Hot Beef with Whipped Potatoes
Steve N.

Two of came in to refuel, both the car and ourselves. It was busy as the breakfast buffet crowd were still finishing up. We were looking for a lunch option. We ordered a Crispy Chicken Salad and the Hot Beef with Whipped Potatoes. They were very slow on the refills but we got them eventually. The meals were both excellent. Very tasty and, despite my photos, were just fantastic. Gave a fourth star because the food was so good.

If need a stop for breakfast- this is a great place! The waitress was awesome- attentive and pleasant. The food was hot, flavorful and presented on flat metal skillet. Our table had the two egg breakfast, biscuits and gravy and an omelette- would order all again. The environment was clean and depicted the name of the restaurant to a tee- almost museum like! The whole experience was enjoyable!

I stopped at this wonderful restaurant on the way back to Fargo, from Theodore Roosevelt National Park. Trapper's Kettle is located just off I-94 in the small town of Belfield, ND. The restaurant offers traditional American Cuisine. It only gets a 3 star rating. However, I encourage you to experience it for yourself. The service is okay. When I visited, they were short staffed. I was more in love with the ambiance of the place than the food itself. I felt that the food was good but not great. My waitress was okay. Not sure if she was tired or overworked but at least portray that you enjoy being at work and that you have some passion for serving others. I do not know if she was having a bad day. For my entree I ordered the Liver and Onions (extra onions) with Mashed Potatoes and Gravy. It came with a salad. My waitress didn't tell me to help myself to the salad bar. I had to figure that out on my own. I love how the salad bar rests in a canoe. Brilliant idea! Their salad bar offers the typical vegetables and side items that you would expect at a salad bar. Nothing exceptional here. I do not remember if bread or dinner rolls were offered as part of the meal or dining here. Liver & Onions were good. I'm not a big Mashed Potatoes and Gravy person. However, I felt that their Mashed Potatoes were good. I passed on dessert. I decided to have fudge that I bought in Medora for the car ride back to Fargo. Browse all the pictures I uploaded. The ambiance and decorations of this place is brilliant. I just loved the rustic look and feel. I do agree that the quality of their food could improve. Also, pay attentions for signs on the side of the highway (I-94) that point the way to Trapper's Kettle. I recommend stopping here and checking it. Even if it's for just a cup of coffee or cold beverage. The various decorations on the walls and the overall experience is worth the visit. Especially if you're a fan of a rustic setting. I'm not sure if I would return here. I would probably explore a different food option. However, I'm glad that I decided to stop and dine here. Again, experience this place for yourself but manage the expectations for quality of food. I hope that you enjoy your visit to Trapper's Kettle!

For the sportsman/hunter - this place has an awesome vibe! The taxidermy displays alone are worth seeing, not to mention the wildlife diorama displays and the collection of traps. In these terms, this place rivels Cabela's. Take some time to stroll around and look at the photos and artwork hanging on the walls. The gift shop is worth a look also. Food is simple, no frills. Don't miss the Lemon meringue pie and coffee after dinner!

This is $18 piece of chicken for dinner.

Decor and parking were easy. Food was not good. $18 for this chicken dinner Not one good thing to say about the food other than the salad bar was decent.

Early morning so it's a bit empty but this place is a legend and must go!

Awesome historical place. My extended family loved this place for the past decades and so happy to check it out.

If eating amongst stuffed critters doesn't bother you this is a good breakfast stop on Hwy 85 and I-94. The place is pretty cool, they have a little shop, lodging and the restaurant. I ordered 2 eggs over easy, bacon, hash browns and coffee. Everything was cooked just right and they make a good cup of java. I have to comment on the service, the waitress was Linda and she is a superstar. The dining area is huge and there were about 10 tables occupied spread throughout a big area and she was taking orders, bussing tables, cashiering and topping off coffee cups in a timely manner. Linda was working hard and doing an excellent job of providing excellent customer service. She has been doing this for 41 years and still doing it very well. I rate the meal 3 stars, it was pretty good and the price was reasonable. I give 2 extra stars because the service Linda provides is a rarity these days.

Most of the seating is at the bar. The bar chairs are cushy, with backs and places for your feet. There is also a sitting area with couches. We both enjoyed our beverages and would've had another if we didn't have to hop on the road. I drank a rose from the Willamette River Valley, OR, while my hubby had a mule. For lunch, we ordered the yummy burrata with prosciutto and tomatoes as our appetizer. For our meal, we shared the chicken bacon ranch pizza. It was so good and very filling. We might have been able to eat it all if we hadn't gotten the app, but we can't resist a burrata. I recommend asking for a side of their ranch to dip your crust in. They also have a gift shop with excellent-smelling soy candles that I almost bought (but I'm on a candle freeze until I use more of what I already have) and t-shirts and coasters with fun quotes. They also have escape rooms in envelopes that I was tempted to buy, as I have never seen them.

This was my favorite spot to eat for our Dakotas trip! So much so, we came here the two nights we…read morewere in Dickinson. We got there early both nights for two reasons: 1. They get busy quickly, had a wait after we were seated both nights. 2. They have both short and high top tables. We needed the short tables for my father-in-law. The only negative about this place is the space and ability to move around in between tables, especially when someone like my FIL is using a walker. Here are some of the things we got during our two visits that we enjoyed: *Huckleberry mule - got this both nights, this was made to perfection! *Steak Tips *Cheese curds *Knoephla soup - something the area is known for, and I'm glad I got a chance to try. Similar to a chicken and dumplings that the south is known for. Note they do not have this soup every night, although they should. *Walleye sandwich - my husband had never had walleye. Also something the area is known for and he was glad he got to try! *Scotcharoo - a dessert the area is known for, which we had never had. It's a much better tasting rice krispy treat as it has the addition of peanut butter, chocolate, and butterscotch. All of the flavors work so well together. We loved it so much, we got a couple extras on the second night to take home with us! We really enjoyed getting to try drinks and food the area is known for. The service was fantastic both nights - servers always willing to help with a smile. I highly recommend Blue 42 if you are in the area!

I also loved the camaraderie between all the servers and bartenders. Everyone helped a H other and asked, "How can I help you?" It was very impressive that they were so caring toward each other and had each other's backs. The bar chairs are comfy, but the bar for my legs was a little low, and I'm tall. I had an espresso martini, which they made a little sweet for my taste, and my hubby had the huckleberry mule, which was really good. We ordered the pickled something for our appetizer, and it was so good! It's like pickles in an egg roll with a delicious sauce. For dinner, I had walleye with crinkle fries and a side of ranch, which was good. I was getting full. I ate my walleye without the bun, and I dipped it in the sauce from the app. My hubby was very happy there was a patty melt on the menu and thoroughly enjoyed it. He got the slaw as his side and liked it too. We will definitely come back for drinks and eats if we are ever in th town again.
