We were disappointed with the food. The atmosphere was festive, and the servers and staff delightful and attentive. But the beef in my Spiedini Siciliana was tough and difficult to chew. Instead of cutting it with my steak knife I had to "saw" it. My companion said his Alla Palini was OK but rather bland. "It's missing something," he said. That said we will definitely return. We're glad to have Sofia in the neighborhood, and the night we had dinner was only their second day open. Here's hoping the food will be better next time. read more

I genuinely do not understand how this place is trending. My standards are honestly not high for pasta. However, the pasta here is uncooked- it's raw, no exaggeration. So it's crunchy. The mortadella and buratta appetizer with the pistachios is delicious though (why I give 2 stars this appetizer CARRIES) !! When we got our food we didn't get our appetizer yet and the owner took the plate out my hand and brought the appetizer then brought our food back again- which was strange. We asked to keep the food and he wouldn't accept. He also brought up about 8-9 times that we didn't get a refill on our soda which was really pushy. Then we got the tiramisu dessert which was a 100% copy of Cesarina, but not even as good. : ( Overall, the restaurant is gorgeous! read more

Amazing, authentic Italian food! We ordered the bruschetta to start - burrata with prosciutto, figs and a balsamic glaze on top of crispy bread. Our server was actually one of the owners, Giuseppe, and he was phenomenal. We asked for wine recommendations and he brought out a sampler. Our entrees were delicious, short rib pasta and clam pasta! Went here on a whim and i was very pleased, the whole place was so authentically Italian, the waiter were very nice and explained the menu and even recommended different menu items since it was our first time. I ordered the carbonara, it was delicious and a great portion for the price, my partner got the spicy vodka rigatoni and it was delicious as well and a great portion size. we also got items from the happy hour menu like some garlic bread and truffle fries and there were good as well. There was even someone coming around taking free photos of your table, it was a very fun and great place and the ambiance was amazing. We also got the regular and pistachio tiramisu and both were delicious and they make it right in front of you so everything is extremely fresh !!! Finally went here since it's a short walk for me. 5pm there were not a lot of people there. Cute decorations inside. They certainly do push a lot of table together to try and get as many people as possible. My table they gave us was right after the end of the ramp to walk inside the main dining room. I was not super happy because there was maybe 4 tables being used; I get it on a busy night but I should have sat outside instead. Food was good overall. I added chicken to my carbonara and it was good but not mind blowing. My partner got the Sugo Pittinicchi and it was bomb. I'll probably come back for just happy hour and sit at the bar. This new spot is worth all the hype! We ordered the crispy burrata and polpette (meatballs) topped with creamy burrata to start. Everything was so fresh! The crispy burrata is one of their most popular apps. I was so torn what to order for my main so I decided to ask the waiter. He was super helpful. I was between the cacio e Pepe and ravioli di pesce. He recommended the ravioli and it did not disappoint. It was so fresh and love all the flavors. If I could give a 2.5 I would and most the stars are for service not food. Good service. Nice menu. Execution......terrible. Appetizers artichokes : 4 stars grilled and tasty the large amount of lettuce u see was not necessary. Fried burrata: none stars... was very grease ladened. The pistachio pesto was a weird bland. The mortadella was not high quality and reminded me of bologna. And just didn't have any place in this dish. The outer breading was as if the oil was as not hot enough so it cooked strange. Beet salad fresh and tasty but very basic 3 stars. Main dishes : Clams and fettuccine: 3 stars... blander sauce but clams were fresh. Pasta was overcooked and gummy. Clams were the redeeming quality. Chicken parmesean : 3 stars...basic .. again breading was oil ladened and seems like it was cooked in too cold oil. The marinara sauce was not great. Pasta was gummy and overcooked. Short rib ravioli. 2.5 stars pasta was cooked properly the short rib in the middle was somewhat flavorless. The sauce was ok the truffle flavor was light. After a few bites it didn't sit right with me. Spinach ravioli. 3.5 Well executed. The chicken on top was dry but pesto was good and pasta was cooked nicely. I would not come here again . What serendipity that we happened to be walking past Trattoria da Sofia just after they opened for their happy hour. (By which they really mean "hour" -- it runs from 4 - 5 pm.) We were hungry and decided to explore this relatively new Italian restaurant in Kensington. It was very quiet because it was very empty while we were there, which was fine with us. We sat in the "street" room, which is supposed to look and feel like a narrow street somewhere in Italy, complete with laundry hanging on clotheslines between residential buildings. The concept is somewhat similar to La Vecindad (Mexican restaurant in Hillcrest exuding Mexico City tenement courtyard ambience), except the vibe here is classy and sedate, and with regular tables instead of picnic tables and high-tops. And it's Italian. Even the flooring is made to look like the cobblestone in a European street. Casual and colorful in a nice way, in other words. If the "street" room doesn't suit you, there's also another more conventional, very-Italian looking area adjacent to the bar, and an attractive outdoor patio. We looked at both the happy hour and regular dinner menus, and I was almost ready to order ossobuco from the latter, but my companion wanted something light so we decided to share from the HH menu. We ordered meatballs in pomodoro sauce (similar to marinara but more intense), which had a small amount of a creamy white "parmesan fondue" swirled on top. Excellent dense meatballs -- very tasty. There were three. And the sauce was just right. The happy hour Caesar salad that we got was simple but flavorful. My companion thought she detected anchovies in the dressing, but I didn't. But the highlight for us was the cheese ravioli, offered on the menu with a selection of two sauces. We went with pesto. There were five raviolis, and they were absolutely delicious with a smooth, delicately flavored creamy pesto, attractively presented on a long skinny plate. We both ordered house red wine to go with the meal and it was fine, better than expected. A slightly smaller serving than usual, perhaps, but no real complaint. Extremely friendly and very attentive service added to our enjoyment of this light but satisfying meal for two. Overall, a real pleasure, and just over $40 before tip. I want to return sometime and order that ossobuco, but also at a minimum try their other raviolis. If their cheese ravioli at happy hour is any indication, those on the dinner menu must be real knockouts. read more

The design of the place is unique and fun, looks like you're walking around Italy. Really cool water fountains and sandblasted windows too. The eggplant appetizer and burrata were amazing. Had the BEST fettuccine Alfredo I've ever had in my life here it's so incredible! We eat out a lot in San Diego and this place blew us away with both the food and the service! It was our first time and i vow to make it a regular stop. Our reservation was for outside but when we got out there they had the heaters blasting and they easily moved us indoors/the hostess even suggested it. I ordered the lasagna (a special) and they make it fresh and i had to wait for the newest batch (it wasn't even long, i think our total time dining in and out was 1.5 hours) so our waiter brought extra bread and a round of drinks on the house. Then complimentary limoncello at the end of the meal as well. My husbands stuffed gnocchi was the biggest ive ever seen! My lasagna was amazing as well.
