This place has the best street tacos in the St. Louis area and the tostadas are fantastic as well. To top it off, two of us eat for less than $10. Although they don't have any liquor or beer, the server told me "if I can't see what's in the cup, then I don't know what's in the cup." Went for lunch on a Saturday. The service was very prompt, the food was plentiful and well prepared. I had the carne asada which was delicious - perhaps a little over-cooked, with generous sides of rice, beans, lettuce, avocado and tomatoes. My dining companions had a vegetarian burrito and the cheese quesadilla. Both were very good and contained more than enough food for a main meal. Very authentic. Good selection. The restaurant is not very accessible if you're going north on 94. You basically have to go down a quarter mile past the joint then double back in order to get there but it's worth the hassle to me! Food was ok. Bad service and sneaking pricing. I was told that the burrito had rice and beans in it. I asked for the rice and beans to be placed outside the burrito on the plate. When the burrito was brought to the table there were no rice and beans. I asked for the rice and beans and the waitress said that she would bring some out-- they never arrived until the end of I was done eating. First, I'll say that this is the only review I have ever written in my life. That's because I've never been so upset after a dinner, and felt obligated to not let others make the same mistake as I did. I created this account just to rip this restaurant. I'm also very easily pleased and not one to complain about things like this, but after tonight I'm pretty upset. My girlfriend and I went there tonight because we had a $10 off coupon to use. We walk in and it looked trashy from the beginning. Not a big deal. We get a waitress and try to order coke. They said they didn't have any. Not a big deal, we just got water instead. Not a big deal until the table that came in after us sat down and ordered coke and got it no problem. That's when I noticed that every other table had a basket of chips and salsa. We never got any. Other tables got served 2-3 times with fresh chips and salsa. We got ignored. We got our food which wasn't horrible but not what we expected. The issue wasn't with the food. We never got one refill on our waters, no service at all during the whole meal, not even to stop by and ask us if everything was okay. I hate to go this route, but when a shoe fits, I'll wear it. We were the only white people in the whole restaurant. Everyone else was Hispanic. We sure didn't feel welcomed by any means. Never going back. read more

I travel a lot and usually end up at a local Mexican restaurant - sometimes I get lucky and find a good spot to come back to - other times, not so much. I yelped Mexican food and found this gem of a place. The taco sauce- both green and red - are very unique and excellent. The first thing I ordered was a steak taco made with homemade corn tortilla. I devoured it and enjoyed every bite. Next came my Chorizo Burrito and will say it's the best that I have tasted. I must say, the entire experience was very authentic to the all Spanish speaking TV, to my waitress who didn't speak much English but that was all good. She was very pleasant. The salsa, chips, beans and rice sub par and i wasn't in love with the non service of beer. My hubs did like his burrito but felt it was missing something. This place is probably 4 or even 3.5 starts. But the fact is that it is placed in a sea of 1 star chain restaurants so it earns my praises. I actually think they make a pretty fine taco al pastor. The Chorizo had a little bit of gristle in it but the flavor was great. Not enough to bother me. Very cheap at $1.25 a taco. The salsa is pretty spicy compared to what you would expect from a Mexican restaurant in St. Louis. Horchata was yummy too but I'd never had it before so I have nothing to compare it to. Honestly, give me TWO corn tortillas on a taco, some grilled meat, and no fajitas or enchiladas lunch special on the menu and I'm good to go. The only reason for losing a star is they don't have a/c as I can tell, and their service is hit or miss. But my husband and I go here at least 2-4 times a month, if not more. Parking was a challenge. Service was horrible. The place was not clean. The restroom should be declared a health hazard and the food was okay. No tea, expensive soda only out of a bottle. Okay, I agonized over giving two stars because the food was good overall. It's a taqueria and the tacos were very good, and the tortillas are hand made, so by that metric it's five stars. Also, to be fair, they've got a few things on the menu that you won't find elsewhere, like sopes and horchata. But the rice that came with them wasn't good (beans were okay, but it's hard to mess up beans), the dining area was uncomfortably warm (in March somehow), the menu is vague (there are pictures, but let's not pretend that every place is really photographing their actual food for menus), they got my order impressively wrong, and they don't give you chips, at least not with carry out orders. I know it's dumb to whine over not getting free chips, but look, this is the only Mexican restaurant I've ever been to that doesn't give me chips. I have certain expectations. I have needs. El Maguey has spoiled me and I love them for it. Side note, can't help noticing how often people are calling this place "authentic" and boy is that a lot to unpack. Don't tell me it doesn't make you uncomfortable when a bunch of white people call a little hole in the wall taqueria "authentic." It makes me uncomfortable and I'm whiter than mayonnaise. One guy even says that the lack of air conditioning made it feel "more authentic." What does that mean? Because Mexico is hot, so a Mexican restaurant should be hot? I found this looking for a good margarita. Well they don't serve alcohol and the place is like a small diner, BUT the food I had was AWESOME. They serve you guacamole and chips and later brought me some red sauce that seemed like one of the mole sauces I've had other places. I just has the spicy pork tacos, but they were great. This place should cater business lunches to local businesses. Did I mention that the Prices are very low. Skip the Taco Bell and get some REAL Mexican food. I lived in northern California for 5 years. This is hands down the best Tauqeria that I've been to, Nor-Cal or otherwise. No one here speaks English. That's a good sign. Salsa is hot--there is no mild version. Carnitas are poached in lard, and al pastor is on a spit. This place is not for Gringos, at least most--and thats how you know it is good. read more

I've been craving street carne asada tacos and was so happy to find such an authentic place so close to my apartment! However I am greatly disappointed... The hours on Yelp said they were open from 9am-9pm and the open sign in the window was lit up so I walked in at 10:05am and the waitress was just setting up the tables and asked if I was ordering to go or dining in the restaurant because they weren't "open" yet. I said I had planned on dining in and at 10:15am they just fired up the grill. My order was basic just some carne asada tacos and sopes. The food was just mediocre the meat was dry and flavorless. I like it when the meat is just and tender and dripping with a little bit of grease from the grill. The environment overall was kind of dirty and the restroom had no toilet paper! I had been trying to avoid the restroom based off of other Yelp reviews, however I ended up having to make an emergency trip in there. I am fairly certain I may have gotten food poisoning from this place so sadly I will probably not be returning. :( read more

I read the reviews and it sounded awesome. So we visited tonight and it was far from what we expected. I understand that it's a dive, I understand that it's semi self serv; but the food is just barely 'ok'. The waitress spoke some English and was very nice; although she forgot 1/2 our food. The burrito was almost cold and looked to be a mix of pureed cheese, chicken, and rice. The tacos were filled with an abundance of dry and fairly bland steak bits and sprinkled with raw onions and cilantro. My wife got steak and shrimp fajitas. The shrimp still had the tails attached and were overcooked. The sour cream looked old and yellowed ( my wife tried it and stopped immediately for fear of food poisoning). Finally, the chips and salsa that came first. These chips were the standard 'homemade' chips from this type of establishment but the salsa was brown, really salty and tasted old. The green dip was like a mix of guacamole and salsa Verde but was neither the right color or consistentcy of either. It was milk thin and very spicy. Both dips were overly salty. I really hope this review helps. There are a few good Mexican joints in saint Charles and this isn't one of them. Try El Agave on 3rd Street or La Caretta down on harvester. read more

The first time I was here, it took a long time to get a table even though there was only one other party in the restaurant, granted it was a large party of about 8 or so with only one server on the floor so it was understandable. Table was dirty, condiment bottles were dirty, crusty and empty, and we didn't get waters for 5 minutes and menus for probably another 5 minutes. Wasn't super impressed by the food, I had a chicken burrito with the absolute minimal amount of chicken in it for it to be able to pass as a chicken burrito. My boyfriend and I decided to come back a few weeks later. When I went to the bathroom, it looked like it hadn't been cleaned in at least 4-5 days, maybe longer depending on how business is. Piss and pubes all over the toilet seat, piss all over the floor, the trash can was completely full and had toilet paper with poop on it filling over the top. Hot water was nonexistent and there weren't any paper towels, so I can only hope they have a different sink in this building.. Two stars because it's edible food with an authentic feel to it, even though there's only a handful of food options to choose from. It was nice to venture out from the typical Mexican menu that's offered everywhere, but I'll be going to El Maguey next time. read more

I live right down the road from this joint and have passed by it a "million" times saying to myself and whoever is in the car with me that I need to check this place out. Historically, I have always seeked out out of the way Mom's and Pop's Mexican food joints everywhere from El Paso, to Phoenix, Denver, you name it. I have always found that those are the best, most authentic places to eat, and usually cheaper too. Well I finally stopped in last night about a half hour before closing(9 PM). After some late Sunday evening shopping, we were hungry and didn't feel like cooking when we got home, so I stopped in here to grab something quick, to go. You know, just to sample their food really. Anyway, the place was very "casual," as I expected, but actually pretty darn neat and clean, overall, considering this is just a hole in the wall, if you know what I mean. So, I was impressed already. There were only a few patrons there, all of hispanic background and speaking spanish. Everyone seemed quiet and considerate. That, along with the Mexican Television playing in the corner, in my opinion, only added to the "authenticity" of the place. So far, so good. I then went up the small ordering window and simply ordered Ten(10) Steak Tacos with "everything," which included onions, cilantro and both green and red sauce and lime wedges on the side. It was freshly made and piping hot, wrapped in two seperate tin foils. They were only $1.35 each, which I thought was very reasonable considering that I wasn't ordering "Taco Hell" fake Mexican food. We got home and devoured those bad boys... and loved them! YU-U-M-MY! I'll be going back soon to enjoy some sit down dining so I can take advantage of the fresh help yourself salsa and hopefully some fresh tortilla chips, which quite frankly with about 3-4 tacos is a meal for me. I don't speak spanish and not very up on "Authentic" Mexican Cousine, however, I got the impression that this was certainly the place to find it! Unless you're a picky person and/or used to a fine dining-type atmosphere or have a sensative bowel like at least one reviewer here apparently has, I think you'll be satisfied overall, if not as excited as I am. The men's bathroom looked disgusting. Could not believe my eyes. There was cockroaches near our booth. Could not believe this has passed health inspection. Service was bad, Food was not quality and made me question if I was going to get sick from eating it. I can't imagine what the kitchen looked like. St. Charles County be advised! read more
