My beautiful 11-year old son needed a real sports mouthguard now that he is getting older and I liked the name - Treasured Pearls, indeed! But wow - what great service! Front desk staff was the perfect balance between friendly, efficient, and professional. Since I was there, they asked if I wanted a cleaning and the dentist did the cleaning herself, rather than an assistant - and even did the cancer screening along the jaw/tongue -- talk about thorough. She effectively conveyed to my child how he can brush his teeth better - no one has made sense to him before we came here. Finding this place certainly put this mom's mind to rest. I've had three or four dentists in the past 4 years due to constantly moving, but Treasured Pearls Dentistry is hands down the most professional and accommodating practice I've ever been to. I've been going to Treasured Pearls for a few years now, and have had nothing but pleasant and easy experiences with them. Tamara, Octavia, Dr. Barnes, etc. - the entire team there is great! I like that they are women-run, always helpful and efficient, a welcoming environment, and the chairs in the waiting room are actually comfy. Also, the music they play is pretty good, not your typical dental office music. Not even a little bit surprised to see that Treasured Pearls has 5 stars. Let's start with the fact that they never double-book, so when you walk in, the staff are ready for you. I have only ever had to wait when an emergency patient took priority over my cleaning. Rather than having the hygienist give you a cleaning and then getting a quick cursory exam from the dentist, Dr. Barnes will do your cleaning. They have computerized everything, so that your records are easily accessible and update-able. Cathy, the receptionist is so warm and nice, she puts you at ease as soon as you walk in (in fact, she always greets me by name). She also is great at explaining any questions you might have about billing. This is where I refer all my friends and colleagues, and I hope that I never have to find another dentist. read more

This is the best dentist I've ever had! Not only is Dr. Barnes great at what she does, but her entire team is as well. They are all so friendly, professional, knowledgable, and take the time to walk you through your procedure or answer any questions you may have. I had extensive amounts of dental work within the last year, was there practically every month for about 6 months to get it all done (don't wish that upon anyone), but every time I went, Dr. Barnes and her team made me feel so calm instead of riddled with anxiety. I was way over-due to see a dentist for a cleaning (I've been living in DC but was still waiting to see the dentist until I went home for vacations.), and happened upon Treasured Pearls through my insurance provider's website. I saw the few but very positive reviews so I thought I would give them a try. I made an appointment the same afternoon because there had been a cancellation, which couldn't have been more convenient. Very glad I saw Dr. Barnes and picked Treasured Pearls! The staff was very polite and positive, even when I had silly questions about the forms. Since I had to schedule another visit to replace a 15 year-old filling, I was also given an estimate of how much my insurance would cover and the "worst case scenario" that I would have to pay out of pocket for the filing replacement. After having an x-ray taken, Dr. Barnes conducted my entire cleaning from start to finish, including the flossing (which I normally have experienced is done by hygienists). She explained what she was doing when checking my gum health and explained what the different numbers meant for each tooth. Both she and the hygienist were also very positive, friendly, and professional throughout the whole visit. Additional plus: the office actually smelled really nice (not like mint or toothpaste) and they had some nice jazzy/soulful acoustic music playing. read more

PART 2 I take some time to process everything and after consulting with a few other professionals, I decide not to continue with the practice. 1/8/17 I call the office in reference to my 1/17 appointment and cancel everything except having my crown inserted. 01/17/18 | 8:45 AM I arrive for my appointment and I am given an Account History Report with a balance of $239 and payment is requested. I see that the $200 broken appointment fee is still on the account. When I ask Pam about it, she tells me I said I needed to think about it and she never heard back from me. I explain that my husband transferred his balance to cover the $100, which she and I had discussed that same day. She tells me that she didn't know what the $100 was for and additionally, the offer was only valid if I continued with the practice and since I canceled my appointment, the system added back the $100. Now we have a problem. First she tells me that the fee wasn't adjusted because she didn't hear back from me. Next I'm told the "system" added it back because I canceled my appointment. She agrees to accept $139 from me so that my appointment can get started but tells me that I need to speak to Dr. Barnes. Dr. Barnes comes in and it is as if I never emailed her. We chat about the holidays, family, she checks my extraction area, gives me some magazines to read while I wait for the cement to set on my crown. Pam comes in and asks if I talked to Dr. Barnes. I literally have cotton in my mouth. I tell her no and she comes back again to let me know that Dr. Barnes is in a procedure but reiterates that I will need to talk to her about my balance. The hygienist inserts my crown and tells me that I am done. I find it kind of odd that Dr. Barnes doesn't come and check it (especially since cost over $1300) but I figure maybe this is the service you receive when you are no longer a patient. When I get home, I send Dr. Barnes an email requesting that the $100 balance be removed from my account based on Pam's initial offer. She responds and states that if it was not clear that cancelling my next appointment would reinstate the remaining balance, she understood and asked how I would like to proceed. This is problematic. I cancelled my appointment a week before the scheduled date. Why would I have incurred any charge? I responded and explained that the Account History Report does not reflect any changes or adjustments at all to the broken appointment fee and the only date it is referenced is 12/20. It is difficult to follow the logic that the "computer" added back $100 to my account since it is not shown on the report and the waiving of 1/2 of the fee was never processed either. Additionally, Pam initially told me the fee wasn't changed because she didn't hear back from me. Since I was told that $100 (1/2 of the broken appointment fee) would be waived and I was not given any parameters, limitations, or exceptions to this, I humbly requested that my account be cleared, and the current $100 balance be removed. 1/22 Dr. Barnes responds and states the printable version of what patients receive is not the real-time balance activity that is viewable on their end. She concludes the email and tells me that Pam will try to extract where my account is at this point to make sure that the collections agency does not already have it in their system. Her last sentence reads as follows "Please respectfully know --that from here on out, I will no longer be responding to any emails regarding this issue." I let her know that I requested a print-out of the "real-time balance activity that is viewable on their end" from Pam, and once it is received, I will direct any further inquiries directly to her. I also expressed concern and questioned how could my account possibly be with a collections agency since my last bill dated 12/19 was due 1/18 and had been paid in full. I am not a dentist, but I have an MBA and have worked as an IT Consultant with IBM (so I understand how software applications are programmed), a Credit Analyst with Bank of America (so I understand that an account must be in default before it can be referred to collections), serve as an Adjunct Professor teaching Customer Service (this will make a great case study for my students), and I am a landlord and a business owner (so I know the value of relationships and that policies sometimes need to assessed based on individual circumstances/situations). My treatment plan totaled well over $10k, not to mention I have 5 other members of my family that use dental services, a network of over 5k connections on social media, and hold an officer's position with a national organization for mothers with a reach of almost 100k people. The fact that $200 was valued more than my continued business and/or referrals, was disappointing, especially since I didn't break my appointment. Avoid this place unless you have an unlimited budget and no interest in finding out what Kari Barnes, DDS, is charging. My experience reminded me of the old "bait and switch" routine. I made an appointment for a cleaning. I verified at the front desk I was there ONLY for a cleaning, Then - as a technician started taking unasked for and unscheduled x-rays - I inquired whether they were included in the price of the cleaning, She said, "Yes." Upon checking out, I learned that not only was that statement not true, but also because, said the office manager, the x-ray technician did not know, I was forced to pay nearly $100 extra. Somehow the x-ray technician was not made available to verify what she said. Oh, and never, ever. bother asking Dr. Barnes what something costs. She claims not to know. First business owner I ever met who does not know what they charge. The whole practice smacks of what some might call a possible scam operation. read more

I cannot explain how grateful I am to Dr. Barnes. I chipped my tooth and was in so much pain. Also, I was dreading going to a dentist. I called early in the morning and got an appointment a few hours later. I ended up needing a procedure which she was able to do later in that same afternoon. The procedure was almost painless. In addition, the staff are all incredibly nice. Dr. Barnes is a very sincere and compassionate person. The receptionist and hygenist were all pleasant and Dr. Barnes went out of her way to ease my anxiety and answer all my questions. Like many, I was fearful of the dentist due to a childhood experience. However, going to Treasured Pearls and having multiple positive experiences here, I now look forward to going to the dentist! I scheduled an appointment with Dr. Barnes because I recently started a new job, got the good dental insurance (finally! hooray!) and was way overdue for a cleaning/check-up...it had been about three years. The staff were very polite and friendly over the phone when I scheduled the appointment and called me a few days prior to my appointment to remind me. To preface this review- I have SO much anxiety about the dentist because of some traumatic experiences as a kid and so I am always fairly nervous for even routine dental appointments. I research dentists extensively beforehand and chose Dr. Barnes because of her high ratings on Yelp and the positive reviews. I was not disappointed in my choice! The staff overall at Treasured Pearls are very sweet and friendly. I didn't wait more than 10 minutes for my appointment to start despite they were all coming back from their lunch hour, noon-1 p.m. The hygienist was very sweet, very clearly explained to me the procedure of the x-ray and set me up in the chair. Then Dr. Barnes came out and introduced herself and proceeded to review my x-rays, talk to me about the few concerns I had, and did the entire cleaning herself with the assistance of the hygienist- which was awesome. She was also very sweet, explained things clearly to me as she went along. Much to my surprise, I had a clean bill of dental health! Whew! Dr. Barnes and the hygienist were very kind and considerate of the fact that I was (clearly) nervous. It was about an hour & a few minutes and I was all done! Things I like: the office is centrally located downtown, a few walking blocks from my office, which made this very easy to do on my lunch break. The office staff are very friendly and efficient, Dr. Barnes & the hygienist are both very friendly and knowledgeable and made an experience that is normally very nerve-wracking to me a very easy and stress-less one. I will definitely be keeping Dr. Barnes as my regular dentist and recommended her to my friends, coworkers and anyone who needs a dentist rec! I highly recommend her! I had a less than stellar experience here, despite really wanting to like them. My initial experience was quite good, but over the years the quality of service and my experience has deteriorated and I've recently decided to leave the practice and take my business elsewhere. The Good - Dr Barnes is professional and caring; in the early years she took time to know you and your family and often did treatments herself. That's changed (see below). - The location is quite convenient for those that work downtown, and one of the reasons I chose this place. The Bad - More recently, they overbook and often times keep you waiting for significant amounts of time - Due to overbooking, it's felt more like a factory with mutiple interns treating you and sometimes you don't get to see Dr. Barnes at all - They often over treat our teeth and are constantly trying to up sell more unnecessary treatments/services - Please review your bill before you leave. Like a previous poster, I was repeatedly charged late fees (without being notified) even though I was within the appointment time and was treated as scheduled. It didn't make sense to charge for a missed appointment when you were actually treated. It also seems unfair given that you often have to wait to be treated. There was one case in particular, where they called me to tell me to come in for a semi annual clean up and scheduled me in. When I was 5 mins late I was charged a late fee (for an appointment I didn't even think was necessary). When I disputed the charges it was promptly sent to collections. I've never experienced such draconian measures with any other medical practitioner in my life. It seems they're targeting frivolous missed appointments as a potential revenue stream for their business model. - They changed receptionists from Cathy (who was always warm and welcoming) to Pamela Barnes who is simply bad news. I think Pam is also a relative, so virtually untouchable. Someone should let her know that smiles are free and that a patient is more than a paycheck. I registered a few private complaints about her, but have seen little improvement. She's also the main executioner of the aggressive scheduling and fee policy mentioned above. I only hope this frank feedback will prompt some introspection and improvement. I wish them all the best. read more

I found Dr. Barnes through my insurance portal and looked at the yelp reviews prior to making an appointment. I saw a couple responses saying they had terrible customer service and that Dr. Barnes can come off as "rough" but I decided to still go since 1. It's very close to my office and 2. I love an all black staff, especially dentist. My first visit was great, her staff was very friendly and genuine. Dr. Barnes took the time to explain all her observations and concerns and allowed me to ask as many questions as I wanted. She was very patient and kind. Pam also helped me understand my insurance breakdown and everything! My second visit was for 2 teeth extractions. Firstly, I loved that every staff member remembered my name and my procedure. I was very nervous about the procedure itself and Octavia and Dr. Barnes were extremely helpful in calming my nerves. Dr. Barnes also explained what to expect and demonstrated which was helpful (for me at least). The procedure didn't take very long and they both made sure I understood all the do's and don't for post care. I also appreciated that the very next day, Dr. Barnes calls me to check in on how I was feeling and if I had any questions. I absolutely love this practice. The office staff and the dentist contacted me back about my original experience and were very friendly, apologized for that I was unhappy with the composite, and offered to redo it for no additional charge. I went in, got settled in, and the dentist made sure this time that at the end, all of my concerns were addressed. She was friendly and receptive to feedback. Sure, the first composite may have been a little bit of a mishap, but the customer service and overall experience was worth it. And hey, they always have some snazzy music on too! read more
