    Consome is where it's at.

I stopped here for a quick lunch while in San Antonio. I was in the mood for birrieria and the reviews here looked great. It's in a small strip mall with plenty of parking. The inside was surprisingly bright and airy. The menu has so many tasty items but to make the decision easier they do have daily specials until 1 pm for around $13 or other combo meals all under $20 which includes a drink. You order at the counter and just a few minutes later your order is brought to you. I got the special for Tuesday which consisted of 3 birrieria quesadillas with consome, basically liquid gold. What I love about Mexican food is the toppings and sauces to personalize your dish even further. Adding that squeeze of lime, some fresh cilantro and onions along with some house made salsas elevates each bite. It was stuffed full of meat and cheese and dunking it in the consome added additional flavor you didn't know it needed. I ended up drinking the rest of it because I couldn't let it go to waste. There was so much food I could only eat half of it. Service was quick and friendly. It's not far from the airport so a nice option before or after a flight to avoid having to eat at the airport.

PROS: * Delicious food specializing in the popular birria tacos and stew. * Friendly staff and accommodating proprietors. * Open seating area with fun ambiance music (today's was 80s, but they also play Mexican artists). * Though a limited birria themed menu, they feature generous portions and a few other staples like tamales, cafe de olla and tamales (see photos). CONS: * No complaints, but I think table service would be a nice touch for dinner. This was my first experience at a birria specialized establishment. But my brothers quite enjoy this establish and we will be back (when I'm back in town). Special note: my mom forgot her phone there on my visit. We didn't discover it until we got home 5 minutes before closing time. My mom offered a tip for the wait staff or the proprietor that waited almost 30 min after closing, but they respectfully declined and were only happy we were repeat patrons. The five stars are for the food and the service.

Such an excellent birria spot in SA! Generously sized tacos with a delicious consóme, and their meal combos come with drinks and all of the toppings needed. A small, genuine spot with tasty, homemade menu items. I will definitely visit again when in town! OVERVIEW: A great spot for birria or other items like street tacos, tamales (next door), or a unique item like birria ramen! A bit pricy for lunch but honestly so worth it. Note that they are only open until 3pm daily, so don't miss out! QUICK FACTS: - Parking? Yes, a regular lot. - Daily lunch specials? Yes, M-F! FOOD RATINGS: - Quesabirria tacos (5/5): Perfectly crispy, large, full-sized tacos generously stuffed with meat and cheese. Add your onion, cilantro, lime, and salsa and you're good to go. Perfection!!! The sweet tea and cucumber lemonade was also delicious and refreshing!

The gentleman at the counter when we came in, I believe he's the owner, but he knew his menu!!! Such good food. I've never had tacos like these. My family is visiting from Europe. Well, my daughter's partner has been learning to cook Mexican cuisine. Since my grandparents are from Mexico he want to learn more about my daughter's family & heritage. It's sweet. Well, he's been making Birria tacos & the soup for about two years now. But, he wanted to try some authentic ones while here. He was very very happy with his tacos, no cheese. My daughter got hers with cheese & I got soft tortilla birria tacos. The soup was different9 than I've had in the past. The flavor was amazing. Not spicy, but very flavourful. It took almost the entire meal for it to cool to a decent temperature. That didn't stop me from enjoying every spoonful, & dip of my taco. I tried one of my daughters with cheese & loved it. Sadly, I didn't get the goat, I got beef. So, to my daughter & I, they were very much like barbacoa, & we enjoyed them. I'll go back & try the goat another time. Worth a try if your looking for some yummy Birria tacos.

Happy to add to the excellent Yelp ratings! GF and I are down in San Antonio for a work trip. Babysitting a laptop on location; we stayed nearby for the weekend to make sure all functions work remotely. Work done; time to explore! We skipped breakfast except for a coffee so we were really hungry come lunchtime. We shopped a bit and I started thinking what I could try south of my neck of the woods Texas. Tried alot down here but wanted something new. Thought process lead me to birria tacos; basically what I can explain in engrish terms the Mexico "French Dip". Basically tacos or quesadillas dipped in beef broth; the newest hotness around these parts from the state of Jalisco. Digs are cozy in an old Subway sort of way. Order at the counter process was simple. Perhaps not enough drink options for some; found solace in a pure cane sugar Mexico Coke. Still like but don't indulge in the Jarritos flavored sodas too much. Condiments came out first; carefully wrapped cilantro, white onion, and lime wedges in a pottery Talavera style server. OMG, the portions! I thoroughly enjoyed my cheesy juicy pot roast style beef similar to a Tex-Mex half quesadilla. GF's plate was more hard taco with the same ingredients sans cheese. Hot sauce provided (red/green) was pure Mexico bliss. For those that aren't familiar; there's no "salsa" in Mexico. Only pureed spicy peppers; a real forehead wiping treat!

The Queso Birria with broth was amazing! They give you fresh cilantro, chopped onions and limes to dress your birria taco as well as two nice spicy salsas. Definitely recommend! Huge taco for only $5.32. I couldn't finish it.

Round 2! We had to come back. This time we brought our daughter. My daughter and I ordered the Combo #1. The crunch with every bite of these tacos make stretchy pants so worth it. And let's not forget the perfect amount of cheese... My hubby ordered Combo #8. These are the perfect size mini tacos. The asada meat was seasoned just right. This place is a MUST try if you haven't been here.

Disappointed in this establishment and how they handle their mistakes. I would come to Birrieria Jalisco specifically for their queso birrias. After today, I don't think I would come back. This time we ordered a "queso birra pizza" ($30) initially we recognized the amount of cheese it had to compensate for the little meat was in it. After bringing the concern to our server, we felt confident about speaking out hoping for a solution of either remaking the order, or a refund but neither happened. Instead their course of action was to give us more birria however our point was that we did not want to eat it. When we asked for another solution- our server said we could order something else BUT we would still need to pay for not only the Birra Pizza (not refunded although we left it on the table) but also a whole different order of Mini tacos $12. My take as a former server when these sorts of instances happen is to take full responsibility and tailor to a reasonable solution because sometimes it takes a business to lose a little money to make more money. It's very noticeable the kind of business ethics they have. Listen Carefully: The more satisfied customers are, the more likely they are to spend more, return more often, share positive reviews, and recommend your restaurant to others.

Delish! A bit pricey for a taco joint but the tacos are MASSIVE. Honestly, I could barely finish one. We each purchased the combo #1. I'm not exactly sure why it's called a combo because it's just tacos and some broth? I was hoping for some rice and beans but I guess this isn't that kind of place. It didn't include the drink either. The drinks are very cheap though. Since this was our first time here as well as our first time ordering birria tacos, I had to ask if there was goat/beef mix or just one or the other. I really wasn't sure. I was told that the combos are only beef. I will definitely be back for more but I'll only be ordering one taco as three to an order would feed a small family. As far as covid-19 precautions go- every other table is marked with an X so there is plenty of space between parties. From what I saw when I was there, all employees were wearing masks. The staff is very friendly so don't be afraid to ask questions. The place does get packed though so prepare for a wait.

The food was amazing. The service was great! Everyone was so helpful and happy we were there. I ordered a large to-go order. They brought us out chips and salsa while we waited and the food came out super quick. We got it home and everyone loved it!

Cafe de olla and quesabirria. My favorite!
    Anna B.

Oh my goodness. Where to start? Birria that was tasty and not overly greasy! So awesome. I had a torta, it was delicious, but the star was the hard shell quesabirria with the consomé to dip it in (kinda like an au jus). When you order, be patient, everything comes out super hot and fresh. We did get some pork tamales to take home and those are also amazing, I love the fact that the masa had flavor. If you go and they have café de olla, try it. It was even served in an authentic mug, loved it!

The service is a little slow. I had the Tuesday special and was enough food for 3 meals for me. It was fresh and yummy. Definitely indulgent as it was fried. Clean and very cute place. Oh and the cucumber lemonade was absolutely amazing! Staff was super friendly and awesome!!

(It had Just Egg but I think other things added with it. It felt that it was softer and lighter than if it was only Just Egg) and pico de gallo on handmade flour tortilla. We were surprised by how much we enjoyed it. Their two self-serve complementary salsas were also fun and creamy. Concha- Delicious and we liked the top of it. Maybe one of our favorite conchas. Elote hot cake - Came out really hot and was delicious. These are only available on weekends. I was tempted to get more but we had lots more food targets on the schedule. Torta with Asada was pretty good too. But the other items excited me more I think. The person at the front also gave us some samples of other taco fillings to try: the fillings of the La Ranchera: Potatoes and pico de gallo in salsa ranchera and also grilled nopales. My husband who is usually not as crazy as me about nopales liked them here. They have mole on the weekends but it's not housemade from scratch. They use premade mole and add some more things to it so we skipped that one. My general rating system: 1 star: I would stay away 2 stars: Has some good things about it but I generally don't recommend. 3 stars: Pretty good. I wouldn't go out of my way to go back but a decent place 4 stars: Great place. I would go back. 5 stars: I highly recommend stopping whatever you are doing and making plans to try it out! I'm taken aback every time I walk into to this wonderfully positioned taqueria in downtown steps from the River Walk. The smells, the feels, the sounds- it'll set your senses on fire. It's ambience is nothing short of walking the streets of Mexico and stumbling across the best local food find there is- it's your lucky day. It doesn't end there, because I have yet to discuss the flavors that this place dishes out. If you can imagine that other taquerias in town as as good as mamma's cooking, Plantaqueria is grandma's cooking saying, " I taught them everything they know." The counter service, decor and neon lights transport you to a pueblo that you probably have no business being in but were fortunate enough to get lost in. I feel that the people working to advance this visionary concept are in love with what they do because you get that experience with every bite of fresh, homemade goodness, weather you dine in or take/order out. Dude, fresh corn and flour tortillas, C'mon, man!! And speaking of vision, the owner, Sofia, who looks like she would get IDd at a bar has created something truly unique and incredibly delicious. Plantaqueria has revolutionized modern, classical Mexican street cuisine. It's open 7am-7pm so you can literally have this all day and you might wish you did. Y'all need to get you some, and don't thank me, thank the purveyors of this Alamo City gem. P.s. I've brought my mom in to eat this stuff and she totally agrees!

The smell alone made me think we were in for something special. We grabbed a couple of cocktails and ordered tacos, which seemed like the obvious choice. The tacos were good, but that's about where I'd leave it. They weren't bad at all, but they also weren't particularly memorable. With the aroma coming from the grill and all the recommendations I'd heard, I was expecting a little more flavor and a bigger wow factor. The atmosphere was fun, the service was good, and the charcoal grill definitely adds to the experience. I just found the food itself to be more "solid" than "spectacular." I'd rate it about a 7 out of 10. Worth trying if you're already at El Camino, but not a place I'd go out of my way for.

Pulled up on a Friday late night with my family ordered the standard 5 tacos. They are a bit pricey as well. I ordered the carne Asada and my mother in law ordered the chicken. While it did seem like it tasted good it was super greasy. (TMI coming up) When I woke up the next morning my I noticed my bowels were literally moving the next day, (I counted about 9 times). I felt bloated and everything. My wife even told me that as we were pulling off she witnessed the cook I believe his name is Julio eating some of the product while he was preparing peoples food (the side door of the food truck was open so you could see right in). Funny enough we decided to go back Saturday evening to give them another try, thinking it would be better, BOY was we wrong. I ordered the same order plus charro Beans, elote (corn in a cup) and 3 cans of sprite. This time we took literally one bite and the meat was DRYER than the Saharan desert both the carne asada and the chicken. (Tasted like some reheated old meat or meat that had been made days prior). We were already at the hotel at this point and was infuriated!!! We ended up calling and I believe I spoke to Julio (or whoever the cook is) over the phone. After lying saying that he cooked the meat fresh that day he stuttered I told him aint no way the meat was fresh. He then said and I quote " I cooked the meat "a couple days ago" then said "sorry I burnt it or overcooked it". (Knowing that why would you serve that to me?) I then stated "yes it tasted old period". I requested a refund in which he agreed to. Driving all the way back I brought the food back as well. Julio (or whoever the cooks name is) tried to plead his case to me saying that the meat is fresh and took a fork and tasted the food himself and then tried to offer me the food. I told him "no I don't want to taste it, just refund me please" in which he did. Dishonesty, Not handling food with care, lying. Is something that crosses the line and I won't be back. *Also if the owner is reading this I have the phone conversation recorded and the video evidence to show proof this whole interaction, so do not just glaze over this review* I don't like writing bad reviews, but this one is for sure warranted. Seems like they will dress up the taco and selling you some "old meat" people just be careful and mindful when coming to this taco truck. "The Earths Best Taco" they say... that's a stretch!
