My husband & I went for dinner a few weeks ago before heading downtown for a comedy show. I ordered the ravioli di carne and my husband ordered the tagliatelle. The food was good, but not great. Portions were a little on the small side, especially given the prices ($29/$35). The entrees are a la carte, so there was no soup or salad included. We were served warm bread which was very good. I had a glass of sangria, which was just ok. We ordered the bread pudding for dessert and it was the highlight of the meal. Overall it was a good dinner, but nothing about dinner impressed me enough to recommend this place or plan on returning. read more

It was my first time here with my best friend for dinner. We made an appointment, but we were 30minutes late looking for parking. It was quite hard to find one given that we had a big ass truck. Also was on a Saturday so definitely not the best day around Kensington area. Found one in the neighborhoods behind the restaurant. Food is amazing. I haven't been to Italy but felt like I was there lol. My bestie got the spicy vodka rigatoni (holy shit it was amazing) and I got the carbonara and chicken on the side for protein. Their water cups are so small, but they have staff coming in to refill it almost every 15minutes which made the service so amazing. They bring in different cool pitchers everytime they fill our waters. I wished I could've bought one from them lol. Our waiters are absolutely so welcoming and friendly. One of my girls was in and we were both craving Italian. Haven't been to the Kensington area in years, so wanted try this spot out. It was a bit of a unique setting inside with bras and sports jerseys hanging from the ceiling and cute Italian windows with flowers. We split the Barbabietola salad, the spicy rigatoni vodka and the ravioli di carne. Everything was delicious! Our waitress was super attentive and everyone was just so nice and welcoming as we were coming in and out of the restaurant. I recommend this spot if you're looking for yummy pasta. read more

This place was pretty good. We started off with the meatballs which were AMAZING. The pastas were a little bland. The only one I liked was the mushroom ravioli. We got some of their cocktails as well. I had one with passion fruit which was so smooth. I love fruit drinks that taste like juice and this was amazing. My friend got one with strawberry or lychee ? This one was also really good. We ended with the tiramisu it was freshly prepared infront of us. The lady fingers were a little crunchy which I didn't expect. The service was nice. They normally charge you for bread but our waiter was so nice and just gave us one more. I think I would go back here for just the meatballs and drinks. This spot is a really cute joint located in Kensington. After seeing the reviews we decided to give it a try! We opted for outdoor seating but it was sort of loud, and the inside was really cute so I think we'd sit there next time. The free bread and sauce they give you is SOOO good, and we also got the grilled artichokes which were some of the best we've ever had. We also got the carbonara which was really nicely cooked and very creamy, but also lacking in flavor outside of the salty bites of meat. It was so thick it was almost paste-y, so I don't think I'd order it again. We also got the chicken parm which was solid. It was overall tasty but nothing to write home about. There was also a photographer that came and took our picture during the meal as they wanted to give us a "free post card" which was kind, but also kind of uncomfortable, while we were eating. He later brought the postcard out, but then other photos in frames and we politely declined those. We definitely didn't need the photos, and also couldn't tell if he was trying to sell us them. Overall, it created some discomfort while we were dining. I'd try this spot out again, as I think we'd enjoy some of their other entrees more. read more

We had dinner here on a Friday evening. We chose to sit inside, we enjoyed the decor.. but the restaurant was very loud. We didn't mind. The food was phenomenal. We had the buffalo mozzarella caprese to start and then an order of their chicken Parmesan and spicy rigatoni with vodka sauce. Everything was tasty and perfectly cooked. We ended the meal with their table side tiramisu. We were worried that it would just be a "show" dessert but it was so delicious! We had a really amazing dinner here on a Tuesday night. Service was impeccable, down to the timing. Squash blossoms and calamari were delicious to start. Bolognese, rigatoni vodka and the seafood pasta special all were seriously good, huge portions so we had to box it up. We sat outside and it was beautiful. I'm so shocked to see good reviews here. The server was nice but other than that it's a huge disappointment. Not only is it very tacky in its decor (this used to be a well-curated space when it was a different restaurant) but the food was so underwhelming. Not authentic Italian food from any region as I've been through most of Italy numerous times in my life. I'm southern Italian by descent and maybe I have a high standard but considering these guys are Italian it seems like they are catering to a low standard for Italian food that they think Americans want. It's strange. I won't eat here again which is sad because it's within walking distance to my house and I would love to not only have another good restaurant close by but would love to support a local business. Taking up the former space that the staple Cucina Sorella once occupied, Sofia is a fresh addition that brings authentic Italian cuisine, a fun, charming decor, and friendly service. Admittedly, I was concerned about the over-the-top Italian aesthetic (I've found restaurants with this type of decor tend to lack flavor and creative food options), but Sofia quickly eliminated my concerns. Dining on opening night, we enjoyed the calamari, Caesar's salad, pesto gnocchi, lasagna, and, of course, a cannoli. Everything we had was delicious! The gin and tonic was also great. A fun take on a classic cocktail. Standouts were the calamari, gnocchi, and cannoli. Super flavorful, well seasoned, and left you feeling cozy, like you would after eating Nona'a cooking. The only food complaint I had was that the Caesar's salad was unremarkable and slightly overdressed. The service we had was great. Our server was attentive and there when you needed her, but also didn't crowd us. It was clear that they were working through some opening night bumps. For example, there were lots of staff standing around and they were not super attentive to things like refilling water, replacing our silverware when they were cleared, or providing a pen to sign the check. With that said, this place has massive potential and I think this new addition to Kensington is really going to grow into its own. Noi torneremo!! read more

Bad service and bland food. I ordered a pasta with pesto-no flavor. My wife orderd ravioli it was okay but nothing special. This being San Diego there are more than a dozen better Italian restaurants. Not only was the food lacking but the service was bad our server forgot our appetizer order. That's not a big deal but we didn't even have a chance to tell the server until after we had eaten our main dish as this was the only time that the she returned to our table. When we told the server instead of just apologizing she stated we hadn't order any appetizer but then said she would bring it out quickly. Which she did and stated that it would be on however we were still charged for it. We had also ordered a beer which never arrived. All-in-all a disappointing meal. read more

I dined here April 5, a Friday night. Like other reviewers, I had very much liked Cucina Sorella and had high hopes for Sofia. First, the noise level is off the charts. We could barely hear one another. My dining companion and I sat at a table along the window, just as you enter the main dining room. The main door remained open and a significant chilly breeze was our companion for the evening, even though the door is a good 25 -30 feet away. The food was good. Not great, but good. However, it's pricey for what you get. We shared the calamari appetizer - a small portion to share for 2, at $21. The special salmon was perfectly cooked with crispy skin. The risotto atop which it was served was just ok. The Bolognese pasta was verygood. Our tab, for these three food items and three cocktails, with tip, came to $150. The service was very good. Our waiter was Giovanni, who was personable and attentive. I hope that Sofia is still just working out some kinks. I hope they reconsider their menu pricing - there are several really excellent Italian places (e.g., Piacere Mio in South Park, Arrivederi in Hillcrest) where a meal for two won't set you back $150. I'll try Sofia again - but noise level and pricing were the two main factors that earned this review 3 stars. I would have given the food 4 stars on its own. read more

They really cared about getting to know us & making us feel welcome. Now the food & drinks were the star of the show. Starting us off w/ a light refreshing Prosecco that tantalized the taste buds. Then jump right into the main course which was recommended by Alex from the table next to ours. Short rib polenta is a MUST! Short rib is the BEST I've ever had! Mouthwatering & succulent. It would be helpful if someone in the kitchen would taste the food. My intent is not to be nasty but for what I spend when eating out I expect the food to be tasty and well prepared. The Caesar salad tasted as though it had been dressed with mayonnaise. Not a hint of lemon garlic or olive oil anywhere to be found. The pasta Norma was disappointing. There was hardly any eggplant and the pasta was actually gummy, the sauce bland. We had a nice experience but the food was definitely mediocre. read more

I've been to Sofia five or six times and it is always spectacular. My favorite appetizers are the Crispy Burrata and the Caponata. The Ravioli di Carne and Ossobuco are divine!!!! And the table side Tiramisu is a delight. On top of that, the service is absolutely wonderful. Chock full of Italian charm, I cannot recommend this place more highly. read more
