    Quesabirra tacos
    Emily K.

This place is a small little hole in the wall. My husband and I stopped by on a Tuesday for dinner. It was practically empty so we got to sit anywhere. I got 3 tacos. Beef, pork and chicken all were very good and had the traditional onion and cilantro on top. My husband got the quesabirra tacos. They were so good as well as the dipping sauce! We will be coming back!

Authentic Mexican flavors which means it's different than most other Mexican restaurants found in the Midwest. For starters, they bring out 2 bowls of sauce/salsa different than anything I remember tasting. Full of flavor (and the red one is full of heat). We added a guacamole which was clearly freshly made and was fantastic. The waitress recommended the tacos and the tradition fajitas. Both were excellent! I liked the steak street taco the best (unusual for me) with the chicken and chorizo also both earning high marks. The fajitas were a very generous portion and very well prepared. The peppers and veggies were well cooked (not underdone) and the whole dish was described as "quite tasty". The music was a little loud, so maybe a spot I wouldn't bring the grandparents and I'm not sure how kid friendly the menu was for spice fearing children. However, for a couple adults it was a fantastic spot for lunch.

Wow. Re-discovering this one after an ownership change and a few years. So good. Mega-traditional menu (name matches huh?). Lots of choices, all looks great. We had tacos, and a quesadilla, plus a kids quesadilla for our mini. The chips arrived and were freshly made in house, along with two bowls of salsa, one of which was "Salsa Chica" and it was delicious, tomato-y and roasted pepper, creamy. Hard to describe but fantastic and unique. The tacos were perfectly proportioned and only$2 each. They were delicious. The quesadilla had great marinated pulled chicken on it was also very tasty. Greasy food, good service, super reasonable prices. Hard to beat combo.

For St. Louis area Mexican, I thought the food was very good. Server was friendly and attentive. We had chicken enchiladas and aguachiles, both were freshly made, large portions, good flavors and fairly priced. The micheladas were very good, too! We will return, soon.

So I have been here several times before and had pretty good food and service. Not today, service was beyond bad, food was over cooked and sloppy. Here us a picture of my kids bean burrito. The waitress asked if she wanted cheese on it (we said yes). Ohhh and we were charged ten bucks for this disaster.

Casa Birria tacos, and a flight of tacos in the back.

This is a hidden gem for sure. The server was incredibly nice. The inside is very clean and has a nice bar. Food was delicious. My daughter said the dessert was the best. If you are near by or driving on 70 please stop by.

Two stars because our server was great. She was knowledgeable about the menu, had a positive attitude, quick service and winning smile. But the rest of our experience was not as good. The fajita meat was tough and not seasoned. Not worth eating. The sauce on the enchiladas had a great flavor but the flavor stopped at the sauce. This place just falls short with tasteless food and sub par ingredients. Even the guacamole was not worth highlighting. Darn.

I love Mexican food particularly street tacos and had been wanting to try this place out for a little bit. My daughters and I got dinner and we were not disappointed. I really enjoyed the street tacos although the shells were a little damp and maybe that had something to do with take out and the condensation in the box. Everything else about the taco was-however delicious. I really enjoyed my shrimp so pay as it was plenty of shrimp on there in the subway was chewy and had great bite and flavor. The chicken gordita was also very tasty although I think I would preferred it with a different kind of meat and the chicken. No knock on the chicken as it was good and there's plenty of meat I just think I would've preferred a different protein flavor My youngest really enjoyed the California burrito as she of course got all the good stuff left off like sour cream cheese in the pico the Gallo but they took care of her and there was plenty of meat and rice and fries. The burrito also was a good size and she couldn't finish all Of it. Last but certainly not least was the torta and it was delicious and I really enjoyed the bread of the sandwich along with all the fresh toppings that go with all good sandwiches. With our order they sent two kinds of sauce one was like a Verde that was creamy with a little spice and the other was a smoky red sauce. Definitely prefer the green. This place is legit and Definitely a step above Tex-Mex style restaurants that so many people take as true Mexican food.

Wow I'll keep this short and to the point! This place had Great service, awesome chips and salsa, cheap menu prices, solid portions, great taste, great variety if you want to try something really authentic Can't go wrong to try this place out if you're in the area.

Do they serve beer or margaritas? I don't see them on the menu.

No they don't; but the tacos are more than worth not having a drink.

However, an incident happened recently that has now complicated my love for them. I ordered two burritos for delivery recently and one ended up being wrong. It was supposed to be a Burrito Americano with shredded chicken, something I've had before. What came had ground beef and no red sauce, so I figured it was an entirely different burrito and called to let them know mine might have been swapped with someone else's. I understood that there was a good chance it wasn't getting replaced because I couldn't drive up to get another one, and yes that ended up being the case, but what got me was the guy on the phone said "oh sorry, on our tablets where we receive orders, we couldn't see that you made a meat selection so we just chose one." I confirmed that wasn't the case on my end. So one, that's crazy. Two, we've ordered from them before and that hasn't been a problem. Three, if that's true, how am I supposed to trust that I'll ever get what I ordered? So I don't know if they're not taking responsibility for their mix up for if they have a new system that's going to cause a lot of issues. But either way, I'm not thrilled and I'm probably done with them.

I gave the shrimp ceviche a try as well--the flavor was on point, however the avocado had seen better days. The shrimp was still a little gray as well. It was a very generous portion though, for one tostada--definitely not complaining! ;) I'm excited to eat my way through this menu--so, so happy to see more authentic cuisines in the Saint Charles area.

It is a bit of a drive for us and I don't see a return visit in the future. Ms T ordered a quesadilla with chicken. The tortilla was dry. The cheese and chicken were skimpy, coming nowhere near the edge of the tortilla and the chicken was just cooked chicken with no seasoning, no salt. My huevos rancheros came with the strangest salsa on them. They were served with a tortilla underneath, which is as they should be, but the sauce was almost clear, like broth thickened with cornstarch. It had a bit of tomato, but no chile and no seasonings. It was what I call wallpaper paste for anyone old enough to know what that is. The refritos and rice were fine, not remarkable. The guacamole was decent, not an onion bomb. I also ordered a side of carnitas, which would have been good had they not been served at room temperature. I asked for corn tortillas and received more of the dry flour tortillas that Ms T had for her quesadilla. The salsa served with the complimentary totopos was the best thing of the meal but that does not warrant a return visit.

Tonite we started with Kevs Dip, tender seasoned ground beef in a cheesy dip (would've liked more cheese) topped with pico de gallo. Enough to share, it was tasty and served with house tortilla chips. I think if you prefer a spicier version, try their Queso Fundido which has house-made Chorizo and fresh Jalapeños in cheese dip - i definitely want to try the Fundido next time. For dinners, we ordered Chori Chicken and a Weldon Spring Burrito. Both were plentiful portions (shareable if not overly hungry) and delicious! The Chori Chicken had house-made Chorizo and grilled onions atop grilled Chicken breast smothered in queso; served with rice, beans, salad and flour tortillas - hits the spot! The Burrito had grilled Ribeye steak, avocado, rice, beans, mushrooms, fajita peppers, cilantro and queso - wow it was a giant and complex burrito but very tasty to eat! Plenty of menu options to try, and perhaps my one surprise was quite limited Pork selections; while they had Al Pastor (marinated) Pork dishes, they did not have any Carnitas type dinner or Enchiladas. My parents eat there on the reg, though not so much the past couple of years, after they implemented their controversial policy of shrinking portion sizes and increasing prices at the same time. Uh, whose idea was that? I have an idea. Let's just say he's not very good at riding a bicycle. I've eaten there literally a million times since it opened up 10 or 15 years ago. Before that, we used to eat at the place in Olivette that was once a Ponderosa, El Paisano or whatever. I don't think they're related, but when that place closed, a handful of employees came over to Carreta's. That was years ago, and they're now long gone. Hopefully, they weren't shipped off to El Salvador. I hear it's not safe there. More recently, we've been eating at a place a bit further west on Olive that was once a Houlihan's. Noticing a trend? Carreta's must be feeling the effects, because they've remodeled and added a few new menu items, some of which will be familiar to Barrel House patrons. The remodel seems to mostly have been a matter of applying a fresh coat of paint and turning the dim switch up to its absolute brightest. It used to be dark in there, like at a fancy restaurant. Now it's like Kmart circa 1986. I didn't check to see if a blue light had been installed in the ceiling, nor did I make it back to near the restrooms to see if they've still got that influencer wall. The menu has been reprinted, and I'm sure they took advantage of the opportunity to jack up prices even further. Many of the old favorites remain, and I'm not sure what, if anything, they removed to make room for the small handful of new items. I saw that they still have the carnitas, my old go-to. It's the only pork item on the menu. If you're familiar with the area, you can probably do the math on that one. Most importantly, they've added Birria, only about 10 years after it became trendy. What's next, a smashburger? A pumpkin spice latte? I've had Birria at a number of places, here in the STL and elsewhere, and in a few different preparations, and it's never not been good. It kinda is the Mexican food equivalent of the smashburger, in that regard. An order of three will run you $16, and it doesn't come with anything other than the consommé and a ramekin of tomatillo salsa. Just the three tacos wasn't the most filling meal I've ever had, but it wasn't half bad, for there not being any sides or anything. They stuff those tacos full with mostly just meat (along with cheese, onions and cilantro), and I'd imagine it's roughly as caloric as eating half the produce aisle at the grocery store. It's so good. I figured it would be kinda mediocre but nevertheless enjoyable, because I thought I had this place pegged, but credit where credit is due. They've exceeded expectations. This was one of the best things I've ever had in a Mexican restaurant. If they don't let the quality slip or try to charge literally $1,000 for it, I could honestly see it becoming a huge hit. What do you know? This place might manage to stay in business just yet, despite the newer, fancier place down the street.
