    Way too meaty

I had my eye on another restaurant down the block, but somehow we ended up here instead. This spot away from the tourist center had quite a local lunch crowd, so we decided to give it a shot anyway after realizing our mistake. After some confusion ordering and a bit of a wait, our food started to arrive. The bread was nothing special; the salad with red wine dressing was nice. I finished off an entire big bowl of it! For my main dish, I chose the pasta bolognese (meat sauce). I'm usually a fan of this preparation style, but it fell short here. There was WAY too much meat and not enough sauce. The meat drowned out any other flavor from the pasta or sauce. It just wasn't a well-rounded plate at all. I wouldn't say Trattoria BBQ is a poor option, but I would say you should check out the competition before eating here. This was one of my least favorite meals on my recent trip to Italy.

Dinner here was probably the most delicious and memorable meal I had across my entire trip in Europe (and it was long!).

From the outside, it looks like a grand, iron-and-glass structure typical of European markets; inside, it opens into a bustling, multi-level space filled with food vendors, communal tables, and constant movement. The vibe is energetic, social, and slightly chaotic in a fun way - perfect for grazing, group dining, or trying multiple cuisines in one visit (from Italian to American to Mexican!). We stopped in for a quick lunch at around 2pm on a Wednesday; there was plenty of seating at high-top tables, and QR codes on paper menus make it easy to explore all the different food vendor options. It's also a fun activity to peruse the market, taking in different sights, smells, and flavors. All of us ended up opting for Schiacciatas (large Italian sandwiches that are a staple in Florence) from Massimiliano Parri, which all ended up ranging from €10-12, depending on toppings - yes, it's more expensive than what you'd get from a traditional schiacciateria, but you're also paying for the market's location and convenience. We appreciated the fact that they shave the meat right in front of you! My schiacciata came with freshly shaved ham atop crusty white bread, slathered with burrata cheese, and sprinkled with arugula and figs (I opted for no additional olive oil, since I found the ham quite rich already). I loved the contrast of textures and flavors, though I will say that the bread ended up cutting the roof of my mouth! All in all, Mercato Centrale is a bit touristy, but still miles better (and cheaper) than most "Italian" sandwich places you'd find in the US (pro tip: save your receipt for free use of their bathrooms). The variety can't be beaten, prices are reasonable for a central market, and it's steps from some of Florence's most iconic spots.

I had never had burrata cheese before, which is a a fresh, Italian cheese that has a soft, creamy texture and an outer layer of mozzarella. It's essentially a mozzarella cheese ball filled with a mixture of stringy mozzarella curds and cream. Usually a Caprese Salad is mozzarella and tomatoes, but this featured burrata. It was a great introduction. I was on a roll with burrata because I ordered the spaghetti with Burrata cream. and chopped basil. It was good, but when the burrata was mixed in, it created more of a rosa sauce and I didn't really specifically taste the burrata. My wife had the Tagliolini with Ragu, which is what you call Tagliolini with Bolognaise, except when in Florence. My wife enjoyed it, but it didn't quite have the depth of flavor that we had elsewhere in Italy. This restaurant, as is the case for many restaurants in Florence is known for it's steak. However, having just had steak the night before, I went with the pasta. Compared to most restaurants in the US, this would have rated a five stars, but when compared to other restaurants in Florence (at least, as far as pasta goes), it wasn't quite up to the level of five stars. None the less, I think you would enjoy it.
