Never has there been a more wonderful toy-store community! I love teaching the our kiddos to recycle the toys they don't play with anymore-- accruing credit to get new ones. The owners are so thoughtful, lighthearted and helpful when buying birthday gifts. We live in Oakland and the drive is always worth it to Toy-Go-Round. They really know all the games, legos and yes, video games. They've helped us fix and replace parts--you name it! What a local gem. And no Amazon often wasteful packaging. This place has a really lovely selection of toys, but buyer beware: Check the prices online for the new version of an item before purchasing anything. I bought a used toy, only to go online the next day and find it was selling for less brand new at Target, Walgreens and Wal-Mart. I called the next day to ask if I could return it or get a price reduction, and the owner was unwilling to do anything to remedy the situation. She said I should have checked prices online before buying it. read more

Like one of the reviewers below, we were treated rudely by the employee with grayish black hair and spectacles. I had a purchase that came to $9, but being end of day was out of cash, with two very hungry little kids (2 and 4) whom I needed to get home (I'd promised them we could pick up the bath toys my older daughter liked). Despite the fact that we've spend hundreds of dollars here over the past few years, the employee grumpily told me that I had to spend $10 for a credit card purchase, and that $9 wouldn't cut it. I had my hands full with the kids and told her we're in a hurry because the kids are hungry, but have spent lots of money here and will continue in the future if she helps us out here. She just barked back at us, "sorry, owner's policy." She didn't suggest anything, or otherwise even try to be helpful. My daughters were on the edge of hunger meltdown so we had to run, but were very upset and confused about why we couldn't get the bath toys. I told her that if she's going to be this inflexible and I leave without the toys, I'm never coming back. She said that was fine with her. Wow - nice customer service... This employee belongs in a funeral parlor (or perhaps a post office), not a toy store! I do my best to support local businesses, but not when they treat long-time customers so rudely. Note to owner: from the reviews below, it seems like we are not the only customers who this employee has treated rudely. Your other employees have been very nice in the past. Okay, this is going to be my most biased review... I worked at Toy Go Round all through college and some time after. This store has the best used children's book collection you will ever find. The books are half off their original cover price and if you are dilligent you can find almost anything. The used toys are careful checked over by the employees and if you are jonesing for that Fisher Price Farm that your parents tossed, TGR is the place to find it and it will be as close to complete as anything you get off of ebay. I still shop there and recently found a great collectiable Star Trek gift set for one of my hard-to-shop-for co-workers. I can't say enough good things about this place. I went to a toy store in SF a couple of days ago. Everything was ridiculously precious. I was terrified my 2 year old wold break something. It was actually stressful! Then, we went to charming Solano Avenue and found this toy store. It's hands-down the best toy store I've ever discovered. They have EVERYTHING from cool modern dollhouses, to vintage dolls, and legos. I loved it. My daughter loved it and it wasn't the least bit precious. This is a toy store for kids and adults. We love Toy Go Round! I absolutely love being able to find things for my daughter that are unusual, unique, hard to find, no longer made, etc. We have found so many great treasures here. We also take toys and books in to be consigned and have gotten a lot of money in return. I always, always find a "treasure" when I go in there, and the search is so fun, because this place is PACKED full of stuff. I have been on the hunt for a particular, no-longer-produced toy for my daughter for a while and finally found it here the other day -- so exciting! My daughter was suddenly into maps and globes, and I wanted to get her the interactive Leap Frog globe, but the one I wanted was no longer made. I said to my husband "Toy Go Round!" Sure enough, they had it. Such a great place for finding things like that. read more

Their prices for used toys are about the same as new toys from ToysRus. A few items are even slightly higher. You really need to know what the toy's new price is before buying it. You also need to be aware of the store's "implied" policy if you plan to bring used toys for them to sell with you. First, they took in your used toys WITHOUT giving you an itemized receipt, it is all up to their bookkeeping and conscience, if you ever receive a few dollars from them after your used toys being sold. Secondly, they do NOT return any of your unsold toys back to you. Whatever you bring in to them is like dumping into the black hole. Worst, none of this is expressed in writing. . read more

I love love love this store. It is run by such a sweet family and has awesome toys. We have been coming regularly for years and my kids run into the store and play with all of their toys. They are incredibly kind and gracious (not to mention patient) about all of the messes that we make. I really like the fact that we can bring stuff that the kids never play with to sell on consignment, and then we are able to build credit to buy things that they actually will use. I am surprised by the negative reviews as my son & I have loved this place for years. Their back shelves of board games hold some gems I can't find otherwise while gently used feels much better for my soul and the environment. They do an outstanding job of making sure all the pieces are in recycled games, art books, etc. - even when there's a gazillion parts. Not sure how they do it! There's so much on the shelves, I can take time to find quality gifts while my son entertains himself. I have not tried working with them to sell our gently used games and wonder if the negative fdbk is mainly about that relationship for otherwise, I find time and time again Toy Go Round is a true treasure trove. I wish I could as easily and conveniently find these kind of possibilities for other gently used children's items such as sports equipment. read more

What's more the lady even helped me by suggesting a couple of consignment shops and the gentleman answered all of my questions and helped me look for a couple of books. Went to TGR for the first time today. Love it. Easy way to buy local and go green. They took most of my girls' toys that I brought in and were efficient without being curt. Great selection and everything is clean and organized. Will definitely be doing most if not all of my birthday and xmas shopping at TGR. I have been a customer of this wonderful store for 21 years. All 3 of my children, now ages 10-21, have enjoyed buying toys and later re-selling them here. I'm continually surprised at the horrible customer service they offer. I agree with the other reviews, that they are unhelpful, grumpy and generally don't seem to actually like people or kids. They seem to not want my children there and I just called to get my balance on my account and they told me I needed to come by in person ... why?! Doesn't it take the same time to look it up whether I'm there or not? If this was the only thing, I'd overlook it but they are ALWAYS cranky and unfriendly in every interaction I've had with them. I recommend going to 5 Little Monkeys or even Target to get your toys. read more

We've been going here for years, but after a recent very negative experience, I'm not sure we'll be back due to poor customer service. We have sold my son's toys back here for years, and the store credit has been my son's to use for occasional treats. This time, I stopped in, picked out a few things, and asked about my balance. I was told that I had almost $100 of EXPIRED credit. I wasn't even aware that store credit could expire, and neither did any of the other customers I talked to afterwards. There is no sign posted about this. I've asked for my balance many times, and no one has ever mentioned anything about this. The manager refused to give me any of my son's credit back. He was rude and totally inflexible. People like this just shouldn't be working in customer service, especially around kids. Really too bad. read more

I used to like this place and maybe because they have gotten busier over the last decade the whole process is inconvenient unless you don't care how much you may get from your used items, they don't give estimates from the get go. If you have time to go into the store and check to see if the items have sold because they will not call you. Lastly, unless you if you live close by so you can go in person to check in on your account. Not only on top of that, when you do come in, they treat you like you are wasting their time. I tried to get items back and was told I would have to pay them a certain %. CRAZY!! Not for me...would not recommend. eBay or craigslist maybe the better the option or different store of course. read more

This family-owned business is my favorite toy store. They're small and don't have tons and tons of stock like Toys R Us, but they are still far and away my fave. Why? The staff are super-friendly and helpful, it's a family-owned, local business, and its main stock consists of a fantastic selection of used toys. What does that mean to a huge geek like myself? COLLECTIBLES. And not just any collectibles but assloads of collectibles at very reasonable prices. Hmmm. Perhaps I shouldn't be posting this online and keep this secret to myself. They stock lots of new toys as well, and their book selection is excellent-- far better than TRU. Every Tuesday is discount book day! Between the reasonably-priced collectibles, dirt-cheap used toys, great selection of new toys, stellar and cheap used videos and DVDs, and huge book selection (new and used) you simply will not leave there without finding something you or someone you know will love. I called and asked if they had a particular item. The guy on the phone listed what they had by brand, and gave their prices. He didn't even need to put me on hold to do this. I went down, saw the items, picked what I wanted (which was rather large). The guy who works there picked it up and put it in my car and away I went! Easy peasy...and I'll be back! read more

Am very supportive of the idea of this store--recycling toys make so much sense! Just think of the enormous amount of packaging that is spared! I actually bought a weird toy there for my son for 5 bucks that I later sold on ebay for $300. I've also brought back countless new and used toys for resale and have just been happy to pass them on rather than delegate them to the dumpster. Amazing selection of both used and new toys, games, costumes, sporting goods, books etc. And everything is in excellent condition. There's always an excellent selection of used toys in good condition here. When I've been in, the store's been staffed with nice young people. One thing you should know is they are closed for most of January, so call before you run there at the last minute on your way to a January birthday party, or you will be adding in an unplanned detour to Five Little Monkeys down the street. read more

As they got older, we shopped for Legos, Groovy Girl dolls, and books. Now it's our go to store for puzzles and games. Go somewhere else! I have bought many toys here in the past, but won't be coming back until I actually get paid for the toys they sold for me. I lost the check they had given me (my fault), but I found it 6 months later and tried to cash it. It was returned by the bank as being (just) too old to cash; I went back to Toy-Go-Round, explained what had had happened, expecting that they would just reissue the check. I was told that she would have to check with her bookkeeper but that she would get back to me within a few days. Crickets for six weeks... So I went back in today to find out, and got a shrug and a, "sorry, last year's books are closed, nothing we can do." I have never heard of a business or an individual refusing to reissue a lost check for money owed within the last calendar year, but that apparently is their policy. I'll consider taking this review down if they issue a check, an apology, and a change in their policy. read more
