Went for Dinner for a party of seven on a Saturday night. All the appys and Main courses were tasty and well presented. The focaccia type bread served with flavored olive oil was good. It is a byob and our wines were opened and poured right away. Started with mussels and the prosciutto di Parma plate. The first time I came here was definitely 5-star worthy, but SHEESH this place has changed!! I think it's great that they've expanded (and added a bar!) but the feel isn't the same. The music is loud as hell - all covers of Top 40 hits. The service this time around is horrible - waited 15min for water/menus, another 10 for the hostess to realize we hadn't ordered, and no one really checked in on us for the rest of the night. I'm so used to this place being an intimate place, with great service & relaxed atmosphere, delicious traditional Italian food.. I'm just not feeling it right now for our family birthday dinner. The hostess made us feel unwelcomed but the chef for the rodizio was the nicest guy. Good selection of meats all done with flair and knowledge. My personal favorite was the lamb. Filet mignon was also done right. Nice for people who want variety and a lot of meat. read more

I'm a fan of Il Caffone in that it's a good place to go if your looking for a "bring your own" and arent in the mood for something fancy... A night when you dont feel like dressing up for some decent food. It's a great place to have a couple glasses of wine and eat a simple Italian meal. It's not the best Italian but it's certainly not even close to the worst. Portion sizes are good and you definitely won't leave hungry. Your pocket will still be nice and full. We went for the first time this past Sat evening to the Rodizio side of the restaurant, service was excellent , very detailed oriented. The Rodizio was really good but we ate so fast that we could not taste all the meats , considering the appetizer we order plus the great pasta dishes that came along with the meal. The owner of the restaurant was very nice he introduce himself to make sure everything was okay with us and if the food was upto stardard , he was so concern he wave the sangria off our bill. Our meals were delicious but doubt I would ever go back due to a large party of about 15 women that was seated near us that was outrageously loud, literally screaming over each other, clapping and even dropping a few F-bombs. Even after commenting to our server about the excessive loudness all he did was apologize. I did ask to speak to the manager but he told us he was the cook and busy in the kitchen. We noticed other patrons also being annoyed by this loudness of this large party. The management should have addressed this situation because this group prevented our group from even being able to hear each other. We cut our visit short opting to pass on coffee, cappuccino and dessert because we couldn't wait to leave. It's a shame because had the management politely advise the large loud group to act accordingly it would have been an enjoyable meal at a nice restaurant. The restaurant with dim lighting truly lends itself to a lovely dinner for two but if you take a chance on going there, do so knowing a large group could ruin your dinner. read more

We go to Il Cafone very often, and tonight we had a great meal.They have parking behind the restaurant and it's BYOB with a WinePro on the corner to help you choose a good wine. The homemade gnocchi is hands down the best I have ever had. The chef makes them fresh everyday. They are like little potatoe marshmellows and he prepares them with a vodka sauce mixed with crab meat, shrimps and scallops. I have also had the basil encrusted swordfish which is delicious as well. I had deep fried ice cream with coconut and caramel for dessert and Man Alive, that is delicious!! It is worth trying for yourself. read more

Went there for a family outing and loved their homemade bread, i had walnut and cinnamon and it was delicious with melted butter. Such a wonderful experience at this restaurant. Came with my fiancé for dinner and was blown away. The food was spectacular and very nice portion sizes enough to take some home if you want. We didn't have any to take home though it was too good! Ambience was great, very classic Italian feel. Don't expect to come here and be out the door in 30-45 minutes. Other reviews comment on "slow" service that's not it they want to give you time to enjoy your meal. Excellent food with very friendly service! We were VERY pleasantly surprised by this place! Tried it on a family member's recommendation and we had a large family group going. We had made a reservation for late lunch, but then found we were going to arrive early - they said no problem and got us in immediately. We had also heard it was BYOB, but when we arrived they were able to serve liquor. Regardless, they were ok with opening our bottle and serving it to us. The service was very friendly and attentive. They are willing to make whatever changes you like to the menu. Most of us had various apps that were all very good, but the real specialty is their homemade pasta. I had the rigatoni with roasted eggplant, tomatoes and mozzarella, but I substituted their fresh tagliatelle - wow, scrumptious and huge portions! Plenty to take home for a second meal. This was the case with everyone's entrees; they are very generous with their portions. My brother-in-law wanted eggplant parm, and although it was not on the menu they had no problem making it for him. Everyone enjoyed their food and would highly recommend this place. All our dishes were good, but I would always recommend the fresh pasta dishes - you can't go wrong with fresh pasta! read more

We started frequenting Il Cafone about 6 months ago and have never been disappointed in the quality of food or service. The nightly specials are plentiful, so we rarely end up ordering off the regular menu. However, if you get there early enough, they do offer a Sunset Special for $12.99 that includes a house salad and an ample choice of regular menu items. Some of our favorites include a salad special with grilled mushrooms and crispy calamari, homemade gnocchi and chicken parmigiania. Most of the fish specials have also been very good. This was the best italian food we have had in a long time. The interior is dated, but the family owned atmosphere and home cooked food was a hit. I had clams, white sauce and linguini. The clams were about an hour old! My wife has the most delicate veal that melted in her mouth. My girls had spag/meatballs. Have been here before, food is ok. Went there on a Saturday at 7PM to celebrate my wife's birthday. The hostess tried to squeeze us in a corner but she wasn't able to pull out the chairs it was so jammed. She told me that they had no tables for two only tables for four. She just said sorry and let us walk out. Guess an empty table for four is better than an occupied table by two. It's tough to get me overly excited about an Italian restaurant because there are so many good ones in CT; however, I went on Yelp and found this place that was very close to my hotel. I read the reviews and I was sold since it was only two traffic lights away. One person said that he travels 20 miles from an airport hotel to eat there when he is at the New Jersey airport, so I just had to give it a shot. I guess I didn't read the reviews too carefully though, because when I arrived I found that it was BYOB. I arrived at 7:15PM and the place was very busy. There were a lot of Italians in the place, and big parties going on. The guys sitting across from me looked like very serious dudes. When they thought I was listening to them, they started speaking Italian. LOL. Mafia dons? Customers were moved to the party room next door. There is no parking lot for the restaurant/trattoria so you have to park on the street. It took me awhile to find a spot. I was told by my hotel staff that I was in a very safe area, but I was still nervous about parking on the street. I ordered an unsweetened ice tea and decided to go with their Caesare Salad special with fried calamari as an APP, for my main course I had Taglia Trasteverina which included calamari, mussels, olives, artichokes in a light tomato sauce over homemade tagliatelle. Every thing was very good. The place was casual, family friendly and very noisy. No problem for me; I sort of enjoyed the atmosphere. How I wish I had a nice Chianti to go with my meal. The bill was $28.25, a little steep for one, but they gave me tons of mussels and calamari, so I can't complain. I was stuffed when I left. The waiter asked if I wanted some dessert. "No room inside," I said. While I was eating I noticed a few desserts being served and they looked very decadent. My only complaint besides the parking was that my entree was too salty for my taste. Then again, I am particularly sensitive to salt. I should have said something beforehand, I guess. I don't want to get into a specific medical issue, but I had a tough time last night because of the excess salt. Strange that I only started tasting the excessive salt near the end of the meal. I don't get it. They have salt and pepper on the table so that we can add it by ourselves. I see no need for this to happen. read more

This restaurant has been our family Christmas Eve gathering place for many years, however this year will probably be our last. We always make a reservation and look forward to a feast of a dinner, until this year. When we went there this year the place was packed (not surprising since it is a good local place to eat) but the staff was non existent the entire time we were there. Food was slow to come out and was missing sides. Trying to ask the server for help results in a wry smile and a bunch of head shaking. Apparently, there is somewhat of a language barrier here, as none of the servers spoke English. It looked like they were throwing things together last minute due to their inability to keep up with demand. Portions were small and skimpy (something this restaurant is NOT known for) I ordered rodizo with my brother. It took the rodizo server too long to come with each serving. I was literally starving waiting for the next course. The meats were overly salty and dry and the man serving them was very stingy with the portions. If I wanted two pieces of meat he got annoyed. It's supposed to be 36.00 all you can eat, and at that price, I plan to eat! I only had a few pieces of meat and chicken for this price. He left us hanging most of the time and after about five visits he never came back with any more food! Totally NOT worth it. They are supposed to bring a slice of flaming pineapple for desert and he never did. My brother was so upset he went to inform the manager. He came from Florida and was anticipating a great meal based on what I told him. After he informed management about the issues,the rodizo server came back to our table and proceeded to scream at us in Spanish for five straight minutes! We were all shocked and upset that the lack of personnel working was our fault somehow? How unprofessional! I quickly paid the $230.00 bill and we left without saying another word. Needless to say I will not be returning here for dinner or holidays. My mother was disappointed, my kids were still hungry, and I was flat out annoyed. The staff is rude and slow. The rodizo used to be awesome, now it's like scraps from the kitchen. If you want true rodizo head to newark and visit one of the many restaurants on ferry street. Let me start by saying that my sister deemed this as "her favorite restaurant" Therefor when it was time to plan her bridal shower it was one of the first places we checked out. We drove over 45 mins to go and meet with one of the owners who was very friendly. He showed us the party room and different menu options, and confirmed that there was "no minimum" of people needed to reserve the room since the party was being held outside of normal business hours. *We double and triple checked this being that we have a small family and most places require a minimum that we could not meet* We booked and gave a deposit and said we would have around 30 people. The option of menu that we picked was $23.95/person, that was for salad (which was terrible) penne vodka app (which was great), an option of a few different meat and fish dishes and coffee. We would then pay extra for any soda, alcohol or desserts. Sounded great! A few weeks before the shower I spent days trying to call to confirm the date, pricing and amount of people, but it was impossible to get someone because of the odd hours. They also went on vacation for a week and started to close on Mondays for the summer. I finally got someone and they told me the price is $25.95/person and acted as though I completely made up the $23.95 even though I had paper in hand with that printed price. Reluctantly they offered to honor it. So the day comes, party starts at 2pm and we are told we can come for 1pm to set up. It was quarter after and no one was there. Finally we got someone on the phone and he says he just got in and will be with us shortly. We stand at the door waiting, 3 women with about a dozen boxes in hand. He finally opens with no hello, but instead charges through us with tables and chairs to set up the patio outside. I was dumbfounded at the rudeness. I assumed he was staff rushing to get his work done. Only later did I learn he was an owner (brother of the one I originally met with) The whole party we were uncomfortable because of his bad attitude. We were afraid to do or ask anything. It was as if he were doing us some sort of favor and not as though we were paying customers. We had 21 people that came and ate. We even had someone bring their daughter and someone come late, they did not eat because they did not want us to have to pay for two extra meals last minute. As the party came to an end I spent time helping them clear the tables and clean up, I waitress so I know how it can be to want to get out on time. I then met with the owner to take care of the bill. He had a price listed for 30 people. I explained we only had 21. He proceeded to rudely tell me he "would have never opened his establishment for a party of 21 people!" if that was the case then THERE SHOULD BE A MINIMUM or I should have been told when he was taking the orders, and we could have taken 9 dishes home for our families. I wouldn't mind as much if I was paying for something that I was actually getting! He was disgustingly rude when we tried to compromise on the amount of people he was charging us for. He also overcharged us for the amount of sangria pitchers that we ordered but we didn't even mention that being that there was no compromising with this man. I simply told him I would be sure to never bother him with our business again. Sadly disappointed at how it was all handled. I should have made sure to get a contract up front so that we were all on the same page. Obviously after now reading these reviews I see customer service is not this establishments strong suit. Everything we have had there is good, such as the bread and olive oil, calamari, fettucine bolognese, chicken parm, sole, etc. Much of their food compares favorably to some of the better restaurants in Italy. She was in love with her pasta dish and the meat selection that came my way was cooked to perfection and beyond tasty. We have been going to Il Cafone regularly since 1999, when they were just starting out. This is an ideal place to also entertain clients, too. YES, they do have parking in the rear. The food is always consistently tasty and well prepared. We recommend everything on their menu. Roberto, the owner makes sure that clients are always satisfied and so does Danilo, the maitre d'. The entire staff is always friendly and accomodating. Many times we have given gift certificates to this delightful restaurant and people have been so happy going there. This is one of those spots that you'd wish did not need to have a web presence. You don't want too many people to know about it, not just because there's limited space and seating but because of pride. I take pride in knowing certain spots. For real Italian food, I had Osterio Giotto in Montclair, which is the antithesis of this place simply because it has crowds of people waiting outside + it's now closed. Then, there's my non-red sauce authentic, high end Italian spot in Gramercy Park where you can find Hedge Fund CEOs and the Editor for NY Times having lunch. Then, there's this place. I did not discover it on my own. I was taken here. I had to meet up with a lawyer friend of mine who grew up in urban NJ in an Italian American enclave. He's a high end, 3 piece suit, white shoe lawyer these days, so he only eats quality. Now, this place is not 5 star ambience. It's just top notch, real deal, authentic Italian food.
