From one of the most dedicated General Managers in San Francisco right on down the line, the service and the individuals who work at Pagan Idol are some of the most inviting I have had the pleasure of sitting across from. Maggie did an incredible job mixing me one of the most delicious drinks I have had the pleasure of sipping, right down to the fresh garnishes they used to present a beautiful cocktail. The atmosphere at Pagan Idol mixes classic Tiki with an exquisite selection of rum you will spend half a decade trying to sort your way through. The combination of amazing seating options and classical island decor makes anyone want to sail away for long hours to escape the office. The long hours of code my team and I have been grinding through, building tools that may one day replace us, make a place like Pagan Idol irreplaceable. One more thing that in today's society is inestimable is the wonderful service I received from the people at Pagan Idol. They reminded me that human kindness and good drinks can be hard to come by in a city where ambition and highbrowed hubris have become the norm -- rather than what compliments incredible people. Pagan Idol might be my favorite tiki spot this side of the bay for a few reasons: 1) Inspired decor -- the wooden ship hull design in the front bar and the huts + volcano in the back bar make popping in for a cocktail feel like an excursion to another world. I'd heard the back bar opens after 7, but when I was there the doors magically parted at 5:30 so my hubs and I relocated to a private hut for a cozier final round. 2) Delicious drinks -- the menu offers a nice selection of tiki standards, new takes on old classics and some Pagan Idol originals. Each drink is built from fresh, house-made ingredients and all potent yet balanced on the palate. Many are rum-based but not all so there's some variety if rum isn't your thing. 3) Expert bartenders -- the fella who made my drinks knew his stuff and answered questions about the menu patiently without an ounce of attitude. When I decided I wanto venture off-menu for my second order, he whipped up a daiquiri variation that he intuited would fit my tastes based on preferences I shared (and nailed it). I really wish I had taken more pictures of the inside. We ended up here with a group of friends. It was around 12:00 am when we walked in. Entering into what looks like the hull of a ship was cool but walking up the stairs into the back room laid out like a Polynesian island was jaw dropping. This was such a fun place. I had been waiting in like for about 3 minutes - one of the bartenders was making drinks, and the other one was leisurely talking to some customers. Fine, whatever. I was waiting in line for another drink when someone attempted to take the table I was sitting at, by removing a shopping bag I had on top of the table. I moved to tell them I was sitting there but in that time, a group of 6 had moved up behind them to order. I got back in line, and another man had come up beside me - they took this man's order before mine. These two bartenders ruined what would have otherwise been an okay experience. Don't come here unless you're in a large group because that's the only way they'll pay attention to you. It was a spontaneous decision to come in with a friend on a weekday after seeing the decorative exterior. On the inside, it was just as fun; we noticed a small aquarium along with colorful dim lights. It was free seating, and we sat along the wall of the bar. We ordered their Pagan Old Fashioned and Banana Be' cocktails. Both drinks had a rum base, and I enjoyed the Banana Be' more due to its less strong alcoholic taste. Loved it so much we went two days in a row. Monday was pretty empty but Matt was an amazing bartender. Fun, engaging, lots of spirit knowledge. Went back on Tuesday and although it was super busy, Shelley was also great and engaging. There's a back area with alcoves and a 2nd bar that is open most days except Monday. Cool tiki bar in FiDi! A friend and I stopped in for drinks after work since our offices are basically right next door. Other patrons seemed to be mostly other office workers with the same idea. Definitely took much longer than expected to be able to order and get our drinks despite not too many people. I had the mango tango, which was much more sour than I would've liked. Tried some of my friend's drink (the bird), which tasted much better. Ambiance in the back feels really immersive, and every so often a sound would play on the speakers that make you feel like you're in a pirate ship. read more

My favorite tiki bar in the financial district. Interior 5/5: Cool nautical theme on the entrance room. It's less noisy than the main. Both rooms have their own bar. The main room is more spacious but noisier. They have cool mist , smoke sound system that create the rainforest vibes. If you can try to snag a private bungalow hut- It can seat 5 ppl very comfy and maybe 8 but tight. It helps with the noise and more intimate. Drinks 4/5 Prices from 15-18$ for single cocktails. $38+ for shared group ones. Some have a fire show for it and they queue the music and sound when it's delivered to you. Service 3.5. Not enough staff. Only two bartenders while a large line is forming. The drinks aren't simple so it increases the wait time. read more

I've had this place bookmarked for YEARS and I finally had energy to drop in during a work trip. I think I've only ever been to one other tiki bar (golden tiki las vegas) and I am not well-versed in tiki culture but I do enjoy a transporting tropical bev. In true social anxiety fashion, I checked the menu before arriving and saw that two cocktails have a 2 item limit per patron (did I grammar that correctly?). I thought a drink limit was kinda funny until I was halfway thru my first The Bird (which tasted like JUICE) and started feeling buzzy--they're not playing around here! The coconut whip on top was so delicious but I had a hard time determining if I was supposed to mix it in or just take the whip to the dome. The hurricane glass had this weird Mary Poppins never-ending cocktail effect and just when I thought I had finished The Bird, there was more tucked in every bend of the glass. I had to keep the tequila theme going and moved on to a Serpent's Gift. I think I was hoping for more guava on the nose like NYC Superbueno's effervescent and fragrant guava y soda but the Serpent was def giving venom and vigor. I was ready to close out so I could speed walk back to my hotel before the sun went down but my bartender was practicing some cocktails and passed me a Banana Be' to try. The bruleed banana atop the banana chip was the perfect sugary shattering snack to accompany the cocktail. I want to thank my bartender for looking out for me cuz I was a solo female patron. There were not a whole lot of people, so service was reasonably quick, but the drinks were just ok (this may just be a personal preference, but can we please cut back on the amount of lime juice in cocktails?! - I get it is a balancing ingredient, but it seems to be overused, not just here). Came here on a Friday night for a friend's birthday, which ended up rolling into my birthday at midnight (was trying to keep it lowkey). My husband LOVES Tiki Bars and tries to search for them in every city we visit. He's had the San Francisco spots bookmarked for a while and Pagan Idol was at the top of his list. We stopped in after going to an early evening event and arrived right before they started getting busy. We immediately went to the bar and asked about their drinks and asked the bartender what their favorite was. The menu was really fun and they had a great variety of drinks to choose from. We opted for two of the bartender's recommendations from the front bar and then went to the back bar to explore. I took a bunch of photos and some videos as well, the space doesn't have as many small items and decorations as some of the Tiki bars we've been to, but what they had was well thought out. We enjoyed the special lighting and audio aspects that happen occasionally and they had some different seating options. We sat in a cute booth in the back for a bit, but it got really hot and stuffy so we moved to a small table instead. We ended up purchasing another round of drinks from the bar in the back and they weren't as interested in creating surprise drinks. We knew we'd like everything, so we just chose some from the menu that stood out to us. Luckily, the whole time we were there it wasn't busy but as we were leaving there was a group of people heading in. All the drinks we tried were delicious and we had a nice time. Spent a night in the city before driving up to wine country and this is where the evening ended - one of the coolest bars I've ever been to just decorated so on theme and the drinks were delish and strong. I got the Banana Be and it was delightful - such a fun presentation as well with it being lit on fire. Service was on the slower end but it was a Friday night so completely understandable. Walking in you are in the bowels of the boat ... very nicely done 1st room that gives off the illusion of being inside the boat. We stopped here on our way out for a whiskey and a tiki mug. The bartenders were helpful and attentive. The 2nd room was the more typical tiki feel. Dark, foggy and more themed. We didn't find a spot to sit so we just walked through. I've come here several times on weekend and day nights throughout the years, and I've somehow never seen a line. Once inside, the ambiance is super nice. Absolutely amazing ambiance and on point tiki theme! But the drinks are STRONG. I ordered the Banana Life and could only take a few sips sadly. Maybe I ordered the wrong thing, or maybe I'm weak.... The tiki decorations are seriously amazing though (I like the decor here more than at Smugglers Cove) and they also have a whole mini water pool inside which is so cool. Smoke machine & fun lights really up the atmosphere. They play great music too w tropical sound effects. Seating is randomly dispersed throughout the bar so you kinda have to wander around looking for a free barrel table and stools to sit on if you want a table. It can be kinda hard when it's crowded bc it's also pretty dark and hard to see.
