We ate at Trattoria Alberto for the first time while on vacation in Washington DC and had an absolutely AMAZING experience. The service was excellent (our server was Manny and he was wonderful!) and the food was spectacular! Our family of four each had a different entree and we took turns tasting all the entree's. Not a complaint to be had and we each agreed we loved everyone's food. We also had dessert and that was fabulous as well! Not too fancy, not too stiff, I used to go here all the time for an Italian fix. I wouldn't say it is the best Italian in the area, but I love the atmosphere and simple menu. When I ate meat, I craved their chicken marsala which comes with fabulous garlic pasta. I've tried most of the other menu items and I can say that everything is good. My father knew the previous owner and the service here has always been great and very professional. After returning here for a meal last year, I noticed that most of their employees have been working here for many, many years, and a former waiter from the late 90's is now a co-owner. The food was good; the service was horrendous. Two other roommates and myself visited this joint as a part of a "get to know the Eastern Market" game, and our initial impressions of the restaurant were good. The food was tasty, the music charming, those surrounding us seemed to be having a good time as well; the first part, all in all, made a very good impression. Then came time to pay the bill. One would think that if there are three young women who are clearly not related that came in and ate together, and who ASKED FOR SEPARATE CHECKS, that the waiter would kindly accede and make life easier for everyone. Literally, all he had to do was take out two more scraps of paper and rearrange the bill that way, and we would have left as happy customers. Instead, the gentleman (who might be the owner) figured that we would be easy to dope/ disrespect and spoke over our requests, telling us that he was going to bring the bill as one and that we could then pay as we wanted to. When the bill was brought around, however, and we told him how much we wanted to be charged to each card, he loudly interrupted us two more times, talking over us and telling us that the entire bill needed to be paid, a very condescending fact to point out, and then he charged us all more or less than we actually owed on our cards, leaving us to have to scramble cash to each other in order to even out the bills. I know this might seem trivial, but customer service ought to be their number one, and instead they left us feeling frustrated and as though we couldn't be respected because we're women. Not willingly going to eat here again, and advise that you don't either. read more

Such a friendly neighborhood place. We popped in for dinner without a reservation, and had a really lovely evening. The staff seem to know many of the customers and greeted them warmly, adding to a great ambiance. I've taken the husband and my staff here many times over the years, and every time it is fantastic! I think the people complaining about fresh pasta don't know what fresh pasta tastes like - its not your Cisco crap from TGIF's. This is the real deal - and I make my own pasta at home every once and awhile. The pasta carbanaro is to die for - prosciutto ham is slightly pan fired for an extra crunch, and the cream sauce is fantastic. You can tell its made in house because it separates when you try to reheat it at home - all the more reason to lap it up at the restaurant. We've had waiter Simeone many times, and he remembers us and is always on top of his game - even when the large place is crowded. Very attentive and always looking for what needs to be done. You'll notice he never stops moving! Price point for DC is a fantastic bargain, with 1/2 bottles of good wine all week during the day. I just returned from dining at Trattoria Alberto. The food, when it finally came, was good. The service was terrible. We were the only people in the down stairs dining room. Our wine came promptly. We ordered an appetizer and entrees.That was the last service we had for about an half hour. Our waiter passed by often but ignored us. Finally I asked if we canceled the appetizer, could we get our meal. He said ok but it was another ten minutes. It arrived with the appetizer we had canceled; they gave it to us on the house. Something.We were told there was a computer glitch but no excuse for our waiter not noticing we were not being served. I will go back but if I ever experience such terrible service, never again. read more

We ordered take out after a long day of sightseeing. A huge disappointment. Stale bread. My husband ordered pasta with olive oil and garlic and shrimp. Pasta basically dry. I ordered the Cannoloni. Watery sauce with bland taste. I ordered the tiramasu. It sat for no more than 20 minutes while I ate my dinner. I opened the carton anticipating my favorite dessert and it was pure mush. I have no idea how long it had sat out at the restaurant. Totally inedible. I threw it out. Being a dessert lover that was hard to do but I was worried it would make me ill. I DO NOT recommmend this restaurant. If we had eaten in I would of gotten my money back. read more

LOVE this place! I work on Capitol Hill and we try to get there as often as we can. How many places do you know anymore that INCLUDE a salad with your entree? It's a delicious little salad too. The staff is friendly and everything I've had there is delicious. A buddy of mine says the lasagna is the best he's ever had. The fish is good, the pasta dishes are good, the veal and chicken dishes are good too. The prices are VERY reasonable, especially at lunch time. Taramisu ain't what it used to be, unfortunately. Old school Italian place that reminds me of all the great Italian places I grew up around in NJ. This place is the polar opposite of all those trendy new places that are opening around the city. I wouldn't call it gourmet cooking exactly, but it's a quiet, classic, Italian-American place that was holding down the Barrack's Row/Eastern Market neighborhood years before anyone heard of the word "hipsters". Whatever your political leanings, try the "Boehner" (who is supposedly a regular here), breaded veal cutlet with fried egg and anchovies. Tastes like salty fried goodness. I've been here before, thought it was good and decided to come back with my mom. Service has gone downhill. Had to flag down my waiter for water and Parmesan and they weren't even busy. If they were busy, I'd understand, but it's dead in here and now I know why. Service sucks, food is awful. I got the carbonara which was legit just a shit ton of heavy cream and probably one slice of American bacon. Absolutely disgusting. Carbonara is supposed to have egg yolk for a rich flavor, or asparagus or something else added to it. All I know is it tasted like shitty alfredo you'd get from a jar at the grocery store, which, again, is just cream. Alfredo and carbonara are NOT the same. So sad I wasted calories and money on this place. Wish I could regurgitate it and walk out, but I hadn't eaten all day so I was desperate for something. read more

This place is a huge rip off. For several years we have had our office Xmas party there. Roughly 25 people buying full course meals with drinks and wine. I just found this out from our party coordinator who was worried about telling me then and now of that we actually got cheated. First of all the food is mediocre at best. Though no one else was in the the restaurant the service was a joke. Our checks came and we noticed that stuff that was quoted in the price was extra. People who didn't have wine for example were charged for wine. Sodas were supposed to be included but we were" charged for them anyway and I did not have any to drink. The worst part that I just recently found out when we were planning this years party was that the people told our party coordinator that we owed 59 more dollars. She didn't say anything to me at the the time because she didn't want to make a big deal. She is our Executive Assistant and really prides herself on our social events, so her husband paid the difference, unbeknownst to me. This is an abomination and they should not be patronized. To say that I would not go there again is an understatement. Our entire office of 85 people are incensed... this year and in the future we will go elsewhere as this place has so much money they don't our patronage.... read more

This place is such a GEM!! Over the years the restaurant selection on Capitol Hill has just grown and grown. There are so many to choose from but Trattoria Alberto has remained consistently good. The food and the service are just great. When my wife turned 50 we had a party for 30 here and the staff pulled it off as if serving a table for two!! The veal dishes are some of the best I've ever had. The salads are great. The house made agnolotti is a house specialty. In winter the pasta e-fagioli soup will warm your soul!! read more

after holding off for a year or so my girlfriend and i finally decided to give this 8th street italian eatery a chance. we encountered the same cold, store-bought bread, foil-wrapped butter, and limited menu that other reviewers pointed out. however, there were a few surprises. she ordered their ricotta, spinach, and prosciutto ravioli special. they refused to put it in a white wine sauce, claiming it had never been done before (how innovative!). so she settled for their mixed marinara/cream sauce after they insisted on it. when they brought it out they requested that she try it in front of them and tell them how good it is. friendly? i guess, if you like performing on command (by the way: she didn't enjoy the sauce). i stuck with their sausage, peppers, and pasta dish. the marinara wasn't that good, and they smothered the whole dish in it. i think the food trucks in philly (specifically, the one at 34th and walnut) do a better job with this entree. during the entire meal our servers would yell to us from across the restaurant or from the upstairs level. also, they left all the doors open so the cool air from outside/noise from the adjacent fire station filled the restaurant. near the end i noticed that they (accidentally?) added $10 to the bill, which took about 10 minutes to correct. we won't be going back. why should we? floriana in dupont is much better! read more

Went here after a Washington Nationals game. Service was professional and attentive. Ambiance was good. Food was mediocre at best. I had veal milanese which was basically thinly sliced heavily breaded fried veal with spaghetti and virtually no sauce. When I've had that dish before it came with a salad on top. My son had the seafood lasagna special which he said tasted like it had been microwaved. My husband's veal dish was also just okay. A bit disappointing given all of the good Yelp reviews. read more

I got dinner here on a Thursday night around 7:30. It was not too crowded and we were seated at a nice table inside. They also have a patio out front. Go to this place if you want quality, old school Italian food served by friendly waiters. The portions were good, the food tasted homemade (in a good way), and our waiter was very knowledgeable about all things Italian. They make their own pasta and their sauces where very good, not watery or bland. This reminded my of places in the North End in Boston. Classic, simple Italian food at a good price. This is one of my favorite places to eat on Capitol Hill. Their wines are very reasonably priced (and they have half off on Mondays) and everything on the menu is great. About once a week they have this spinach stuffed ravioli that's amazing with pink sauce. The waiters are very friendly and remember their regular customers. If you go when Congress is in session, you'll likely see a lot of Members (including the Speaker) as this seems to be one of their favorite spots. read more

I was so craving creamy pasta, so I ordered Carbonara - ugh. It was so bad I actually sent it back. The sauce was thin and had broken and the bacon was literally white uncooked rubbery fat - gross!! I replaced it with canolini - which is supposed to be swimming in a lovely cream sauce - not so. It was stuffed with meat but the sauce was just lacking flavor.
