I had a great stay. The motel is no frills and unfussy but offers everything you need for a casual vacation: a clean, comfy room, a kitchen with staples, and self check in, which I prefer. My husband and I booked a last-minute trip to Maine for the 4th of July weekend. We wanted to travel to different parts of Maine that we haven't been to, and I stumbled across Camden. The Towne motel had great reviews and lucky for us we were able to book 2 nights there for the 4th! The room was cozy and perfect for the two of us. We were located on the first floor, and our parking spot was right outside our door. It was quiet and comfortable. In the morning the hosts provided homemade breakfast. It was so cute! We were fortunate enough to try the peach/plum pie, lemon cake loaf, and yogurt and granola. It was so good! The two women running the show were friendly and helpful and gave us plenty of recommendations for things to do in the area and what restaurants to try. We were just minutes away walking downtown, which was clutch! Yes, there is parking in the downtown, but it fills up quickly during peak hours so the location was amazing. We stayed one night, on a whim and last minute on 7/2. We got a sweet, nautical decorated double queen room. Clean and neat on ground floor. Although you could hear the street traffic with the door open (there was a screen door too!). Closed it was quiet as could be. We met one of the proprietors upon check in that gave us a map and general overview of the area. She told us they offered a continental breakfast and to enter behind the front desk. From the looks of it, we were invited into their home the next morning! Assorted coffee/tea and homemade muffins and breakfast breads. Delicious! As we only spent one night so pretty much in and out but I loved the little bit of throwback to a simple time with an actual room key on a plastic tag, and office and front desk with a person with a vested interest in the place and a homey feeling that added so much to our Maine coastal vacation. Our home away from home. This find in Camden sits up the hill a short walk down town and all the shops and restaurants! The rooms are clean and the property is well kept. We have been staying here for many many years now and just love it! We would highly recommend a stay where it's very affordable....making the dining out (which can get pricey) less of an issue. We recently returned from a stay at the Towne Motel and I thought it was time to update my original review particularly since there are new owners since 2012 when I first wrote. Let me start by saying, I still recommend this place. It remains quite affordable and clean. The updated rooms look quite nice. And for us, the best part is that you can walk to downtown Camden and just leave your car in the parking lot. I demoted the motel one star because there are a couple of things that need fixing. These things would not dissuade us at all from returning however and in no way do I want this review to detract from those who might be considering a stay here. I think most would be happy here. The first thing which is kind of minor but I think worth mentioning is that when I called to make the reservation the owner who is not Katja (I never got her name) answered. She was sure to mention to me that I was calling "in the middle of breakfast service". Indeed, I called at 8:20am on a weekday. Although this owner was perfectly nice otherwise, this comment stung as I felt I had called at the wrong time. So I said, "I am happy to call back". She said, no this was fine. So why mention that I am calling during "breakfast service"? I momentarily felt stung by my apparent "error" in timing. There is nothing mentioned on the website about when to call or not call. This is just a reminder to business owners that even offhand, casual remarks can make customers feel badly. I would think an owner would feel thrilled that someone is calling to secure a paying reservation. We stayed in Room 16 on this visit which we had never been in. It is a room over the main house of the motel. It was a lovely, large room with a king size bed and 3 windows which provide some excellent light into the room. However one of the issues is that there is a shade on only one of the windows. Why aren't there shades on all the windows? The window facing the street especially needs a shade as without one at night the street light shines into the room and the sheer curtains do nothing to lessen the glare. We hung a towel over the rod. It also looks unfinished not to have shades on all the windows. The shower stall in this room is tight and while there is nothing to be done about that problem, the issue for me at 5'6" tall was that there was no way to take a shower without the water hitting me full-on in the face. The nozzle on the shower head doesn't move so I was unable to avert the water flow from my face. Annoying. If you are not planning on washing your hair, bring your own shower cap because there is no way not to get your hair wet in this scenario. I like that the motel uses wall-mounted soap dispensers. However I was unable to get much soap out of the dispenser (I didn't use the shampoo or conditioner dispensers as I brought my own, so don't know about those). Either the soap dispenser was empty or not working properly...it was too dark in there to tell. I did have my own soap with me so I just used that but still. Similarly, the tissues ran out on our last night there. It seems to me that the person who cleans the room should be checking for these things. There was an extra roll of toilet paper provided, why not an extra box of tissues? This was not an issue for me but my husband who was trying each morning to get a tiny bit of work done on his iPad found that the Wifi kept bugging out. He recalls this has been an issue at Towne Motel for years so predates these currant owners as well. Perhaps this is a router issue that can be readily addressed. The desk in the room has nary a sheet of paper or a pen. This would be a simple fix and a nice touch. When I leave a tip for the person who cleans the room, I like to leave a little thank you note. Nothing like having to dig through my purse to try to find both a pen and a piece of paper. A simple pen and pad on the desk would be welcome. Towne Motel still offers a complimentary continental breakfast each morning which is wonderful. From 7:30am to 9:30am you can get coffee (it was good!) and an assortment of baked goods. We appreciated this and everything was great. There is also a Keurig in the room with coffee pods and creamer. There is also a small refrigerator in the room. We were grateful for these touches. I want to give a shout-out to Katja who welcomed us warmly when we arrived. She mentioned that it was the weekend of the Camden Sailing Regatta. When I mentioned that my husband would be thrilled with this because he is a sailor, Katja took the time to photocopy the details of the regatta for us...unasked! Thank you! We would be happy to return to Towne Motel next time we go to Camden if we are staying for a couple of days. When we stay longer we tend to rent a house. Overall, this is a fine establishment. I still recommend the Towne Motel but hope that the few mostly minor things I've mentioned can be rectified. read more

Not sure why others have given this motel such positive reviews except maybe for the location walking distance to town. Maybe just the room we got (peeling paint, faulty shower head, soap dispensers that refuse to dispense anything, older and cheaper furnishings) and timing as the two owners were in terrible moods. They originally agreed to a 2pm check in then changed their mind and required that we wait until 3pm which forced me to reschedule a work zoom call scheduled to start at 3pm. It is at best a 2.5 star motel by appearance that possibly deserves a 3 star rating if they fix the shower and change their attitude toward guests. We disliked it so much, we left after one night despite paying for a second night which they would not refund. Be warned. read more

This was the perfect place to spend the night in Camden. You could tell it was a Motel from the mid century but the room had been renovated to today's standards with quaint little details. The bed was incredibly comfortable and the ceiling fan kept the room cool. It was also an easy walk to downtown. Over all very enjoyable and a perfect spot to spend the night. read more

Just a heads up, the owners of Towne Motel take their cancelation policy very seriously. I developed Covid while on one of the tall ships and had to cancel my two night stay. Although I gave them a four day notice, it wasn't the required week posted in their confirmation info. They were able to rent one night but I still had a hefty charge for the other night over a weekend for a situation beyond my control. No leeway or discussion of partial refund. Sounds like a lovely place but make sure you read the small print before you book. Hard to rate since I never stayed but I always hope that when circumstances develop over which a customer has no control, some consideration is provided by the owner(s). Owners were extremely friendly and welcoming, and the interior of the motel was tastefully designed and decorated with quaint little details. Home cooking breakfast was delicious (during our stay, it was home made caramelized pears, blueberry cornmeal cake, and maple syrup drizzled baked oatmeal with cranberries). As others have said, this is a fine motel, conveniently located just a few minute's walk from town. The beds were super comfortable and the black out curtains meant I slept until 9:30! A rarity. I cannot recommend this motel enough. We usually spend a night in Camden on our way to Bar Harbor during Memorial and Labor Day weekends, and this motel has been our "go-to" spot when staying in Camden. We have stayed here four times now. You can easily book a room through their website, and if you book with a bit of advance notice, you can even select the room you would like. The rooms have always been clean and the owners have been as friendly as it gets. The first couple times I stayed here I arrived after the office closed. The owner/employee personally called me to make arrangements of where the key would be left and to give me details/instructions about the motel. The last two times we met her in person upon check-in and she is just an all around friendly and helpful person. Camden is an incredibly charming little town and this motel perfectly suits it. The motel is within walking distance from everything you would want to visit in town from the shops to the restaurants to any event that happens to be going on at the time. If you are thinking about staying in Camden for a night or multiple nights, definitely consider staying here. The room rates have also been very reasonable to us each time we stayed. read more

A friend of mine was considering visiting the midcoast area, so I dropped by this motel when I was in Camden. After asking about pricing, I asked if I could see a room. The clerk tried to convince me that hotels don't do that and that customers relied on online photos instead. Now, my mother was in the hotel business, so I know that's not the case and that customers will want to see even higher-end rooms for any number of reasons: just to see if they like the accommodations, to check for potential hazards for kids/pets/the elderly, to see if they want to upgrade/downgrade - well, I don't need to explain to *you*; you're reading a Yelp hotel review. (My mother always insisted on doing this ourselves whenever we traveled, and it saved us a ton of trouble on occasion.) When I said that wasn't my experience and that I would indeed like to see a room if I could, the clerk ad-libbed that all the rooms were booked, but maybe I could come back later in the week. There were two cars in the lot, and I recalled the sign said there was vacancy, but I chalked it up to COVID precautions and left. When I came back to ask about doubles rates, the clerk was angry and standoffish. Guessing (correctly) that it was due to the "can I look at a room" thing, I started to explain (thinking maybe they'd taken over the hotel recently) that it wasn't meant as an insult and was actually a routine request in the business. The clerk reacted as any reasonable, level-headed individual: she started freaking out about how she didn't want me here, that I was WEIRD, that anyone who wanted to SEE a room was too WEIRD to allow in the hotel. There was impressive, Norman Bates-esque rage behind it, too; the only reason she didn't try to take after me with a butcher knife was, I imagine, sheer lack of preparedness. On one hand: that reaction is HONESTLY HILARIOUS. (In hindsight, I mean. The butcher-knife stuff can be disconcerting in the moment if you're not used to dealing with suspect characters, say, from your family helping run a hotel.) On the other hand, drawing on family hotel biz experience again: hotel staff panicking and refusing to show customers rooms before purchase can mean a number of things. NONE OF THEM ARE REMOTELY GOOD. Camden's a nice town, with plenty of other accommodations downtown. Don't ruin your stay by dealing with shady, unstable...*weirdos.* read more

I can't begin to say how disappointed I was with the owners of this establishment. I was part of a group of 10 adults. The owners were rude and disrespectful to all of us. They can't accommodate groups. they wanted no talking. No gathering ( although we are all vaccinated and have spent this entire Covid together). Which is none of their business. They booked our group knowing how many were coming. We were accused of drinking and being loud and rowdy. Have to laugh. I was in bed at 7:30pm. Be warned. They can't seat more than 6 for breakfast. we were not welcome there. Ended up leaving two days early. read more

I was so pleased with the place and Katja's service my first day and then, I had a similar experience Alexandra S and Marissa M had. I'm pretty sure it was the same woman they talked to. I lost my key which I think any motel/hotel should be prepared to handle. It was 7:30pm and I rang the bell and she came out and the first thing she said is something about it not being good timing because they're about to go to dinner (the office was open, mind you). I told her I lost my key and she proceeded to question whether I really looked for it. When I said I lost it in my car and was looking (I looked for a long time!) but it's dark out she said, "do you have a light in your car?". She looked in their closet for another key and first said, "no we don't have one" at which point I thought I would have to just sit outside all night?? But she then found a ziploc bag full of keys and found the one that would go to my room. I was so relieved but put off when she then she said, "do me a favor" - find the other key and tomorrow and bring back both. Wow, I'm sorry but when you are in the hospitality business, please know what customer service means. I'm so disappointed because I need to come back to Camden a lot in the coming years because of my mom being near here and my son now in college at UMaine. I was going to skip this and just let the experience go. However after receiving all of the correspondence from the owner I rate this place a 1-2.(I only give it a potential 2 because they have a pool that I was unable to use and the doors did lock - low standards). The owner is VERY unprofessional and unforgiving. Especially during this time one would think people could be kind and understanding. The beds are very hard. Very. I could not get comfortable. The bathroom smelled very musty and moldy - I had to open the window that was initially stuck shut and keep it open the entire stay. The towels smelled like they had been hanging there for weeks untouched and not cleaned. The internet did not work the entire weekend and the numbers to call did not work. They charge $155 for a room that's barely worth $90 - and that's only because it had a sink and mini-fridge. For a small town motel it is way overpriced, not clean, and has an unprofessional owner. read more

We had an emergency and needed last minute lodging with a service animal. We called ahead and then ended up walking up to see about accommodations. They were so helpful and understanding and worked with us. We stayed for one night, and ended up asking the next morning for recommendations for a taxi service. The ladies gave us many options, even going as far as to offer to take us themselves. We found a ride and checked out, but ended up having to stay outside and wait longer than anticipated. They even offered to let us back into our room to wait despite already checking out.Hospitality and price are unbeatable at the Towne Motel. If we ever come back to Camden we are staying here! This motel is the best ! We always stay in Room 18....the Pet Suite. Talk about "pet friendly "! The room is above what was a garage, away from other guests. Away from the road. Nice and quiet. The room has an apartment sized fridge and stove, microwave and Keurig, sink and fully equipped kitchen supplies. The bed is covered in a cute pet-themed sheet ("We know your pet wants to be on the bed with you ."). There are also two doggie beds for our dog, a bowl for food and one for water, a box of treats on the kitchen table, and a basket of towels on the stairs for rainy nights, like tonight. It is clean, comfortable, and welcoming. We are repeat visitors. read more

The Towne Motel was very clean & what a great location! Walking distance to everything, yet just outside the hustle bustle of town. The hotel itself doesn't deserve this low of a rating, it's how my family & I were treated that was the only downside. My mom takes my sister & I on a family vacation every year, I am 30 years old, & it is the only vacation I take all year / my only time off from work & time to spend with my family. This year we chose Maine, & spent each night in a different place in Maine. Camden was one of our stops & my mom booked the hotel online. We arrived right at check in time around 3:00/3:30, but no one was there yet. Okay, no problem! So we drove around town & checked the adorable down town out. When we returned we checked in & everything was great! Room was clean & the beds were comfortable. We walked around town, came back to get ready for dinner, and left for dinner. We walked back from downtown & proceeded to go up to our room. But the key wasn't opening our room. So after 10 mins of trying to open the door we called the number to get in touch with the motel. A woman answered & made us feel really bad about the key not working, she said she was just about to give her father dinner, she had already made a trip down to the motel once tonight, & she'll be there in about 10 mins because she lives a few towns away. She arrived & came up to help us, she had tried to open the lock with 3 different keys, sprayed WD-40, and then turned to us & asked us if anyone pushed the button on the back of the door / read the sign to not push the button in on the door knob. We did not push a button & there was no sign anywhere saying not to push the button on the door. From there she called Katja on the portable phone. She explained the situation & continued to stress the button on the back of the door & how now a locksmith will have to come...by now it's been at least 30 mins. She left a few times to get better reception on the cordless phone she was on, just as we were about to give up one of the other guests walked by & said he's a maintenance man & to let him give it a try. He kneeled down & opened the door on his second try! What a fiasco. But more importantly a situation that could have been handled completely differently, instead we felt like we were bothering this woman, who was very frazzled & didn't seem to believe us when we said we didn't touch the button. Finally we were able to settle in & rest up to carry on with our vacation. read more

We stayed here at the recommendation of a local person we met on a walk. It's an older place only 3 blocks from downtown. The rooms are very large and clean. Operated by a friendly couple very knowledgable about the area. However, we called a couple of times and got no answer, including one time before they closed to ask a question about the amenities. No answer and message on answering machine wasn't returned, and they weren't that busy. Just keep calling. But we had no complaints. Price was reasonable. Breakfast was complimentary pastry that tasted made fresh that morning. read more
