    Trevino's Barbacoa
    Rudy R.

It was Sunday I just got off work, and had been craving tamales since Avatar Friday. I make a stop at one place ask how much for a dozen of Tamales the man behind the counter says $8.59. $8.59 that's way to expensive for me. So I exit drive down Nacogdoches some more, and stop at Trevino's Barbacoa go inside and the overhead menu board says Tamales $6.49. Awesome I thought the man behind the counter was busy helping other customers with there barbacoa orders. Which I must say looked really good. But, I'm not here for barbacoa I here for the tamales. Finally my turn to order; "What kind of tamales do you have" the man informs me pork, spicy pork, beef, and bean. I say my order "I'll have a dozen of pork the man opens a steaming ice chest and pulls out a piping hot nicely wrapped dozen of tamales. My eyes get big; big like Ralphie on Christmas Story when he finally gets his BB gun. I pay for the tamales run to the car, and right away open them and grab one. Wait I have to snap a local pic before I devour my first dozen of tamales for Christmas Season 09. Snap!! Then the first bite I thought good; not the best. But it sure does beat driving to another side of town waiting in a Black Friday type line only to buy $9 dozen of tamales that were really not the type you wanted. So, I gave Trevino's Barbacoa Tamales 3 stars for being at the right place, right time, and right price.

Barbacoa excellent. Tamales were a little spicy. I like spice but I am looking for holiday party. Gotta find mild.

I was really impressed with this place! The all meat barbacoa was clean and delicious. The tortillas, salsa, and pico rounded out the meal.

Half of the market was closed off, but something new that popped up near the front of the store was a coffee/smoothie bar. We stopped in for a quick to go order of a coffee, pastry, and smoothie. I loved the fact that there is an option to make your own. I was able to choose my base, 2 fruit options, and a veggie. I chose - blueberry, strawberry, (comes with a banana), spinach, and almond milk. Perfect! Healthy and fresh. The girl behind the counter was friendly and accommodating. There's also a gelato bar. Curious to see what's new when renovations are done!

I've been coming here for years, and thinking back I don't think I've ever had a bad experience. They have the friendliest staff ever and they are always super helpful when I can't find something. They truly go above and beyond and will even check the back for you when you are looking for something. One of my favorite things about Trader Joe's is their flower section. They have some of the freshest and most beautiful flowers, and they offer the best prices on flowers in San Antonio. I've compared them to local flower wholesalers and TJ still beats them. If you are buying a large amount of flowers make sure to get some of their free buckets which are located by the entrance to the store. It just makes it easier to transport all your flowers. Besides the amazing flowers, their unique seasonal items are always great. I love to discover new snacks or sauces that you can't find at other grocery stores. Another favorite section for me is their cheese section. They have a small but mighty section of cheeses at great prices. Overall, I love Trader Joes and always have the best shopping experience when coming to this location!

I opted for a two meat with fatty brisket and ribs with collard greens and brisket beans as sides. There was almost a $300 up charge for the ribs but I decided to try it. Where do I start? Price or Taste? Taste. I thought every thing tasted pretty good. I was surprised that the greens had flavor but I really enjoyed them. Normally, in grocery stores, they usually taste as if they were poured from the can with no doctoring. The brisket beans were flavorful. The star of the show was the meat. I like my sauce with vinegar but they were out do I got sweet on the side. Honestly, I didn't use the sauce. The meat was tender and well seasoned. I tasted the sauce and found it really good. Not overly sweet but just right. I probably would dip instead of pour if I decide to try it with the meat next time. So this meal cost me just over $20. I found that a bit pricey for three ribs and a couple pieces of brisket but I've paid more for badly cooked food in this city so I'll leave that be. Service was quick and fact. I don't have any ambiance to rate since I went took the drive thru route. Overall, I enjoyed it and I'll be back again.

When the manager, Alexis, was called over to help, she immediately took an aggressive tone with the customer instead of approaching the situation with patience and professionalism. Alexis spoke loudly enough that other customers around us turned to look, and told the woman she would just have to find another way to pay rather than making any real effort to resolve the issue calmly. The woman, who is Black, looked visibly embarrassed. The interaction concerned me enough that I felt I was watching racially motivated treatment. Whether or not that was the intent, the behavior was inappropriate and unprofessional. The situation was eventually resolved and the woman was able to complete her purchase, but no customer should have to feel humiliated in a checkout line in front of their children. Even the checker looked embarrassed by what happened. I told him his manager needs to treat people with more kindness. HEB has a great reputation in this community, and that interaction did not reflect it.

This commissary tends to have better options than the one on FT Sam. I have found a lot more of the staple items that I like to get, here at Randolph. Also, any of the times that I have shopped here have not been too crowded, which is nice. The store is very well stocked & clean. The layout is not too bad either & better than other commissaries that I have shopped in. Generally speaking, commissary pricing is usually close to what you would pay out on the normal economy, however I have seen some items that have been higher than say, Walmart or HEB. But, the trade off is that you're not paying tax on your groceries here, so it kind of evens out at times. I also appreciate the fact that the times that I have been here, the self-checkout line has not been insanely long. I imagine it probably can be though, depending on what time of day you are shopping. Fortunately, I live about equal distance between here & FT Sam, so I can easily go to either, since they both have different offerings. However, this will definitely be my go to.
