Listen to me...carefully. I'm a 53 y/o Cuban man. I'm genetically predisposed to know what I'm talking about here...I've eaten Cuban sandwiches from Key West to Kennebunkport. SCORES of them. I judge all Cuban restaurants by a simple metric, the Cuban Sandwich. Today, my wife and I tried the Tropical Bakery after she saw an article about it in the Palm Beach Post. This Cuban sandwich is, in one word, PERFECTION. I was at once blissful yet saddened at the same time. Saddened with the knowledge that I had finally found the absolute pinnacle of how the good Lord himself intended the Cuban Sandwich to taste. The search has come to an end. The Cuban Sandwich simply cannot be better made. The only thing not made in house is the Swiss cheese and the damn pickle, and I'm not 100% sure that they didn't make those either. The ratio of ham to pork to cheese to bread is the sort of precision for which NASA engineers strive. You'll excuse my hyperbole but, this sandwich is transcendent. If you are within 200 miles of this unassuming little place in a corner of a little plaza that is just sketchy enough to be packing the pistol that you won't need here, just go. Shut up and give them your money (cash only) and you can thank me later. That is all. read more

I got the Cuban sandwich it was delicious pressed nice and hot, medium coffee and Cuban coffee. Ham croquettes with a potato filled ball. The inside is definitely your local family, friendly type of vibe the women all beautiful and very helpful I might possibly find a wife here. Food came out quick it's nice and clean a nice flow of people that's how I knew the food was good. Definitely 5 star Latin bakery. My Cuban sandwich was perfect. This bakery and restaurant has been in business since 1989. We had the pork and chicken platters. Plenty of parking. There is not a long wait for food. The waitress was a doll. She only speaks Spanish. We had the chicken empanada. It was good. Not dry like many places make it. Papa rellena was tasty. Filling had a lot of meat Chicken plancha was cooked perfectly and the pork was seasoned nicely. My husband had the rum cake. He did not enjoy. It was too sweet. They are an average breakfast and lunch spot. Their breakfast platters are way overpriced, and they come out like a $3-5 dish. It's definitely not worth the over $10 they charge. Coffee is decent and croquettes are good. Besides that, there is other spots in the area where your dollar would go further. We discovered this place when we had lunch next door and saw they were busy so we decided to try at a later time. I did however purchase some Cuban Pastelitos to take home that day. We decided to return for lunch a few weeks later and were fortunate to find a table that just opened up. Our server quickly approached and gave us menus and took our beverage orders. They have traditional hot meals as well as traditional sandwich offerings. This visit I chose the Cuban sandwich while my wife went with one of her favorite Media Noche sandwiches. The sandwiches arrived in a reasonable amount of time and were quite large. My Cuban was packed with meats and tasted just as good as those I have enjoyed in my hometown of Hialeah! It is interesting to note that this Tropical Bakery & Restaurant has been here for over 30 years and has been recognized as one of West Palm's authentic Cuban Cafes. I would venture to say that the takeout and pastry traffic is just as busy as the dine in (they do have a small stool counter) business. This a "Cash Only" establishment, but believe me, it is worth every penny for what you get and enjoy! ... and YES, I did order three pastelitos to take home, one of which was attacked in the car by my wife ... :-) read more

I always love coming here when I'm in town but yesterday really stood out to me. I thought they closed at 10pm but upon arrival realized they closed in 20 minutes. I hate being that person but I drove 30 minutes and was dying for their food! When we walked in the staff didn't even seem phased even though they were starting to pack up. They told us to sit down and take our time and it was just such great customer service!! I've stopped by this little bakery and cafe many times over the years to try a little something here and there. I've eaten several pastries with cream, caramel and powdered sugar that must be eaten over a plate due to their bite and crispiness; if you're on a first date here, stay safe with a flan or eclair, both delicious! I have often picked up treats for my South American in-laws, who don't like overly sweet items but really enjoy the pastries from here. We recently ordered a birthday cake from Tropical, and it was so delicious! A guava jam/jelly filling and a traditional cream filling complimented moist vanilla cake that was almost juicy (even a few days later); smothered in soft, light creamy icing, the entire bite was a sensation of textures and flavors. read more

If you're from Palm beach and haven't gone here, then you're missing out. I remember coming here as a lil girl. It would be our first stop every Sunday before church. My dad would order a Cuban bread, guava pastry, and a sugar cane juice made fresh right in front of you. The place has been remodeled since those days, but walking in takes me back every time. The staff is usually friendly. I prefer to grab a table and have a server come rather than sit at the bar. There's one older lady who isn't the friendliest. In any event at the table service is always great. Chill spot to go too early Saturday or Sunday morning. Beware Sunday's they close at 1. The guava pastry is by far my favorite and I NEVER leave there without ordering 2 to go. The crust is soft and STUFFED with guava, so much so it oozes out the side, pure bliss! The tostada with croquets are a must! The bread is nice and buttery and fresh toasted with croquets in between. The sugar cane juice is just flipping awesome. Every sip takes me back to my childhood. Dinner is great too. Super cheap and plenty of food, enough leftovers for lunch. The rice, beans and bistec and pollo empanizado is the bomb! Made by authentic Cubans and made fresh. The rice is always fluffy and seasoned to perfection. The place is small but perfect. They truly believe in the saying if it ain't broke why fix it? Love coming here early munch on the pasties and just listen to the crowd and the latest chisme (gossip) it's like stepping in Havana. My only complaint would be 2 things, they don't accept card and there aren't more locations. We drive from Boynton that's the nearest Cuban bakery by us. Decided to give this place a try seeing as we have driven past before. My husband had the Cuban sandwich & I the meat empanadas. We also had a Cuban coffee with leche (milk). This is one of the best coffees I have EVER HAD!!! Btw I'm a huge coffee drinker. As for the Cuban... Super fresh, quality meat, available hot sauce (Texas Pete) nice touch. Absolute worst customer service! Went in to buy some pastries and coffee- large coffee marked as 29.99 - while waiting for coffee, given check which has it marked as 34.99...initially told the difference was tax, tax is also added on bill and not sure how 7 percent sales tax makes a 29.99 item now 5 dollars more. They are pretty busy in the morning with a lot of customers to eat breakfast. Could not be more disappointed, they only accept cash and if you don't to have any the have an atm for THEIR convenience. They offer no milk substitutions, whole milk that is it. No almond, oat, coconut milk, etc. My recommendation is to accept more forms of payment and to be more progressive and offer other milk options. Tropical bakery is awesome!! They have such a wide variety of Cuban food that you can order and not to mention it tastes delicious! The croquettes and empanadas were my favorite. Everything tasted fresh and prices were extremely reasonable. You truly get what you pay for. They were out of chicken empanadas when we came but we only had a to wait 5 minutes for fresh ones to come out - shows that they continue to bake fresh things and keep the shelves stocked! An awesome family run restaurant- friendly service, awesome Cuban food. We were there at about 4.30pm for an early dinner. There is a takeout section and a sit down area plus a bakery. If you chose to eat in, just sit down & someone will give you the menu. They have daily special for the day, do check it out, it is by the corner of the takeout section or check the menu. We do not understand Spanish... no problem, they speak English well & will gladly translate for you. I had the Cuban steak with rice, beans & sweet plantains & my husband had the special of the day, pork, rice, beans & sweet plantains. In addition we ordered sugar cane juice & cafe con leche- Cuban coffee with milk. The steak was very tasty served with carmelized onions & lime (do not need the lime), the beans was in a thicken gravy that you can pour over the rice- so tasty! The pork was like a stew- the flavour was so good, you know it is stewed for awhile as the meats falls off the bones! Highly recommend you try the sugar cane juice & the cafe con leche. The staff is rude, stuck up and overall not very friendly at all. I have gone there three times before this review over the last 3 years. The establishment is clean, parking is not too challenging.
