Never again! Does this look like adobong "pusit"? I know i went there late in the day and all the trays are empty. The lady went in the kitchen then gave me 3 choices, vegetables, fried tilapia, and squid "pusit". So I settled for squid. Got home, opened a tightly wrapped container and found this? It's so salty, dry and had 3 pieces of squid obviously was what's left in the pot! They changed me $10 for this! Called this morning, spoke with Mike, he was defending that that's what happens when a dish is re-heated, it gets dry! Asked if I still have it and to come to get a refund! After hanging up, I realized why should I drive 9 miles to get my $10. No customer manners!!! Didn't even say sorry! This place is incredible! I had some time to kill while in the area so i decided to check out the local Pinoy cuisine. The main reason I stopped here was for the baked goods, obviously to try new things. Pandesal has been on my list for a while, so that was exciting to pick up. The Puto made me laugh, so of course I grabbed it. The chicken skin I hadn't seen like that before, but I like chicharon so I figured it would be worth a try. The bibinka galapong kind of reminds me of salvadoran cheesecake (but with coconut strands and less dense). The Kutsinta is chewy, sweet and very fun to eat. I've also always wanted to try Halo-halo so that I could see what all the fuss is about, and it is AMAZING. So many different things inside made it like different dessert in every bite! Taro, adzuki, agar, chickpea, white bean, mango, macapuko, etc etc! I chose the Buko pandan for the icecream on top (a favorite of mine). Totally recommend you try it if you get the chance! I wasn't planning on grabbing any lunch, but I just couldn't pass up the opportunity to investigate new foods. So, I grabbed a bit of Bopis and Dinguan. I've yet to try the Bopis, but the person behind the counter offered me a sample of the Dinguan, and I fell in love with it. I learned that it's a pork blood stew made with pig offal, and I'm just thrilled about it. It's super savory and delicious! (I read Bopis is a spicy dish of pig heart and lungs, which I am looking forward to trying for lunch.) Bottom line, this place is absolutely worth checking out. Trining's Bakery is my somewhat go-to place when I'm craving some Filipino food. They are located in the 88 Ranch Asian Market and have a good selection of turo-turo (point-point) items. I usually get the 2-item combo which comes with 3 scoops of white rice although you can get a portion of the pancit noodles as well but I usually get rice. The entrees they serve are usually the typical such as kare kare (peanut butter stew with beef and vegetables), Chicken and Pork Adobo, Menudo (pork and liver stewed in tomato sauce), Kaldereta (beef stew with potatoes and carrots in tomato sauce), Sinigang na Baboy (sour soup broth with pork and vegetables), Diniguan (blood meat) and a few other things. If what you are wanting is not readily prepared, you could also special order from the menu. You can also fulfill your breakfast cravings here which is served all day and traditionally comes with garlic fried rice, two sunnyside up eggs and either the longanisa, tocino, daing na bangus (fried milk fish), and other traditional breakfast meats. Flavor-wise, I can't complain about anything as everything I've ordered has been very good. They also sell desserts such as Leche Flan and other specialty cakes. I love Filipino cakes as they are usually made with a butter cream frosting which is my favorite. There's also siopao (steamed buns with meat), baked buns, ice cream, specialty Filipino drinks like Sago at Gulaman and Melon. I frequent this place specially when I'm out grocery shopping for Filipino stuffs. I like coming here early in the morning, have my brunch for the day and some snacks to take home to munch on later in the day. The staffs are pretty friendly, so nice to hear Tagalog spoken so I can practice speaking it more. I love trying everything they have available. Adobo pusit is one of my favorites with pancit and many more. Taho in those cups when fresh and still warm are great! Also the arroz caldo are nice to have in a cooler rainy day. My sister and I frequent this place with my nephew who loves trying all the sweet treats they have. I recommend not coming late as they either are out or you get left overs. read more

I have to admit, Filipino food is not pretty. Therefore, most of the time Filipino restaurants are not fancy. But one of the things I have always complained about, is that Filipino food is not hot enough for me. I want it fresh out of the skillet. And that is hard to manage when it's coming out of her chafing tray. Or some sort of keep it warm buffet. This place is not that. Their food is hot and fresh and arrives at the proper temperature for consumption. I would have given this place five stars but, like previously noted, ambience is not common in Filipino restaurants. I ordered the one item combo the with the lechon Kawali and the tortang talong. That is considered a one plus one special. Super cheap. And I ordered the bucket of chicken skins. Chicken skins were a tiny bit overdone, but better than under done. It could have been also that I was already full when I tried it and nothing was going to please my belly better than what I had already eaten. The tortang talong was delicious, you have a choice of with meat or not. I chose not to include meat. And It was delicious. I probably need to go back a few more times to be sure of what to recommend to you. But I was super happy with my choices. Primary reasons for my 4 star rating is HOT food, quick and friendly service, huge portions and great variety. I didn't buy any baked goods but I can vouch for their large selection. Next time! The first time I came here, I got their lumpia and turon because they're my favorite Philippine snacks. I was not disappointed at all! Both items were flaky and really tasty, the only downside was there wasn't a lot of dessert in stock even though it was only 1pm. The service isn't bad at all, some people expect employees to be super kind but that doesn't really matter to me personally. I just order my food, it's simple as that. Food here is good. I always get the 1-item combo for lunch and it's usually enough to satisfy. Halo-halo is good, you get a choice of ice cream with it. However, DO NOT get the Sago Gulaman. I NEVER learn my lesson!! It's waaaay too sweet and the sago is never fresh. The garlic peanuts are good too!! Don't forget the pan de sal!!! I highly recommend the beef dish. It's different everyday so i always call to see what they'll be serving. The beef mechado is my ultimate favorite. Also, my co workers told me that their homemade bagoong (shrimp paste) is da bomb dot com!! I personally don't eat seafood but i hear it's the best bagoong in town. Overall rating is 3.5. TBC is located inside 88 Ranch Marketplace on Ynez. Good for a quick stop after getting groceries at the market place. The place is not too big and lighting is a little dim. This place is another venue that presents its dishes in "turo-turo" style or point and order type of thing. I recommend ordering the kare-kare, which is beef curry in peanut butter sauce. We also like their tortang talong (egg plant in fried scrambled eggs) which either comes with or without the ground beef. There's also the menu posted on the wall for a special order to go. Our favorite is their scrumptious calamari. They are tender and juicy inside and crunchy on the outside. This place also offers novelty desserts and traditional Filipino style cakes. At first, I thought she was the owner, cause she definitely acted like one. But then again, even if she happens to be the owner, she should treat customers like every customer deserves to be treated. She does not listen and responds to everything I had to say, and she had to have her tone higher than mine... although I was trying to be calm in the first place, cos it was my birthday! Lol... I went to the cashier and waited as she was still doing another transaction. She left afterwards without saying anything even though she's seen me. Sitting at my apartment typing up this review as I enjoy my yummy food from Trining's Bakery and Cafe. *type, type, type* *nom, nom, nom* (& repeat) CHICKEN EMPANADAS (2pcs, $1.85/pc) - Good crust-to-filling ratio. Not too thick or thin of a crust. Filling was delicious and more moist than empanadas I've had before. Filling includes chicken, peas, carrots, and raisins. Sounds strange with the raisins, but tastes great if you eat everything as a whole and don't pick out the filling. Raisins blended in well with the flavor of the filling and was not too sweet. They also have a beef option available. PUTO UBE (4 pcs/pkg, $2.50/pkg) - This was recommended to me by the cashier, since I wasn't sure if the ube or the pandan one tasted best. They did have a plain/original one too, but I was more interested in getting something with flavor. Cakes were soft and moist. Ube flavor was just right and not too overpowering. Cake was not too sweet/sugary, which is a plus. LECHE FLAN ($5.75) - Yum! Good portion for price (considering other places will charge you about the same amount for just a small slice of flan). Texture of the flan was creamy and smooth. Flavor was nice and light. Just enough sweetness without being too sweet. There are also other baked goods (ie. ube bread, pan de sal, chicken sio pao, cassava cake, etc) and food at the shop, but I didn't buy any of those. SERVICE - Excellent service and friendly, polite staff. Very knowledgeable about the food and will give you suggestions if you ask. For those of you who are plastics (no, not like in "Mean Girls"...I'm talking about credit-card-heavy users) like me, there is a $0.50 charge if your total is under $10. This post is on behalf of my husband, who goes to Ranch 88 weekly on Sundays. He goes here for fresh baked pandesal. Each time he has gone into Trining's upon opening, the lady who works the front treats him indifferently and attempts to give him older pandesal. As much as I'm trying to be politically correct; I feel he is treated different because he does not appear to be Filipino. As other times, customers that walk in and order the same thing are given fresh out of the oven pandesal. Is this a big deal? Probably not. I love the fact that not only do they serve cooked food, they also offer a selection of desserts and baked goods. The space is kind of small inside seating wise, but what do you expect from a small shop located inside the 88 Ranch Market? Overall proces are decent. Ranging anywhere from $7-$9 for a one or two item combination, I feel that there is value in what you get. I still haven't explored the majority of their offerings, but I will over due time. Food here is okay, it's you're typical point point joint. When I go here, either I get their kutsinta (steamed rice cake) and ukoy (shrimp fritter). I rarely get anything else from here. I've had their halo-halo, and it was okay. The line they have set up can get very confusing. You stand in line, then you've got people looking at the hot food tray, the people that work there, they end up helping them first, instead of the people that are in line. I think they need to set up a better systems for that. It's hit or miss with their customer service, sometimes you get a friendly one, there's times where you don't get any hello or a smile.
