boudin balls come with a horseradish BBQ dipping sauce and are crispy pillows of flavor. This place is near a property I own and I noticed the owner's renovations and decided to stop by. A pleasant urban experience. In the parking lot the guy in the car next to me was thoroughly enjoying whatever he had ordered so I knew I was in for something good. The service was friendly and the place had a steady flow of business. As others have commented, calling ahead is well worth it, everything is made to order so I had about a 15min wait on my food... but it was worth it. The burger was thick and juicy, the bacon was just right and it was topped with lettuce, cheese, and tomatoes, ketchup and mayo (i think). The only downfall is the drink selection, no fountain drinks, so drink are a little expensive... $2 for a bottle of James lemonade. I will definitely return! read more

I was in the area and used my Yelp app to do a nearby search. I was actually thinking I was going to Jim's Big Burger, but at the Yelp address for JBB is Jim's Diner. Apparently they are the same thing. I went in and the menu consists of a lot of burger variations and a bunch of other sandwiches. I decided to try a single bacon cheeseburger. Considering they offer a triple, you might think the burgers are the thin type. They are not. I would say a single is the equivalent of a quarter pounder. The burger was ok. It came out pretty quick and after tasting it I think it was already cooked and just heated up. The burger was pretty dry. The bacon was good, but tough. The pickles on the burger were amazing! I don't know if they cook up burgers for a lunch rush and being I came during a non-peak time I got left overs or what. Considering the other reviews I was a little shocked. Great food at this east side spot. The burgers are big so think twice before ordering a double...The french fries are great (crinkle cut) and they also are served in a big portion size. Food is cooked to order so be prepared to wait ~10 minutes or so after ordering. They have tater tots too, also great. Some of the best burgers in the entire city, you won't be disappointed. They have really good burgers and I love the fries! My parents love their pork chops and turkey burgers too! Overall I like this place.

Bring your appetite the double bacon cheese is a meal add tots or one of the other sides and you'll be stuffed unless your idea of a meal is a side of beef. burgers are juicy and flavorful the tots are crispy and plentiful. Great Burgers and Onion Rings. A double cheeseburger is more than enough for a hungry person. It was $13 for a double cheeseburger with rings, so that is pretty steep, but they do it right. No seating to eat your meal, it is carryout only. Also, you would probably be well served to call it in before you go. Mine took about 15 minutes to prepare, and it wasn't very busy. best burgers in town! I tackled the 3 patty, 3 lb bacon cheeseburger. Holy wow, most juicy, lean, flavorful burger ive ever bitten into! The toppings were fresh, the bacon crisp, the meat not greasy at all. I also have tried their fried pork chops and mac and cheese. You haven't lived till youve tried a fried pork chop, people. The meat itself was tender and lean, and the breading David (the owner) uses stayed crunchy and held to the chop till the last bite. And the mac and cheese? wow. Reminds me of the stuff a southern momma would make. The place is also amazingly clean and the staff friendly! My only complaint: it's take-out only. and usually packed (a good thing!) so expect to take your food home, or snarf it in the parking lot like i usually do. read more

OMCC!!! I still love the Double Cheeseburger! Fabulous but let me give you something NEW if you have never been to Jim's Diner. I decided I wanted Jim's Famous Nachos!!! It was beyond fabulous! It has Nacho Tostitos, chili, cheese and the lady asked if I wanted jalapenos. The bus driver kept sniffing the food from where I sat with my walker. It didn't take long to get home. The Nachos were so delicious and wonderful! The lady asked me what cake would I want. I did ask if that was for a cake and yes it was! My nachos were beyond best! I want another soon! The cake was so wonderful. I think I died Friday. I know I did and came back! For those who THINK they are afraid of Prospect, CUT IT OUT! I go out and wait for the bus in the dark and I am white! Just tried Jim's off of a co workers recommendation. When I got there the cashier informed me the debit card machine is down, so I was leaving because I don't carry cash. The cook/owner came to the window and asked me what do I want to order everything is on him (free). Sorry the machine is down. So I ordered 3 burgers, cheddar bacon tots.
