I'd estimate that the standard spirit serving is a half pour here. My old fashioned (it has some other name on the menu) was half the glass and tasted watery. My partner ordered a frozen drink and it was served in a champagne glass, and so I assume it was 80% water since ice has a larger volume than liquid water. Decor is a cool idea, it's an island plane crash with LOST vibes. But not interesting enough to save this dreadful experience.

This of course took away from the lovely vibes because YUCK who wants to smell that. It was strong enough that the staff kept lighting sage and walking through to try and mask the smell. Because of that I am knocking it 2 stars because even after changing seats it was just nasty lol. I think if they fix whatever issue that was it would be a 5/5 from me.

It was a dog day afternoon. Looking for employment for a bartender opening, I stumbled across a tiki bar called Trad'r Sam; stumbled meaning I discovered it in my own journey looking for work. Trad'r Sam most likely got its name from the infamous Plaza Hotel's tiki bar Trad'r Vicks, but I will see what they have. I used the seeking -bartender-motto which is find out about the place before you ask for a job. It was a little after 1:00PM on Wednesday. The door was perched open and no more than 5 people sitting at the bar. The bar tender also happened to be the owner. Each bar patron came from different walks of life. Three were regulars, one was an unemployed oil rig operator and the other one was me a first timer trying to figure out the place. I asked what was his speciality and the owner replied everything. I didn't order any of the fruit bunch bowls they are known for since the owner didn't offer. One of the regulars even asked for a job which came back to him in a jest, "The only job I have for you is a 'b*** j**' (the drink of course.) That answered my question too. I had a total of three beers. The Blue Moon was the only one I remembered. The oil rigger bought a round before he left on his Harley which just got a ticket for parking in the yellow meter. Thanks oil rigger! Seeing the other side of the bar for just the dive bar atmosphere was good enough for me. Maybe next he will offer a me a BJ! read more

We went here for my birthday last year, the presents I received included a fake shark tattoo (in honor of shark week, which i really get behind) a bouncy ball, and a card. Scorpion Bowls do not taste like alcohol, but they are. they really really are. 2 of those combined with "birthday shots" made this a night to remember, which I can't remember. I woke up with the shark tattoo on my left boob, the bouncy ball in my pocket and the card missing. I also believe I ate a large amount of beef jerky, but i can't be sure. The end of the night was me and this random chick giving some Russian dude named Ivan a ride home, and then getting lost, and then making it back to the boy-toy's pad, and then puking. but it was fun. very fun. My advice is to cab it, because this bar is out of the way, but definitely a destination. To sum it up - great and unique bar in the richmond district, tucked away in a very safe place in San Francisco, you can park on the avenues here if you drove here (street cleaning only twice a month) and take a cab home because I guarantee you that by the end of the night you will be in NO CONDITION TO DRIVE. read more

I cam here with a couple of friends and it was super packed. The environment was really relaxed and there was a jukebox where you can choose songs which was pretty cool! The atmosphere had all different age groups but definitely a younger crowd which would be my preference since I just came out of college. Since I came here, i just HAD to get the Scorpion bowl, I definitely had brain freeze because my friends and I were trying to finish it and there was 5 of us, but it was pretty strong so we gave up fast, but it's definitely a fun thing to do with your friends. We also order other drinks which wasn't that pricey. If you get the Hawaiian Tea, it is STRONG. Up to you if you wanted something light or strong but the waitress was super nice and very informative. The only downside would be that the tables are kind of small, but I mean you go to have a good time, and it was definitely a fun experience. I would go again! read more

Angie told me that Church of Satan founder Anton Lavey and Blanch Barton frequented the place before Lavey had a crippling heart attack in '95. They usually sat in the Kauai space and lived a ten minute walk away on California Street. Angie once laughingly told me that when she was pregnant she was afraid he was going to steal her baby for sacrifice. Angie did the yeoman's work there and defended it from the City's ruthless business bullying during the lockdown era. So now, no more Angie, and the victors have been talked into an "improved" decor (aside from new flooring and seat coverings probably). All good things must pass, I guess. Amelia Earhart disappeared the year the place opened, and Doktor Lavey is probably looking up from hell and laughing about the stupidity of the victors. The only reason I would ever come back to this place is if I was somehow involved in selling Axe Body Spray and wanted to make a killing OR if I felt that my life was suddenly lacking homophobic slurs. You may think it's a dive bar, but it's not. I would characterize it as a token dive bar. Employee fear of donning a mop does not automatically grant dive status...it is granted rather in relation to a certain state of existence. The really sad part is that there are no mind-blowing bars in this part of the Richmond. Question...do you live in the Richmond and have a video game system? EXCELLENT! I know everyone loves this place, and I hate being the gloomy rain cloud over this parade... but I just don't get it. Don't get me wrong, the drinks are pretty good (ahem, Chocolate Banana), and the bartender is absolutely fab. However the crowd definitely leaves something to be desired. Last time I was here I got hit on by some 24 Hour Fitness training, guido wannabe with 2 huge CZ earrings in his ears. Thankfully, a certain wonderful wing woman came in and saved me from his certainly lecherous advances... but still. When THIS is the most promising there... there's a problem. Came here after a dinner party and post dinner party. My boyfriend and I were unsatisfied after a night with friends, afterall, it was only midnight -__-. We still wanted to stay out so we trekked to Trad'r Sam to try their scorpion bowl! I was excited to order it and also surprised to find out it was enough for 4 people. The place was a hole in the wall. It was very crowded and no where to sit. I shared a scorpion bowl with my boyfriend and we enjoyed the laid back atmosphere. The scorpion bowl was ok, and I was just as aware of my surroundings by the time i finished. It was definitely a lot, but it didn't really wow me. God I love this place! Three years now and counting. I just can't stay away! The fruity drinks, the tikki-dive atmosphere, the crappy couches and the weekend crowds... Plus Fred and the D-man serving up the best scorpion bowl this side of anywhere! If you only ever go once, for one drink, drink.... The Sabotage; one's the limit. Trust me, I've put down at least one each of the sixty-some odd concoctions they call drinks there (it was a personal mission a few years back), and the only one I keep coming back for is the good old Sabotage! One of the original Polynesian spots and the architects of real punchy punch bowls. If you don't mind possibly sharing spittle with others, by all means, get the scorpion bowls and the other large bowls of fruity alcohol with as many long straws as you wish. It's a fun place. the more you drink, the more everyone laughs...the more everyone laughs the more you laugh. The more you laugh, the more happy chemicals get released into your blood stream. Great for the weekday night with a group of friends. Only issue is the weekends - not a lot of room to sit down so you have to fight for a table. It is great if you get a booth or a table, but if you don't, you could be screwed because people generally hang out here for a while sipping on their bowls. Not a run in, move on type of place. So, moral is, if you get a good spot, stay. But if you don't get a good spot (and want to sit), probably should move on as a spot likely will not open too soon. read more

This is a great tiki bar! Definitely run down inside but, nonetheless still cool! the drinks are GREAT, and everyone in this joint is friendly! We haven't been here in a while because it's so dificult to park on the weekends! During the week parking is a little easier but, workth the trouble! It's located in a residentail neighborhood with a lot of apartment buildings so, that's why parking is tough. This is the epitome of everything wrong in SF, take a wonderful institution and tun it into an arrogant hipster horrible service dive bar. If you want rude service trying to upcharge you when they screw up your drink order, this is your spot. So many other places in the city that treat you like a human and actually care about their customers. Imagine being in an elevator that simultaneously smells like both a garbage bag of old liquor bottles that have been sweltering in the sun for two weeks and leather clothes found on 4,000 year old Iron Age bog body that had been left to sit out. We didn't even think to say we were going to the courtyard. We were screamed at for IDs. We turned around handed our IDs (33M and 31F). Wife took back her ID. Bartender made a comment "no need to snatch it. That's my job". We felt uncomfortable and decided to leave. Bartender yelled "good bye thanks for coming" in a very sarcastic tone. Terrible service. Terrible way to approach a customer. Regardless if you're having a homeless bathroom problem.

I ordered the chicken tenders appetizer for dinner which was a good portion and very crunchy. Most of the food they have is fried. The atmosphere played very loud music though so it was very difficult to talk. They should lower the music so people don't need to shout to talk. We stopped in on a chilly Saturday afternoon/early evening and the place was pretty packed. There was only one bartender working and probably about 50 people in the bar, but he was slinging the drinks and doing it with a smile. They had a pretty good amount of seating. Lots of chairs at the bar, some bigger group tables, and some two tops. We grabbed a cocktail then a seat at one of the backgammon tables. I had never played backgammon before, but quickly picked it up and became obsessed. We played a few rounds and got another drink and some bags of chips at the bar. Sadly I don't find myself in the city too often anymore, but this would definitely be a staple for me if I still frequented the sunset.

But the last time I went to the 540, I realized it had become my preferred go-to, because: it's about the people. Locals frequent it, no techbros, no attitude, just regular regulars. It's owner-operated with a small staff that you can get to know over time (Kevin & Ben stand out), although there have been adds and drops. Friendly, fast, and courteous. Full-service bar, a lot of choices on draft, and one bespoke, rotating cocktail on tap at all times. You can get an industry special beer & shot for $10. Or, a Mystery Shot for $5. I tried it a few times and all were winners. This is not a guarantee. There's outdoor seating in a small patio facing Clement St., 2-3 tables and almost always one is available. It was good in its previous incarnation that didn't survive the pandemic shutdown. But now it is remodeled in a way that respected the previous layout while upgrading the facilities, and the new owners have created a vibe that's accepting and chill. It's my local.

So many memories have been made here -- birthdays, celebrations, nights out with friends and family, and plenty of random evenings that turned into some of the best ones. We've also made friendships here that have lasted for years. It's one of those rare neighborhood bars where you can walk in, see familiar faces, bring your dog, grab a drink, and immediately feel at home. I was especially honored to be asked to guest bartend for The Equal Pour, an event celebrating 55 years of women being able to bartend in California. It was such a fun and meaningful day, and San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie even stopped by to celebrate with everyone. And because the Horseshoe always seems to have a good story attached to it, we were also there when the Budweiser Clydesdales came by to deliver beer -- definitely one of those only-in-San-Francisco neighborhood moments. The staff here has always treated us like family, and that's what keeps us coming back year after year. No pretension, no fuss -- just good people, a great neighborhood atmosphere, dogs welcome, and a place that has been part of our lives for well over a decade. The Horseshoe is a true Marina neighborhood gem, and I hope it stays exactly that for many more years.

Although there was only one bartender working the bar which was packed with a lot of people watching the Kentucky Derby, the service was incredible and the bartender immediately acknowledged us and took our order. We ended up getting two rounds, and again the bartender was super prompt and attentive with service when we went back inside for round two. Overall, this place is a gem, especially being in the Marina. Down to earth and comforting vibe. Highly recommend if you're looking for a nice watering hole or a place to play pool.
