    Trevino's Barbacoa
    Rudy R.

It was Sunday I just got off work, and had been craving tamales since Avatar Friday. I make a stop at one place ask how much for a dozen of Tamales the man behind the counter says $8.59. $8.59 that's way to expensive for me. So I exit drive down Nacogdoches some more, and stop at Trevino's Barbacoa go inside and the overhead menu board says Tamales $6.49. Awesome I thought the man behind the counter was busy helping other customers with there barbacoa orders. Which I must say looked really good. But, I'm not here for barbacoa I here for the tamales. Finally my turn to order; "What kind of tamales do you have" the man informs me pork, spicy pork, beef, and bean. I say my order "I'll have a dozen of pork the man opens a steaming ice chest and pulls out a piping hot nicely wrapped dozen of tamales. My eyes get big; big like Ralphie on Christmas Story when he finally gets his BB gun. I pay for the tamales run to the car, and right away open them and grab one. Wait I have to snap a local pic before I devour my first dozen of tamales for Christmas Season 09. Snap!! Then the first bite I thought good; not the best. But it sure does beat driving to another side of town waiting in a Black Friday type line only to buy $9 dozen of tamales that were really not the type you wanted. So, I gave Trevino's Barbacoa Tamales 3 stars for being at the right place, right time, and right price.

1 pound of all meat goodness!

Barbacoa excellent. Tamales were a little spicy. I like spice but I am looking for holiday party. Gotta find mild.

I was really impressed with this place! The all meat barbacoa was clean and delicious. The tortillas, salsa, and pico rounded out the meal.

This time I saw a review of the pho and it is recommended to ask for ribs and oxtail which I did that. I just got back from Vietnam not too long ago and let me tell you this is hands down the best pho in San Antonio! The owner is so so friendly! He took me to the kitchen showing me how he cook the broth. We had a chat about Vietnam and the food and different style of pho between north and south. At the end of my meal he brought out snacks and insisted on me taking a hand full of them! I believe this pho is only offered on weekends and make sure to ask for the mix. For a moment they thought I was ordering one of each This supermarket and cafe truly give you a Vietnam experience without the need to get on a plane. Highly recommend

Pros: - Pretty good selection for San Antonio…read more - Freshness varies relative to when you visit vs. when they got a shipment, but it can be decent! Cons: - Not fully stocked .. ever?? There's always gaps in the shelves from sold out products.. but there's probably a serviceable substitute available. Also prices aren't always clearly displayed - Asian grocery store smell (or maybe it's a pro if you're feeling nostalgic haha) This store leans Vietnamese and Chinese but, true to its name, it also carries a decent selection of other Asian products (like Japanese and Korean, I'm personally not as familiar with Thai so can't speak on that). It's great to have fresh Asian produce that's reasonably priced - i.e. $1.50-2.50 / lb for leafy greens. $2 for enoki mushrooms. There's also a strong seafood section with live fish. Location is super convenient off of I-35. Parking is easy. I come here once a month or so to restock my Asian groceries.

Half of the market was closed off, but something new that popped up near the front of the store was a coffee/smoothie bar. We stopped in for a quick to go order of a coffee, pastry, and smoothie. I loved the fact that there is an option to make your own. I was able to choose my base, 2 fruit options, and a veggie. I chose - blueberry, strawberry, (comes with a banana), spinach, and almond milk. Perfect! Healthy and fresh. The girl behind the counter was friendly and accommodating. There's also a gelato bar. Curious to see what's new when renovations are done!

So they just re did a portion of the store to expand their ready made foods. My husband and I go in to get a couple of sandwiches. We've done it before for little weekend picnics, but my bread was so tough today it wasn't really pleasant. It felt like it had been left in the fridge section for too long. Then we knew the brisket and prepared meats weren't going to be ready until 4, we had asked one of the employees there and they told us it'd be ready at 4. We ordered a couple of sides for dinner and both of the sides were labeled incorrectly. One of them triple the price of what the item should have costed. We came back at 4 and then were informed the brisket might be out actually closer to 5. What? Why tell us 4 and then push it to another hour? We decided to leave and check out and at the checkout lane I noticed they started putting the meat out?? Did they just not want to serve us?? Their customer service specifically was rude but our cashier who helped us with the overpriced ticketed items was nice and helpful. It just doesn't feel good to be treated with disrespect and to basically be lied to because the same guy who said it wouldn't be out until 5 literally started to put out the meat as soon as we walked away. Weird, random, and I hated it.

I've been coming here for years, and thinking back I don't think I've ever had a bad experience. They have the friendliest staff ever and they are always super helpful when I can't find something. They truly go above and beyond and will even check the back for you when you are looking for something. One of my favorite things about Trader Joe's is their flower section. They have some of the freshest and most beautiful flowers, and they offer the best prices on flowers in San Antonio. I've compared them to local flower wholesalers and TJ still beats them. If you are buying a large amount of flowers make sure to get some of their free buckets which are located by the entrance to the store. It just makes it easier to transport all your flowers. Besides the amazing flowers, their unique seasonal items are always great. I love to discover new snacks or sauces that you can't find at other grocery stores. Another favorite section for me is their cheese section. They have a small but mighty section of cheeses at great prices. Overall, I love Trader Joes and always have the best shopping experience when coming to this location!

This commissary tends to have better options than the one on FT Sam. I have found a lot more of the staple items that I like to get, here at Randolph. Also, any of the times that I have shopped here have not been too crowded, which is nice. The store is very well stocked & clean. The layout is not too bad either & better than other commissaries that I have shopped in. Generally speaking, commissary pricing is usually close to what you would pay out on the normal economy, however I have seen some items that have been higher than say, Walmart or HEB. But, the trade off is that you're not paying tax on your groceries here, so it kind of evens out at times. I also appreciate the fact that the times that I have been here, the self-checkout line has not been insanely long. I imagine it probably can be though, depending on what time of day you are shopping. Fortunately, I live about equal distance between here & FT Sam, so I can easily go to either, since they both have different offerings. However, this will definitely be my go to.
