Holy shit this place fell off. I bought a loco moco and two bites and no can. This food is horrible, smelt weird from jump, but tastes horrible. Somehow even the rice is weird. You can tell the owners just don't care. This spot makes l & l look gourmet. I grew up in Makaha so I know hunger and we never waste food but this one no can. Maybe the shittiest food I've ever had. For those that don't know Loco Moco is two scoops rice, hamburger patty, gravy with fried egg on top, side Mac salad on side. This is an incredibly simple dish. To screw this up takes an incredible amount of indifference. I've seen this before where owners just don't care. Sell your spot cause your on borrowed time. Comparing this to L&L so it's gonna be a high bar. We were a fam of 5 late Saturday night so things were quiet but the service was still very nice. From assorted dishes: meats were nicely seasoned, just wish the short ribs had a little more char on them. Still very tasty, tho. We stumbled across this gem on Yelp while attending a sporting event held at Intermountain Veterans' Memorial Park just across the highway. You will find Hawaiian staples in the corner of a commercial strip that will take you beachside. They are cooking up all my favorites and doing it rather well. The staff was friendly, and the food was cooked to order, so plan to wait just a few minutes. We took our treasure and ran to the sports park, where we ate on the tailgate. I met the owners when they first opened up. Food is super and they are passionate about what they do. I was pumped up. We would come in at least once a week till we ran into someone who might be a new employee or a family member, but we were treated curtly. We were driving through Grand Junction with a hankering for Hawaiian food and found Tropix on yelp. A bit out of the way, but we can't get Hawaiian food back home, so a little detour is worth it. We dined in, as we didn't really want to eat in the car. But I do believe that this is mainly a takeout place. The lady taking our order was pleasant. She also served our food and checked back on us as well. We ordered the Katsu Chicken and the Kalua Pig. One with a side of fried rice instead of white. We also ordered a side of short ribs , because we're fatties. The Chicken was good. I think you really can't mess up Katsu. It wasn't greasy and it tasted good. The Kalua pig was just meh. Although the sesame balls were tasty, and the spam musubi was interesting, the other items missed. The musubi, by the way, was mostly rice and only a thin slice of spam, and the rice inside was dry. The egg drop soup was oddly bland - we ate only a couple of spoonfuls and left almost a full bowl behind. We ordered the salt and pepper duck and it was overcooked - tasted like someone put it in a deep fryer and forgot about it. It was served with rice that was dry - tasted like it was cooked hours ago and left sitting. The worst part of our experience was the smell of the restaurant. It had a strong and pervasive smell of chlorine. While I appreciate a clean restaurant, I don't want to smell cleaner while eating. This is how much of $19.35 worth of food I am leaving on the table. Their "smoothie" is nothing but icemilk something with some flavor syrup, but absolutely no fruit at all. It's a watery, chalky-tasting icee, basically. I had the beef see loo I think. Bas9cally drunken noodle with beef. The beef tasted way more aged than it should and the whole dish was basically tasteless other than the slightly off beef. When I said "mild" I didn't mean completely bland with no flavor. So good(had to order another one to go) I think the meet selection is better than L&L the short rib is very soft and juicy! The bbq beef is not dry at all super good. Awesome and worth the drive from the highway of passing through grand junction!!!!!!!!

We decided to stop here so we had some food to take on Amtrak since they only have small concessions. My family and I being Hawaiian were excited to get some local food but were a bit disappointed when we saw that their spam musubi didn't have as much rice as it usually does. I got the loco moco and the burger meat itself was very tough to chew. My grandmother loved her sesame balls. While I don't totally remember what they ordered they felt very neutral about it all. My family and I litetally just left the Tropix Hawaiian BBQ parking lot less than 5 minutes ago. After being on the road for 8+ hours, I was Yelping (is that a word?) around for a place to eat a filling dinner, that did not consist of burgers and fries, once we entered Colorado (we drove from Las Vegas). My husband and I both ordered the Hawaiian BBQ short ribs while our three toddlers shared BBQ Chicken. We quickly devoured our meals and also ordered a second helping of musubi (it comes with two pieces per order). Their Thai tea is also one of the best my husband and I ever had (not to be tea snobs but we're a frequent drinkers of Thai tea, hot, iced, or slushed.. We've had it all and more). I wish Tropix wasn't 4 hours away from our home.. We would definitely be frequent visitors if it were nearby us. Haha. Also, the sweet woman who takes your order is amazing. She does everything! She takes orders, cleans tables, serves the food, and oh man.. She's Wonder Woman! An absolute darling who goes above and beyond to make sure you enjoy your meals. I don't know if this is as good as it gets or not. But I do know that Hawaiian BBQ restaurants are few and far between (I live in the Washington DC metro area and I don't have any close to me). This is a very good one. We focused on the lunch plate specials -- two scoops of rice, one scope of macaroni salad, and the meat of choice. First, the rice. Excellent. Second, the macaroni salad, very tasty. A little on the plain side, but it was all gone very quickly. Now for the meats of choice. One meat was the chicken bbq. Well grilled, moist, well marinated, generous. And the dipping sauce only made it better. The other meat was the chicken katsu, flattened chicken breast breaded and pan fried. Excellent, crispy, moist, generous. Again, the dipping sauce, different than for the bbq, only made it better. Servings were so generous we had leftovers to take home. Soups were included. They were OK. We chose to stuff ourselves with the main course. You order at the counter, staring at a big menu enhanced by pictures. It was hard to focus in on something specific because everything looked great. There are so many other things of interest that I can hardly wait to return. The one side dish we ordered was musubi -- grilled spam presented sushi style. Again, generous, delicious. If you have a chance to go here, I strongly recommend you do. My husband has been telling me about this place for months. I am finally in Grand Junction and I chose this to be my first lunch here in town. I had the chicken curry. It was delicious and massive. So much tender flavorful grilled chicken which was then covered in a belly spicy curry. The curry was reminiscent to mgr of a Japanese style, with some carrots, onions, and potato chunks running through the sauce. This fish was really lovely and I'll have it again. My husband has the bbq beef sandwich. With the pickled carrots and fashion, cilantro and cucumber garnish it was like the Hawaiian answer to a bahn mi. Also a winner! This place's food seemed ok. At least their chicken tasted ok. The sour soup that came with the meals tasted good. However, the noodles in the noodle salad were overcooked. I hate when the amount of chicken in the picture, does not reflect what you get and also I hate when places use cabbage to make it look like you're getting a good amount of meat and you find out the only meat is on the surface. We also got a soup dish that apparently didn't taste good and my wife couldn't finish even a quarter of it. The lady at the front was very nice though. I ordered a spring roll appetizer and the chicken katsu curry lunch plate. It came with two scoops of white rice and a scoop of macaroni salad. I asked for brown sauce on the rice and the girl taking my order over the phone sounded confused and said they don't do that. Definitely a regular request for a Hawaiian plate lunch, not sure why it wasn't an option. The spring roll just had iceberg lettuce and was pretty bland. Pretty decent Hawaiian BBQ. We both got the BBQ mix for dinner. Pros: -BBQ beef (essentially bulgogi) was well flavored. It was a tad overcooked but still tasty. -Mac salad was flavorful as well, but smaller portions relative to the meat. -Reasonably priced- it was $13 for a full plate of food and could probably easily fill 2 people in general. -Good service and complimentary soup if you dine in. Cons: -BBQ chicken was mediocre. It's essentially chicken teriyaki (I would guess some sort of ginger, brown sugar, soy, garlic type of mix, standard shoyu chicken). It probably could have used a bit more char and felt a bit underdone. I think this chicken was also underseasoned. -I liked the cabbage and wish they gave me a bit more with this. Small nitpick. Overall, I liked Tropix Hawaiian BBQ. I wouldn't say it's anywhere close to the best Hawaiian food I've had, but everything seemed reasonably priced and decent value. I will say that I would be surprised if they are able to handle as many foods as they offer- not quite sure how good their Pho would be. That being said, the BBQ itself was all very solid. read more
