I used to always go to the Lake Lansing Rd location until they started using so much bleach that your nose burns walking in the place, but without that, I wouldn't have found this location. Definitely go here for a smoothie, my smoothie was great! But then I ordered the turkey bacon ciabatta sandwich with no Swiss. They put shredded lettuce on the sandwich and it was suppose to be a "spinach blend" and there was a piece of shredded cheddar randomly in the sandwich? The employees are really generous and accommodating and always go out of their way to make conversation and ask how my day is going. Great place to grab some quick, healthy food. One of my biggest gripes about living in Michigan in the somewhat dreary Lansing area was the complete lack (as in zero) of smoothie shops. I'm a smoothie nut - in all the previous places I've lived, smoothie houses were always my go to for breakfast, and sometimes for a liquid lunch. It's my way of getting the servings of fruit without much effort that I otherwise avoid. They give me a little pep to my step and are just downright tastetacular. TSC arrived near MSU sometime last year but I hadn't had a reason to try them until my office relocated dangerously close. It's part of a still small chain that also serves breakfast and lunch food items that tend to have a tropical theme. This location isn't much to look at; its very plain inside and out, but kept clean which I value more. I've tried multiple smoothies so far, gearing toward the low-cal options the most. Each has been very flavorful, perfectly thick, and leaves me feeling good about myself. My personal favorite is the Acai Berry Blast. My only real complaint is that there aren't size options - all smoothies are the same size (VERY large - too large for me) and the same price. I'd like to see a small, medium, or large option. It would help my wallet and my waistline. As for customer service, the guy who runs the counter during the weekday mornings knew my name after my first visit and has used it ever since. Such a small gesture really goes a long way, and being treated like a friendly face will always keep me coming back! read more

My smoothie was just okay--too much ice & not enough flavor for the higher price. But once again, employees DO NOT know how to wear a mask correctly. They HAVE TO GO over the nose. Well most of the time it is great, but tonight the misses and I stoped to grab some food and smoothies for way home. We walked in and ordered at 5:30 and we were the only costumers in the store. We ordered 3 smoothies and 2 sandwiches. We had our smoothies in 5 minutes but no food was even started to be made? There were 6 yes 6 employees working and 1 of them made our smoothies while the other 5 played on phone and manager mopped the floor... then after us sitting there for 15/20 minutes he thought it might be a good idea to make our food. 20 + minutes later after walking in we received our food. We tried to talk to manager about why it took so long but he 1st said it only took 8 minutes then he said 11... he got argumentative to we just left. read more

this trop is the worst in east lansing by far. terrible service for months now, yet i keep giving them the benefit of the doubt. I have waited over 45 minutes before for 2 smoothies because the workers don't know how to make a smoothie. Seems like there's new hires every couple of weeks who are clueless in any hygiene (no gloves) and confused about how to make a generic smoothie while the customer is standing right there. The smoothies are recently 96% ice and extremely chunky, close to being undrinkable. I paid 23 dollars to doordash food and a smoothie (not wanting to deal with their terrible service one day) and my smoothie was almost clear chunky water because of the amount of ice. Pretty much everyone in this location knows to stay away from this cafe which sucks because Trop is a normally really good place to go and get a smoothie. read more

The drink I highly recommend is the "Detox Island Green". Man... I feel like a soft-serve machine the next morning if you catch my drift. The service here is average and the accuracy of the order is great. However, at times the amount I get from my smoothie seems less than what I receive at other Tropical locations. The main reason I am giving this location a 3/5 stars though is the facility. The tables were sticky and gross to eat on. The location is pretty small and has limited parking which can be difficult. Lastly, the trash always seems to be full so it can difficult to show things away and can be unsightly. Terrible. If you like smoothies that are 3/4's ice, a place where the food is absolutely sub par, and on top of that getting your order completely mixed up then you're at the right place. I'm okay with paying $5 + dollars for a smoothie, but seriously come on, make it right. I ordered a buffalo chicken salad and they gave me some nasty chicken caesar wrap absolutely drenched in sauce to the point the wrap was soggy, wrong smoothie, and wrong chips. Find another place to spend your money on a meal. This location in particular is awful. read more

Gone to this place twice now for a bite to eat with the family and both times the kitchen was closed at least 2.5 hours before closing time. A bit premature one would think I can understand the last 15-30 min but over two and hours. Come on now that's a little ridiculous. Meh. I've experienced better. Exactly. This new location of an expanding franchise chain is just that - another gimmicky, so-so addition to a long line of sub-par dining options in EL. Note that I could not even add their phone number above as it is crossed off on the menu I was given (more particularly, note that someone took the time to cross it off, but not actually the write the correct one). There was similar confusion in finding their hours (and menu, as seen below) but I hope those are just opening jitters. First, it is a smoothie cafe kinda joint. Which reads... "we got lots of smoothie options with some food to go with it." The smoothie variety is extensive; there are many combinations with the expected cutesy names and it looks like you can create just about anything you could want with the different fruits and supplements. While mine tasted of real fruit, it was difficult to watch the blending process and see if mixes/binders were used as well. It definitely was ice-heavy and rather thick, especially if only fruit-based. Given their difficulty with other questions, I decided not to press my luck. Interestingly, the corporate website for the chain also does not list ingredients. I did learn, however, that my "low-fat" (of course) smoothie has about 500 calories and 128 carbs (113 sugar). They are all 24oz. and start at $4.59. One plus is that a smoothie is just $3 if purchased with a food item. One con is that the food items may not be worth it. Specifically, I ordered one of the recommended chicken flatbreads for $3.99. College students take note: they are small. In fact, the last inch of my flatbread was without any filling. I focus here on the main components instead of the actual flatbread as I feel they are the foundation of the menu. That is, while the flavors were okay, the chicken is nothing special. Seemed to be over-processed, probably frozen and pre-cooked chicken (which also explains the sodium content), that requires extensive flavoring. The bread itself was soft, surprisingly not crunchy for being a grilled flatbread and was also just okay. Each ingredient seemed to be acceptable and best - and unfortunately none were combined in a way to make the "sum" any better than its parts. Did the $3 smoothie option make up for it (saving $1.49 with the sandwich)? No. And I am equally unlikely to spend $5 on a fair, but not exceptional smoothie. The service was friendly and mostly helpful. The small seating area appeared clean and well-kept (as it should be new...), but there was a fair amount of trash alongside the back part of the building. I liked the pleasant atmosphere and smiling faces, but these only go so far in the overall experience. For example, with no line, it still seemed to take a fair amount of time for my order. Additionally, coordination is needed: the smoothie maker didn't know I was still waiting for a sandwich. Nor could anyone tell me how much the breakfast wraps were. The menu states $1.99-$3.99 and I asked if that reflected different sizes. No one knew without ringing one up, and no one wanted to find out for me. In short, I was not impressed. While smoothies might be a big hit for summer, the value for this college town is probably lacking. Perhaps I will try again once they settle in - and perhaps offer some coupons - but I'm certainly not in any hurry to return. read more

The service is terrible. Witnessed the workers talking poorly about each other in front of customers. Also, witnessed them talk poorly about the customer in front of me who was upset that his online order was taking much longer than they told him. He left without getting his smoothies and they laughed and said "oh, well it's not my problem... he was rude anyways" when they should have ran after him. This location had terrible customer service and was very disorganized. I walked into a cluster of folks waiting on delayed orders, a computer that kept freezing- preventing staff from taking orders- and an ingredients cooler that was out of many items- requiring staff to refill items before making smoothies. Many orders were made incorrectly and staff working did not seem bothered and continued to move slowly without acknowledging waiting customers. I don't plan to visit this location again. read more

I've NEVER had a bad experience here. Everyone working is always kind. Smoothies and food is a bit overpriced, but I've never disliked anything I've ordered. Smoothies are well made and always taste fabulous. If anything I'd say add a bit less sugar to the smoothies. They can be very sweet. read more

My first time here it took foorrrreeevvveeerrr to get my smoothie. And the line just kept getting longer behind me. And they were serving people that got there after me....I thought they had forgotten my order because I was seriously waiting for almost 20 minutes for a strawberry smoothie. Didn't think it would take that long with 4 people behind the counter. And when I finally got the smoothie, it was really sugar filled and not what I expected....won't be returning. I come to this location at least once a week because it is the only good smoothie place near me and I put up with the 15-minute wait or forgetting to make my order EVERY TIME. Is it really so hard to make a smoothie in a timely manner? SO I was going to Starbucks and then going to get food from tropical so I figured it would be fine to park there. NOPE. The manager is a completely rude and a prick. He called the police on me, gave me a 45$ ticket, and called a tow truck... all in the time it took for someone to make me coffee. Not to mention the parking lot had two cars in it so the other customers still had a place to park. I am never going back here again. Smoothies are subpar anyway. I'd rather drive 20 minutes instead of giving them business ever again. If I could give negative stars it would be for this tropical location and its staff/management. I hope this review ruins your day just as meeting your unprofessional manager did to mine.
